You have to hand it to David Moyes. He has worked wonders at Everton. He must be a contender to take over from SAF, and rightly so.

GDS.

I live in Scotland so with the round trip, match tickets x 2 usually, night out after and stay over its to expensive with 2 kids, mortgage etc so forgive me for not attending every game like you must do. Every time I am there I do shout my head off although usually at Evra over the last 2 years.

Moon.

The formation I put up was for West Brom only. The system should stay the same only the personnel to differ for my best team.

But I think you may be confused as to me disagreeing with you if you were pointing out how bad we have played previously. I am one of the first to be negative and point out things others maybe don't want to see. That's just me. I would rather point out the 2 things we didn't do right even if we did 6 things right. That's how good players progress.

Anyway I never mentioned you saying anything about tactics or being a one off. I was pointing out that there were no positives to take out the stats. There was only one positive and he was in goal.

My point about the formation is that we are 10 months after a lesson in football from Barca yet after the declaration of change and early season promise we are back to the same sh*te standard that had me and a few others complaining about last year like Blackpool, West Brom etc games. There has been no change.

I cannot agree with the statement we cant change to the 4-3-3 now. Nonsense imo. They are professional players of which I'm certain they could adapt to what is similar to the 4-4-1-1 we have but just the 1 dropping in to make a 3 and the wingers pushing on. I don't believe for 1 second we will change but I'm certain the players would have no problems adjusting.

Yes we were beaten by a better side I can accept that but our performance is what I cant accept. Our tactical downfall that I'm sure anyone watching could see unfolding before we went 1 up and what happened from our bench? nothing at all. Imo that's not good enough for any team wanting to win.

I will concur with you as I too cant stand Evra but I don't narrow it down to just defensively. He is garbage full stop. He must have what? around 10 assists in his Utd career and 1 or 2 goals? hardly good is it. i have never agreed to anyone saying he is good going forward as he is not! Yet that leads to most of his probs as his gallivanting forward with no purpose leads to his zero effort to get back.

Anyhoo you are right. I will have fun living as a pessimist as then you can be happy even when you get it wrong ;-)

sorry it's late but what a complete and utter disgrace of a performance that was on thursday. (how many times we said that?..too many).

i have a lot to moan about here so bare with me/

the first thing that needs mentioning is why is it EVERY game we play the "Lesser teams" seem to have more possession and more clear cut chances.
we seem to be playing counter attack against everyone which is strange cos all the teams we play have better possession and they actually look better on the counter attack than we do when we have a failed attack..

now to the set up, we are playing well too far back, our defense isn't far enough up the pitch, you see all the best teams in europe and they have their defense basically stood on the half way line controlling the game.

-park has lost his work rate.
-giggs is sloppy and doesn't look good at CM.
-hernandez can't link up and has a bad touch and takes way too long to shoot, doesn't look as good as he did last season.
-evra gets caught out of position too many times and is poor defensively.
- jones, the jack of all trades but master of nothing, going to be our next john o'shea if isn't used and developed properly.
-rooney looked poor all game, so too did ashley young.
-rafa looked ok apart from the 3rd goal, too sloppy and lacking awareness.
-evans, de gea, carrick, anderson, smalling all looked ok and didn't make too many mistakes.

we seem to be saying the same thing after every game, win, lose or draw we just look really poor, and we have looked poor for 3 seasons bar a few games.
are the players getting worse or is it the managers and coaches fault? i think a mixture of both, SAF has got a lot of things wrong this season, playing players out of position and using the wrong tactics during games... it's happening too many times and he needs a kick up his back side to wake him up. the players are also lacking something, they can't keep possession, can't create many chances on goal and get over run in midfield by average players.

IMO we need 3/4 new players and a new number 2, which imo should be carlos.

the 3/4 positions we need strengthening are cb, cdm, cm, st...
Those being:

CB banenta/martinez
CDM garcia
CM ozil/modric/goetze
ST RVP/higuian/

also rooney needs to go back to his striking position, people say his best position in in the hole behind the striker but i disagree and think he is best used as a lone striker like in 09/10.

for next season id like to see a team like this

________deGea________
rafa__marti__vidic__evra
_____garcia__cleves____
toniV_____ozil______nani
________rooney________

that leaves us with a player in every position to replace anyone who is injured, and stops us playing players out of position.
lindegaard
jones
evans
smalling
fabio
young
youth promotion.
carrick
anderson
welbeck
hernandez

ozil, martinez and garcia would probably cost 25m each.
so to raise cash and wages id sell:
rio, park, giggs retire, scholes retire, kzuszack, macheda, berbatov. that would probably just raise 20m so if we have 55m to spend on players in the summer we could have a very good team.

sorry for the long post and moaning.

