Evening. How do you think we'll approach tomorrow's match? Two wingers and a two man midfield with Rooney playing just behind the striker, or would we be better off flooding the midfield with welbeck played in a wide position in front of Valencia at right back.
I think Hernandez is due a game, but I hope he is not played as lone striker, as he does not excel in that system.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Why would we play Valencia at RB?

DDG
Rafa/Rio/Evans/Evra
Nani/Carrick/Jones/Giggs
Rooney/Hernandez

Switching between 4-5-1, 4-3-3 and 4-4-2

Raphael went off early against Sunderland with a groin strain. If that is the case, then he won't be fit. Unless saf is pulling a fast one!

Please post in banter.

There have been a lot of people slating a lot of our squad this season so just thought i'd give my views on the main squad members.

DeGea - on his way to being an exceptional keeper
Lindegaard - good back up keeper but not a 1st choice

If both GK's are happy I would happily keep them both.

Rafael - has had a great season and is still improving
Evans - same as Rafael
Rio - had a great season and I hope he has 1 more for us
Vidic - been getting better and better since his return
Evra - been very good going forward but poor defensively
Smalling - does well when given a chance, has a great future
Jones - same as Smalling
Buttner - looks great going forward but needs work
defensively

I would possibly sell Evra and give Fabio/Buttner a season together and if that doesn't work i'd buy a new LB in summer 2014. That is the only defensive change needed this summer as long as Rio/Vidic stay.

Carrick - been class this season
Cleverley - good squad player but not as first choice
Anderson - too fat, too lazy, always injured, goodbye
Giggs - deserves 1 final season and still in shape
Powell - has a very bright future
Kagawa - with the right midfielders behind supplying him he
will be awsome.

I'd sell anderson and buy a quality CM to help Carrick, rest are ok.

Young - not enough quality to be first choice and inconsistent
Valencia - won't take on his man which was his biggest asset,
If he gets it back he will be great again.
Nani - far too inconsistent but great on his day
Welbeck - good cover for wide positions but useless through
the middle.

Personally I would sell Young and Nani is leaving anyway. Zaha will be a very good player for us and I would also get another winger in.

RVP - class
Rooney - great on his day but his days are becoming much
less frequent, very injury prone, struggles to keep
fitness.
Hernandez - great finisher and impact player, must stay

If we aren't going to offer Rooney a new contract now he has to leave this summer in my eyes to get any decent money for him. If he leaves then I can see Lewandowski coming with maybe Goetze too if we can get him.

I'd love this summer to be really exciting but I just feel that it won't be. We'll get a midfielder and possibly a striker if someone leaves but then I think it might be a few younger lads for the future. Hope i'm wrong.

Manchester United has always been known for having a great youth acadamy and bringing players through into the first team. Producing first team players like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Nicky Butt, Darren Fletcher and Paul Scholes in the past.
But if you look at the past 10 years how many has been produced?
Tom Cleverley, Jonny Evans and Danny Welbeck
Why so few I think its down to current youth players not getting a chance in the first team.
Michael Keane 20 (0 apps), Larnell Cole 20 (0 apps), Jesse Lingard 20 (0 apps), Ryan Tunnicliffe 20 (0 apps), Will Keane 20 (1 apps), Marnick Vermijl 21 (0 apps), Scott Wootton 21 (0 apps), Davide Petrucci 21 (0 apps).
If you compare that to Barcelona youth players that came through that are of the same age
Thiago Alcntara 21 (60 apps), Cristian Tello 21 (30 apps), Martn Montoya 21 (19 apps), Isaac Cuenca 21 (16 apps).
Now if you look at the players we sold that were a success at there clubs Ryan Shawcross (0 apps) sold at 19 for 1 Million, Giuseppe Rossi (5 apps 1 goal) sold at 19 for 6. 6 Million and Gerard Piqu (12 apps) sold at 19 for 5 Million maybe if we played them more we would of realised what we had a not sold or sold for more.
We've already lost potential stars Paul Pogba, Zeki Fryers and Ravel Morrison due to lack of first team opportunities and I am hoping the same thing doesn't happen to Adnan Januzaj and Mats Daehli in the future!

Believable13 Unbelievable8

Fryers and Morrison didn't leave due to not getting games they both left because of their bad attitudes and Pogba left due to him refusing to sign an already ridiculously overpriced contract, we don't want players who don't want to play for us, end of story.

Agree4 Disagree6

For someone whom used to play youth all the time, saf suddenly stopped playing them. These are no longer young players, at 20. They should be establishing themselves in the team. But not a chance of that.

Agree5 Disagree4

The reality is that any teenager breaking into our first team and holding down a regular place must be a superstar in the making ie Ronaldo or Messi calibre.
We have a very strong squad

Agree2 Disagree3

Anon that's just what the club said Pogba said ''that even though there was a shortage of midfielders at Old Trafford, he was not given an opportunity''
But this is not about Pogba it about the current youth players get first team experience at man utd!

Agree3 Disagree1

How will we know if there a superstar in the making if they are not given a chance?

Agree6 Disagree0

I think these days when a player shows a glimpse of having talent teams promote them straight to the first team and in some ways it hinders their development and highers their demands for contracts they do not deserve. At United they follow a procedure for a players development and when this is complete they will then make judgement on if they are good enough to be fighting for a first team spot. Obviously there are special cases, eg Rooney. Look at Liverpool with Sterling, good potential, thrown straight into the first team, demanded a massive contract, burnt himself out half way through the season and now probably won't play again till next season. Look at Jonny Evans, followed United's youth development program, worked hard through youth level, had successful loan spells and came back to challenge for a first team place. Arguable one of the best centre backs in the EpL now because of it. If Pogba had of been patient for a little longer I think he would of been a better player and would of been in the heart of united's midfield for years to come. (Or do people think he falls into the "special" bracket?) If a player has the hunger to succeed and become the best they can be then they will not mind waiting that extra year or 2 for the big contract because they will be a better player for it.
Maybe agents play a big part in this side of things now days and I guess when someone is waving potentially millions at you it doesn't take much persuading.

Not sure if I've explained my point very well there, it's late and I've had a few lol

IHaveNoName!

Agree3 Disagree1

The whole youth development issue tends to be very cyclical. You seem to be using Barca as a comparison but you should also bare in mind that in 1999 when we had Beckham, Giggs and the rest Barca had a squad with very few players brought through their youth set up. Hesp, Reiziger, the De Boers, Cocu, Kluivert, Litmanen, Rivaldo, Bogarde, Zenden. All players who were part of their first team and brought in from elsewhere. There will come a time, once again, where we bring through top talent from our youth ranks. We just have to be patient.

Agree1 Disagree2

When a messi or Ronaldo appear on the scene you know their going to be superstars it's then about managing them.
You get your chance at United if and when the manager believes your ready.
Think about how we managed Ronaldo and how he matured unlike Wilshire who Arsenal rely too much on.

Agree2 Disagree2

Hey Anonymous,

What you said just proves the point.
Ronaldo had played around 80 games for united by the time he turned 20.
He played basically every single game, although he was shocking for his first three years and was carried by a not very strong team to begin with, hence we didn't win anything in those three years!
The players coming through today at United don't play at all for the first team!
Yes we have a strong squad, hence we never even put the youngsters in the bench!

I am not happy with the way SAF is treating the youngsters in recent time, but I guess he doesn't really have a choice since he has 23 excellent first teamers to keep happy.

Still you can't argue they are not given a chance in our first team, like they are at Barca e. g.

