Although it looks like we won't be signing anyone else we can still enjoy the demise of that mob from Anfield. After watching their match tonight I can happily confirm that they are a Suarez injury away from Championship football. Agent Rodgers is certainly earning his pay.

Don't agree. Yes, Chelsea and City are our closest rivals in terms of trophies but they are new money. The biggest match of the season for me in terms of history, tradition and rivalry was, is and always will be our games against Liverpool.

I agree mate, but those games only come around 2-4 times a season. We are competing with City and Chelsea for 38+ games a season.

You have to laugh at some of the transfer fees in this window. Compare Berbatov (£3-£5 million) and Rhodes (£8 million) just shows how ridiculous it has got.

So Fergie said a while back that there would be one more signing if he became available, I can't believe that player was Buttner so surely there's a late twist with one more player coming in. Henriquez has not been unveiled as yet but was at the reserve game last night, maybe just maybe he will be unveiled tomorrow with that one other signing, what do you fellow red devil supporters and Eds think of this?? {Ed007's Note - I am hopeful of one more signing to be made.}

what amazes me is how you can have two fantastic players in there heyday scholes and giggs.Playing for you from the youth setup, and not replacing them with like for like quality, having over 20 years to look for the right players to bring in as they both entered the twilight of there great careers.I think SAF has lost sight of what is really needed.Dembele ran our midfield ragged on saturday, what will city, chelsea etc do to us?
i feel this could be a very poor season for us.....maybe if it is SAF will try and bring in the right players next season at last!
Believable3
Unbelievable3
Not sure why people keep harping on about Dembele, sure he had a good game against us but a lot of players when they are linked with us tend to do well. He didn't score too many goals last season and his assists weren't that high either.
Agree1
Disagree1
"like for like" replacements? How many players especially British can you name with the talent and work ethic of these two in the last 20 years in there respective positions?
As winger wise I certainly cant think of a single name that comes anywhere near close. The only decent one since has been Bale and he chose Spurs for first team football.
And central midfield wise, again a totally different player but the only one I can think off is Steven Gerrard and he obviously would never play for us.
You mention these two players who you rightly say we have had over 20 years, and then you mention Dembele? A good player but pfffft come on

Don't know myself to be honest.
Man City are a great team to watch, but I hate how they've gotten to where they are today. Man City's fans are, for the most part, very arrogant, and think they are superior compared to every other team.
I don't like Liverpool mainly due to the fans, no offence. Alot of them are okay, but alot of them really annoy me the way they bang on about how great they where in the past, plus the way that they all started kissing up to Man City when they won the league last year.

They are too egotistic and Ignorant to admit that they Bought/Won the league through wealth, silly wages and the audacity to attempt to buy every possible transfer target and succeed even though most players will warm the bench
On another note I do hate Liverpool, but have learned to tolerate them all bar one

So, transfer window draws to a close. Many observers have been using it as a yardstick for the potential retirement of SAF. Short term buys suggest imminent (RVP & Kagawa). Longer term buys suggest 2-3 years (Buttner, Powell & Henriquez.)
So we're none the wiser.
When RVP was announced excitement levels peaked. Sadly the lack of a proven box to box has dampened the fever.
So, one of our most difficult seasons to predict for a variety of reasons. Is it SAFs last? Who, if anybody, will emerge to become our next midfield maestro? Can we realistically compete with City and Chelsea?
I hope so, with all my heart, but remain
unconvinced. Maybe, the transition awaits younger blood to mature under one Jose Mourinhio? Love him or hate him, it is an interesting prospect?

