Good morning Football Rumours community. I was having a chat with my Brother about Rooney with the discussion point being is now the right time to sell Rooney?

I would like to hear your thoughts.

Not unless we are buying Muller and Kane to replace Rooney and RVP.

No that time has passed. A couple of seasons ago may have been the ideal moment but only if the team was invested in in a similar way to it was last season.

I think having Rooney puts us in a awkward position, in that Wayne doesn't have a clear best position. But he is paid as the clubs best player and the one you should be building around, but how do you build around a player who has no definitive position.

For me Rooney's best position is as a second striker. He needs someone playing as a striker in front of him making space for him to work in. But he needs to be closer to the goal than a traditional No.10 and less involved as his short passing and first touch let him down when he plays deeper.

So in order to have Rooney play at his best he needs a world class striker playing in front of him to make space for him, he needs two box to box midfielders behind him doing all the midfield work, and with no creative midfielder playing centrally he needs two great wide players who can create even when doubled up against. He would be amazing if we played in our traditional 4411 with him playing as the one between the midfield and the striker. A midfield with the likes of Keane and Scholes bossing it so he doesn't have to drop deep and help them out, a striker a head of him of the class and ability of RvN and wide players like Giggs and Ronaldo. He needs players of that quality and those kind of players to play at his best.

Maybe Schneiderlin and Herrera could do a job in midfield, Maybe Di Maria and Depay could be those wide players but we need that striker as well. But are they as good as Keane, Scholes, Giggs, Ronaldo and RvN? No. Also playing that way in very one dimensional, and easy enough to cancel out. Press high and double up on the wide areas.

Rooneys best assest is his ability to play nearly any position and still give a solid 7 out of 10 performance. He is a world class squad player, not the corner stone of a great team.

Last season I would have said yes, but thankfully we didn't because of the lack of goals in the striker department.

However I believe we need to keep hold of Wazza for another season or two whilst we transition into a new team. He is a reliable goal scorer and is probably one of our best players. If we can bring in a player with potential to be better than Rooney (Kane) then it can be an easy transition to switch them over.

However I do believe Rooney will retire at United and will go down as a club legend, despite is poor form the past season or two.

I have wanted him sold for 4 year's, but now isn't the time with us unloading so many in his position. If we sign a world class striker, then I would sell Rooney and bring in another squad player striker or a rotational striker. Rooney has to be the main striker for the good of the team, as the manager has said he will always play and in midfield it is like having 9 men.

yeah let's sell RVP, Rooney and get rid of Falcoa all in one window ! that would be far too much change in one position

Sell the money grabbing little toad. Over rated and over hyped by the british press he was a wonder when he was a kid but where as Messi and Ronnie moved on he lost all that made him special his power and pace. Fergie recognised this and was getting rid of him. Moyes bottled it and it cost him his job.