Just wanted to get a few peoples' opinions as it seems a lot of posters on here are under the assumption that Lewandowski will certainly sign for United this summer. I do rate him as a striker and I think he would suit the EPL just fine, but is he really a priority? I see a lot of people saying that out of the strikers we have, they would like to see Welbeck or Hernandez go and Lewandowski come in.

Personally, I would be pretty disappointed if this happened. Welbeck is still very young, and while his finishing obviously isn't quite up to par, he does exceptionally well in other departments of the game. He works tremendously hard, and he's United through and through. He'll play any position, and he's performed well in big games. Besides, our team isn't lacking in goals, and I'm sure Welbeck's finishing will improve with time and a prolonged period playing more centrally. The quality of Hernandez' finishing is unquestionable, and the kind of movement he has around the box is fantastic. He hasn't been playing consistently or been receiving great service this season, yet he's still chipped in with a fair amount of goals.

So why purchase Lewandowski? Rooney and RVP both offer much more with their all around game in my opinion, and Dortmund would demand a pretty significant transfer fee. Some people point to Rooney shifting from a striker to a midfielder as one of the reasons for looking at a high profile striker, but I don't see it happening. Rooney is fantastic at playing in the hole, as a frontman, and on either side of a front 3, and you could say the same about RVP. Unless Rooney himself is sold in the summer, which isn't out of the realm of possibility, I don't see Lewandowski being bought.

But what do you guys think? Would you gladly get rid of Hernandez, Welbeck, or even Rooney to see Lewandowski brought in? And potentially at the expensive of bringing in one or two of the midfield players we desperately need?

Believable3 Unbelievable4

I wouldn't say that he is a priority no, and I would hope that other areas are strengthened as a matter of urgency. Lewandowski is a class player though, got a niggling feeling that he will end up at Bayern though, not sure why.

___________De Gea
Rafael___Evans___Vidic___Evra
_____Strootman__Carrick
Welbeck____Rooney_____Kagawa
____________RVP

Still think that is highly likely to be the way that we line up. Would love Baines in there though. Valencia will pick up again if he gets fully fit and Young is a good squad player. Can't see us spending big on Rodriguez. Begovic & Strootman are the msot likely signings. Plenty of others are plausible though. would be delighted to see Thiago join. Would be dissapointed for Garay to repalce Ferdinand though, I think he has another good year left in him. Fabio will be like a new signing as well I think. {Ed004's Note - I'm hoping for Wanyama, Strootman, Baines and Rodriguez, though would love to make a move this summer for Gotze}

Agree3 Disagree0

Would be happy with that but I do like the look of shaw at southampton and would love bale as well------------phil

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed004 those 4 you named (not including Goetze) I think would be a fantastic summer for us, on top of Zaha. It's what I would do TBH seeing as Bale is a bit far fetched. The only one I'm confident will actually arrive at OT though is Strootman, the other 3 I'm not so sure unfortunately.

Agree0 Disagree0

Think Kagawa would be better in the centre rather than the wing but expect there would be a lot of interplay between the 3 'secondary' forwards behind RVP. I can see us signing Lewandowski as long term replacement for RVP hence recreating the Lewi and Kagawa partnership. Personal view is if we sign Lewandowski this summer Rooney would be on his way out. Appreciate there's talk of Hernandez moving on which would be a real shame as he plays the Ole role so well. I believe there's potential contract talks with Rooney this summer and suspect if say PSG made a £30m+ bid and Rooney looked to play hardball again on a new deal he would definitely be on his way out.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Mar 2013 19:39:08
i would prefer a bid for either Jackson Martinez at porto or benteke at villa, don't rate lewandowski he's a bit like a crouch type of player not very pacey just a good header of ball.

Believable1 Unbelievable7

Are you the same person that posted before?

Agree0 Disagree3

Did I just read "just a good header of the ball"! Have you ever seen him play!
Nat

Agree4 Disagree0

Lool! Not very pacy? Are you serious?

Just a good header of the ball? Lewandowski is the most accomplished striker when it comes to dribbling atm. His technicall ability is also great, his power and pace allows him to dribble past players with ease, a bit like Ronaldo. His link-up play is also faultless. If anything, his heading is the only part of his game he has to improve ( he is still a better header than any striker we have ). If he keeps improving his finishing and doesn't miss as many chances as he does, Lewandowski will become the best striker in the world. His all around attributes are the best in the world.

Mick

He has a lot to offer. Certainly more than Hernandez who is and always will be just an impact penalty box striker. However Mick, he is not as good as you are making him out to be.

Shahram that Viktor Fischer is off to spurs in the summer and if you think Eriksen isn't that good then you really need to get a to take a good look at yourself.

Gingernuts

Believable3 Unbelievable7

Not my cup of tea and if Fisher does end up at spurs I would be very disappointed, cause he is the type of player that we should be buying before his market value skyrockets.

I know Eriksen aspires to play for Barcelona or Real, but nowhere near good enough and as someone posted earlier a good fit for liverpool. He will end up going for about 12 to 15 million pounds.

Shahram

Agree1 Disagree0

You should stop reading and believing all the hype in the papers. Did you know he failed 2 try outs at Chelsea.

For an attacking midfielder I can think of a lot of players that I would take before him. Good player but nothing to go gaga about.

Shahram

Agree1 Disagree1

Eriksen has the potential to be world class, but he's not there yet. I don't think he knows what his best position is and he is no where near robust enough to play in CM but he is not as good as someone like Rooney or Kagawa behind the striker.

Agree0 Disagree2

Since when was Fischer off to spurs, last I checked he was staying with Ajax, and shahram has a point, Eriksen has failed to perform at a high level at international level especially major tournaments, a very good player, don't think he's what we need.
Nat

Agree0 Disagree1

Nat

Compared to what we have at the moment he would be an improvement but I am hoping we better come this summer.

He does not have the pace of a hazzard or ozil or gotze to cut through the midfield of an opposing team and hence not I want.

'sigh', if you don't like what read, sod off and play somewhere else you muppet. Go and watch Spurs or Arsenal, who haven't won a trophy for as long as I can remember.

Agree10 Disagree0

Go support them then? I'd rather be top of the table personally than 3rd or 5th like them. Arsenal's flair comes only in patches as does Spurs, neither have the same clinical edge to their game that we have. Obviously we have areas to improve - as does any team - but because of SAF we look to be heading towards at least one more trophy this year. And then he'll look to improve the squad in the summer.

I'm not sure "I see it how it is" and "Fergie out" can be in the same post without it being a joke.

For the people who slated our performance yesterday, you have to remember several details.
All of our attacking four had played a part in 2 international games, Valencia and kagawa especially had racked up some incredible air miles!
Also, it wasn't a strongest line up at all, young and Anderson are squad players, and I feel kagawa links up better with Rooney. People moan about only winning 1-0, but if young had supplied RVP with a better pass, it would have almost certainly been a goal right at the end.
One last thing, i've seen some posts where people say Rodriguez is over hyped, not worth the quoted price etc, I cannot understand this, Rodriguez is already a fantastic player with huge potential! We need someone of his flair!
Nat

Believable3 Unbelievable2

Why was Young's pass not good?

Agree2 Disagree0

Is he worth £40 million though? I'd argue no.

Is he better than say Hazard, Mata, Ozil, Gotze?

Again i'd say no.

We do need a winger but not at that sort of cost, higher priority is 2 central midfielders to replace Scholes, Fletcher, Anderson.

