I will post this up and I want alot of responses, I think man u have been very lucky this season and I will give a few points at the top of my head going in their favour:

west brom - late own goal winner
arsenal - van persie missed pen (I know they got hammered)
chelsea - torres (miss of decade) ramirez sitter, 2
goals were offside
liverpool - dea gea saved you, lucky to get point
everton - baines hit underside of bar
sunderland - linesman gives pen, ref overrules (rare)
swansea - open goal missed
basel - 3-3 (shocking game)
benfica - 2-2 at home not good enough
stoke - lucky to get a draw
norwich - missed sitter at 0-0

I can go further and say when you played tottenham they had parker, adebayor, king, modric at least missing

What I am trying to say is they have had more than their fair share of luck and that city game along with others in the future (not as bad a hammering) will happen again

People claiming cleverly to be the next big thing (dont see that), had a few decent games thats all

Will await replies

No lucky and no quality enough to overtake Benfica! We're not doing well in the CL even playing one of the easiest groups,

I hope Carrick is back for sure! It does not matter if is only the a game or not but is this kind of attitude we must avoid in order to scare the teams that come here.

I hope we shopping in January

i thought we played ok tonight nani and carrick did well berb gave us something different fabio done well and ferd and evra played better than they have been, but looking at the bigger picture how far behind real and barce are we .
i honestly think years unless we spend big.
i know a lot a people will say give the kids a chance and they are right but pogba morrison etc are years away from competing with xavi inesta ozil etc we need players now and we need real quality.
the foundation is there but we are in my opinion 2 worldclass players short.
1 as everyone knows in midefield an ozil modric sneijder type to me would make a massive difference to how we play.
2 a strong worldclass striker owen is on the way out berb is not getting any younger welbeck and i know everyone will kick off but im not sure he will make it to the very top.
i think he will be a good player but villa higuain rooney standard im not sure.
chico is a great player but im not sure he can lead the line i think rooney playing behind the likes of higuain or cavani would scare teams.
now i know all this sounds like fantasy football but thats the standard madrid and barce are setting look at madrid ozil higuain benzama ronaldo
barce xavi messi inesta to name but a few.

@Shappy, you say we should sell Nani because you say he is inconsistant I'm interested to hear who you think we should replace him with that is consistant?
Should we also sell Rooney,Valencia,Young etc because they are also inconsistant?

RedReg

____________________________________________

I think you misunderstood me. I want to keep him but was discussing the idea of selling him IF the price was right and IF the money was used to improve the team. I feel we'd do better playing a 433 formation with wide forward players instead of wingers, which is a subject antother poster has highlighted today.
Personally i'd keep Nani and sign someone who could play as a wide forward like Hulk then play with a front three of Welbeck Rooney and Hulk but still have the option of playing 442 or 4411 with Nani and Young out wide. I hope that clears things up.

If we can't beat Benfica home and away, and we can't beat Basel at home, and our only wins are against a team whos name I can't remember, we arn't good enough. We are a long, long way from the quality of the top teams in Europe. It is honestly as simple as that!

Tbh,we couldn't have asked for a better group than this, its really disappointing the way things have turned out to be.it has been waiting to happen.
Fergie really need strenghten the squad during january, because we might end second in the group and would face a top team like madrid or barca,so january strenghting is a most because tbh this squad is really not strong enough to win champions league.
Our failure to buy a cm is really costing us,witsel was outstanding today, thought fergie was intrested in him?
So a striker and a midfielder is a must in january
if we are aiming in winning the champions league, modric and mvilla should be brought in during january

Right first things first, i love seeing the scousers on our site on tuesday/wednesday nights cus then i know that they sat and watched 90 minutes of a Manchester United game just so they could see some european football, it reminds me of just how far they have fallen. lol

Now on to more pressing matters. I thought on the whole we played much better than of late. We were abit unlucky with the goals conceided but thats the way it goes sometimes. I think this might be easier if i just go through each player.

De Gea- played well for the most part, i won't knock him for his poor clearance as many much more experianced goalkeepers have made that mistake he was just unlucky in that it cost us a goal.

Fabio- Was very good down the right hand side, he got forward well and delt with everything that was thrown at him. I'd like to see him get more games but perhaps on the left.

Jones- was very unlucky with the own goal, but apart from that he was good. Maybe not his best performance though.

Ferdinand- Solid enough but should have moved towards Aimar sooner on their second goal.

Evra- Much improved Defending i thought but still caught out of position too much and needs to look up more when he does move forward as he tends to run down blind alleys with his head down.

Valencia- still not back to his best and seems to be abit scared of the tackle.

Fletcher- well taken goal and good covering of the defence when players(Evra, Jones) were caught up field.

