Rumour that a cheeky bid of €40M has gone in for Declan Rice.

Perthredmike

{Ed004's Note - Cant see that being enough to sign him and I dont rate him highly enough to bid any higher}

1.) 30 Mar 2019 04:18:03
I guess we’ll see if it’s just a rumour or if it’s real interest.

2.) 30 Mar 2019 10:32:08
I like Rice, he looks a real talent. However, we have Garner coming through who could be a real talent. I think with Matic, Herrera, Fred and McTominay all able to play in a more defensive role in midfield we could afford to not sign a player like Rice and gently blood Garner.

3.) 30 Mar 2019 12:33:56
For the money involved I'd rather put it towards the defence to be honest. Something tells me if he moves it'll be to City. Then 3 years on loan before vanishing.

{Ed004's Note - Not good enough on the ball for a Pep side}

4.) 30 Mar 2019 15:58:53
Cant see anyone else going in for him.

5.) 30 Mar 2019 18:59:52
Think he’s already good enough to get in our midfield.
Matic is slowing up and the others are only average bar Pogba on his day. Even then we still need more creativity from somewhere.

6.) 31 Mar 2019 10:50:09
A different question from me but why is the bid in Euros not pounds. We are in the PL, so are West Ham. I think that in itself means the rumour is most likely false/ inaccurate. Or maybe I am being stupid.

{Ed002's Note - It will have come from some mainland European website I imagine.}

29 Mar 2019 03:15:06
An article just came out saying United's two candidates for the DoF role are internal. John Mutagh and Marcel Bout?

Murtagh was discussed when his name first came up, does anyone know anything about Bout? (no pun intended)

Perthredmike

1.) 29 Mar 2019 04:19:29
Marcel Bout is one of the best choice as per Ed002 if I remember correctly.
Hope there is some truth in those reports.

2.) 29 Mar 2019 07:30:00
Hi,
Interesting piece in the Telegraph. Suggests it may be a Technical Director rather than a Director of Football. The Techhnical Director would work with the manager and both report into CEO.

3.) 29 Mar 2019 11:30:09
Bout time we got this sorted.

4.) 29 Mar 2019 11:58:35
What exactly is the difference between a tech director and a DoF - is it level of influence or seniority in structure, or just one position having two titles?

{Ed002's Note - A DoF would be responsible for all footballing sides and the scouting system. Typically a TD would be responsible for the scouting and often setting a style of play.}

5.) 29 Mar 2019 12:18:46
What do you think Bout is a good choice? Just curious. What are his qualities?

{Ed002's Note - Bout has extensive coaching experience, particularly at Feyenoord and Bayern Munich and joined Manchester United with LvG in a scouting role, for which he is very well respected in the business. I don't recall what I said before but you can search the site.}

6.) 29 Mar 2019 13:56:31
Thanks for clarifying that Ed. if we have shifted our focus to finding a TD then i take that as Woodward wanting to keep first team matters under his thumb. Not a good thing as he has gone far too long and caused many issues simply because there is no one to challenge his opinion and stance on matters he has little experience with.
On the plus side us moving towards establishing a style of play should make our recruitment better in the long term. LvG tried to do this by getting all the footballing teams playing the same way and changing the scouting / training. Only issue was his style did not suit what the fans wanted.

{Ed002's Note - I am far from convinced.}

7.) 29 Mar 2019 14:46:54
I am not convinced either Ed. Unless Woodward wants to trust others' with more experience in footballing matters and let go a little, the structure is not going to do its job. But as a fan, i can only hope he does soon and enjoy the good football in the meanwhile.

8.) 01 Apr 2019 04:53:28
Thanks for the reply Ed002.

{Ed002's Note - You are welcome.}

9.) 01 Apr 2019 11:55:32
Given Bout was brought in by LVG would he not want to bring in players to match LVG’s style instinctively?

22 Mar 2019 03:04:39
Morning Ed's reports are coming out this morning that Ander Herrera May he signing with PSG? Does anyone know if there is any substance to this?
We're all aware that his contract is up for renewal. I for one would not like to see him go. He demonstrates the heart and fight we need the players to have. A commodity this squad is low on at times.

Perthredmike

1.) 22 Mar 2019 08:26:49
It's a bit worrying when we prioritise keeping the likes of Jones but seem to not be worried about losing Herrera. Who in my opinion deserves an extension and should be valued higher at this club.

2.) 22 Mar 2019 09:28:05
One of those ones if reports are true that psg are offering him a salary increase and a 3/ 4 year deal then i don't think we will compete with that as we should be wary of offering multi year deals to players entering their 30s.

Especially after the alexis sanchez debacle. But herrera is very much low down on the list of players i would like to see leave in the summer.

Ironically the perfect spanish midfielder (saul) to replace herrera will be playing at the other club in manchester next season.

Shows what you can do if you plan and prepare properly for transfer windows and are good at recruitment.