Agree2 Disagree1

Young's pass was short and too late, RVP had to stall his run.
Rodriguez wouldn't cost 40 closer to 30, and he may be better than all of those if he came to united
Nat

Agree1 Disagree3

We won't sign Rodriguez, I am pretty certain of that. Welbeck will become a winger next season and therefore we might be able to keep Rooney, Hernandez, RVP and Lewy as our 4 strikers.

Can't believe the abuse referees put up with in football these days. Gerrard's rant at the ref after that yellow card was absolutely ridiculous. Total lack of respect for the official that will be copied up and down the country on kids pitches.

This isn't just a bitter rant at a scouse player either, our players can be just as bad-Rooney often berates officials.

Can't understand why they don't just get back to yellow/red carding players who clearly hurl abuse directly at a match official.

It seems like the refs are concerned that sending off a player for decent will be viewed as them losing control? I think players sense a weak ref and know they can shout anything at them and they won't do anything.

Believable9 Unbelievable0

31 Mar 2013 16:09:00
Should be like in rugby, yellow card and you go sit in the dug out for ten minutes. See how many petty offences happen then. I think the whole system needs sorting out. I'd bring in a third card for stuff like first offences, then yellow and the sin bin for a second and leave red for only the most serious of offences. With teams getting people binned they'd start to see sense.

Agree4 Disagree0

Dodgy, don't get me started! Pulling shirts, wrestling at corners, appealing when you know you touched it last, edging forwards at free kicks so the wall ends up about 7 yards away, screaming in the face of linesmen who flagged for a foul, and my personal favourite, excessive time wasting. It's time the authorities got a grip

Agree5 Disagree0

Come off it! I agree that something needs to be done, but MU are one of the worst teams for surrounding the ref, berating officials etc. Even your manager can't help but try and intimidate officials! And if we're going to sin-bin players for foul language then Rooney might as well have his own seat on the touch line!

Agree4 Disagree7

If you check my post noname I included MU in my critisism, and specifically Rooney!

I'm particularly annoyed by this growing trend of berating a ref when he's just given out a card. It seems no ref is brave enough to brandish a second yellow and send them off.

Biggest concern is the damage to the grass roots game. Rooney, Gerrard et al are heros of young kids growing up. So what are they going to do when they play and don't agree with a refs decision.

Red cards are too harsh a punishment, so refs won't give them. Agree that maybe sin binning would work, but would completely change the dynamic if the game - so can't see it happening.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh yeah, when did we last berate a ref like Gerrard did today?

Agree0 Disagree0

The same respect shown in rugby union should be the norm in football and all other sports. It is only when managers stand up and demand this level of respect from the players that they pick will players behave themselves.

J Bones.

Agree1 Disagree0

When did you last berate a ref? Champions League - Real Madrid - Ring any bells? What Rio Ferdinand did after the match was ok was it? What short memories you have!

Agree0 Disagree3

Your manager was so eager to have a go at the officials he almost ran over his own kitman! Respect for the ref starts at the top and its clear your manager has no respect WHATSOEVER for officials. Get your own house in order before complaining about other teams.

DEFINITELY worth a punt from united

Believable2 Unbelievable8

Happy Easter, maybe lay off the wine a bit. Benteke is good, but nowhere near as good as Lewandowski. And unlike yourself (no name) I actually have followed Lewandowski ever since his name was associated with united. A cross between Dzeko and drogba IMO. Although Benteke is still a very good player, he offers less.

a quick question for you guys! I know Evra is really good going forward but is seriously lacking defensively. The way I see it that is Buttner too! So my question is do you think we should just play Buttner give him the experience on the run in and let him get a run of games together to see what he can really do. If we don't we are left with Buttner Fabio and Evra at the start of a new season, not knowing who to pick. I really think this kid could have a great oppurtunity to grab our lb spot by the scruff of the neck for next season.

Personally I think that's what he needs. He reminds me a lot of Evra when we first signed him. The differance was Evra was given the game time to grow and smooth out his rough edges. I think if we give Buttner the same chance he wilk suprise a few people.

Agree13 Disagree1

Agree I hate they way we barely give certain players a chance and then move them on for example tosic is a very solid winger better than young. but I think he made a couple of minutes for united

He is defo a player with potential. 1 we should keep. But I still feel we need a LB to balance Rafeals emergence from the right. A BIG ASK.

Hold on Sulei - Tosic being a better player than Young? How would you know this, if you didn't get to see him play too much?

He obviously wasn't considered good enough - have you heard of him since? Me neither, so I assume he's hardly set the footballing world alight.

SAF let him go for a reason, and he and his team would have seen him play/train every day. Considerably more times than you or me, so I'll assume on that evidence, he wasn't all that.

The one thing that annoys me about this site is the people who come on after every game and just moan. Yes its your perogative. But its every game. During the game and half time are the worst as you just make yourselves look silly. We're winning games, haven't conceded in six, top, fifteen points clear, won at liverpool, city and chelsea. Ok playing style hasn't been brilliant but i'll take points and prizes over pretty and winning nothing like arsenal. And the constant picking and kicking of players. Its not needed. Yes there are players we've signed and i've raised my eyebrows. Yes there are players I think we should sell. But whilst their on the pitch in a red shirt i'll back them until their time at United is ended. Look at the abuse Carrick got over the last four years on here, strangely gone quiet this season when he's been our best player. Evans got it loads the last couple seasons as well but gone quiet now he's had a season where he's reaching his potential and has been our second most consistent player. Rafael also has had abuse look at him this season. Fletcher probably got the most abuse of anyone but now your all moaning about the need for a Fletcher type player. De Gea got abuse, we all know the faults with his game, it looks like he's working on them, hasn't conceded in six. Now its Cleverley and Welbeck. Its pretty much almost guaranteed you'll be having a large helping of humble pie if they progress like the others. I'd start trusting in Ferguson's judgement he hasn't messed up too many times and seeing these players everyday i'd say he knows more than anyone on this site. My point is how about backing the players. I'd say that it was all the spoilt younger generation playstation fans who have only known success and don't know any different and didn't see the rubbish we had in the eighties. But its not though is it and some of you saw, like me, players like Brazil, Birtles, Davenport and so on wearing red and playing poor. that's what I don't get. You've seen much worse players at United and still have to attack players who if they had been at United back then would have been quality. All this talk about people not being United standard. Garbage what the chuff is United standard because from 1973 to 1993 there was a lot of players who were nowhere near this mythical ideal either. No I don't want to go back to those days, but the club is bigger now and the majority of the players attacked over this mythic standard didn't turn out too bad go the end. By all means have an opinion but let's have less of these pointless attacks on players and remember we are United! Not some small and bitter club. MrE

Most of us who tell the truth haven't been impressed by the above, but the rest of the team have been superb. I've never slagged carrick, Evans or Raphael, but some of the players we have are simply not good enough.
If we can't say so, then how will we improve?

No name, nothing anyone says on here will change the manager's thoughts or opinions on a player. People are entitled to their opinions on players, performances, tactics etc, but those opinions will not alter the manager's thoughts even remotely. Evra has been lacking defensively for three years, but he's still our first choice LB. People will disagree with the manager's opinions or choices as that is inevitable, but what happens will always be his decision as long as he is in charge, nothing anyone says on here will change that.