Carrick- Hallelujah he seems to be getting his swagger back and was knocking passes around for fun. On this form I'm looking forward to seeing him and Cleverley paired together after christmas.

Nani- Had one of his good games, was still abit wasteful at times though but you have to except that with a talent like Nani. I think being made to play on the left may have made him think more about what he was doing.

Young- Had a hit and miss night, done some good link up play but his final ball wasn't good enough. But he is just back from injury so i'll give him the benifit of the doubt.

Berbatov- showed his quality with some good touches and a well taken header. The goal seemed to relax him although once Hernandez was on i thought he dropped to deep.

I won't go through the subs but it was good to see Smalling in a red shirt again.

Unfortunately this result means we'll proberly finish second but as i say you have to beat everyone if your to win it. Plus the only way to beat Barca is over two legs.

Was anyone really surprised? That first goal summed up the defence this year without Vidic - but we'll have to get used to a defence without him because he's off to Real Madrid in the summer isn't he? Because SAF's sick of him, right? Because £20m for United's best defender makes 'financial sense'? Right? Hmmmm..

Benfica were far from great tonight. They were on the ropes for most of the game and managed to sneak a draw through two errors from United. Simple as that. Carrick was super, he's not played like that in years. 2nd place at best now.

If we finish on the same number of points as Benfica, they automatically finish above us mate as they have a better head to head than us. They have scored two away goals to our one. We are likely to finish second if we can draw or win because they will 100% beat Otemol at home.

Best player for United, Carrick. I suppose this makes him, one of the best CM's on the planet?

romour has it that De Gea does not have what we need for this season.. and Im the one who started the romour!
he just cost us 2 points against benfica.. im sorry to keep the talk going but WHY does he get those kind of games when we have a far better goal keeper on the side.. im not saynig he wont get there in 1 - 2 -4 years but why put the whole season in the bin because of him?! when we could have Lindegaard there and would not have to worry about it .. unnecessary

Thought we looked slightly more creative with Young playing just behind Berba and Nani looked lively all night. A bit disappointed in Valencia, he just seems to be lacking confidence. Our defence looks a shambles tbh without Vidic, I think Jones need a period out of the team. He's played a lot football recently for both club and country and it's starting to show. All in all, didn't think we played too bad. We have played far worse this season and won. Oh well, onwards and upwards, bring on Basle!

P.S. You have to play the bigger teams at some stage of the competition, so let's just make it through to the next round!

We only need a point in Basle to qualify, but 2nd place is a certainty now and you know it will be Barcelona that we draw. I thought we were slightly unlucky with the goals conceded tonight. The ball deflects off Evra just before Jones scores the Own goal, then I think it was Aimar who pelts it at Ferdinand and it dropped for the scorer. Berbatov has a great chance to win it and he fluffs it :(

City losing kind of eases the pain slightly.

I could really go on about this all night and have defended united for a long time now, but I'm sorry we can't defend to save our lives, I was worried every time they got the ball.
We will find it difficult to qualify from this group, can anybody see us keeping a clean sheet against a team who scored three at OT, if we don't qualify it is a disgrace.
If we do qualify, we will finish second with the thought of Bayern, Real or Barca in the next round, early exit this year.
Very poor.

All you pessimistic fans really need to take another look at tonights game. I cannot fault one player. Everybody played to their standard. Those who are calling for Nani out, stick that in your pipe! He played brilliant tonight. Gotta hand it to Carrick though, really pulled his socks up. MOTM for me. Difficult game, against a strong side. And all you guys can do is feckin moan?

We are starting to play with more confidence, and personally i think berba has been a breath of fresh air. I know, i sound delirious. But he worked hard, held the ball well and played some nice passes.

Oh and City lost! They have to beat Bayern and hope Napoli lose. ;) Looks like a no-brainer to me. Result = City wont qualify.

well we now need the win in Basle just to come second........
so much for being content with this mid-field fergie
that will mean no game time for pogba or morrison (unless it finally sinks into fergies head that this present mid-field is s**t.....

Hell on a positive note if we do manage to get the result and finish second then at least we will get a good look at barca or madrid or bayern very soon......

AND if we do not promote P&M or buy in Jan then we will get a good spanking over 2 legs by the above 3 teams.....

On the other hand,..we had a fair game,..shud have scored atleast 2 more.
But looking at out injury list,...and our recent form,..we played some good football.
Carrick,fletcher,Fabio,Evra were awesome today.
Berbatov pulled one goal but shud have scored the second as well..

Ok,..i can take one point from the game and look forward to Basel.