3.) 22 Mar 2019 12:22:32
Woodward has snookered us behind the black ball. A club with our turnover and money making ability is currently at our capacity for wages. Woodward and the club's lack of a plan is stopping us from moving forward. Ed's short termism in signing players on huge wages ie Zlatan and Alexis was a disaster.

Ed002 said we were in precarious situation with our wages which was solved when we paid Zlatan off and got him off the wage bill. Alexis wages dwarf our best players. So we have very little wiggle room to get new players in without getting players off the wage bill. De Gea, Herrera are let run their contracts dangerously low but Smalling and Jones are signed up even though both could/ should be surplus.

The man with a career in banking might be good at getting a top dollar noodle sponsorship but the actual running of the football side of the club is a shambles.

4.) 22 Mar 2019 14:43:55
What happened to the talk of a Director of Football being appointed? Where we'll see Herrera getting a contract instead of Phil Jones.

It's fantastic that Ole and Phelan are at the wheel but we'll still need a better football man than Ed to take care of the football matters.

5.) 22 Mar 2019 15:17:01
Cant see that happening any time soon Killerscones. Woodward has both power and influence in who could and would be appointed and as its obvious he models himself off Kim Jong-un, why would he want to relinquish power. We shouldn't just settle for, or get for getting sake a DoF but really can't see it happening whilst EW is in his current role.

6.) 22 Mar 2019 16:53:28
We have a director of football: Ed Woodward. He should just cut out the middle man and appoint himself as manager as well.

7.) 23 Mar 2019 01:18:48
Well then the same problems from the last nearly 6 years are going to keep happen. History repeats itself if there isn't change. Please Ed do the right thing. Give the football side of things over to someone in the know and fade into the corporate background where you're a wizard. Horses for courses.

8.) 23 Mar 2019 09:08:37
Is he even a wizard on the financial side? It can't be that difficult to sell marketing your company with a club like united.

9.) 23 Mar 2019 18:11:32
Mort. Could you do it to that extent? Ed W is absolutely brilliant at what he does. Unfortunately the club passed too much power to him. That’s not his fault. He’s just in the wrong position. But he’s an intelligent bloke and very good on the financial side. Unfortunately the club let him be in charge of too much and now us fans are paying the price.

10.) 23 Mar 2019 22:43:09
Wazza, ed002 has said the problem with finding a Director of football is Woodward. The man with the job to find a DoF, doesn't want to relinquish control. He'd rather spend the entire summer flashing a bit of thigh at Gareth Bale or another "superstar" player instead of trying to build a squad with an identity.

He's a huge problem on the football side of things.

11.) 24 Mar 2019 08:16:37
Mumbles I don’t dispute that and I agree with you 100%.

Mort was questioning if he’s good on the financial side. He clearly is. He’s got where he has because he’s an expert in his field. Unfortunately somebody decided to give him more control over matters he has little experience with and EW decided to go for it. I don’t think any of us can question his ability on financial matters. It’s football matters where he’s seemingly is out of his depth.

12.) 24 Mar 2019 10:00:37
He's perceived as an expert in his field. Is it really so hard to propose commercial deals between a globally known sports team and globally known companies? I think ed1 said it best previously.

26 May 2016 04:00:34
Ryan Giggs future - supposedly. "Manchester United are understood to have offered Ryan Giggs a role designed to bridge the gap between their first team and Under 21s.
I think while appearing to be a backward step for this years assistant manager (I think that was in name only and Giggs had little input), it would provide him the opportunity to hone his coaching, and team mannigerial skills. While still being close to Mourinho to learn from him as he has from SAF, and LVG.
It also provides an opportunity to get very close to the Man Utd youngsters who wou, d become his lifeblood if he is to ultimately get the opportunity he so dearly wants.
What do you all think?

Perthredmike

1.) 26 May 2016 07:50:59
I would say this is the right move as long as Warren Joyce is leaving on his own terms. If we were to force Joyce out to make way for Giggs then I wouldn't be as happy.

Hopefully Giggs can show what he is made of now with his own squad.

2.) 26 May 2016 09:31:29
If Warren Joyce leaves I'd give Giggs the chance to show his credentials there if he doesn't want to leave United, fair play to Joyce wanting to go prove himself elsewhere, for me that would put Joyce ahead of Giggs in terms of managing United in the future.

A win tonight vs Arsenal will see us level on points with 3rd place Spurs!

Who would have even dream of that 3 months ago.

Perthredmike

1.) 10 Mar 2019 09:59:42
A 6-0 win and we leapfrog Spurs. Surely that's got to be an incentive for the Goobers to throw the match. Lol.

2.) 10 Mar 2019 10:38:03
amazing run. do ya worry that the temperamental players will put in a stinker if their feelings get hurt next season tho? seen it at chelsea a few seasons now and my wonder is whether manU are stuck trying to find siccess rather than build again?