Cheers lads i've been simmering for awhile and finally cracked after yesterdays game. Its not been vintage we can agree on that, but having watched United for three decades and seen a lot of players and teams I can see the direction we're going in and what we're trying to achieve and my instincts tell me we're on the verge of something special. This season is the midpoint of the transition. Next season will see us heading into the last part. Two seasons time we'll see the end results. MrE

No name as I said there are certain players who I think we shouldn't have signed, or that I would like to see sold, maybe because their in decline, or as stated aren't upto it. However moaning about them three months before the transfer window doesn't achieve anything. The manager will know what needs to be done and has always worked on an evolution not revolution basis. We don't have the resources of City or Chelsea to throw half the team out and replace them. The manager works within his means. This summer will see a mini clear out of those not deemed good enough and a strengthening of the midfield. Patience is required. We're still winning unlike many of our rivals. MrE

Mr E

I did not watch the club in the 60's, 70's but have been watching them in the 80's 90's and 20's. I am not sure what you are trying to say that just because 40 to 50 years ago we had some poor players that it ok to have players who are not good enough for today's team.

I mean are you kidding me, football today is very different and United is different beast to the club you watched 40 to 50 years ago.

FYI some the players that you mentioned I have always rated and you will not find posts from me criticizing them, however since my post was about Hernandez and Lewandowski, I would get rid of welbeck for lewandowski in a minute.

No shahram i'm just saying players should be supported rather than constantly attacked for faults. They've managed to do something we'd all kill to do. I know you've supported players like Carrick previously. that's my point he's a player that's had pelters over his United career but he's been our best most consistent player this season. All of the players I listed have come in for criticism and all have taken strides towards improvement. I expect the same from Cleverley and Welbeck in the coming years and feel there is nothing to be gained from attacking young players who can and will improve. I never said anything about having poor players decades ago means we should accept poor players now. I think if people think the likes of Young and co are poor then they should get a time machine and see some of the crap we saw under big ron. In football your never going to have the perfect side there'll always be weak points in every team. Its in identifying and improving the weak points that we will get better. I'm just saying fans now are spoilt with success and keep picking on players without giving them a chance whereas we had no success and had to endure players far worse than what we have now. If the internet had existed like it does today then players and fans would have been having breakdowns. MrE

Agree4 Disagree0

Mr E fair enough and point taken.

I was not slating Welbeck but also think people here make certain players a lot better than what they are.

I honestly think he was better a year ago and hope he is not another one that year over year we wait on the promise that he will come good.

Funny thing is I have liked carrick from the day we bought him and always thought he was better being the playmaker but not great playing as second midfielder to scholes.

Seems funny how u are jumping on the backs of people just because they wernt alive or old enough to remember utd in the 70-80s, I think my standards are the same as anyones on here, but just because u are old enough to remember watching utd in the dark days your standards are some what lower? I dnt get what u are trying to say? i'm sure u want to see the best players playing for our great club yes? I can totally except we are in a transition and atm we are not blessed with players like previous teams we have had, saying that, is it wrong to expect a better performance for from top class international players i. e Young? Valencia?
I take on board your point on humble pie normally being eaten when a quick judgement is made without patience i. e fletcher but at the same time we have seen wot Valencia can do, we are getting what we thought we would from Young when he was signed (inconsitency) but just because we have had worse that does not mean we should just settle for what we have. The reason utd are wot we are and won as much as we have is because we don't stand still, we move out the duds and replace them either with the youth system or signings. i'm more than prepered to give certain players time like clevs and DDG but there are players at our club that wouldn't be there if we had even a sprinkle of players from 20 years ago.
Yes winning is the best feeling in the world and one as a utd fan we have come to expect on a regular basis but to my mind we have not always played so slow and tbh mediocre football at times, if it wasn't for our top players we wouldn't be 15 points clear, take RVP, vidic and Rio for example these are real top draw players, Then add a Michael Carrick playing his best ever football and we have 4 of the best players in the prem in there positions but what about the rest? most of them wouldn't be starting in most other teams in the top four, yes we have young players that will take time to devlope and i'm more than willing to give them time to turn into the finished artical but what about the supposed finished players that should be top of there game, young? rooney? evra? valencia? anderson? nani? they are not, not utd standard they are just not top standard! tell me in 3 years where will oscar be? hazard? bale? mata? aguero? wilshire? etc, ill tell u, prob hitting a higher standard of performance than our so called top players i. e Young, Valencia etc, that's what worries me the most, not the now, but the future and that what is what we have done so well in the past, but while we have people just excepting it, is when we turn into liverpool or arsenal, because I tell football is not slow moving it will bite u quicker than u think just look at arsenal and chelsea and further back liverpool. Will I support the team no matter what? of course I will there is no question about that, will my love for united dampen if we fade? never! But it doesn't have to happen and if fergie makes this up comming window a priority window it wont. but while it seems the manager can only do patch up jobs in the market we will!

Agree1 Disagree2

Good post MrE.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, that's football! I have my moments being a United fan but ultimately whoever crosses the line gets my full support. Constantly slating players before during and after every game is hard to comprehend sometimes. Young players are exactly that, young, inexperienced but in the case of Cleverly and Wellbeck, they're full of enthusiasm, they love the club and they will give their all. Cleverly for me is neat and tidy, he's busy and he has this terrible habit of passing to his teamates. Talk about Pogba all you like, he may well turn into a world class player but how can he be judged as the messiah after one decent season in a poor league. He was offered a good contract and simply had to bide his time because Sir Alex has proved for many years if you're good enough you're old enough. Cleverly, Wellbeck and Evans are reaping the rewards of being patient and learning their trade. De Gea is repaying the faith shown in him and will be a better player for his early season experience.

Carrick is an exceptionally good player, despite the constant moaning of some, he doesn't just pass the ball to the side or backwards. He does on occasion but that's what I would call retaining possession! He tidies up in front of the back four, he doesn't shy away when he makes a mistake and he's the complete professional, no histrionics, no demands and I would imagine a joy to play with.

I've no doubt Kagawa will be the next victim of the snipers. He's not scoring left right and centre so he's a waste of money etc etc. Again for me he has improved as the season has gone on, he's been sacrificed at times when others could have been taken off. He played well on Saturday and personally I think he links up very well with RVP. Next season I'm sure he will kick on and become a constant in the side.

Ultimately football divides opinion, players, managers, chairmen, they all divide opinion. Everyone is entitled to theirs. Perhaps this generation of United fans are used to constant success and expect United to spend tens of millions on big names because city and Chelsea etc do. For me the outstanding image of the season is the obvious spirit in the United dressing room, they play as a team, for each other and for me that's what Manchester United is all about.

No more match of the fever, face facts. Gareth bale is 23 years old and is becoming a world class footballer. Break the bank this summer. He's the kid we need. He's playing like a star week after week

Joe. a {Ed004's Note - Only way I can see funds being available for Bale is if Rooney is sold and we offer someone like Young/Nani in exchange. None of which IMO are likely to happen}

Believable5 Unbelievable2

I don't think it's possible for us to get him but I'd like to think everyone (even the doubters) can now appreciate just how good Bale is. At 23 he is outstanding and will be a huge asset to whoever gets him.

Agree0 Disagree0

Bale is a great player. For spurs. We will not sign himAs he is too overpriced. No offence to spurs, as they are progressing well. But he is a big cog in their machine. At united he would be nowhere near as effective, we have underrated players throughout our squad who would look awesome at Spurs. I appreciate this might ruffle feathers. But am entitled to my opinion, and don't care. I am for the greater good of united. Bale for £60m plus huge wages isn't that.