(place in banter please ed, thanks)

no matter what, getting beat at our own den is a bit embarassing(twice now in europa)..i am confident of us getting a result in spain...but we need 2 or 3 class players next season to have a good mix of potentail youth (clevs, wellbeck, rafa, jones, smalling, fabio) and experience...one cf/winger, a mid and a lb is must...
Sahin/martinez,
alhy cissoko
and gaitan/a good leftie winger/striker

With the large profits we have made, and the relatively poor season we have had i think that money will be spent in summer. I, like others on here, think that we will go for an attacking midfielder.

But, if we have money to spend then i think that this is the most likely formation/personel that we would go for. By no means am i saying that we would get them, but this i think is the ideal summer for us.

___________De Gea
Jones__Ferdy___Vidic___Alba
_____Martinez__Cleverly
Valencia___Eriksen____Nani
__________Rooney

I honestly don't think many teams would be better than that other than maybe Barca/Madrid.

Tomorow is going to be a massive one for us, we have to win of course, but the performance needs to be good. If we blow them away then we are back on track, and if not, then i think we could be in a bit of trouble as we are getting stuck in a bit of a rut it seems.

We need reinforcements regardless, someone to give us that spark. Alot of the problems are down to the formation i think, it is becoming a little out dated against teams who play 3 in midfield. 3 in midfield keep the ball better than we do, we saw that with Bilbao.

We already have the squad to play 3 in midfield, but i think generally, quality is lacking some what. I also don't think that we should move to a midfield 3 in every game. If it was my money, i would spend it on a new left back and an attacking midfielder as a matter of urgency. 4-2-3-1 i think should be our 'basic' formation. With the squad we already have we can easily revert to a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3 formation.

The options we are lacking most in is central attacking midfield. If we were to sign him then we can release Rooney more into a striker.

I do not know which attacking midfielder we should go for, options i think are:

Wesley Sneijder
Shinji Kagawa
Mario Gotze
Iker Muniain
Mesut Ozil
Eden Hazard
Nicolas Gaitan

They are the best options that we could go for, and out of all of them i'd like to see Ozil here, but that isn't realistically going to happen as he is an important piece in the Madrid puzzle. My conclusions on who we need have surprised even me. I'm almost advocating another move for Sneijder. He was wanted last summer and a player just doesn't lose his ability. Playing him behind Rooney would be perfect for him.

However, Sneijder wouldn't play every game and i'm not sure how disruptive he would be if he wasn't a regular starter - he has also said that he hates playing central midfield in a deeper role.

If you were to go for an attacking midfielder who would it be?

UnitedForever {Ed004's Note - Gotze or Eriksen but I would keep Rooney CF and play sissoko and martinez dm's as both can pass, tackle and get forward.}

Moon come on man.

All the stats show:

they had more possesion almost 60-40,

19 shots to our 9, 11 on target to our 5,

86.7% of 592 passes compared to our 84.6% of 422,

All this while we were at home. Not that you could tell as their 7000 fans were making more noise even when we were 1-0 up.

Add to that our dated 4-4-2 does NOT work against any formation which has 3 in CM and I cannot understand how they continualy think it will. All teams play with pressure against our CMs now as they know they will crumble. Any body with half a brain knows that 3 v 2 only ends in one result. Bilbao regularly play this way yet it was either not picked up on or we chose not to bother about it.

Either way that stinks of tactical ineptness full stop. All the european teams have come to our ground and played the exact same way with the same results. Over running the midfield.

I cannot fathom why after we get trounced twice by Barca and SAF stating we need to change and all the rest we are still sticking with this outdated formation and tactics. It beggers belief.

Yes Bilbao played well but they came to play that way. They knew how to hurt us and we had absolutely no answer. The fact a 3-2 defeat is a blessing at home is a disgrace. I cannot accept that. An off game? haha how many off games do we need to be proven in the fact our team is not up to standard. we can put as much positive spin on it as we want but we are shockingly further behind than the league suggests.

