I think Carvalho is a great prospect. He looks like he could become a force in his defensive midfield position for years to come. He would help us immensely in adding some strength to the midfield.

Both would be fantastic. If we're reportedly willing to spend £20m of blind I'd much rather cough up another £4m and get Carvalho, use him instead of the 3rd CB.

With carvalho, i'd be really worried if we continued to play 2 in the midfield.I don't think he's dynamic enough for that.But carvalho right now and someone like strootman in jan for a proper 4-3-3 would look nice, at least on paper. But then, what about our endless supply of no.10s?

With Carvalho I'd feel comfortable playing 4-3-3 with him, Herrera and Mata in midfield with Rooney and Di Maria wide and RVP up top. Back 4 of Raphael, Jones, Rojo and Shaw. I don't think Vidal would offer enough protection to play that formation.

I don't see Strootman moving in January, he would have only been back for 3 months, I think with such a serious injury, van Gaal would want to assess him over a longer period.
Plus would Strootman want to move in January, Roma could be still involved in European competition or fighting for the title.
If a move is going to happen I would expect it to be more like next summer.

Jred, I agree, but what do we do about the RB situation? I think you agree with me that Rafael is unreliable and far too injury prone to be relied upon. Certainly some good talking points, not just on this site either. Everyone is wondering what will happen.

Obviously Vidal is currently a better player. Vidal would be better in a 2 man central midfield partnership as he is more dynamic than Carvalho, but saying that they could both do the same thing in a 3 man midfield. Carvalho is more attuned to the defensive side of the game while Vidal is good at both, the defensive and offensive side of the game.

Vidal would bring more excitement but could leave us open for counter attacks if he does go forward especially with the weak CB we currently possess.

Id love if we got both. If I had to pick one i'd go for Carvalho. He seems to be more of what we need.

The issue I have with Vidal is that I can see him becoming another Owen Hargreaves - an excellent midfielder when fit, but spending too much time on the treatment table and retiring before his contract is up. I know that Vidal and Carvalho do not play is exactly the same position on the field, but I would prefer us to take a punt on the younger player becoming world class rather than Vidal's knee making a 100% recovery, enabling him to fulfil a 5 year contract.

There is no guarantee over injury for anybody Mike all we can do is put him through a vigorous medical and if he passes then there is not much more you can do really

LvG will know what he wants to do, it's us that's guessing. LvG likes options and will change formation during games if he has the players to be able to do that. For example, he may see Di Maria as a LM, but when we need a goal I can see him being played as a striker.

I don't think the change you are expecting is going to happen Jred. I cannot see MU selling Van Persie to Juventus in the next five days and us moving to a 433 with Rooney as the main striker. I think you are clutching at straws there my friend.

As I have said several times I would be amazed if rvp left this summer ( I think he might off if moyes had stayed).

Next season and over the course of this season I see us moving to a 4-3-3 .
Next summer rvp will have 1 year left on his contract and be 32 so I wouldn't be surprised if he moves on then.

I love the way that not only think you know what every player and manager thinks you now think you know what I was thinking.


Just to be clear the change I was talking about is that I think we will start to move away from 3-5-2
