Just watched the game again. We better get another striker as Wilson is nowhere near ready. He does everything at 100mph and most of the time, it doesn't work. We need an established striker to lead our attack. He scored 2 goals last year and I think he will have to be used sparingly.
Was extremely impressed with Pereira. And I thought all the debutants did well too.

I commented further down that to me it loked like there was a gaping hole up top all game, looked like we was playing 4-6-0. I really think we need a commanding cf who will unsettle defences

Wilson, Pereira and maybe Januzaj, as well as Blacket, should go on loan to a PREMIER League teams. I rate all of them very high but need experience. I rate Wilson more than Chicharito, think he has more quality abd talant, but think Chicha will do better as a cover as his far more experienced at top level.

This Romero rumour could have some legs to it if we are going to get Otamendi. They formed part of the Argentine back line and they will know each other well so they could help each other settle and even help Rojo and ADM improve.

I don't know how much this plays a factor when picking targets so I was hoping an Ed could enlighten me? cheers

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed007's Note - It'll not be a mega important factor but clubs will always want players to settle in as early and as best they can and if they have friends or ex-team mates already at a club then it'll obviously help.}

18 Jul 2015 22:25:48
Cheers Ed, I know that Mata and Hererra get on well and you can see it on the pitch too. Hopefully Lewandowski can do the same with Bastian!

Lads, These days it's very difficult to get a prolific striker, I would like to get someone reliable like Van NistelRooy, but many good strikers now belongs to the top clubs and they don't wan't to sell, I don't really rate Cavani high but if PSG or Bayern come knocking for Di Maria, Ed and LVG should request Cavani or Lewandoski in a swap deal, Good that LVG confirmed that Chicharito is staying, and to me he is sharper than RVP and Falcao, he was good in Madrid's last days, him Rooney and Wilson, but who could be the surprise striker? Lacazette? Benzema? Lewandoski? let's wait, LVG will just bring in one defender and a striker, for Sergio Romero, no problem in signing him because he is free agent, his wages demands are less than Nani, and with Valdes out, better to bring him in, Johnston is good but still growing.
I think Woodward is firm that if No Ramos then no De Gea, we should wait and see the developments until the close of the transfer window.

Mind games or DDG truly staying??

18 Jul 2015 16:12:54
For the season I would guess yes, rather have him in goal giving 100% so he can cement his spot as Spain's keeper for the Euros next summer, and then let him go on a free, personally.

Agree4 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 16:38:51
Yup! I would keep him too . Better get one more season of DDG instead of 20m. P.S there is still a chance (minimum though) he may sign a new contract.

we either replace him now or next year.
why wait , start building for the future now

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 23:44:04
We should wait because we will have enough change this summer without adding a new GK. There is no one better than him that is available, so another year of the best we can get is a no brainer. He will be playing at his best to ensure he is Spain's number 1 at the Euros. Next summer, with less changes needed we can get a new GK.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 03:11:24
Let's give ddg more credit Brendan, I am hearing he will play at his best because of the euros a lot, do you not think he will play at his best because he respects the club and because he wants to be the best he can be? He not going let more goals in just because it's the last year of his deal, he will be professional and will work hard, at his best he is the best goalkeeper in the world, let's hope he proves it next season.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 08:13:13
I agree to a point gds, but sometimes you can subconsciously turn off a little, even if just very very slightly. The Euros will just ensure that tiny possibility doesn't happen.

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 09:52:31
he will also sign for a new club in jan .
its asking for trouble imo and will put a lot of pressure on the lad.
having a keeper that doesn't really want to be there and knows he is leaving isn't a great situation .
it won't be easy getting a top keeper this year or next but i would bite the bullet.

