Looks like we've lost another youth, isak hansen aaroen.

It's a shame but was always going to happen, his contract expires this summer and he was not going to sign a new one. Wish him well.

Mainoo is younger and was ahead of him, wasn’t going to make it unfortunately.

Such a shame, I think he's one of the better players from the u23.
Does the announcement mention how much Werder Bremen paid for him or if there's a buyback clause?

I don't think we've 'lost' him.

With the number of young players we have throughout the academy, only a very, very few will ever make it at the club.

Many will still go on to have decent careers somewhere else. We can't stockpile decent players in hope.
We've been doing that for far too long.

At least, if reports are worth anything, we finally seem to be using a bit of sense in the transfer negotiations, with regard to future clauses.

I think he plays as a 8/ 10. Too many players ahead of him Mainoo, mount and including some coming through the academy. Spurs just signed a really good young talent in Bergvall. one to watch for in a few years.

Its a good move for him and the club as the deal by the sounds of it gives us some of the upside if he makes it.

Spot on Noucamp99. Mainoo and Garnacho are the minimum standard now and unfortunately young players need a bit of luck where their position they play in the first team becomes available and they get a chance. Unless they are so much better than what we have then there is little point keeping hold of them, ''just in case''. Ensuring we are in a good position for future transfers of the player whether that is sell on clause, first option or option to match any transfer is the best thing we can do and we seem to be doing that better at the moment.

Also, the lad turned down a contract from us so little you can do about that.

Ports. Perhaps if the players could see a route into the first team they might want to stick around? Sadly, with Ten Haag continuing to start Anthony rather than giving Pelestri or Ahmad a proper crack at RW and bringing in a spurs reject to fill in at left back for four months rather than trusting in our youth academy, it doesn’t surprise me one bit that many of our talented young players are jumping ship.

8.) 02 Feb 2024

Which talented players have moved on due to football reasons and made us regret them leaving?

9.) 02 Feb 2024
02 Feb 2024 12:07:03
Redseven, if he's not playing them, he doesn't think they're good enough. Garnacho is now first choice as is Mainoo it seems, but he isn't giving youngsters a chance eh?

While we'd all like to see more players from the academy make it into the first team, the reality is that there are only so many minutes available for players per season. Meaning youngsters in the first team squad but only playing a handful of minutes won't progress and develop.

At some point there needs to be a decision, will the player make it and become good enough to demand regular minutes in the first team or will they need to move on or risk stagnating their development.

In an ideal world you'd have 1 or 2 players a year step up and start to get regular minutes in the first team, while you might keep another 1 or 2 around to add squad depth in weaker areas of the squad. The rest need to head out on loan (when their ready) to play at a higher level and to develop their game. Then we can assess their performances on loan as to whether they will develop in to a first team player, or whether we need to find them a permanent move so they can continue developing. Maybe we could include a buy back clause of some kind or a sell on fee so as to make sure that if they do suddenly develop into a top player we still have a good chance of bringing them back.

We need to get better at creating pathways for our young players, either with us in the first team or away from the club on loan or permanently.

There are plenty of players who have left the club for free (or nominal amounts) over the past few seasons who could have commanded a pretty decent transfer fee had we gotten them onto senior contracts and allowed them to prove themselves on loan at an EPL or Championship club. Whether any of them would have actually made it at Manchester United is another matter entirely, but given that we are currently shackled by FFP limitations, being able to generate income by selling academy products like most other big clubs do would presumably make a massive difference.

Besides. It only takes one. Just look at Pogba. We ended up spending almost a hundred million to resign him just a few seasons after letting him leave for nothing. His return didn’t go as planned, but he definitely made us regret his first departure during his first few seasons at Juve.

This kind of thing will probably also influence talented young players who are considering whether or not to join our academy. Based on some of Ed002’s comments, it seems as though a lot of our young players end up leaving because we are unable to provide them with a clear roadmap as to how they are going to be developed and how they are (eventually) going to slot into the first team. Why would a player join our academy over City’s or Liverpool’s knowing that they too will probably find themselves in the same situation somewhere further down the road? Of course, our terrible facilities and god awful performances on the pitch probably serve as a pretty strong deterrent as well!