City have not being playin wel. Chelsea had a good start give it time an injurys will ravage the team . Arsenal have two problems they can't keep players an they can't score goals . Spurs the first few games they don't look good in fact I'm more worried playin Newcastle who do look impressive . Which brings me to us two games in beaten once by a rampant everton side yes fellaini was amazin but that was a team effort an we lost 1-0 then Fulham which we one we played very wel some new faces got some goals an boosted confidence. Dembele played a stormer for all of a half hour and one of the goals was a joke the score did not tell the whole story we could of scored alot more . We lost Rooney big blow but in a month or so he should be fresh an the same wit Smalling , jones . Butner looks good he will fill the hole that evra seam to oblivious which means we won't leak goals hope fully . Clev an kag will be fine they need more game time fletch should come in a some stage and RVP wil do Wat RVP does then rafeal nani young Toni carrick Hernandez welbeck . Am I the only one who thinks we will be fine . Look at these options I haven't even mentioned the rest of them .serious we will be fine ....

Cain - city not playing well and they have more points than us, that's what we used to do. Playing either merseyside team away is hard, they gotta point out of their game. Soton and Fulham at home are comparable, we both struggled to win so no different.
I would say neither of us playing well and Chelsea have started best. Unfortunately city have done what champions do, not play well and pick up points.
Here's looking forward to an interesting season ahead and hopefully a successful one.

MY PERSONAL OPINION...
I'd prefer to have a tougher group. Big games increase confidence.
Last year we had an easy one and couldn't materialize good games. But I can't lie that this is a very good group to show and come on top.
I just hope SAF don't underestimate the other teams.
Nick86
Believable2

Yes there is a danger the group is 'too easy' but given we were humiliated in Europe last year I'm not expecting deja vu with underestimating the opposition.
Bottom line is City may struggle to qualify from their group which will give hard games and impact on league form. I appreciate you can get a buzz from a long run of big games as we did in 99 however more likely such a good run will continue if it happens in the second half of the season.
Question: would you really swap our group for City's ??

Iniesta was good, but how you can look past Ronaldo last year is unbelievable. He scored 50+ goals, RM won La Liga and he dragged his country almost single-handedly through to the later stages of the Euros. Iniesta was good last year, and always has been a very good player. But IMO, he didn't have anywhere near the season Ronaldo had, or even RVP for that matter. Uefalona strikes again IMO.

I think its about time iniesta won it,for me he's been the best in the world for the last 3-4 years.Forget how many goals messi and ronaldo score its all about a team game an iniesta starts 99% of his teams attacking move..

The problem here is that imo uefa realised that iniesta deserved it last year and that has impacted on the decision this year. ronaldo had an unbelievable year and deserved to win i think, iniesta should have won last year but giving him the award this year is again imo the wrong thing to do.
hopefully though ronaldo will win the fifa ballon d'or he deserves.

I think we need a box to box midfielder for the bigger games , tunnicliffe is not ready for that yet

I am not quite sure, I rate Tunnicliffe very high. The boy was one 3 super Midfield trio. Obviously Morrison never got any contract offer from Man utd(thats fact) and we all the Pogba just want some assurance he will get more game time ahead of Giggs(terrible in midfield). We all know we needed midfield cover and thats why Scholes was back, but how did Juventus, who has Pirlo, Isla, Asamoah, Vidal, Marchisio and 3 more midfielder manage to convince Pogba that he will get more game time, when Man utd has potentially more games.
So anyway going back to Tunnicliffe, i think he needs to improve his short passes and be more dominating within the team by improving his positioning. The boy is ready, its upto him if he takes chance.
Red Samurai

I'm by far the biggest Tunners fan on here but I don't think he's ready to play every week, I'm sure next season he'll push but he's still a young lad, throwing him in against Tiote, Cabaye, Barton, Yaya, Cattermole. etc. will ruin him.
Great potential but making him play so much at a young age will make him burn out at a young age like Walcott, owen, etc.

your only defender of 'quality' is Kompany who still isn't on the Vidic level.