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 14:34:49
Not as much pressure as he will get at Real, the first time he concedes a poor goal, and they get their snotty hankies out:-)

19 Jul 2015 16:15:52
thats not our problem

Agree0 Disagree0

19 Jul 2015 17:54:45
Not saying it is, but if he can't hack playing another year here without the pressure affecting him, then a Real move will be a disaster. I'm pretty sure he'll be fine next season, after that who cares. He needs to stay for a season, then go where he likes, and we'll get the best available keeper. The keepers available next season will be the same as this no doubt, so keep the best around for 1 more year.

Guys I apologize for any negativity caused by the De Gea comment! The season has started and there's no excuse to be any negative because what a load of talent we have at our hand.
How impressive was Perreira! I hope LVG gives him chance to make his mark.

About Pedro possibly being tried, I think he is quite versatile, with great speed dribbling and finishing he will be a great asset to out attack.

Otamendi is closing in hopefully too. What a season ahead its going to be!

18 Jul 2015 15:46:22
I think a lot of young players need to get a chance now. I think we have let a lot of academy players move on recently. Would be great to see some of them in the team and under LVG hopefully make themselves regulars in the first team. I hope we get 4-5 players in and around that first team so that they can grow. My picks would be Januzaj, Perriera, Wilson, Johnston, Lingard. Nothing gives young players more confidence than playing regulary. Who know maybe we have got Kanes or Stones in our academy players.

Believable1 Unbelievable1

18 Jul 2015 13:47:03
Romero doesn't make sense to me unless we are selling Lindegaard, because he is obviously not good enough to replace DDG if he is being sold.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 14:28:26
Lindegaard will go I think, his distribution is just not good enough to play the system that LVG wants.

Agree3 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 15:49:31
I would love to see johnston taking number 2 role in that department. If De Gea leaves and with Valdes gone and Lindegaard not getting thumbs up from VG who knows he may stick with Johnston until January before going for Lloris??

18 Jul 2015 16:14:09
i don't think he can afford to gamble on Johnston, too much at stake. DeGea will stay for one more season, I think.

Just watched the game on MUTV.
Thought I'd give my take on it and see what you guys thought.
1st half - I thought the young goalkeeper did extremely well. Big step up from Preston but I'm sure he was on a high from their promotion.
Darmian impressed me a lot as well was good going forward and steady at the back. An improvement on what we had for sure.
Schneiderlin was good patrolling the middle of the park a massive presence and not scared to get stuck in. And of course scored a very good header for us.
Memphis had a good game. Some nice touches, looked dangerous and looks like he will be a very good signing for us.
I'm not sure about Blind playing as a centre back, he seriously lacks pace. Also Mata at RW is a concern for me. He is better in the middle. Would have been good to see him and Memphis swapping every now and again.
Second half - McNair was brilliant at RB, didn't realise he could play there but being versatile is a trait LVG likes. Was very good at getting forward and created a couple of chances for us.
Scweinsteiger! Was just awesome seeing him in a United shirt. Showed his class. I think his experience and leadership will be very important for us.
Herrera just oozes class. He has to be in the team. So good at keeping the ball and moving it quickly. Definitely had the greatest impact out of all the signings from last season.
Pereira looks like a little gem. Would like to see him get more game time next season. Always looked dangerous going forward. Good on the ball. Also worked hard for the team and tracked back and got stuck in.
I thought it was a tough game for us. They were a strong, quick team and it was a good result.
I know it's the first game of the season but I'd like to see more from Shaw and Januzaj this season.

On a separate not I think we are only going to look at a CB and ST only a GK if De Gea leaves.

Cheers.

18 Jul 2015 14:25:59
Good report, Dale. 1st half all the new signings showed promise. We played 3-4-3 with Depay and Mata playing off Rooney. Darmian looked intelligent at RB, Depay showed confidence and a few flashes. For a young player like him, it is better to see ambitious mistakes in his passes than nervous mistakes. But Schneiderlin, by far, as you said, shows a huge presence in the middle. He will make a real difference this season.

At GK, Johnstone did well coming out, and grew in confidence, though his distribution was hesitant and labored.