People slate Ten Hag about bringing through youth but he has brought through two in his 1.5 seasons so far, Garnacho now becoming a starring regular and Mainoo is a sensation. On top of this, Kambwala has looked steady when he has played, would be good to see him a few more times before end of the season.

Excited to see Shea Lacey (along with a potential number of others) from the u18s in the next 1-3 years.

Well we’ve got a clear roadmap for them and with the deals we are now doing we will benefit further down the line. The lad has just got a move to the Bundesligue so we are selling players to clubs in other top leagues. He smashes it there and we could potentially sign him back or we get a good sell on fee. Which could be fairly significant or if minimal suggests he isn’t as good as everyone thought.

So your issue is not actually a route into the first team but football decisions on contracts these players are offered from a previous regime. With SJR and hopefully his new personnel he’ll bring in, hopefully this will change. But you’ve seen an opportunity to have a pop at ETH without really thinking about what you are saying.

15.) 02 Feb 2024

It’s an issue that certainly predates Ten Haag, but one that he’s made even worse by constantly picking his favorites no matter how poorly they perform. How Anthony and Onana are still getting minutes (let alone starts) is mind boggling, so it’s easy to see how younger players who play in their positions could become disillusioned with life at the club.

I suppose you could argue that the lack of minutes for younger players is down to poor results, as if we were able to comfortably kill games off by the sixty minute mark we could afford to make changes and give some of the younger players a chance. At this point, though, the season is pretty much over, so I really don’t see what we have to lose by mixing things up a little. It’s hard to imagine the performances getting much worse.

I'm definitely keen to see how Bergvall does, he did have a trial at OT a couple of years ago.
Check out his Wiki page, Club Career has a fantastic footnote.

Redseven

I watched him once in preseason and never thought wow there is a player. How many times have you actually seen this guy play to make that statement about eth. Do you actually rate Pellistri? his loan spell was very poor previously and what has he ever done at united when he has had his chances to make you think there is massive loss.

ORK

thanks will check it out. I like him and i think spurs will look very smart in a few years with this guy and what they paid. I watch quite few of these guys Vermeeren who has just gone somewhere not for me and we were heavily linked to him.

I like Nusa and Nico Williams. Nusa's transfer fell apart in this window and can't recall who but they were willing to fork out 37 mill for him in this market, which has been anemic this jan.

Nico williams for me is the best young right winger/ left winger that has not been gobbled up by a big club. Olise very close but williams has a bit more to his game imo.

Tapsoda is the my fav CB out there if we were going to go for a top one this summer. A rolls royce of a player when it comes to a cb offensively and defensively. I would take him over Anotonio Silva at Benfica who seems to get a lot of hype and headlines. I suspect it would take a massive bid to get leverkusen to sell. If alonso goes to liverpool i expect this guy to follow to fill VVD shoes.

Then again I wanted kudus over Antony and Bellingham instead of sancho:) so we will get none of the above as usual and go for someone else.

Ahmad. That’s kind of the point. He hasn’t played anywhere near enough first team football to ascertain what he’s truly capable of. He’s been given 225 minutes in the league in the eighteen months or so since Ten Haag came in, which averages out to a little over 15 minutes per appearance. How exactly is a player supposed to build up any kind of consistency or run of form under those circumstances? It’s a similar story with players like Diallo and Bayindir (though obviously to a lesser extent given that neither spent last season at the club) .

If we were fighting for the title and all of his preferred 11 were pulling their weight, I’d perhaps understand Ten Haag not rotating, but given his decision to persist with a winger who has provided just one goal and one assist in over 22 hours of football this season (both of which came against League 2 opposition) and a keeper who single-handedly cost us our place in the Champions League knockout stages and god knows how many points in the league, it’s difficult not to feel a little sorry for some of these players.

So we should be giving players opportunities in games, just in case. Pre season might be better for that. Players like Savage and Iqbal had those opportunities last pre season. He could have signed a contract had a pre season and then looked at a move/ loan. Sometime redseven, players need to take responsibility, not blame someone else for not getting what they think they deserve.