Chelsea & City have looked very strong so far. It appears that Tottenham and Arsenal are investing in their squads and after a short period where the players will develop a cohesive bond, those squads should be strong in the EPL.
Yes, United brought in RVP, Powell, Kagawa, Buttner, Henriquez, but are all of those players ready for the EPL?
I would say Kagawa & RVP are ready to dominate, but the others are not. Likewise, United has young talent that soon can be dominating players. But, and that is very important to state, those young players are at least a year away from being ready for the EPL.
Sorry to say, but Anderson and Cleverley are not going to dominant the midfield. Scholes cannot play more than 50 minutes each game at a high level. United cannot wait and hope Fletcher returns to save the day. It will not happen!
Sorry to be so honest, but I question why United does not invest in the midfield and defense.
Regarding the defense, does anyone realize that Ferdinand is in the twilight of his career? He is injury-prone and has lost the once brilliant pace that he once shone.
Please, United, an investment in the squad is needed.

I wish people would hush up about our defence we have no problem with it ! Smalling is already capable to replace Ferdinand and is only going to improve and Pgil Jones is capable to play there aswell as Evans our defence is great the only sub par is Evra and he isnt exactly stephen warnock ability.

Responding to the statement "I wish people would hush up about our defense......". If I recall, didn't United have a 10 point lead over City with four matches remaining last year. I hope my information is not incorrect, but how did United lose the title with such a large lead in the table. Also, didn't United's defense crumble during the last match of the year against Everton, which ultimately cost United the title. Please advise if I mistated the facts.

Alex Ferguson said that their business was done and there would be no more signings. Can't understand why everyone can't except this?
As for buying a midfielder in January.....forget it. Ferguson never buys in January. Last season we didn't have Fletcher, Cleverley, Anderson...did he go out and buy a player....no he resigned Scholes. He is so impressed by Scholes that he gave him an extra year contract.
He has Scholes, Cleverley, Anderson and maybe a returning Fletcher. Unless we lose 2 or 3 of them to injury....don't expect a midfield signing.
I agree with the majority of fans, that our central midfield is probable one of the weakest in the Premier League and lets not even mention Europe.....but Ferguson doesn't.
We are fans and armchair managers.....he isn't....and there isn't anything we can do or say to convince United to see what we see.

The reason that me and a few others still believe we haven't finished in the transfer window is that Sir Alex said "no more in's and no more out's" Berbatov is as i type having a medical at Fulham, so that clears a place for one more in.

Alot of people have moaned about our midfield and even said things like we'll struggle to finish in the top four with this midfield. What a load of rubbish, this midfield finished equal on points with the team that finished top of the league. I know our play wasn't that convincing at times but they still got there by hook or by crook. This season we'll hopefully have Cleverley and maybe even Anderson fit for the season. So that should make us abit stronger. Then we have Vidic back in defence and proper competition for Evra so we are stronger in defence. Then up front we have the RVP the leagues top scorer signed and Kagawa who'll add goals from midfield and some more creativity. So why should our team be worst than last year. If Cleverley and Anderson can stay fit and prove their worth along with a more solid defence and more expansive attack then we should have a good chance on all fronts.

We never played great football last year the standard of the league was poor last year although entertaining imo.
I would say city , arsenal chelsea and united were all at various stages of transition.
in europe we were very average no where near the level of the top teams I would'nt put us in the top 5 teams in europe last year and thats being kind.
although chelsea proved a bit of luck can go a long way.
uniteds aim should be to be the number 1 in europe but to best honest i dont think we are there at the moment.

The concern over our midfield, and to be blunt, Anderson and Nani in particular, is they dont look upto it.
However, our first choice attacking trio of Kagawa supporting Rooney and RVP is mouthwatering.
Our midfield may not be stellar but I'm expecting an improved showing from Cleverly if he stays fit.
Vidic coming back is like a new signing. Vidic alone would have stopped the 1 or 2 key goals that effectively lost us the title last season and as you point out we lost on goal difference. Goal difference that can be put down to one fluke game in the 6-1 defeat to Citeh.
City will have to play as Champions for the first time though I expect them to be there or thereabouts. Chelsea are an obvious threat if all their new signings gel which in fairness they look to be based on first 3 games however its a long season as all know.
Yes we are not perfect but over a 38 game season I believe we will finish on top.

Young, when playing well, has good link up play.. Hence being played in a no. 10 role for England. His decision making is better than Nani, and although predictable, he usually delivers a decent cross that the strikers can also predict, and therefore make a run for.
He can't reach the heights of Nani in top form tho.

