Quote from site recently
"Raya for me could have a similar impact for us as Ramsdale at Arsenal.
May not have the massive upside but offers a step up on DDG in the key metrics EtH likes whilst being PL proven. "

At the weekend Ramsdale's play out from back gifted a goal in much worse fashion than the McGuire pass. Yesterday against City I felt that he could have done better with first 3 city goals.

I'm not trying to go in on Ramsdale, I think he has been pretty good this year. But my point is that good keepers do make errors and can cost goals - especially when playing out from the back.

I think DDG criticism is exaggerated, and given the cash constraints and other areas in the team that need fixing, GK might not be the area we need to fix this summer.

Looking forward to seeing what EtH does here. Many fans are saying he needs to go, but I'm not so sure EtH will give it the same priority as other areas.

{Ed001's Note - you should go in on Ramsdale, he is terrible and no idea what impact the original poster thought he made. The difference for Arsenal was Saliba, that is why they were competitive this season.}

Ddg is a great shot stopper and that's it. He isn't a complete goalkeeper by any stretch of the imagination. Ddg stop shots but most of them he could avoid himself of he just stepped out of his box to mop up the danger in the first place. He just sits back. He is a complete contrast to the greats we have had like Schmeichel and Van der sar.

My problem with DDG is crosses. And from corners his inability to come out of the 6 yard box or catch/ punch anything inside the 6 yard box. A GK coming out and claiming crosses and starting attacks quickly by throwing out or catching crosses from corners to take pressure off the team or again start quick attacks is worth so much.

Imagine if Arteta had sold Saliba. City would be the lone rangers at the top. Saliba is as important to Arsenal as Martinez is to Utd.

Perhaps we need a goalkeeping coach .

No GK coach will improve de Gea's weaknesses. He doesn't have it, and he never did. He was always weak in the air and reluctant to sweep. He's been with us for 13 years. He's fully aware of the way the role of GK has changed during that time, and he's failed to keep up. There's only one reason for that. He doesn't have the ability.

My commiserations to Ed001. He's stating the obvious. The loss of Saliba seems to have been the key to Arsenal's decline and now inevitable loss of the title. Holding is no better than Maguire. I recall his comments during the window last summer when Utd were in for Lisandro. He extolled Saliba then and has been proved right.

The only mistake he made was when he tried kicking the ball but it got stuck under him.

Its not his fault tht oompla loompa maguire can't even THINK STRAIGHT OR PASS THE BALL around and he was supposeed to b good with his feet.

De Gea has been told by cpach to pass it to them and this is new to him so he will mame mistakes.

I would still habe him above anyone as he makes save that many keepers would not get anywhere near.

Lollll.

Singh that's the point. He wouldn't need to make half those saves if he had the balls to jump and catch or come out and sweep.

Singh, if you want to blame Maguire for Sevilla's second goal I don't think you'll have too many people disagree with you. Although to completely absolve DDG of blame when passing to a player marked by three players seems more than just a little generous.

Who was to blame for Sevilla's third goal? Or have you forgot that one?

It was the one where DDG came out of his area, tried to control the ball (with the touch of a rapist) and lost it to the Sevilla player to round him and tap in.

I’d take DDG over Ramsdale any day of the week.

I can't agree with that, Singh. Players are required to make their own decisions based on what the opponents are doing on the field. Maguire had his back to the 3 converging Sevilla players. De Gea should have see that, and should have taken advantage of the open spaces that must have been created behind the press. He must surely know by now that Maguire is an oaf and unreliable on the ball. They share equal culpability.

What I found interesting was that when de Gea did clear the ball long we never seemed to be able to get it under control, and never won a header. When Sevilla cleared long it almost always went to one of their forwards who controlled the ball, or flicked it on. Why is that?

Agree with those who say DDG is a great shop stopper. However goal keeping is not just stopping shots. A top top goal keeper will command his box. He will come out for crosses and help his defence. He will also organise the defence as he can see what they cannot. In doing so he should be able to reduce the actual shots he faces to a minimum.

Additionally a top keeper should not be muscled off the ball and opposing forwards should feel intimidated when facing him. Most teams facing Utd know that DDG stays on his line for most crosses and this invites pressure.

Lastly we all know how poor his kicking and passing is under the slightest pressure.

Ultimately if we can get another Keeper who is a good shot stopper albeit not quite as good as DDG but who does have the other attributes he lacks then it is a no brainer for me. As good as DDG is he is not as good as Schmeichel or Van der Saarand that's the level we need a keeper to be at.

I love De Gea, been a great player for us. He just doesn't suit what Ten Hag is trying to achieve. All the while that a player who doesn't have the qualities required to play then way the manager wants starts its going to hurt the overall team performance.

I don't think spending a few hundred k a week for a player that limits the very style the manager is wanting to implememt is a smart move, assuming the funding is there to get who you want.

Its a kot more than jzst the idd mistake, De Gea counters that with lots of outstanding saves. Its that the whole flow of the game changes with the keeper cpmfortable on the ball, the defensive line is higher, defenders having an outlet, the full backs happier to advance, possession being retained and recycled, attacking patterns change. The whole style of the team changes and this for me is the reason why with us no longer paying him 375k a week we should move on after this year.

I think few if any change of personnel will have as big an impact next season as finding the right keeper would.

I have seen him play once for Swindon and to bebfaur they weren't tryinf to have thier keeper play football. I am sure we would all lofe the solution to the keeper problem to come from within though.
