Anything in rumours of United trying to sign Sven Botman?

{Ed002's Note - They have spoken with his agent but another club are in discussions with Lille, but has no agreement.}

1.) 18 May 2022 12:19:36
Thanks Ed.

2.) 18 May 2022 13:33:16
Ed002 is the other club ac Milan?

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

3.) 18 May 2022 15:22:23
Wouldn't his lack of pace be an issue?

4.) 18 May 2022 18:12:15
Mad Hatter, that depends. Maldini was never quick, but was still the best defender of his generation.

Pace is always an advantage, but if you can read the game well and have the defence work well as a unit you can be a a top class defender without being quick.

That said Botman has excelled at Lille who tend to play with a fairly deep defensive line. While he wasn't really given much of a chance at Ajax under EtH who play with a high line.

So while we know he is an excellent defender in a deep sitting the, we have no idea how well he performs in a high line. For that reason I think he would be a risk.

All signings are a gamble, you never know if the player will take to the team, the style of play, the country or culture etc. Yet personally I think the best signings are when a club buy a player from a club that plays a similar style of football. It means you have seen exactly how that player can perform in that sort of set up.

Fair points Shappy.

Who would you like to see signed this summer?

He’s basically a left footed Maguire. Good when allowed to play deep and come onto the ball, but has the turning circle of an artic when balls are played in behind him. Avoid.

See talk that we tried to get Corentin Tolisso from Byaern on loan in January, but due to an injury crisis they would'nt let him go .

Any truth in this and are the club interested in follwing up with an offer in the summer?

{Ed002's Note - Corentin Tolisso (CM) An apt time to ask. Bayern Munich have made the player available for sale as they look to a shake up of the team and want to clear some out in the summer - and with Gretzka, Thiago and the up and coming Cuisance all playing in the same central midfield position, Tolisso is seen as surplus. Tolisso also had a serious injury issue last season but apparently all is well now - aside from niggling stuff. His representatives fielded several requests for loans from France and England in January but, like the agents of Thomas Muller and Jerome Boateng, he knew Bayern Munich would not be doing any business over the winter. There has been a discussion with one specific French side about the possibility of a summer move and the lady involved they may just be interested if a suitable price was proposed given the injury history. There has also been a discussion with Napoli as a potential Fabian Ruiz replacement - but they are still sorting themselves out from their problems and have no immediate interest. If the price suits it is expected Arsenal will be approached to see if previous interest remains given the situation with Dani Ceballos - but right now they are heading in a different direction as well. A return to Lyon will no doubt have been discussed with the player but even if they let Houssem Aouar leave this coming summer the addition of the vesatile Bruno Guimaraes will already have covered that.}

Thanks for that Ed.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

07 Aug 2019 19:22:59
Inaki Williams may just be the final straw for this particular transfer window.

1.) 07 Aug 2019 19:34:48
That bang anyone just heard was my head exploding, I hate transfer windows.

22 Aug 2016 14:10:58
Cameron Borthwick Jackson out on loan to Wolves for the season . Jose insists he still remains part of his plans in the long term but I doubt very much he'll be seen in a United shirt again.

1.) 22 Aug 2016 14:51:33
I think we will, he is a player who looks like he has all the tools to become a great player, he just needs to keep his head straight and concentrate on the football.

2.) 22 Aug 2016 16:12:59
I reckon it's more an admission that we're struggling to move Rojo out. With Shaw, Rojo, Darmain and Blind I'd imagine CBJ would struggle for games, and it's best for his development to get regular first team games at a competitive level. He'd be more ready next year when we've thinned the squad players a bit to give him more minutes.

3.) 22 Aug 2016 17:43:25
Yep we're struggling to offload rojo an Darmian because of wages.

4.) 23 Aug 2016 22:15:30
we have a call back clause in his loan.

5.) 29 Aug 2016 15:16:52
Darmian is not on very high wages.

Gotta hand it to the Glazers . on the day they're taking 11 million out in dividends, i really thought they'd at least have managed to announce the keeper from Watford as a distraction.

1.) 24 Jun 2022 14:49:16
Said it a few days ago, if this shambles carries on it's going to get very toxic before the season even starts. they've had 3 months to try and repair any gap between the supporters and the pathetic board. ten hag won't last til Christmas as his head will have exploded with the total Burke's running the club.

