Saw an interesting post on the socials. United's starting 11 in the last game before ETH took over.

De Gea
Dalot, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw
Fred, McTominay
Hannibal, Fernandez, Elanga,
Cavani

A bit of perspective for those who get frustrated with the pace of a rebuild. Only two of those players make our current best 11, 4 of them are no longer here, and 3 we are looking to move on.

That's a lot of progress in 1 year.

Are you saying that an injury-free and on form Dalot doesn't make the first 11?

Last season was a blot for him, but the season before he was among the contenders for POTY - Wan-Bissaka, despite the improved form, is still nowhere near good enough.

All the Dalot-bashing and Wan-Bissaka loving is utterly perplexing, Dalot IMO is a far better defender and an unquestionably better attacker.

I don't normally respond to these but I have to disagree with Ork completely.

Dalot is better attacking, than WanBisaka but defensively is terrible. Whilst WanBisaka is the opposite.

I think that's half the problem with the right side of defence. We need someone that is capable of both attacking and defending.

According to the manager, AWB was first choice when the season finished. Neither are good enough long-term imo, but that’s not the point of the post.

Whether or not it's Dalot or AWB, it doesn't change the truth of the observation. Back then AWB wouldn't have even been in the reckoning, so bad was he.

Dalot is average he wouldn’t get in any top 8 teams. Awb has improved lots prob the best one on one defender in world football and for me should be ahead of dalot. Dalot isn’t good at defending nor is he good at getting forward, his end product is terrible.

Dalot is a good player, but not a great one. He still has potential to improve though.

However, I must say AWB is making me eat my words. I thought he was finished at the club. His technique was poor, he lacked confidence and looked like getting a nose bleed every time he crossed the halfway line. While his slide tackles are great, the fact he has to make so many highlights his poor positioning.

Yet in the past 6 months the guy had gone from strength to strength, better positioning, more confident on the ball, against Real Madrid the other night he was pinging off one and teo touch passes, he got forward and has even found himself in a shooting position a few times.

The work that he, EtH and his coaches have done is simply fantastic.

AWB isn't the best one on one defender in the world nor even close, he is the best at recovery tackles in the world, recovery being the important part because he doesn't read the game and position himself very well.

If you want to see a great one on one defender and how he plays watch Ashley Cole against Ronnie, he gave a number of masterclasses against him, didn't give him a sniff.

For fullbacks.

For fullbacks the words of Paolo Maldini are worth reminding everyone of:

If i have to make a tackle, then i have already made a mistake.