3.) 10 Mar 2019 11:04:54
@Faithhinworks - No. I don't think the players are particularly temperamental (with one or two exceptions), just that JM crushed the spirit of the team.

So long as that doesn't happen again, and it took JM (one of the most toxic managers around) a couple of years to manage that, I think we'll be fine.

Tuanzebe nearing a return for Aston Villa. Possibly after the International break.
I hope he has a good run to the end of the season to set himself up for a return to Old Trafford next season.

Perthredmike

19 Feb 2019 03:58:26
This is the first season since 1985/ 86 that the Reds have completed a hat-trick of London wins over Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea away from home in a single campaign.

18 Feb 2019 23:38:51
That was a good performance and great response by the team last night. Everyone was watching how the players an Ole would respond to the PSG result. There's quite a bit of pressure in that. This squad, which has had a few accusations aimed at it in the last few months showed I think that they have turned a corner.
Well done, good result. 3rd away game in the capital against a top 6 team and third win. 6 goals for, 1 against. In those games!

Perthredmike

1.) 19 Feb 2019 19:40:54
Prm. this squad (with others) has finished in top 4 twice in 5 years the accusations they have faced are legitimate. They have massively underperformed For years .
They will get plaudits they deserve when they perform when they don't they will be called out i see nothing wrong In that.

17 Feb 2019 10:21:08
Reports are coming out that Ed has appointed OGS full time manager but no announcement until the end of the season.
Possibly paper talk, possibly not.
Nothing on the United website though.

Perthredmike

{Ed002's Note - Well if there is not going to be an announcement until the end of the season it should not surprise you there is nothing on the club web site.}

1.) 17 Feb 2019 13:57:50
LOL Ed

My penneth, “Reports” will likely be made up by journalists so they can ask the club to comment/ deny the rumours. Gives something to write about. Ole has had some good results but I really don’t think a decision should be made yet. Imagine losing our next two games and/ or having a bad run. The club have jumped into poor decisions previously and such a decision would demonstrate the paucity of our whole decision making structure. Why bother with a DOF if Woodward just makes snap decisions?

Wait would be my advice and judge later. I still think Pochettino with a DOF is the best bet at the moment but won’t rule Ole out if he does something spectacular. I appreciate there is an outpouring of affection for one of our own. I would add that if there is to be a change of owner a decision now would be foolish.

2.) 17 Feb 2019 15:29:02
Ed002 😂.

3.) 17 Feb 2019 15:31:07
Thanks ED, as always.

4.) 18 Feb 2019 00:23:00
Agreed here, i reckon sentiment has a big say in opinions - i think Ole is a good lad ("about the place" as they say) and has picked up the mood. However on considered opinion, (i initially backed Ole btw) i think poch is the better choice to take forward. He has absolutely proven what we need - bring young/ unproven players along, blend home grown along with "right fit" purchases - not world record signings for show. We know who has to go and who our best players are - it seems obvious. As said by others above unless something utterly remarkable happens (ownership change, champs lge win ha) I think a DOF and Poch would be absolutely right. This time next year people may say "we should have got Ole at the time". don't worry, he'll be at Molde or Southampton or Stoke etc and ripe for a pay day at that time. His philosophy will likely be similar. maybe Paul Scholes/ Ryan Giggs could do a similar job by then who knows. Anyway, there's a rebuild as we really deep down all knew needed. I like Ole, he is a legend and i'd love to see him shove my opinion down my throat - really i would. However here we are struggling for 4th? Give me a proven builder to get us back to where we should rightfully be given the apparent "Brand" we now follow.

5.) 18 Feb 2019 12:39:17
Most of pochs signings are wrong fit.

6.) 18 Feb 2019 19:05:47
Bohzman,
Struggling for 4th is a terrific achievement in a very short time given how far adrift we were when OGS took over. Also do you not remember how many teams were on our shoulders threatening to turn us into a definite and mid table "also ran" team? How short memory is.
Ole did not start with a level playing field!

7.) 18 Feb 2019 23:48:16
Theres a rebuild needed or have i missed something here? Given, Ole's a grand lad; even a mighty fourth place will placate some too evidently (the Glazers too one may suspect) . Lots out and some in/ promoted required to solve this huge mess - trust experience for this bit though. Nothing ruled in or out except seeing all options equally . Not a level playing field? Little was expected of him, remember?

Militao has joined Real Madrid so he’s one we can cross off.

It will be interesting to watch Zidane (this time around) as it looks like he will build what will be known as his team (despite the obvious influences from above) rather than managing a team of stars he inherited.

From our current group I think the best candidate is Ander Herrera but he looks about to leave. At least when he is on the pitch he works, directs and talks to the other players. He’s the closest thing we have at the minute and that has been sorely lacking while he has been out injured.

I find it funny that people say a process was not followed. You or I have no idea how much analysis went into how ever many prospective candidates there were. Just because it might not have been made public doesn’t mean that it did not happen.