Even though the result didn't go where we wanted due to some poor defending (the first not being Jones fault but Evras for letting the ball through his legs) I thought that our attacking performance was much better than it has been over the past few weeks. We showed much better pace and I thought we deserved the win today but unfortunately it didn't come.

decent half, didn't play well until the goal. we are missing that person in midfield who makes thing happen, i still think modric would be the perfect signing.

i think we only need 3 new faces and we will be fine, maybe a striker aswell if berba leaves.. so:

lb - alba
cdm - martinez
cm - modric

st(?) - higuain/RVP/benzema/torres(if he is cheap, people will disagree but the guy is class when playing with confidence and if chelsea decide to get rid of him he could go for 25-30m due to his form)

Disappointed that there's no Morrison, but he has traveled with the squad so that's something, drawing against Basle messed up any chance of seeing Pogba or Morrison in tonight's game. Hopefully we can win tonight with Basle dropping points we could play Morrison or Pogba from the start in Switzerland.

Gibson has had his chance, he should not be in any squad of ours, but we are so weak in the middle at the moment even SAF has made that obvious with playing Rooney there and rushing Cleverley back from injury. With SAF showing no faith in our midfield I guess we can safely say that we will be signing a midfielder in January, just hope it's not a panic buy.

Would be nice to jones in holding role and Anderson told to concentrate on attack so he doesn't get confused lol.

In all seriuosness Anderson is an AM not a CM or DM u dnt see schneijer defending. Andersons first season he was awesome but he hasn't even got bck to that level and that was a few seasons ago which is worrying.

Be nioce to give Morrison 15 -20 mins but 10 mins is more likely depending on score and if hes selected.
Lets be honest here he lacks experience but is probably in better form than a few of our 1st chioce midfielders.

Be nice he he played as a AM as he is fantastic at dribbling beating his man and can use both feet, although i can see him on the wing if he does come on.

lfc -

It's not a case of 'how the mighty have fallen'.

You come on here week after week saying how we're deluded and we're not the side we're used to be, well as soon as a lot of people start to recognize that all of a sudden we're h*cked.

I am worried about tonight, no doubt about that, we're playing a side that hasn't lost all season, who look very impressive going forward and very strong at the back whereas it appears that we're without a few of our important players in Cleverley, Welbeck, Vidic and even the mighty Anderson not to mention Rooney might not be included in the team because he's picked up a knock.

so can we actually win with you? I like your posts and you do make this place interesting, but seriously if we think we're amazing we're deluded if we admit we're a little worried and we're not that strong then we're in decline and the might have fallen. make your mind up! ;). haha.

p.s - I can't believe i'm about to say this but well done at the weekend! quite the entertaining match I must say.

Hi Guys
I'm not proud of myself for saying this but I think we will struggle tonight. If as I am expecting Johnny Evans starts tonight I think Benfica will target him.Benfica are in excellent form so far and will come to play. They have 1 or 2 players that will want to impress us as they have been linked with us especially Gaitan. If he's fit I can see Rooney playing in midfield again which IMO is a total waste and just highlights how poor we are in that area.Still I live in hope and I would be more than happy if the lads prove me wrong.

I posted earlier regarding Marcel Schmelzer the young LB from Dortmund. Another player who would be good for United is Sven Bender. He is 22 years old and is a no nonsense precise and hard tackling defensive midfielder.
He was referred to as the Beast to Nuri Sahin's beauty. If Dortmund lost the ball in attack they were at it again after a few seconds cause of this guy. Eclipsed by the rise of Vidal but better than him in my opinion. Made more than 400 tackles and got only 2 yellow cards. Truly amazing boy. Picked up an international cap for Germany also. Has a twin brother by the name of Lars Bender also a mid.
People here ask for the new Roy Keane. May turn out to be better than him.

I dont think you people watch Bundesliga but I'm a big fan. So to just let you all know that there is a LB by the name Marcel Schmelzer in Borussia Dortmund.
Only 23 years of age and last season he missed only 4 minutes of game time for the team. Great in going forward with lethal crosses and fast enough to get back in defence. Been capped for the German team. Would be very difficult to part from Dortmund but if successful he take over the BPL like a storm.

The Sun states that Morrisson could be in line for some playing time this evening... hope so.

As a new poster, I have to ask why when talking about signing players such as Goetze are we as fans/pundits obsessed with signing them in the summer and not January just because he's cup-tied?? I'll take a signing of that quality anytime. His long term value as a 19-year old doesn't drop just because he can't play Champ League for us this year!

With regards to getting in the way of our younger talent... nonsense. Its a squad/rotation game now. There's plenty of room in the squad for players of his undisputed quality at such a young age. So, FFS, forget what time of year it is and make a bid in January SAF.

Here's a new name to toss around as a potential midfield signing:

Kevin-Prince Boateng, He has that dark edge about him that we haven't had in midfield since Keane left. He's good going forward plays with his head up and great in the tackle. Is only 24 has prem experiance and has recently retired fron international football so wouldn't be tired out or potentially injured from playing international football. He has all the attributes we need in a midfield partner for Cleverley and wouldn't stop the youngster from coming through.
The only downside is i have no idea what AC milan would sell him for. But i think Milan would be open to the idea of selling him as it would open up a non EU spot in their squad that they are so desprate for so they can sign Ganso.