2.) 24 Jun 2022 14:55:56
Transfer business is not conducted by the Glazers and the £11m distribution will have absolutely no impact on who we do or do not buy this summer. Management will have been given a budget and it will be up to them to secure the players the coach needs to begin the rebuild. and to try to rid themselves of the overpaid dross still left on the books. Our impatience will also not be a factor in the speed of negotiations, and nor should it be. The time to judge the summer ins and outs is at the end of the window.

3.) 24 Jun 2022 15:27:35
The Glazer family won't be fazed by anything happening at the club. They'll use us as an ATM and when the time comes, they'll sell for billions. Trends on Twitter won't bother them, supporters protesting won't bother them because at the end of the day, the stadium will be full.

There will never be enough fans onside willing to hit them were it hurts so nothing will change until they decide it's time to go.

As for what's happening behind the scenes. It seems the massive upheaval in staff has had an effect. Still early days yet and transfers can happen very quickly but with the squad due back next week, it would have been nice for Ten Hag to have one or two new recruits to count on.

4.) 24 Jun 2022 16:15:12
The Glazers will keep doing what they are doing and milking ‘brand’ United for all its worth. The global exposure is still there to create bucket loads of cash year on year. Dare I say it, but even negative publicity is a means to an end for them.

If the loyal fan base are serious about doing anything at all about it, there needs to be some serious soul searching and galvanising of the home faithful. Problem is, don’t think your ever going to get that. I hate to say it, but the amount of foreign football tourists you see at United is phenomenal and there’s always going to be bums on seats. The demo’s that were organised last year were also pretty low on numbers given the grand scheme of things. The only thing that will seriously put the cat amongst the pigeons (bar anything extreme) is people wrapping their season tickets in en masse. We need Mr Ratcliffe to make the leeches an offer they can’t refuse!

5.) 24 Jun 2022 16:42:24
Shaw thing just a point, it’s far more beneficial to get players in early so ETH has time to work with them, so in one way your right judge at the close but let’s be honest this summer we needed to be proactive and to get things done early . Yet again it’s becoming boring and slow. Dragging every bit of excitement out of the window!
Yet most importantly it’s hampering our new manager.

6.) 24 Jun 2022 17:08:10
Chris. Sign all the players on deadline day and you've saved millions in wages.

With that type of thinking i could be the DOF we need.

7.) 24 Jun 2022 17:20:15
I think the Glazers are going to be pretty worried. The share price has effectively halved, their CEO has been shown to openly say the club burnt through cash and he also openly said the club needs major investment to improve the stadium and training facilities. This is probably the single most important season of the Glazers tenure as owner.

If we have a poor season this season, how do we attract players, commercial sponsorship and coaches/ managers next season. The wage bill and the debt are all very serviceable now BUT if it doesn’t go well this season and we buy badly, don’t get into the champions league again the exec team are going to have to seriously look at costs. Not to mention interest rates, most leveraged debt isn’t fixed it is basis points over BoE rate.

I think EtH will be a success BUT they have to buy the player he wants to play the system he wants. Must be a lot of pressure on his shoulders.

8.) 24 Jun 2022 18:40:24
Chris, agreed. The sooner the better. But the team doesn't even start training until Monday. I can't see any major negative impact from not signing anyone until next week.

9.) 24 Jun 2022 19:44:31
I'm sorry Shawthing but the United fan base has been more patience, the haggling is pathetic. If you want the player, then buy the friggin player. and I'm sorry the glazers do have input because they own the friggin club. They control everything and leach every penny out of it. can see ten hag lasting til Christmas then walking.

10.) 24 Jun 2022 22:59:39
Christ Ten Hag hasn't even taken a training session yet one week into the window and people are predicting when he will walk!

05 Apr 2022 10:58:07
had to laugh at Rooney the other night talking about the good young players we have that we should be building around and he includes Lingard who's 30 this year, how Lingard has been getting away with that one for as long as he has amazes me .

1.) 05 Apr 2022 11:10:02
He said all the right things, including the dreaded fact that Poch is more suitable is he has been in the Prem before. Not being wise to the Prem didn't hurt Klopp or Pep did it, and being in it for 50 years hasn't done much for Dyche either.

2.) 05 Apr 2022 11:18:10
If you act like a child then apparently people will believe you are still a child.

3.) 05 Apr 2022 12:02:10
Love it Shappy.