Second half, 4-4-2. Schweinsteiger looked a captain from the first minute, and had a good understanding with Herrera. On the left side, Blackett was all over the place positionally. Pereira at LM was good on the ball, and put a few good crosses in, though I would like to see him take his man one on one. The right side was more fluid with McNair getting forward and working well with Lingard. McNaIr really knows how to play, I hope to see him keep developing this year.

Wilson and Januzaj were both a little frustrating up front. I love Wilson's speed and work rate, but too many plays just don't quite come off. Januzaj shows his ability at times, but then looks quite soft. One play comes to mind where Pereira put in a perfect cross at chest height and Januzaj stuck his toe at it and missed rather than attacking it with his head. Too often he still plays more like a boy than a man.

Fellaini and Valencia did not play yet, and neither did one David de Gea.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 16:50:41
Wilson needs to vary his speed. He's always moving at 100% making no adjustment for the play around him.

Evans showed why we should transfer him. His problem is that he makes poor choices.

Agreed about Blackett. He seems to have regressed after a promising debut last season.

Agree0 Disagree2

18 Jul 2015 13:07:02
I have a theory. I think LVG told Fellini that he wasn't in his long term plans a few days before he got sent off last season. There were murmurs in the media that LVG was in the process of talking to players about their future just before that game and Fellaini was clearly distressed that game. Now with the additions of schweinsteiger and schneiderlin, him. It even making minutes in a pre season rotation game and LVGs clear dislike in playing him as a 10, I reckon the writing is on the wall and he should leave.

Believable0 Unbelievable6

18 Jul 2015 13:37:41
LvG mentioned that since Fellaini will be missing the 1st few games of the season due to suspension therefore he has more time to prepare and LvG wanted to see the other players now.

Agree2 Disagree1

18 Jul 2015 14:01:57
He is banned for the first 3 games hence not playing yesterday, lvg said he wants to look at other players. Not heard any rumours of him leaving.

Agree4 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 14:06:08
Disagree!
No matter how ruthless LVG is , he repects the player if he is playing well. Fellaini and Young were our best players during our good run and LVG clearly said Fellaini was undroppable under his scintillating form. He clearly rates Fellaini and knows how to use him. Fellaini may not be first choice but certainly will be a good squad player and will give different option to choose from.

Agree4 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 14:08:43
LVG clearly said fellaini didn't play today because he has more time to reach match fitness as he's banned for the first 3 games of the season and for much of last season fellaini played as our most advanced midfielder hence why he scored a few goals getting onto crosses into the box so i don't see what makes you think lvg won't wanna play him as a "no 10" as a plan B option when we struggle to break teams down which was a recurring theme of last season

Agree2 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 14:27:58
Not a bad theory, but he was too much of a difference maker last season. I think most of us like the idea of Fellaini coming on in the last 10 or 15 minutes to change our attack. I hope LVG sees it that way.

18 Jul 2015 15:33:17

For all the fans who were frustated because of today's game and doubt quality of our squad. I suggest u to wait for the game against spurs and judge then. No matter how well or poor we play in this champions cup, I will judge our team only during league game. I know how hard it will be to bring fluency in the game with new players. Let's wait for the league to begin and we can judge how fair we play.

One thing Fellaini is particularly good at is marking players and he may play those european games that require a certain player to be marked or those were the affairs are cagey, and probably the teams that lack height(europe) he could be a massive weapon to have.

So, Ramos just started the game against Roma with the captain's armband and I think we can put this one to bed. Benzema on the bench though (not saying he's a target). Let's get Otamendi and I'm starting to think that we won't sign any striker as Memphis was not on the wing today and LVG said Chicharito will get a chance again when he joins.

ZIKO

If we don't sign a top striker I would doubt our ability to finish in the top four because goal scoring was a serious issue last season.

Agree3 Disagree3

18 Jul 2015 11:01:04
I got to be honest aswell ziko and say that hernandez more than deserves another chance. If he is played regularly he will get us 15-20 a season and some important ones at that too.

If there is a surprise striker coming In I would be happy with our 3 we currently have along with one other.

