Big Pete was the best signing.

Top 5 made up by Cantona, Ronny, Keane and McClair IMO. Loads of very close ones like OGS, Irwin, VDS, Rio etc.

Now for a debate instead of worst signings what 3 players did in your opinion he sign with high hopes of but never met them?

Mine are Veron, Cruyff and Poborsky.

Veron for sure, Macheda has been one of my biggest disappointments as he was absolutely prolific when he arrived and described as one of the best SAF had seen 1 on 1 with the keeper.

Bebe, Djemba-Djemba and Massimo Taibi. Not everyone will agree I know haha. If it was a top 5 I'd shove in Bellion and Veron, simply for what we paid for him.

It's got to be kleberson, veron was disappointing, but I still think he added something to the team. If I remember correctly, kleberson was brought in under high hopes and a rather large transfer fee, but was a flop on every single level. Couldn't pass couldn't shoot, couldn't defend, had no pace. Awful signing. Would rather have had a team of djemba djembas than klebersons lol!

I suggest Jono and Supasub watch the Spurs game where we are 3 down and go on and score 5 in the second half . Veron was a league winner that year. If you remember he was a panic buy by Fergie after Vierra originally agreed to join and then changed his mind at the last minute. Veron's touch and passing was sublime it was just the pace of the English game he struggled with

I agree kloot, he was good that season but as an overall player, for what we paid for him I think he was similar to Anderson, except had a bit more to him. Brilliant when he wanted to be but majority of the time he was just filling a space. But no one will take away the title from taibi I don't think. Shocker of a keeper!

I remember the game well and whilst I agree Veron generally got a hard time that he perhaps didn't deserve, he never dominated like we hoped he would. Another example of SAF buying someone and not being sure what to do with him

KLOOT is spot on, Veron genuinely improved us in Europe, he just needed a bit more time on the ball than he was allowed in the league.

KLOOT I know the game well thanks, read the question at the top again fully. Veron also had some good games in CL for us but he didn't deliver for 28 million imo. He was a top player at sampdoria and I never expected us to sign him. But he was not value for money for the time he was with us. I'm surprised it never worked better with Scholes, Veron and Keane as a central midfield.

Brian McLair, good shout. What a true pro and I am so glad he was a key part of the team that finally won the league. I loved the moment when Winterburn tried to shoulder barge him and ended up in a heap. Brian picked him up by his shirt and snarled at him before dumping him back onto the floor.

Between ourselves and sampdoria veron played for parma and then lazio where he was awesome and instrumental to the romans winning the scudetto, RVN was devastated when we sold veron as was i.

Veron would have worked had Fergie played a 4231 but was never suited to our style of 442 and Keano by his own admission was not greatest teammate with him and he never settled in.

Did we ever play Scholes, Veron and Keane in the same line up?

Yes we played all 3 sometimes in the CL as we were vulnerable as a 442 to counter attacks. SAF in Europe then opted for 3 centrally to neutralise counter attacks and continued ever since. We then always continued with and odd number in central midfield particularly 1 person sitting very centrally which has transfered into the premiership, that man being carrick.

I think you have maybe misread the meaning of the post. I personally thought Veron was amazing in Italy and when we signed him I was over the moon but the expectation of what he could do was never lived up to and so unlike the Kleberson's, Djemba x2 etc who came with far less expectaion Veron didn't live up to his billing on a bigger scale.

I fully agree his adaptability to the pace in England was a big issue but had he been played in the hole IMO he would have flourished with that bit of space. I remember well the game you are talking about and he also had a very good debut in the pre season ga, e v Celtic scoring a free kick but in general a mixture of his adaptability and position made his tenure at us an underwhelming time in comparrisson to what we all no doubt all expected from him.