Agree3 Disagree6

Patzi, I agree that for anywhere near £60m it should be a no-go for the good of the club. However, what basis do you have to say he would be 'nowhere near as effective' for United? I really don't get it when people say this, there's an argument to say he would be improve with better players aroud him and wouldn't be relied on as much. Nobody knows for sure but I don't see any reason to think he would lose his effectiveness at a bigger club.

Agree4 Disagree0

Bale at united will be simply unstoppable. Can u imagine once he links up with rvp Rooney/Hernandez and the chances he'll get, he will be a perfect fit.
I wonder whether the rumours about him saying NW is no good are true? Hope not. He will be stupid not to jump at the chance to play for us.
Only problem is for our attackers to keep pace with him!

31 Mar 2013 11:58:15
I wouldn't worry about it, the press at this stage of the season are looking for stories rather than truth. Its a better story to link us to players in positions that would have a casualty. Such as signing a striker like Lewandowski must mean that Hernandez or Rooney will be sold, or signing a centre back must mean Rio or Vidic are leaving. By linking us to these players they are creating a story that isn't there and they can sell more papers with headlines like "Rooney leaving?" than they can by linking us with a much needed midfielder which would have no casualties meaning they can't make a follow up story for it. The press is 95% rubbish. Use your own judgement and comkon sense and you'll be closer to the truth than any of these rags.

To the whingers, in the league this year we have scored 4 goals on 6 occasions and 3 goals on 8 occasions. Admittedly, a lot of this was earlier in the season but we were also conceding a lot back then. We haven't conceded in the league in the last 6 games and have racked up 7 straight wins.

I have been disappointed that we don't dominate teams too often and I'm not sure whatlaying style we are trying to deliver but we all know there are a couple of positions to fix in the summer. Right now, I'll take the league and any records that come with it. Solid 1-0 wins will do the job if that's what it comes to.

Believable8 Unbelievable1

Also the small point that we are the league top scorers with 70, 11 more then the next nearest team.

I think a few people on here could win the Euro Lottery and still moan it's not enough!

Simple fact is, if we win the league, people will not remember any performances, they'll remember great moments, RVP against City and at Anfield etc and most importantly being crowned champions.

Agree7 Disagree0

So do you guys think that we have played with the usual flair and style and power of previous united teams? No way. That's what people are complaining about.
You mentioned city and Liverpool games. Against city, we were good first half then tevez comes on and city completely dominated midfield and second half, let's face it, we were lucky to win. Against the scousers, we had the same problem, they had a man sent off and still dominated in second half.
No one is critisizing the manner in which this team can grind out results, they are superb at doing that, all credit to saf and the players for that. It is a trait which is difficult to have, luckily we've got it. Our wishes though is for our side to have more skill, steel, and composure in midfield. And apart from carrick, the current midfield does not possess these. Witness the worst Sunderland side I've seen yesterday and even they gave us a game in the second half.
Nomidfield

Agree6 Disagree3

Nomidfield,

We would all like to win playing free flowing football, smashing the team of the park but the point is there have been countless debates on here this season that our GK wasn't good enough, our defense wasn't good enough, we should of strengthened our midfield in the summer and then in the next breath complaining that our performances are not good enough! You've even said in your post apart from Carrick our current midfield does not possess skill, steel, composure so if this is how you feel, why you expecting us to smash teams?

How about you look at what is being built in this team, SAF will strengthen in the summer no worries about that but one thing you cannot coach is a winning mentality and this team has it and with some good buys in the summer, we will see a more dominant United team like teams before.

But the main point is fans will remember great moments, come the new season, Agueros highlight on Sky will be replaced by RVP's free kick versus them, people won't think "that's all very well but we were rubbish in the second half" when they see the clip.

Agree2 Disagree0

31 Mar 2013 11:14:04
Nomidfield that's the point that's been made though. We all know the midfield is weak but we're still top by a massive margin and the highest scorers in the league. The bigger issue has been the form of the wingers. There usually the main creative outlet and none of them have performed. what's the odds of all three all going off form together. There isn't much we can do about it in april though. These should be sorted in summer and next season I think you'll see a better standard of performances. Remember clean sheets win league titles. MrE

Agree0 Disagree0

NoMidfield,, I've voiced the same concern myself this year, on occasions we have not been great to watch. My issue is the doom mongers and whiners who ignore that we are top scorers, are 18 points clear, looking really solid at the back and just find fault continually. I'd like us to get back to the swash buckling days but right now, I'll take the league

Agree2 Disagree0

Nomidfield, believe it or not but it's our tactics to let the other team have possession and for us to soak it up and counter attack. It's not an exciting viewing I agree, but it's effective and we are top because of it. The other team having more possession doesn't necessarily mean they are dominating, not when we are letting them pass the ball needlessly around midfield.

Agree10 Disagree0

Yes we all know midfield is our weakest point and we haven't dominated in that many games, but NoMidfield, would you rather that we'd smashed a few teams by 5 or 6 or would you rather that we grind out 25 wins out of 30 games? Hopefully we will improve the midfield in the summer but the point is, do we need to come out and slate the midfield after every game when we all know our strengths and weaknesses? 3 points at this stage in the seasonis what it's all about.

Agree1 Disagree0

Agreed guys. I think saf will be on the case in the summer, if we can get an imposing defensive midfielder and a creative midfielder and a winger, then I think we'll be well on the way.
Our team and the boss have done brilliantly and no one can take that away from us.

Well if you believe what Fergie says, he says he will not even entertain offers for Hernandez and I am so glad.

If true, how does Lewandowski fit into the current squad. I do hope we buy him and prefer him over Welbeck any day.

I honestly can't figure out what is it that Welbeck is good?

He is so un-coordinated, clumsy and poor with zero composure around the box.

If it is for his defensive work in the middle of the pitch, I would rather see a proper box to box Midfielder.

Shahram

Believable8 Unbelievable9

You should watch what he does for the team, RVP has scored 1 in 10 if you give him yesterday's but does anyone question his contribution to the team? No because he links play well, holds the ball up bringing others into play.

Welbeck has contributed a lot this season to the team and the wins, he can turn defence into attack when he runs the ball out from the back, his link up play is actually decent in attacking areas, quick 1/2 touch play.

I maintain that strikers improve with age because of maturity and composure and Welbeck will but he also contributes in other areas and should be more appreciated.

Agree6 Disagree3

What nonsense Wellbeck is a key player in both our squad and England's, if that's our highly you rate him then I wonder about your understanding of what makes a Utd player.
Lewandowski if signed is a completely different player and if he does sign don't be thinking Wellbeck will be going anywhere, I suggest you read Gary Neville's article in today's Daily Mail.

Agree8 Disagree4

Shahram, I'm glad Hernandez is staying. However, we need to play him more and we need to be able to change our style a bit when he's on the pitch. The only way we can do that is thru having a good midfield and decent winger/s.
Hopefully saf will sort both these areas in the summer.
Nomidfield

Agree2 Disagree1

Rvp carried the team in first half of the season and scored 19 goals in the process. How many has welbeck scored?
He has no clue what to do in the box as he never looks up.
It might be that he will be better suited to be a midfielder due to his hard work. There again, u need someone who can pass, and he can't do that either.