Agree1 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 11:01:53
IMO top 4 finish is not a question, but for the title we do need a striker yes. Just thinking that if LVG's targets are unavailable we won't sign someone for the sake of signing. On the other hand, RVP was moved on, so maybe we have strong believe that on striker is sure of signing.

18 Jul 2015 11:07:20
Red Man goal creation was a bigger issue last season and add to that the inability of our strikers to finish the chances that were created.

Mumbai boy

We should benefit from a stronger midfield base to create from with the creative players not having to work quite as hard to defend, plus expect more goals from midfield and Memphis may bring unpredictability to our play. However it is essential we have some danger in the penalty area and some consistent goals.

A couple of questions for you all.
1. LVG has made the statement that he may bring a surprise addition to the forward line. Coukd this be a youngster we ate nOT talking about or an older head with year or 2 left?
2. If Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin cement there place in midfield could we see Carrick make a permanent move into central defence? I only see this happening if we don't buy a top CD.
Any thoughts?

18 Jul 2015 08:04:29

Some points about today's game.
The first half was pretty lousy. LVG had the first half team talk as "Don't get aggressive, I don't want any injuries"IMO.
Darmian was very impressive and defended well. He was pretty good at attacking also which we could not see much. Schneiderlin was good too, just Carrick was not good today hence their chemistry was not fluent. Depay was not able to see too much of ball hence unable to demonstrate his skill but yet there was a time where he showed couple of tricks which shows what he can do. May be he would have played better at the wing but who knows. In summary, we were poor with no team cohesion. It was like everyone (except Darmian, Schneiderlin and Depay who were eager to prove themselves) were playing to prevent injuries and make it slow. Defensive combination of Jones and Blind was very poor with Johnstone always needed to play like Neuer to clear the ball.
The second was massive improvement on 1st. Maybe everyone in this team were eager to impress. They were more aggressive and fast. I must say Perreira is a real player on making. He was fast, visionary and had couple of tricks under his sleeves. Hope he does not leave the 44 jersey as Januzaj showed the same excitement on the same number :D . Wilson was trying to exhaust the defence by running at every chance and januzaj was pretty decent but was not clinical enough. Schweinsteiger played very well and constantly kept running towards the opposition with the ball. He had good passing range and ball control but towards the end, he did played some sloppy passes. Herrera was fantastic, playing the ball as fast he could with excellent first touch and ball control. He would have made some difference in the first half. Our defensive combination of Smalling and Evans were also better than Jones/Blind. Smalling may had some sloppy moments but i certainly can see him in our starting XI along with our new CB.
Overall, We have very talented youngsters in our squad with plenty of class players at first team. But it is not clear what formation LVG is trying to play. Today both team played with 4231 formation with Depay and Januzaj taking the no. 10 role. I would prefer a midfield 3 though with no no. 10.
My first team would be DDG on the back with Darmian, Smalling, hopefully Otamendi and Shaw at the back. Schweinsteiger at the base of the midfield with Herrera and Schneiderlin ahead. Depay/Young or Perreira in the LW with Mata/Januzaj/Di Maria on right wing. No competition for Rooney at the front line so Rooney/Wilson at top

18 Jul 2015 08:52:48
Good assessment I agree with all of this. Also i'd like to add the splitting balls from Memphis were real quality also in addition to the flicks n tricks. i'd like to see Memphis on the right and Pereirra on the left for one of these pre season games I think that would cause some real problems.

Club America have had a couple of games more than us so were a bit sharper, they pressed quite well so it was a good test for us, I think everyone in the first half just took it easy, but I'm not sure why Memphis was in the middle and mata on the left, I would have swapped them although Memphis and Rooney briefly swapped positions on a few occasions. Second half was better for 15-20 mins as the players had a point to prove, adnan had a chance but he pretty much refused to put his body on the line to get there. Standouts were pereira, bastian, darmian and Johnstone. Shaw also looked a bit better, made plenty of runs down the flank. Distribution from both keepers wasn't great, something we struggle with without ddg. Wilson worked hard and had good movement but little service. The game sort of petered out towards the end but all round not a bad first game against a team with more match sharpness, I think sharpness is the key word here.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jul 2015 10:27:35
Adnan not putting his body on the line is something I would expect to see in a pre season game, not worth getting injured for. Surprised not to see morgan and memphis in your standouts I felt morgan was everywhere and memphis played some excellent balls and was always available.