Let me know what you think of him.

Now this is alittle off subject but i think it's something we should consider when signing players.
Everyone goes on about the great players spain have and that they have great youth players comming through but i think lots of people have missed a trick with Germany, they have so many good players coming through and in the national team at the moment, the likes of:
Neuer, Adler, Lahm, Howedes, Hummels, Badstuber, Boateng, Aogo, Schwiensteiger, Khedira, Ozil, Gotze, Kroos, Bender, Marin, Reus, Draxler, Muller, Podolski, Schurrle and Gomez

a first team of:

____________Neuer____________
Lahm_Hummels_Howedes_Badstuber
__Schweinsteiger_Khedira_Ozil__
__Muller_____Gomez___Podolski__

With a bench of: Adler, Boateng, Gotze, Kroos, Bender, Marin, Schurrle

My point is i think we should be looking at young german players as they are likely to settle better here than spainish youngsters and are just as talented but seem to have that edge about them.

Having written this i think i'm gonna have a punt on them to win the euro's

Not so much a rumour but a question for the Eds or Syd.

A few people have mentioned Pogba and Morrison as promising players to come up from the youth team, but how are the likes of Petrucci and Tunnicliffe coming along?

Do these young players have enough ability to step up to the first team either this or next year and are we likely to see them sooner rather than later?

Any info on this would be appreciated

I really have to laugh with some people posting about who should replace fergie,it really makes me laugh,it's only a few weeks ago that he said he ll keep goin once he's healthy, and he said he's pretty healthy, and even though it could be 3,4,5 years and more till he goes people still ask who should replace him it's like sayin who should replace Rooney when he retires concentrate on the present!

One thing people need to understand is that selling Nani wont help your team. The only better or comparable wingers at this time are Ronaldo, Alexis and Hazard and believe me guys you cant get any of them. It would be a step backwards to sell him and bring in some inexperienced player in his position.
It is not only strikers who benefit from killer passes by CMs but also the wingers. Since Cleverly's injury no one provides those to either the strikers or the wingers.
Moreover the chemistry between Nani and Hernandez is pathetic. He is there when Nani crosses the ball but in case Nani cuts in and wants to do a one two or gives a through ball Hernandez is always left blank. They should sort this out in training. I've seen on numerous occasions now that such chances have been wasted.
One other thing you guys say Evra is good in going forward but lacks in defence, but is the benefit of going forward if he cant even cross the ball. Seriously I havnt seen a single incident in this season where his cross has landed in the box let alone near the strikers. His crosses hit the defenders and go out of play.

Just found this on , we all believe Nani is inconsistent but what does Fergie think:

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is pleased with Nani’s development and says that he has now "grown into the club".

The Portuguese winger struggled to hold down a regular first-team place when he first arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon back in 2007 where he was kept in the shadows by the performances of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Since Ronaldo moved on to Real Madrid, however, Nani has become one of the Red Devils' most consistent players and Ferguson had nothing but praise for the Portugal star.

He told reporters: "I think he’s always had that potential. Everyone coming to a club from abroad, some can do it quickly but others gradually grow into the club and I think Nani’s one of those.

"I think even Cristiano [Ronaldo] took two or three years to get a maturity in his game and that’s what we’re seeing with Nani now."

Ferguson also remarked how valuable the former Sporting Lisbon man’s creativity is to the team, adding: "You see his stats for assists, goals have been fine but his assists are very, very high so he’s progressing really well."

In light of Jorge Jesus' claims that Spain's, Germany's and even Italy's (?) leagues are better than the PL, What does everyone else think? I don't think there is another league where perhaps 6 teams could all win the League? Germany has been dominated by Bayern Munich over the last decade, while Spain is a terrible league apart from the two exceptional sides. And Italy, well, every team is sh!t, therefore making it a truly awful and dreadfully boring league. In what other league can you play a newly-promoted team and genuinely not be sure of the outcome? Plus, we think diving is bad in this country, it is SO much worse in Spain, Italy and Germany! In addition, I find the fast-paced action incredibly addictive, and I for one love watching any match in the PL, even the Wigan's and the Bolton's, whereas, apart from 'El Clasico', I find even Real's and Barca's game a bit tedious and boring, let alone the likes of Racing Santander and Real Sociedad!

PL FTW!

Where some people get their figures for how much they think we can acquire certain players I will never know.

Read someone say that both Rodwell and Gotze would cost £25m each, and I'm sure I read someone else say that Martinez would be under £20mil?

You're all mad.
