I hate to read too much into recent team selection, but I have this growing feeling that Herrera may be the odd man out against Spurs next week and, while I actually rate LVG, I feel as though this is a tremendous lack of oversight on his part. He may be the most dynamic player in our stable and was the only midfielder capable of scoring the types of goals that we desperately need from this position. Carrick and schweinsteiger should never see the field at once, in my opinion, but a combination of Herrera, Schneiderlain, and one of the aforementioned deep lying passers would be able to compete with anyone.

{Ed004's Note - He also linked up brilliantly with Mata}

Agree WCR. If we're lacking enough at centre back for the Spurs game to have to play Daley Blind out of position then I'd rather MC slotted in at centre back with a midfield 3 of BS, MS and AH. MC is a better stand in centre back than DB and it also answers the MC or BS question.

Well, actually I'd rather we just signed equivalents of Rio and Vidic in their prime because none of our current lot are anyway near that level.

100% sure every united fan agrees with this post

Has LVG said that he will drop Herrera or what midfielders he will choose regularly, i must have missed that presser.

Not certain if the recent disclosure about failed bids for both Reus and Muller feels like a bit of knife-twisting over our supposedly-tarnished allure or a reassuring sidebar that we have, at the very least, made the attempt to drastically improve the roster. Mostly the former, in my opinion, with the latter offering little comfort.

That being said, I think Rojo will be an excellent addition. Athletic, positionally flexible, and a bit of a mean streak. Just a shame that we have let it all come down to the wire again in terms of transfer dealings and, by extension, our prospective fortunes in a critical year for the club.

I really do believe that Woodward has demonstrated nothing short of utter ineptitude in every aspect of his job save for sponsorship deals. This is, and will remain,a sporting venture and it is about time he realizes that all the glad-handing and brown-nosing on earth isn't going to save us at the rate we are falling behind our rivals.

What I hate about this period in our history more than anything are the long term ramifications of short term dealings in an increasingly fickle global market. I mean, who among us would have thought that with merely a single year of substandard results, the club would find itself in a kind of make or break scenario where the hyper globalization of the game could undo decades of glory? I will never see it that way, but this mindset seems mighty pervasive amongst many. Mind-boggling, that.

Having said that - and recognizing it's been a long time since my last post - I cannot help but feel rather vindicated by the adoption of a three man back line after the near-universal dismissal of this tactic by the greater MUFC community some years back. Nothing to gloat about as it has yet to be proven, but I always considered it possible as personnel-based tactic. My only regret is that Patrice Evra couldn't be here to participate. In his pomp, he might have been marvelous in this approach. I still contend that, objectively (I.e. to the neutral), he was one of the most exciting players ever in this modern league as he always tended to keep things interesting on the field, for better or worse.

1.) Nice post Windy.

The world is turning more fickle by the day, everything is short term. If players won't sign for us because we miss out on Europe this season then it is a disgrace, but a likely situation considering the focus of the modern superstar not being focussed on just playing football but also lucrative sponsorship deals and media options etc, there are too many factors now with agents and money grabbing that take a lot of the passion from the game. Obviously there were exceptions in the past that followed this line, but now even half decent players like Konoplyanka can say they won't sign for Man Utd because they want CL football - yet he plays for Dnipro, WTF?

As for the 3 at the back argument. Time will tell as you say, but it seems to be the new flavour of the month, I think Arry Redknapp is even doing it for QPR this season. Next season it could be 4-4-2 again, or 4-5-1. I think Shaw will be very exciting given time and could be even better than Evra who was one of my favourite players.

That argument won't fly, Walter. He was legitimately out-dueled by Ashley Fricking Young. His talent may be in a rarified class, but he's got the heart of a certain rodent that he bears uncanny resemblance to. If he maintained any sense of sporting pride he wouldn't have folded up like a crap tent at the slightest of adversities.

One of the great sporting cowards of recent memory. For a player who many had previously admired for a seemingly relentless attacking instinct, he has demonstated a truly craven professionalism and a the heart of a quitter.