Andy,

How can you have watched that game and not thought mentioning schneiderlin as important, he was immense in the first half, running everywhere and played 2 perfect 50-60 yards balls to feet that scholes would have been proud of. His long and short passing are going to be a massive asset this season, his energy is something we have lacked for a while in that position, we have an amazing player on our hands.

Schweinsteiger controlled everything in the 2nd half, he had 4 quick players ahead of him and used them to perfection, it all seemed a bit too easy for him, a bit like Pirlo in recent years who was a class above everybody else that is how Bastian played, not sure he will get away with that against Stoke on a Tuesday night though!

Pereira was man of the match in the 2nd half though, every time he got the ball I was excited, he looked fearless and that under 20 tournament has obviously given him confidence to express himself. Depay also played really well, some of his touched and one twos got me excited for what he can do when fully fit.

Other than that the tempo was that of the first pre season game, club America are a good side and there were many positives to take out of a tough game on a tough pitch.

I agree morgan probably was one of the standouts, missed him on my list, he played some lovely cross field passes so hopefully we won't see Rooney dropping back and doing that now. Memphis had a couple of nice touches and passes too but I feel he should be out wide, also he had a chance to play young in but was greedy and whacked it into the defender infront of him. Still looks a good prospect though.
Full match is on YouTube I think if anyone that missed it has some spare time

Has to be said and I know its just a training game and has no bearing on how the season will go but there still looks to be a gaping hole up front. I still feel we need a commanding cf and without getting into the whole rooney debate I don't think he is the answer.

Swill, I don't think you are negative. Idiotic perhaps? This is the 1st pre season game with players trying to build up fitness. We also changed all 11 players at half time. re,ember last year when we won pretty much all our pre season games? It didn't really represent our season did it? I don't think we will win the league this year as we have too many new players to integrate and that will take time. however, everyone we have bought will improve our team and I don't think we have finished yet. You need to chill out mate and enjoy the ride, but if you are hoping we win the league I fear you will be disappointed

i never said we get relegated i said we won't win the league all the excuses of our 1st pre season match is just pure excuses we where poor for most of the match u people just don't want to accept it if u ok with passing the ball back to keeper and hit a long ball its fine but for me we r man utd we should be playing with more freedom more passion . some one make me understand why play depay in hole and play mata out wide i may be idotic u guys r genius explain let's go by stats too how many assist did depay had last season play him in his best position he will perform .

Haha this is the most nonsense I've seen on here for a while. we actually played pretty well for a first pre season game, I watched the match and enjoyed seeing ALL 4 new players play well and also a cameo from pereira in the 2nd half and johnstone who looked great, then I go to sleep wake up and have to read this tripe.

Beast is negative but at least he speaks in English and backs up his points, Dwill, are you going to be like this all season, this site depressed me last year when people were complaining so much even after victories, if you are complaining after the 1st game of pre season when we changed all 11 players and nobody has had a game for 2 months then I'm not sure watching united is for you.