Agree2 Disagree7

31 Mar 2013 11:51:51
Well no name I think the reason you don't rate Welbeck is because you don't watch him play. His passing is one of his best assets, he has one of the highest pass completion rates of any striker in world football. Last season he finished with a pass completion rate of 89%, the majority of prem midfielders didn't have a pass rate that high.
Then your other "observation" is he doesn't score because he doesn't look up in the box. Well this shows your total lack of football knowledge. The best strikers never look up as they know where the goal is and aren't thinking about passing it but shoot on sight. Welbeck's problem is that he ALWAYS plays with his head up so when he gets in the box he looks to see if their is someone to pass to, then if not then he looks to shoot. Unfortunately normally by this time he has been closed down and the oppertunity has gone. If he played with his head DOWN more he would score more goals. that's why I feel his best postion is either as in inside forward or as a second striker where his vision and passing are more important than shooting and movement. People on slate him as they have labeled him a striker which he isn't, and people only judge strikers on their goals.

Agree11 Disagree2

No name, England are rubbish and him being part of that team means nothing. Barry, Milner and a host of other players are also part of england, which I frankly don't give sh. t about or rate.

Please enlighten me what makes a united player because if that is what makes a united striker god helps us and thank god the other forwards are not following his cue or we would have about 10 goals between the lot and 10 assists.

You are truely clueless if you think he is integral to our makeup, he is being used as a makeshift defensive midfielder on the left wing because we are short of personnel. Leave a name next time.

Ports

I watch every game and RVP scoring 1 in 10 has nothing to do with Welbeck. RVP's control and passing is class and he is most times in the middle and crowded by a lot of defenders. Welbeck sitting on the wing the least you expect is to be able to hold the ball up. The only argument that might be a saving grace is that it is an age thing and he will improve a lot, but at the moment for me he is clueless and a headless chicken and one goal and good marking job on Alonso in the RM game does not change that.

Here is a question for you, if he was not from our youth setup and was playing for another pl team, would you be happy if we went out and bought him.

Shahram

Agree2 Disagree3

Sharam

The point about RVP is that even though he has only scored 1 in 10, no one is questioning him because of what he offers elsewhere. Welbeck offers a lot and is a great outlet for us when we win possession because of his work rate and his defensive duties is a bonus. If you think all he did against Real Madrid was a defensive job on Alonso then this is a pointless debate as you clearly only see what you want rather than looking at the bigger picture.

Technically Welbeck is decent, as for the rubbish question that people always come out with that if he played for another team would we want him, well he went on loan to Sunderland and done a decent job, enough for SAF to bring him back and make him a regular in the match day squad. If he was at another club he'd probably be playing up top game in, game out and would be scoring more often but he is not a "goal scoring" striker like RVP or RVN or Shearer, so don't compare him to them. He is an unorthodox striker who offers the team something different or are both SAF and Hodgson clueless?

Agree1 Disagree0

31 Mar 2013 14:18:51
Shappy, Ports good posts. This is exactly what I mean. People just having a go without appreciating what players do. MrE

Agree2 Disagree0

Ports who said saf is clueless. He is a youth player that has cost us nothing and useful to do a defensive job and rotate in squad.

Hodgson is clueless and sorry to say next year will be another year of bs hype by the media before the wc however England will be send packing early.

You call him an unorthodox striker who offers the team something different, lol I agree because he definitely does not offer any goals or assists. Whilst the argument goes that he is young so is benteke, lucaku and they are miles ahead of him in terms of touch, control passing, shooting and ability to finish.

If we had a decent left-winger I can't see how he gets into the side and where he plays. I hope he does come on as you say but at the moment he is poor and just a body to throw out there in the last 10 minutes to defend.

Shahram

Agree1 Disagree2

Ports and shahram what planet are you from the players you say are better than our Danny are regular starters in their respective teams yet if all these players including Wellbeck became available I know who would have the top clubs chasing them and in which order.
Sir Alex is the most ruthless manager going and if a player isn't up to our standard they are soon moved on now get back on your fantasy football sites and give us another dozen players ahead of Wellbeck and Cleverley

Agree0 Disagree2

There are too many reasons not to get rid of Welbeck at this stage, regardless of his scoring IMO. He does need to improve his composure, first touch and finishing but I still admire his pace, linkup play and work ethic. I think he gives us a good squad option.

For a start he's still young and has plenty of time to improve. He's on low wages, has the club at heart and is willing to play in any position or even to sit on the bench.

We could get Lewandowski instead but would he be willing to sit on the bench? Could he give us the same option at LW? I'd say no to both and he'd also be on much higher wages than Welbeck. No doubt Lew is a better striker but then RVP is better again in this position whereas Welbeck offer a 'different' option.

Sharham - you mention Benteke & Lukaku but we'd have to pay over £20m for each of these guys. The fact is that we already have Welbeck as he came through the academy, he's on low wages and we don't have to pay a transfer fee for him. He's versatile and offers decent options as a 3rd/4th choice striker or 2nd/3rd choice wide forward. And then there is always the chance that he'll develop into a top player over time.

Agree1 Disagree0

No Name how old are you 10?

What utter rubbish. Really, Anderson, young and few others are also in our squad and you still think any of the top teams would be chasing them if they became available? We have had a for sale sign on some of these guys for 2 years and nobody wants them for what we think they are worth.

I am sure they can play for a mid table/lower table team but no chance any of the top 10 clubs would be in for them and the same goes for Welbeck.

We can't even get a top team to bid on some of our players and when they do go we end up selling them at bargain basement prices just to get them of the payroll, because thy are overhyped and overestimated by the average united fan.

If you believe that players like Welbeck, Cleverly are good enough to play for teams like Bayern, Chelsea, Juve, PSG, Barca, RM, City, BR, which I consider as our peers, you are deluded and need a head check.

Shahram

Agree2 Disagree1

HD

I agree with the low wages and the fact that he has cost us nothing in transfer cost. I brought up lukaku and benteke not because I think we should go out ad buy them, although Luakku will be some player in a few years.

Everyone keeps saying how young Welbeck is. Well he has been around and played a lot more pl games than those 2 and they seem to be head and shoulders above him. I think he has actually gotten worst compared to last year and I see very little progress and we might have another Anderson on our hands.

I would still take Lewandowski over him and pay the 20 million pounds for lew and yes he can play out wide if needed as he has all the necessary tools. I guess my beef with Welbeck is if you are a striker by the nature of the job you either score or set up a lot of goals and he does neither, and he is so basic in many of the things he does that a lot of other player can do the same. I also honestly think once we sort our left side with a proper left winger, he will struggle to get into the side.

Maybe he will read this and score a couple against Chelsea tomm as I expect him to start and everyone can jump on my sh. t lol :)

Shahram

Agree1 Disagree1

Shahram I'm sorry mate but if you consider PSG, City, Chealsea & Juventus to be our peers then you clearly are a deluded fantasy football manager we are fortunate to support the greatest run club along with Bayern & Barca we all have a policy to give our own youngsters an opportunity and be patient (something you don't seem to share)we are not run by a ego no idea fantasy football billionaire trying to please people like yourself in supplying you with the so called Marque signings you dream of.
Our consistency over the last 10/15 seasons surely as to be admired if you can't see that we are in the process of putting together the best squad ever at Old Trafford then I give up

Agree1 Disagree1

You seem to confuse ownership with clubs who are going to be vying for top european honors over the next 5 to 10 years.

You also seem to base your views on some ill founded romance of home grown players should be given judged differently. I personally don't care where they come from and if from our youth system then great but if they are not good enough then off they go.

You also seem to forget that our greatest years in winning trophies have also coincided with going out and buying some of the best players out there.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

Please explain our peers criteria

Agree0 Disagree0

We cannot and don't carry any passengers when it comes to our own kids, I am not suggesting that for one minute.
Please understand our consistency over the years is down to balancing homegrown which gives us our heart and soul and our major signings like Van persie/nistletoy etc giving us the cream.
The clubs you believe to be challenging for European honours in the next 5/10 years won't live with us Bayern and Barca trust me.
My only concern is when Sir Alex retires.

