He should have scored 3-4 times but then again he was the only player who looked like scoring in an awful team, where the hell was Sturridge all night? No doubt he'll get off scot free though as the media love to talk about Wayne.

He definitely should have had two, Ozwald. The one he scored and the ome he hit straight at the goalie with his left foot. The headed one he did all he could imo. Not sure what the fourth one would be? The free-kick perhaps? Thought it was a very good effort. He was England's best player for me, probably the best player on the pitch.

Sturridge was terrible, as was Welbeck, although he worked hard as ever. Henderson is so average, not an international level player.

Yeah rooney had a decent game but I wouldn't go over the top about it. if suarez played for the england and rooney played for uraguay then the result is spun on its head tonight.

Rooney was easily England's best player - no contest amazing what happens when you play him where he can be most effective.

The Rooney hate in the media, from the English fans and on here is a joke.

Sturridge, Sterling, Lallana and Barkley showed they have a hell of a lot to learn at this level.

Baines and Jag are Everton defenders - no more to be said (never wanted Baines at United, yet the clamor on here a few months back was plain nuts).

Gerrard's too old and Henderson enthusiastically ordinary.

England gave up 3 poorly defended goals to 2 forwards who know how to score playing against those defenders - Cahill is by far the best available - and that's why they are going out.

In answer to some earlier nonsense about our best players based on ability - ability is what a player is ABLE to make happen on the field against the best completion.

We have Rooney, RVP and DeGea and should count ourselves lucky we have those 3.

LVG is not going to sell Rooney so get over it - he will build his team around those 3 players and we will contend next year.

Everyone else is replaceable.

Big al serious if that was a decent game for sturridge is hate to see him play badly! The defence wasnt always awful at time cahill was a machine! Rooney played very well. To pick out gerrard welbeck and johnson but not mention sterling is redic he did litterally nothing!

Baines has showed he is not really a very good defender .
Good at crossing and free kicks but average as a defender.
England have done ok but have conceded 4 goals from poor defending .
Terry and cole anyone?

Sturridge got caught in the same problem Rooney does.the ball never got to him so he went looking for it even out to the wing midfield area. That meant no one up front as the others were not bursting ahead of him.
He had a poor game as did most of them.
Rooney was the one positive but even then no world beater. his shot would have been buried by a clinical striker and his first touch is so poor for a number 10.
Can't wait to see what moves van gaal makes with the squad

Jred, I have been thinking this for a few weeks now. Baines for me has dipped this season compared to last season and the season before. I think it's lucky the club didn't pay what Everton wanted. I think he may be starting to slow down. Shaw is a must IMO.

In regards to Terry and Cole, no doubt Cole would have been better. Terry is certainly better than Jagielka, but he is also a vile human being so I am glad he's not in the side.

OT7, I think the media will slam Rooney when we go out and Gerrard who's been average to say the least will not even get a mention. Okay Rooney should have scored both tap ins, but it's no good scoring up one end if the defence cannot stop them going in at the other end. Against a better side we would get savaged. I think Costa Rica may get a draw against us.

Rooney scored from where he should be played, as a striker attacking the penalty and 6 yard box. He is no number 10, playing behind the striker as he was again poor in that role last night, although still one of the very few who tried a bit. If Hodgson had Rooney through the middle last night with Barkley behind him and Lallana left and Sterling right, we would have created more and had more of a chance in my eyes. I honestly don't get the big thing with Sturridge. Yes he scored a few this season playing with a hugely talented racist vampire, but he really is nothing special. Welbeck tried again but just isn't good enough for me, lots of running but his control and control when running with the ball is very poor.

Let's hope Holland play really well in the next round but lose in a very close game. Then all of our main players and manager will be done and can rest and concentrate on the more important issues of next season.

Scotbos - I think you can include Mata and Januzaj as players he will build the team around. Apart from those 5 though, everyone is replaceable as you said.

Sturridge is a greedy chap, and as for Baines he's had a right stinker, we should have taken Cole, I for one wanted Baines thank god we didn't buy him

Ive never been a massive fan of baines, good at crossing and free kicks and I think that's why people rave about him but he's not a great defender .
Glad we never bought him to be honest

Its easy to say if x player had played 10 he would of played better but we don't know that .
Welbeck strurridge and sterling weren't great last night i'm not sure barkely would of improved that.
although i'm sure beast will argue they played poor because of rooney.
Its like the last couple of years when everyone shouted kags would of played well if he was playing 10 . Then he plays 10 and is poor, I always think on this site players play better when there not playing.
For what's its worth I would of played rooney 9 with barkley 10 as well.
No doubt rooney will get stick but in 2 games we have managed 2 goals he has made one scored 1 .
He maybe isn't exciting enough it? seems the press would rather a player beat 2 people then give the ball away, you can do that all day and play well it seems