18 Jul 2015 14:24:17
I don't know what's more funny Dwillyou overreacting about our seasons hopes based on one pre season game or overreacting at the posters replies about you being so doom and gloom

Last season proved you take the pre seasons results with a pinch of salt. Realistically the time to judge whether we are able to contest for the title will be after 6-10 games in the season where we can actually see where we stand compared to chelsea and city/arsenal

And with regards to depay i think the reasoning behind playing him behind the striker is that it adds real unpredictability to his game as he can take defenders both left and right and gives us a direct option to goal

Impressed with the first half, Morgan bossing it, Memphis showing signs but Darmian, our almost forgotten signing looks like he's been there for years. Special mention for Sam the save in goal also really impressed with him also.

morgan played well , darmian good in def but very little in attack he look more of ball playing cb but he will improve . depay i m sure playing center is not his role play mata in h0le he is our best player in tat position . i was really impressed with sam we don't need to buy a back up gk . but over all boring game 2nd half was much better , smalling again gave the ball and evans look good

18 Jul 2015 11:04:36
AJH,

What do you mean we won't win the league, we are Man U for God sake, I only started supporting because we win the league, what is the point if we don't? I saw us pass it back to the keeper and keep possession 4 times, we never did this under Lord SAF and LVG doesn't have a clue, I don't get why you aren't panicking after we won that game, we will be lucky to get champions league this season and we've spent 200 million this summer already and not bought anybody decent.

18 Jul 2015 13:31:26
I thought Darmian was very good. Good pace, smart defender, able to go forward and looked sharp.

But its a mexican team in preseason so its NOTHING to go by.

We will see a different team in the coming weeks and against Spurs.

LVG is going to have some serious headaches i feel as our squad is getting large. If we are playing with one up front you are limiting yourself as to who will come striker wise, with rooney there.

Banter please Ed

I have a question on the whole DDG saga. Our great Dave the Save has grown to be a hero it seems guarding the net at the theatre of dreams. I would love big Dave to stay and become a real legend but he will most likely be moving and to please those critical fans in Madrid he will have to do more than Bow in front of the crowds in the Santiago Bernabeu.

On a serious note what do you guys think RM will do if they buy DDG and the fans give him a tough time because of Athletico etc and it effects his performances for the season and the fans become very irate with him? would Real Madrid

(A) Allow him another season to regain form!

(B) Demote him to 2nd choice / Bench

(C) Sell DDG & look to acquiring a new GK - Courtais etc

(D) Complain to UTD that we sold them a lookalike lol

Whatever the outcome my wish is for Dave to stay

I am glad its weekend, hoping we do better than last weekends efforts on the signings - very ordinary effort - pull your finger out Woody!

Looking forward to seeing the boys tomorrow morning.

Interesting LVG confirming AT LEAST 2 more positions need addressing for squad balance.

Safe bet - keeper and central defender
Value bet - keeper, central defender and CF
Punt bet - central defender, RW and CF
Woody Special - 2 x CD, RW and CF plus keeper

And another thing
I love ddg
But more importantly we get a centre half
My god we actt have enough of them but it would be great to have a top class one that can complete 5games i'm a row. what's going on with the injuries.
CB has to be top priority
From what iv read from other posters about LVG philosophy we might manage without another CF

Believable3 Unbelievable1

18 Jul 2015 01:04:34
Right here goes. I know not everyone will agree but o think ddg owes us
If we cast our minds back to his first season he cost a lot of money cost us a lot pf goals and points we lost the league on gd
I would have no problem with that if he was willing to put something back in for the faith showed
Goalkeeper s have long career s he has time to fulfil his ambition elsewhere and should do what he thinks is best for himself and his family.
But my own pride in my work wouldn't allow me to walk away from an employer gave me such a huge chance to become what I am
I know it doesn't work like that but one more season (in which we could be contenders an he could tip the balance) singe a short contract so as utd don't get there pants pulled down and off with you np hard feelings
Like is anyone fed up with rvp. No because whatever he did or didn't do in that one season heade a difference

I thought we had done this one to death. He has a contract, he plays for us, we pay him. You could argue without DDG we wouldn't have finished 4th last year. You could also argue that if my auntie had balls she would be my uncle. As we have just seen with Delph, there are very few players who behave the way you are suggesting. How many players are du led unceremoniously by their clubs, it's a 2 way street and players know this. I don't think DDh owes us anything. We bought him, when his contract is up is free to leave, or we can sell him now.
