After watching the game again we gave away two clear chances which they should have scored aside from De geas saves. For me me we need a strong intelligent CB as a priority and l don't think we can accommodate Mata, Rooney and Herrera in the same team at present. We had Rooney marking Terry.

We've needed at least one top class CB for a long time. Smalling has improved, but has been made look much better than he is by our defensive set up. Jones is a liability, Rojo is back up at best, and Blind simply isn't a CB. We should have signed one in the summer, and it will be more difficult in January.

As for Rooney, Mata and Herrera. I honestly only think that Herrera should have a long term future at the club. Rooney is in steady decline, and Mata simply hasn't worked out. There's still a major rebuilding job, and top of the list is central defence and making sure we have much more pace up front.

Agree we need a CB unlikely to get of quality in Jan. For me the manager needs to get the best out of the current squad first isn't that what makes a great manager? LVG has fail to do this in the first part of the season we can only hope we start to see real Man Utd in the second part!

Laporte would be my pick. I don't think we have interest though according to the ed on who we have recently looked at. I agree we need to inject some pace into the attack. Would like to see schniderlin and Herrera start for a run of games I think we should build around the two of them.

Ed04, my brother-in-law is an Everton fan, and he thinks Martinez is ruining Stones as a defender.

Says he has very little defensive coaching, instead concentrating on bringing the ball out, distribution, ball control etc. Thinks he needs a more all-round coach, who'll appreciate the need to concentrate on specific defensive tasks, or he'll end up wasting his defensive abilities, through no fault of his own.

{Ed004's Note - To the above poster. The midfield has to be built around Herrera and Schneiderlin imo however I'd alter our midfield slightly from last night. Could we play Herrera and Schneiderlin as box to box midfielders with Schweinsteiger dictating play (like carrick done last season). Means schneiderlin (not the best passer) can drive forward more and win tackles higher up along with Herrera doing the same. Sign a pacy winger (Felipe Anderson being linked, could be a gamble or Mane for right wing position) and play Martial until Memphis matures and pray rooney gets his act together. I agree with you Noucamp and Ed001 would probably say the same thing. Martinez hasn't a clue how to set up his defenders so at the end of the season Stones will have to move and would probably be much improved with a summer working on his defensive positioning.}

Stones is a superb cb. And if we offer the right money for him and lukaku, then Everton will sell.

The problem SchMidfield is the right monkey to get both would be around £90-100m.

I would like to see the club look at the likes of Lucas moura, calhanoglu, Laporte, lukaku, Bernardo silva, moussa dembele, sofiane feghouli, Jose Louis Gaya, shkodran mustafi, William carvalho and Andre Gomes.

I know we signed schweini and schniederlin last summer, but schweini and carrick are not getting any younger.

I might even try and sweeten the deal for moura by sending depay on loan for the res
T of the season as he is not offering much to the team at the moment.

Yeah, Ed. The brother-in-law is a die-hard Toffee, but he's also a football fan, and as Martinez doesn't look like he's going anywhere soon, he's reluctantly accepted that Stones will have to go to fulfil his potential. Just not to us :)