Agree1 Disagree0

I agree with noname that the balance of homegrown & bought players, as well as a consistency of staff and environment has been the cornerstone of our success over the years. I think it's important that we always have a nucleus of british players and if they're homegrown all the better - because they have the club in their blood so to speak.

I'd say both Welbeck & Cleverly deserve to remain part of our squad for the next few years, for this reason and because they are good squad options. The fact that we don't have to pay a transfer fee and that they're both on relatively low wages is a big bonus (as I've said) when putting together such a large squad.

Sharham, I understand what you're saying and yes those other players are better right now but I think there's too much value in keeping hold of our homegrown players until they've been given a good opportunity to mature, for the reasons I've stated above.

Agree0 Disagree0

We will be in a dog fight with the likes of chelsea and city just for the pl next year and Arsenal can be incredibly good if Wenger loosens up the purse.

Where we have excelled this year is by grinding out results against lesser teams but not great to watch. However you can only race that horse so many times before it breaks down. The clubs I have listed are all going to be there and I would argue clubs like Chelsea's with their youth and players on loan are stronger than us and going to be challenging for major honors for many years. If I am not mistaken they have won nearly the same amount of silverware when compared to us over the last 10 years.

PSG and City due to their backing will only get better, Juve is not too far off and RM is not going away. AC Milan is also not going away and some will argue they have just as rich a tradition as we do.

Last with the exception of the class of 92, which homegrown players are you referring to as the current squad and all key players have been purchased in the transfer market.

That is a good point shahram! The answer is probably no! But as u say, he's young, so there is hope! I actually think he's done well in the middle when he's been given a task.
During the first half of England's game v Montenegro, he had lots of opportunities to pass to oncoming attackers and not once did he pick them out.
However, I think the most worrying aspect is his lack of finishing. Let's hope he can work on that.

No argument with having squad players and if they come through our system even better as you said it cost us very little.

This whole thing started with me saying that I would take Lew over Welbeck if you believe lew is coming and The manager saying hernandez is not for sale. Even as squad player how is he going to get games if lew came on board and how does he develope sitting on the bench.

People seem to react overly anytime someone mentions a player upgrade as everyone has their favorites.

I respect your opinion Sharham. Just to clarify, Welbeck is far from a favourite of mine I just appreciate his contribution. If it were a straight swap with no other consoderations I'd take Lew all day long. But when you consider things like wages and willingness to sit on the bench I think it's a harder decision to make. I could only imagine Hernandez leaving to make way for Lew personally which makes SAF's comments all the more baffling to me, if true that is!

Hi all.
First post but long time reader.
I just wanted to say that today I am really disappointed by many united fans showing their disgrace at the way our team are playing and grinding out results. We had a huge upset last year that our noisey neighbours got one over us and took our crown.
Surely the sole target for the season was to take back what is ours. I agree we haven't been playing as fluid attacking football seen in seasons past but for a team re structuring and going through a transision period to be 15 points clear at the right end of the season cannot be seen as anything other than a successful season. SAF and his dedicated staff have done it again. We all know we need more flare and a few additions in the summer, especially in midfield. But I feel more "fans" need to show the team the backing they deserve after what has been a difficult season so far.
Rant over.

I completely agree and to be honest never thought we would win the league after watching another summer transfer window and no midfielders.

All in all delighted with where we are in the league and maybe in some ways the lack of signings last summer was that the manager thought that Anderson would come good this year and fletcher would be back.

From my posts everyone knows I am not wild about the way we play but again incredible achievement when you look at the table.

I do think the manager will make 2 midfield signings this summer and has finally made up his mind on the fringe players. He is very astute and can see what we are all seeing.

Say all you want about our midfield but I honestly think Carrick has been our best player this year and for me the best midfielder in the league. He was excellent today left and right foot, played some beautiful passes and when motd showed his passes again it actually shows you how talented he is. Just imagine if we had someone like Gotze in beside him or wilshere we would be destroying teams. But we can't just depend on him, he needs someone world class beside him.

I concur :)

I agree that Carrick has been our best player in terms of consistency all season. When this was mentioned a month or 2 back some people laughed it off and said RVP was clearly the most important player of the season. But, when RVP has been missing Hernandez and Rooney have stepped up with the goals whereas Carrick has provided a stellar service from our midfield that nobody else has managed to provide. In short, we would have been screwed without him.

So Carrick has been our best and most important player over the course of the season so far IMO.

I also agree we need to parnter him up with a quality player. However, Goetze is more of an attacking mid and Wilshere is unavailable for now. I think we should go for more of an all rounder like Strootman. Ideally we'd get Wanyama too then we'd have a bit of everything amongst our midfield options.

I Agree, game in game out he has been the best performer for the team. Has my vote.

So with the title all but sewn up and the FA cup still in the balance how does every feel the teams performed this year?

And what do you feel needs to happen next year to sort out the short comings this year?

Personally I feel the team could best be descibed as a machine this year, just grinding out results. We played well in spells and just about well enough at other times. We've fallen short in europe, and I feel the team is half way through a transition. We seem to be trying to change focus from wing play to being a more steady build up through the centre. This may be why our wingers have suffered abit this year. It's as obvious as day that we lack in the midfield area inorder to full play this way and have fallen back into old habits when push comes to shove and we need to get a result. I'm sure a lot of this new direction has come from a certain dutchman sitting on the bench not too far from Sir Alex. This could be a master stroke from the wily old Scot.

Now as to what I feel needs to happen to improve next season.

Well our goalkeeper has grown a lot this year and DDG should be our undisputed no. 1 from here on out, if this means Lindegaard wants to move on so be it. If he does I feel we should let Amos have the back up keeper spot, but I wouldn't be against bringing in an older keeper who's maybe at the end of his career to be back up and offer advice to David.

In defence there are a couple of issues but I think they are minor ones. I don't think we need a new CB, we have Rio Vidic Smalling Evans and Jones along with Micheal Keane making huge strides with his development. Even if Rio leaves I don't think we need anyone else, Smalling Jones and Evans need games and Vidic is still one of the best defenders in the world not to mention our captain. The defence needs to be settled in order to become more solid, it won't do this if we sign a 7th CB. First choice RB is settled with Rafael, but we don't really have an understudy/back up RB. Fabio could do this role but would he be happy with it? Left back keeps croping up in most peoples ideas of where to improve. And although I see Evra as a weakness in our defence I doubt we'll look to replace him this summer as we have other areas which need attention. Plus I think Fabio will stay for one more season and Buttner has been steadily improving this year and I think will be given a chance to prove himself. So all in all I can't see us signing anyone for our defence this summer, our main problems with our defence has been the lack of protection they get from the midfield not with the defenders themselves. I see us improving the midfield this summer then the defence the summer after when Rio Evra and possible Vidic could be departing.

