Can any of the eds help with whether the shirt number could ha e held up the final details of a signing and how do image rights for a number usually play out if at all relevant?

I get that players have brands etc which have been built around their Jersey no. There is also a big deal made of certain Jersey numbers at different clubs and a desire to keep players happy and comfortable if they like a certain no.
I'm not suggesting this is the case with varane at all as I've no idea what caused the delay, but I can see where clubs can run into issues.
By all accounts martial didn't like losing no 9 to zlatan.
No7 is a coveted Jersey at united as is 11 imo . 10 at Madrid no9 at Newcastle.
Messi has gone back to his old no 30 at psg so no10 was not a big deal breaker to him obviously.
Clubs can't swap and change too often as fans pay for replica jerseys so all in all its a tricky one.
Personally apart from nos11 7 and maybe 16 at united there are no other iconic nos at the club despite us having had great players in all positions at the club.
I'm not even sure at Liverpool what the iconic nos are? Maybe 7 9 or 6.
Chelsea? City? Spurs?