SAF is churning results out even with sh*te performances regularly and hats off to him but when he goes if the next guy cant motivate like he can (which he probably cant) then we are totally fu**ed.

Also Park on the wing against Bilbao? Jesus christ! That tactic never works. all it does is lop side our own play so doesnt help us in any way.

Piss poor again, like most of the season and I stand by my comment of if we win the league, SAF to go. At least then the backroom staff will hopefully get a much needed shake up.

By the way West Brom are on form so lets see if any tactical plan can be put in place to beat them.

I would do this.

----------De Gea-
Rafa---Rio---Evans---Evra-
-----Carrick--Scholes-
Nani----Clev/Ando---Young-
---------Rooney-

But no doubt wont see that.

Morning guys,

Erm, I've stayed away since thursday to avoid saying something that I was going to regret and after I've calmed down a bit my outlook is a little different.

Yes, we shouldn't be losing at home and we shouldn't be losing to Bilbao. HOWEVER what we all seem to be ignoring is that Bilbao played us off the park, not because we're terrible but because they were flawless. That game and the fluidity of the passing from Bilbao reminded me of the Final in Rome, they were that good.

There are various reasons for why we lost on thursday night, not excuses, reasons;

- we had 6 players under 23 with only De Gea and Evans having real experience in europe.

- Pairing Jones and Giggs in CM wasn't going to produce a passing masterclass but I believe it was done for Jones to pressure and Giggs to have a bit of passing ability while being able to use his experience to work with Jones.

- Park, well I assume again, that we played him to close down Bilbao, again it didn't work.

- Lastly, they were superb.

A lot of people are also asking why Hernandez was dropping out wide and deep a lot, well, I haven't got a clue what he was doing, wasted his best attributes by a mile and the fact that he didn't get caught offside once when normally he gets caught offside 3, 4, 5 times a game says it all.

Now, we can take some positives from this game...

- All 19 tackles that we made were successful, for a midfield of Young, Jones, Giggs and Park all of whom aren't the most gifted technically yet he came away with an overall passing accuracy of 84.6% in comparison to Bilbao who came away with 86.7%.

So, no we didn't play well and no we didn't deserve to win, but it's not all doom and gloom, we did do somethings right and we gave our lads some much needed European experience.

Let's rally behind our team, we know we've been terrible at home in Europe this year but these things happen, it won't last forever and next year we would have forgotten all about it just like we forgot about our horrible league away form last year.

Have a good weekend guys.

The Moon.

We will not lose anybody to Manchester City, or to anybody else because we want to keep our players," stated Wenger.

"I can only let people talk. We want to keep Robin Van Persie, that is clear, we will do everything possible to extend his contract, that is clear.

"I was very adamant but at the end of the day, it (Nasri) was a difficult situation to manage," he continued. "We had the players and we felt that [Aaron] Ramsey and [Jack] Wilshere could work.

"Would we keep Robin even if he doesn't extend? Yes, of course. Our plan is just to keep Robin van Persie, even if we buy any player."

I agree with Tk, Red Man and Syd, we have a strong squad, but missing two class players in two key positions Midfield and striker. A 55-60 mil shopping spree in the summer on a lb, striker and midfield, sell Berbatov, PIG, Park and we would be complete. Then its about letting the squad gel and knowing each others runs.

Alot of people on here are saying let's buy Iker Muniain, I disagree, although he's a great talent for me Llorente looks the better option to suit our team, he'd b a great number 9. He holds it up well, scores bags of goals n is great at getting on the end of crosses, imagine him linking up with Valencia? It would work a treat. In my opinion were missing a player like him up top. I kno it's unrealistic because of prices and funds etc but if we got Llorente, A lb and then Modric or Ozil we would b a dominant team again. I'm gonna use izaguirre as an example cos to me there's not many lb's I can think of. If we could get them players my line up wud be;

De Gea

Rafael/Jones
Smalling
Vidic
Izaguirre

Cleverley
Modric/Ozil

Valencia
Rooney
Nani/Young

Llorente

(played in a 4-2-3-1 formation)

I for one feel confident this weekend, we will win 2-0. I also think City will struggle at swansea, if it is true that Kompany is out, after a bad result in europe Swansea really could cut them open if they go straight for the jugular like with Arsenal. Come Monday we'll be back on our perch. I also hope De Gea gets some media praise for Thursday nights performance.