4.) 05 Apr 2022 12:18:39
I hate these lazy mainstream views on football that you hear coming from people who really should know better.

Rather than give some real insight and radical ideas, so many pundits and people within the game just tow the party line, afraid to upset anyone. If that's what Rooney said about Lingard then he just makes himself look like an idiot and if I was a club owner it would really put me off thinking about employing him as a manager if he is that out of touch.

That's why people like listening to Roy Keane, because he will say unpopular stuff like Pogba is crap when the whole corporate football/ sports agenda tries to pretend he isn't.

5.) 05 Apr 2022 14:04:45
MancMan - Why does it make him look like an idiot?
That's Rooney's view and he's entitled to it.
Can you honestly say that Lingard has been given a fair crack this season or last season.
Put it this way it can't be much better than the absolute sh*t that we have been watching for the last 18 months.

6.) 05 Apr 2022 14:19:44
Nailed it there Shappy.

7.) 05 Apr 2022 17:07:31
To be fair I thought Lingard made decent contributions when he was used earlier in the season. But if a player has made up his mind to leave, and maybe (speculating) is taking it easy in training and not saying or doing the right things, it can't be a surprise that the manager opts for other players ie Elanga probably.

8.) 05 Apr 2022 20:44:26
He didn’t say we should be building a team around Lingard or any one else he said in his opinion Lingard should be starting for us now
Can’t disagree ability wise but if he wants to leave I sort of begrudge him getting game time!

9.) 06 Apr 2022 02:25:08
Lingard has been an utter waste of space everytime he has stepped on the field. Absolute embarrassment. If he was going to go on strike he could have had the decency to stand by a burning barrel outside the ground, rather than stinking up the pitch instead.

10.) 06 Apr 2022 02:58:36
I disagree on the lingard part.
We don't play counter attack football and lingard's suited to play if there's amples of space ahead of him, Rashford is in a similar boat.
The moment you want to play in a fashion where you want to pin the opposition both of these players become useless.

I would personally sell Rashford over a lot of other players. The worst thing we could do is award him a contract and see these performances.
Maguire, Rashford, Shaw, Lingard and Pogba all 3 of these of the lot need to be shown the door. I'm happy to keep AWB for one more season as backup as he's not crying in public.

I really hope there's a culture change and we remove the power in the hands of these players.
I haven't seen anything Shaw has done better than Telles this season,
I'm confident Martial would've performed at a similar level as Rashford as unlike Martial he can control the ball.

Maguire is our worst CB, I'd have him behind Bailly, Varane, Jones and Lindelof.
Lingard can go and become an instagrammer. Pogba can go to farmers league to only turn up in 20% of the games.

29 Dec 2021 10:24:06

Every time Ralf is interviewed he's talking about physicality, winning personal duels, winning the second balls etc.

I'm starting to feel like i'm listening to Sean Dyche with a German accent.

On a serious note i'm hoping that he's given some of these players a chance to do what he wants and having seen that some of them can't / won't, he'll make some big calls regarding the team for the Burnley game.

1.) 29 Dec 2021 19:30:48
Bilko you're so off the mark. He's talking about pressing high and winning the one v one high up the park. This is what all the best teams do, watch City, Liverpool, Chelsea and you'll see what he's talking about. He's not saying go and break people's legs, he's talking about ball recovery high up the pitch.
Sadly, it's an alien process to most of our players and most fans haven't seen it in years.

2.) 30 Dec 2021 10:09:55
Park Ji Sung was excellent at closing down opposition players. How I miss the old days, Rio, vidic, Scholes, etc.

3.) 30 Dec 2021 12:17:26
AAA…. He might have got that from a bunch of kids in the German leagues at little clubs but it’s different kind of thing to retrain the brain of seasoned professionals and when it’s only for 6 months anyway they think what’s the point!

26 Oct 2021 14:36:46
Fergie and Martin Edwards at the training ground today, talk about a club stuck in a time warp.

We're surely only days away from fergie coming back as manager, with Ronaldo up top and Scholes being brought out of retirement for a second time to play midfield.

1.) 26 Oct 2021 14:49:23
Toe-totally nailed it, I think bringing Scholes back would suck.

2.) 26 Oct 2021 14:56:29
haha good one GDS.

