Now there is a real opportunity to build a better future. For too long United have been run on sentimental decisions, emotional speeches, hype, comments based on sentiment, we don't want his type, support your new manager, we are United we don't sack managers, we do things differently. It is time to put sentiment to one side and make good logical football decisions that cement the building blocks for the clubs long term future.
Sentiment puts Giggs in charge immediately when he has no experience. Being logical we need to build a club structure that gives us the ability to appoint a coach like Giggs rather than the all powerful manager and then find very few can cope at that level. It is too soon to put a coach in charge, yet. Sentiment means people want the stability of twenty years when that was actually exceptional. So we need to define the clubs style and build a support structure not just for one coach from within but a structure that gives the opportunity for more to grow at the club. That isn't going to come from appointing Giggs and hoping it works. This will come from appointing a top manager who will put a structure in place and define the football we will play, we know our identity our style but instead of relying on finding a manager who will retain it let's ensure it is enshrined in the ethos of everything we do. I am not suggesting Van Gaal, but I read how he wrote out what Cruyff had suggested for Barca, enshrining it almost.
The club now needs to establish the candidates and their ability to deliver the restructure of the club, find out what their vision is and will they embrace developing their coaches, establishing a succession plan. That for me is when we decide which candidate to choose, we shouldn't look for someone to just be here for twenty years, we need a shaper and a developer as well as someone with vision. He also needs to stabilise where we are, inspire players but demand respect. He needs to understand what it takes to win, that goes without saying but select him based on the delivery of the change needed to the club whilst delivering a winning team. There are some good candidates and so there should be, this offers a fantastic opportunity for someone not just to manage, to win but to be the architect of the new United. SAF managed the club brilliantly but we were not ready to change, now perhaps we are and it needs to give us the ability to be more seamless in change. The new manager shouldn't be selected for longevity but for a visionary and inspirational leader. There are two or three candidates and I am excited at the prospects now.

When you say we have been run on sentiment for 'too long' do you mean >10 months? The 20 years previous we were winning things so sentiment didn't need to come into it.

Sir Matt and Sir Alex were both given time to create a winning team. that's not sentiment either, its allow someone the time to make the changes required.

BR had an unspectacular first year with Liverpool and perhaps LFC are about to be rewarded for their patience.

The problems Moyes' had went deeper than just the results on the pitch. If half of what I have read was going on behind the scenes, United, as a club, seems in a bit of a mess. Of course, it can all be rectified very quickly. That said: some of the players' who showed so much blatant disrespect, should be outed in the summer. I suspect most will.

Popestar

Sentiment has run through us for years. Simple example, It is Old Trafford not the Theatre of Dreams

The time argument, Sir Alex was given time to create a winning team because he had earned it from his CV. If LFC are about to be rewarded for anything it was being decisive about Hodgson

Move on, look forward and we now have the chance to progress the club on a football basis

I agree the way forward should be for the club to have a structure similar to how it works in holland where the future manager works his way through the clubs coaching system. Gaining plenty of coaching experience, this also gives them chance to work with the youngsters at the club so they kno weather they should be able to make the step up. Continuity doesn't have to mean 10, 15, 20 years of the same manager. This approach gives continuity.

I agree about the structure being changed so that so much on the club doesn't fall on the manager, but this is a big change that doesn't happen overnight.

Red Man, there is sentiment at every club, of course. Your original post said that we had been 'run' on sentiment for too long, which is not the case.

LFC might well have been 'decisive' with BR if they hadn't paid off Benitez and gone through Dalgleish and Hodgson in relatively quick succession.

Move on, but don't be blind to the unsavory aspects of this season that extend beyond the results. We might well be having similar conversations with frequency from now on, depending on results.

With this team we will have a worse season next year. It will come down to how much we spend and who comes in and maybe even more importantly which players are sent packing.
