A question for you all on here! This morning we were linked with Coentrao. My question is, would it be unfair on Shaw to bring in a more experienced left back to compete with?
Its either a silly rumour or just plain stupid imo. We also have blind and rojo who can cover lb
Not sure about fair but i think it would be a bit stupid
Agreed, it would be ludicrous to sign another LB no matter how good.
It might also mean LVG sees Rojo primarily as a CB which would mean another LB coming in to challenge Shaw.
So, our CBs could be Jones/Rojo/ with McNair/Thorpe as backup and one or both of Smalling/Evans leaving.
There is surely no need to sign Coentrao or someone of his ilk when we have Shaw/Rojo/Blackett at a push for LB. Seems like a bullsh--t rumour to me. Almost as if papers make up random, slightly believable stories about us to fill quiet days.
Even Blind could play LB. Reece James too. How many LBs do we need ? :P

There's a lot of talk of selling some players especially mata and soon i think rvp will come into that group. So here's the thing. The plan is to have champions League next year, right? That would mean we'd have to play 4 competitions again. Have we forgotten how much strain that puts on a squad in one year of being without European football?
Do we just want to make it only to be something like Liverpool this year? They've spent huge money too and currently seem to be struggling in both competitions. We already have a reduced squad amd can't just keep buying because of the ffp.
In my opinion there are a lot of players that should go before those two. Young, Valencia, Cleverley, Anderson, Nani, Zaha etc should all go permanently.
If we go 4-3-3 then we don't really need either of them next season. Mata won't fit the formation and RVP will be behind Falcao, Rooney and possibly Wilson in the pecking order.
They are being paid a lot to be bit part players imo.
I know LVG wants to play Rooney deeper in that 4-3-3 formation but after a few weeks he will realise it is not worth it and we will be over stacked upfront if RVP is still with us.
Zaha could be useful as cover for one of the wide players, again depends how he progresses.
Beast
That, i can completely agree with. But are we surely moving towards the 4-3-3? For that we'd need more mfs and wingers.
For the sake of the system i wouldn't mind selling of big players. But then players at risk should include all three of mata, rvp and Rooney.
The 4-3-3 works best with goal scoring wingers without a doubt, otherwise it is too narrow. Falcao I think is our best striker so he should be the main striker. We would then potentially need a new wide forward to compete with Januzaj and Di Maria with Rooney dropping into the midfield 3 as the most advanced player alongside Herrera and Blind / new signing.
Fresh
Here's the thing though. If we're trying for a perfect squad position for position, then why treat Rooney special? He's not a midfielder. Wouldn't a midfield of hererra, blind plus someone like strootman/vidal do better?
They probably would but he is now captain and 'undroppable'. I also feel that he does add a goal threat from the midfield 3 and would do a decent job.
I don't think rooneys role in a 4-3-3 would change that much from what it is now and i think he will get 20 + goals from there
IMBS - For the wages and his square peg-nes I would sell Rooney in a heart beat. However LVG thinks the exact opposite so there is no point in us speculating on Rooney. Best for us to predict with the one certainty factored in and that is Rooney will be playing in any formation according to the gaffer. Therefore it has to be RVP and Mata that have their roles at the club analysed if we sign Falcao on a permanent.
They are too good for the bench and on too much money to be bit parts.
I think we need two wide attackers if we go 4-3-3 as we sold Welbeck who could have adequately covered that position if necessary. This is why I couldn't understand the logic in his sale. But if he wanted to start every week then he had to be moved on.
Old Trafford just feels bigger and his slowness really stands out when we are at home to me, psychological. But yeah you are right again Jred.
Beast
No idea what i'm right about .
But your right i am right ☺
Beast; as far as your first point, I have to agree. However that theory relies on us sticking with a 4-3-3 game in, game out. Whereas if we were to keep those players it would give us scope to adapt our 11 each week if necessary, and I imagine LvG would see the options available by keeping all of them an attractive one. I know I do. So long as we can do that and keep them all happy.
Flappington - Yes it's important to be able to adapt tactics dependent on availability and opposition. The trouble is that 4-3-3 is so different to the 3-5-2 that we would need so many versatile players that we would lack the overall quality needed to compete at the very top.
I don't mind having a few jack of all trades in the team like Blind & Rojo for example, who are good players but not world class, you can afford a couple of those to enable flexibility. Our wage structure is such that to have top class players for every possible position for each of those formations would be practically impossible, let alone cover for those roles with an injury or two.
Squad harmony would also be a massive issue. If we have a run of 3-4 games where 4-3-3 is needed, that would mean a lot of time on the side line for some expensive and top quality players, same goes if we went with 3 at the back.
We need to build for our primary formation and have squad players able to adapt not world class ones because FFP wouldn't allow it nor would agents.

Really excited for Sunday's game - our first 'big' team of the season. A win would really do our confidence so much good. I think it is also going to be very interesting to see if he goes with Mata or Januzaj. If Mata doesn't play in these big games then I think he will be off in January with Januzaj rotating with Rooney. It will also be really interesting to see if he sticks another midfielder in and plays just Falcao or just RVP. I think both will play simply because we don't have much cover in the middle as it is.
I think he will go with Mata, he was choosing him at the start and it is only the Falcao signing that has changed things for Mata with Rooney dropping deeper.
This will be a good test, as Everton haven't been great this season so they need to turn things around soon. Can't wait to see us in action again, no Europe is too long between games, horrible.
I agree, I feel really deprived of football this year. I think Mata is currently the best out of the two so should start behind Falcao and RVP.
I would love to get the stage where our best team doesn't need changing in big games - it is our opposition that need to change.
Its a good time to play everton they had a tough game yesterday
It is. I hope we play our strongest team rather than change to be more defensive etc. This is our first big game of the season.
Rooney herrera out mata januzaj in?

LVG isn't like Moyes, he won't go defensive and try pinch a victory. Mata will come in for Rooney obviously. Fletcher in for Herrera (not my ideal choice but it's almost a certainty).
Mata for Rooney is a cert, and I think Fletcher for Herrera just because he is the most similar player, as far as dynamism goes. I'm interested in the back 4. He said McNair is in, so you'd assume the same 4 as v West Ham? But that means dropping Blackett. It's an interesting decision to make for sure.
Fletcher may play. But I won't be surprised if Pereira is given a chance. Maybe Fellaini for like 50-60 minutes.
I feel Fletcher doesn't really provide that much in attack or defense. I'd rather bring him on in the last 20 minutes or so to ensure solidity in the end.
Fellaini may start given he is playing against his former club, is great at heading balls and I thought we were bad at set-pieces at west ham and he would great defensively.

One for Ed007 if he's around.
Hey mate,
Me again. Look, I know it's been a while, but I just wanted to apologise for my rant at you a few weeks back. I think we both misunderstood each other and I just got annoyed.
It's no excuse of course but my wife had just been taken into hospital and we had just lost out on a new house having dumped a few grand into the process, I was just royally pissed off at everything and venturing onto the interweb was probably a very bad idea!
Anyway, hopefully no hard feelings, and I apologise for getting angry at the time.
All the best mate.
Steve (RedDawn)
{Ed007's Note - Cheers but don't be worrying about it, Steve, I actually had to look back to see what we were 'debating'. Forget about it pal, I hope your Mrs is keeping better and you get a house sorted.}

Good to hear that Ji Sung Park has been made a club ambassador. He was never a world beater but gave his all for the club.
I think the Japanese/Far East market had something to do with it. Apparently he is due to be at the Everton game on Sunday