17 Sep 2021 12:09:36
Seems to me every time i listen to OGS that he's basically trying to recreate the Fergie era .

Couple of problems with that

1. Football has moved on
2. He's not Alex Ferguson

Even the signing of Ronaldo seems like some nostalgic attempt to bring back the past, except we did'nt sign 24 year old Ronaldo, we signed soon to be 37 year old Ronaldo.

1.) 17 Sep 2021 12:34:28
2 games 3 goals
Not a bad start.

Ronney and Cavani rotating upfront is electric. Greenwood learning from two of the very best. Not sure what you would see here that is worth doom mongering about.

2.) 17 Sep 2021 13:04:11

The manager looking backwards and not forwards. You learn from the past but use that learning to set the future. It seems Ole just wants to recreate the past. The problem is, that past was built on the genius of SAF, a truly great leader not just a manager. Ole is a championship standard manager with ideas of that level but is not a leader. We have to pack coaches around him because he doesn’t have the expertise on his own. We have to pack the best players yet he still produces Tuesday night. It’s not “doom mongering” to flag the reality that Bilko did, it’s what it is.

3.) 17 Sep 2021 13:51:29
Agree mostly redman but would add its still early in the season and we have a couple of important players to come back.
In saying that, I honestly feel this is the final season for OGS unless we win major silverware:ECL, EPL not the carabao or whatever. He has had the resources, players etc with the probable exception ofa DM with quality and still cannot show tactical awareness and the times to change the team- he kept Fred on after 1/ 2 time on a yellow last season and the same again within other games. Granted he hasn't got great coaching staff in Phelan, (Tosser) and carrick (raw as eggs) and the other guy who was coaching bairns not long back, but he is the manager. Worry is, who do we get to replace him?

4.) 17 Sep 2021 14:06:18
Conte is available, experienced and a winner.

5.) 17 Sep 2021 14:20:32
Pep wants a full stadium each week, he chose the wrong club for that. Come on Pep its a shorter commute for you to Old Trafford than the Eithad.

{Ed014's Note - I think he likes to watch football though, that’s where the problem is ?‍♂️

6.) 17 Sep 2021 14:47:41
He's got the likes of Phelan and Carrick alongside him because that's part of what i mean by trying to go back to the Fergie days.

7.) 17 Sep 2021 15:22:37
On the Pep and City Fans argument, why don't city just buy fans? Like rent the galatasaray/ fenerbache/ dortmund fans for the champions league or the milwall fans for the premier league.

Or they could spend on hologram fans that don't need to be replaced, would be a better investment than a back up left back for £50m.

8.) 17 Sep 2021 16:33:49
I think people tend to forget how much football has moved on. With all of the video and technology available these days, good managers can prepare in the minutest detail, those that are up for it.

We do have a lot to be excited about with all of our attacking talent. But we remain a top-heavy and imbalanced side.

9.) 17 Sep 2021 17:55:05
People forget that fergie also didn't come in and win stuff straight away, it took him time to build a team. I like ole and think his work will beqr fruits. Changing manager again will be detrimental to the work that has been put in since he came in.

10.) 17 Sep 2021 19:58:49
If I hear Ole say 'that's football' in another answer I'm going to throw my TV out the window.
Then cry and buy another one.

11.) 17 Sep 2021 21:10:34

SAF didn’t come in and win stuff straight away but the club was in a far worse mess when SAF took over, than when Ole arrived. SAF had the Aberdeen experience, Ole Cardiff, the difference utterly massive.

12.) 17 Sep 2021 18:14:44
Ed, if Pep wants to watch football he has got a TV for that.

{Ed014's Note - a double bonus! Gets to pick games with teams who play football and avoids having to go near that run down old stadium too.

I doubt there are any background issues with him, he seems like a good lad and I think he’ll go places and would be better than Lindelof or Maguire, but possibly he’d be better off playing regular prem football with a Leicester or Wolves for a couple of seasons.

There are other players who've come in from the Portuguese league and done well pretty much right from the off, e. g. Ruben Dias and Luis Diaz so i don't imagine the Portuguese league is the problem, possibly if he'd come into a more well coached and organised team that played to his strengths he'd have done better.

You think that's the sort of thing that happens with the CEO at a well run club. No problem with meeting with fans but there's a time and a place and a way to do it.

If he was worried about them coming to his house he should have called the police, muppets have no business harassing people at their home, there are plenty of alternative options if they want to protest .