I watched the Clasico yesterday and couldn't help but think that we would be beatem Madrid and Barcelona - but if we fixed the area that is most at need then we would do just fine! The midfield pairing for Madrid - Alonso and Khedira are much more combatative than our pair. Khedira in particular impressed for me as he is meant to shield the defence, however he also drives forward with the ball and passes forward - something which Carrick could do more of I think. Out of our squad, I feel that Rafael, Vidic, Valencia, Kagawa, Rooney and RVP could make it into the Madrid squad and also the Barca squad, but generally they have the superior squads. Having said that, we are just one player away from matching them - with RVP, Valencia, Kagawa, Rooney etc we could match them goal for goal I feel but the midfield would be bossed. Maybe SAF feels that Fletcher will be back soon to sort that out, or Herrera will do the job. Still hoping for Witsel.
If it was up to me, I'd sign 2 to 3 more players if we had the money. Firstly I'd sign Axel Witsel, not to replace Anderson, just to give us another option. But I would sign Muiain to probably replace Nani as we would need to sell him to finance him. My perfect line up would be:
___________DDG
Rafa___Vidic___Ferdy___Evra
_____Cleverly__Witsel
Rooney___Kagawa____Muniain
___________RVP
That forward line would be flexible, but if we wanted a bid more rigidity we could easily play Valencia and Young. That team would be up there with Madrid, Barca and Bayern I fancy.

I've accepted it now. I honestly cannot see any reason SAF would think our midfield options are capable of doing better than last season, which surely must be the aim before any season?
So, all I can think is that SAF is sticking to his guns. He doesnt' want to buy a Cm and "give in to fan pressure" or be proven wrong in thinking what we had was sufficient - it clearly isn't, think of Basle and Bilbao as 4 x games where this was not only apparent, but frightening.
Nobody's coming so I guess it's time to get stuck in and back the lads. No hope for silverware from me personally, but here's to 3points on Sunday.

We have a much better team than last season, surely that is obvious to anybody?
We will have sold Park and Berbatov and replaced with Kagawa and van Persie, as well as 3 youngsters who can hopefully step up.
I wish we got that midfielder we desire, and I know you are pessimistic about Fletcher, but if he does come back at 80% of what he was he could be exactly what we need. He was never a world beater but that isn't what you want your box to box midfielder to be. Also Carrick going back into there will make a big difference.
Let's all get behind the lads, stop being so negative and enjoy the season.
I for one am so excited to see the football we play with valencia, kagawa, rooney and van persie, it could be unbelievable.

I personally think I'm just being realistic - our midfield was torn to shreds by teams like Basle last season. I dont see it being any different, its a pessimistic view I guess but I find it hard to look at our midfield and go "wow, that is a solid lineup".
RED_SKY

Jred,
What you said makes you realistic but most people would also agree we are one player away from having one of our best squads for years. Surely without that player we are still pretty decent, especially if one player steps up.
Like I said, I don't want my defensive mid to be a world beater necessarily I want him to be good at what he does, break the play up and give it to the world beaters, which we have quite a few of.
Realistic is suggesting we need a midfielder, pessimistic is to say we have no chance of winning a trophy, I don't that it realistic in the slightest as we are better than we were last season and city aren't.
I am unsure why it makes me wrong to be optimistic and enjoy my hobby or supporting the greatest club in the world rather than moan all the time but it appears we have a lot of 'realistic' people on here!

Seems fletcher went a full 90 in a u21 match. First off I'm thrilled he's healthy, but from a football standpoint he could be the exact player we need. Carrick can protect the back four, but his interplay and quickness don't match well with kagawa and cleverly. Fletcher is more than capable of protecting the back four and providing steel to the midfield, but he will be a much better fit for our new attack. We could then have had Cabaye Witsel and Clevs as a 3 man CM when needs be and on top of ability with the ball there would be a bit of steel in Witsel with a top hustler in Cabaye and Clevs covering the ground work.