Our Midfield has been the biggest cause for concern this year, Carrick has been Fantastic and I think we've asked/expected too much from Cleverley too soon. Anderson has been woeful after I had so much hope for him this season. Giggs has been good when played futher forward but a disaster when played deeper. Scholes has shown that unfortunately his legs have completely abandoned him and he seems to be struggling to recover from this latest injury. Poor poor Flecther has been cut down in his prime and looks like he will never be able to consistantly contribute to the team. Three of those six I feel will be leaving the playing staff this summer (Anderson, Scholes and Fletcher). Giggs will have to play a lesser role next season, which leaves us with just Carrick and Cleverley. This is why I feel we need two signings in midfield, and both need to add prescence and energy. The obvious two I would say are Strootman who has fantastic vision and passing with a great all round game and Wanyama who's physical strength and his reading of the game and his positioning are top notch and his passing and vision are better than expect for a DM. He can also drop into defence if needed. These two offer everything our current midfield lacks, are young enough and wouldn't cost the earth. Wanyama should settle in very easily to the Prem and Strootman looks built for the english game, plus with Buttner and RVP as team mates along with Rene on the coaching staff he shouldn't have too much trouble settling in. Powell couls also play apart next season, although i'd like to see him have a loan to a Prem team until January.
But midfield options of Carrick, Cleverley, Wanyama, Strootman, Giggs and Powell look much better than what we've had this year. And should give us the solid base on which to build our attacks and shield our defence.

Now our forwards is where it gets interesting, I personally consider a winger a forward which is why I haven't spoken of them until now. Obviously our wingers have struggle this year, a lot of this imo is down to the way we are trying to change our approach play, plus the injuries they have all suffered this season. Valencia is out of form and may not get it back, but he can do a job at RB if needed plus imo has enough credit to be given another season to over come his current injury issues. Nani for me is gone, he is too hit and miss and doesn't pull his weight when he isn't playing well which our other winger at least do. Young I feel is more a squad player, he can come on to change a game and offers a good set piece, his injuries have badly effected him this year, I would be tempted to keep him too. Zaha has signed and will be a great replacement for Nani whom he is 6 years younger than.
But I do feel what we are really lacking and have done for many a season is a left footed winger to offer some much needed veriaty to our play. There are a few options such as Rodriguez, Gaitan, Bale, Lamela, Di Maria and Griezmann. Now Bale doesn't wanna come and would cost too much, as would Rodriguez from what I hear. Di Maria may be available but whould be pricey but is proven at the highest level. Lamela looks a top young player but his contract situation is a mine field which might put us off. That leaves Gaitan and Griezmann as the most likely candidates, Griezmann is more of a risk so Gaitan maybe the one we end up with. I wouldn't consider this a problem though as he is a great player who could really kick on with us. Plus he would be cheaper now then a season or two ago.
The other issue we have is this Lewandowski link, it does seem to have some truth in it. Which I think indicates that we will be seeing a striker leave. Welbeck and RVP (obviously) signed contracts in the summer, and Rooney could leave but he seems to sit deeper than Lewandowski and as such does.
This leaves Hernandez, now Hernandez is one of my favourite players so I don't like the thought of selling him. For me he is the only other striker we have who you'd bank on scoring for us along wit RVP. But his style of play relies on quick counter attacking play, which seems to be a style we are trying to move away from to a more progressive style which requires the striker to be more involved with the build up play. A style much more suited to Lewandowski. As a result I wouldn't be suprised to see Hernandez make way for Lewandowski even if i'd prefer for us to keep the little Mexican.

So in summery I think we should sign Wanyama, Strootman, Gaitan and Lewandowski. (Although I would prefer Bale, Lamela, Rodriguez or Di Maria instead of Gaitan, I just can't see any of them joining though for one reason or another).

So what do you think?

Believable19 Unbelievable7

Great post Shappy. I have a question though. How has Gaitan been playing this season?

Agree5 Disagree1

If you could change Gaitan for Bale, Rodriguez or even Di Maria I'd be delighted with that summer. I've never been the biggest fan of Di Maria but he's impressed me of late and if Real sign Silva or Bale he may be available.

I think we'll probably only sign 1 midfielder but I would also hope to sign both Strootman & Wanyama if it were down to me. Those 2 plus Carrick, Cleverly, Powell & Giggs would be very good options.

I'd like us to buy a quality LB but like you I think we will make do with what we've got for 1 more year.

Gaitan hasn't played as well this season as he had last season, but this isn't down to a lack of talent. I think he is stagnating in the relatively poor Portugese league, I also think he had his head turned last summer with all the big name clubs being linked to him and as such he maybe struggling to motivate himself this season. But this does play into our hands, first off other teams will be less interested in him now, and he will have another year less on his contract. So we should be able to pick him up for much less than was quoted last year. We have had scouts at Benfica games this season, the press are assuming it's to watch Garay. But it could well still be Gaitan we are watching.

I would prefer it to be one of Bale, Rodriguez, Lamela or Di Maria but they will be hard to get this summer.

Bale has turned us down once, and has been dismisive of Manchester. He has stated he wants to either go to Spain or stay at Spurs. So he isn't interested in playing for us, plus Levy would expect us to pay at least 50m and he won't budge on his valuation with us.

Porto are being just as ridiculas with Rodriguez, they want 40m and wouldn't consider anything less than 35m. Which is too much for an unproven young player.

Lamela has a very complex owner ship issue with Roma owning 35% of him with two other companies also owning a percentage of him. Its made trying to set up a deal for him almost impossible as you need to agree with THREE sellers who all have differing valuations of him. Its why many clubs have backed away from a deal.

Di Maria is probably the most attainable out of the four, but Madrid will want to recoup as much money possible. This will be the same a Van Der Vaart who was available to us or any big club for 18m but sold to a lesser club late in the window for 8m. I can't see us playing silly games with Madrid over such an expensive signing. Plus he is on a very high wage and would want us to at least match it.

So for differing reasons I think all of them are out of reach this summer. For me Gaitan then is the best available option, although I would be happy for any other suggestions of better left footed wingers out there.

I don't agree on the Gaitan part with you Shappy. I watch my fair bit of Portugese football. Gaitan is a talented footballer, no doubt about that. Good dribbler, good vision, and one hell of a left foot. He is too good for the liga sagres and ready for a step up, but Manchester United is a step too far. I see him as an Athletico/ Napoli/ Tottenham player. He is neither young enough nor accomplished enough to reach world-class status imo and is on the same level as Ashley Young when he joined us.

And a thing about Ferguson, he doesn't like settling. Ferguson picks out his targets and if he can't get one of them, he doesn't usually go for the second best thing. Right now if we are looking for a left footed winger, Ferguson probably has 2/3 players in his mind. Imo it would be Bale, Rodriguez and Lamela, in that order. If we fail to get one of them, I don't think Fergy would settle for Gaitan or anyone else. He would wait for the next transfer window, possibly waiting for the next big thing to emerge. Or maybe carefully push an academy player to the first team ( Barmby is the most obvious choice for a left footed attacker ). The same thing has been going on in midfield for quite some time. We failed to get Martinez but we didn't go for a less good alternative ( Capoue? ). This season Bender and Wanyama have both come up leaps and bounds from last season, while Strootman is inproving by the minute. Other players have also come out of nowhere and may be possible targets. Jordie Classie, Gonalons, Maher, Badlej. are all very good midfielders with lots of potential.

I also think it would be massive if we can get both Strootman and Wanyama.

Strootman, at 22 years old, is the vice captains for one of the biggest footballing teams in the world. He is captaining the liies of Van der Vaart, Van Persie, Robben and co. That should tell you just how highly rated he is. And a leader in the middle of the pitch is just what the doctor perscribed! He is a great passer, outmuscles 99% of his opponents despite not beeing the biggest of players, has a fabtastic engine and is an extremly smart player. He will be Carrick's long term replacement and will even be better than our current player of the season ( imo ).

As for Wanyama, he is the nearest thing to Yaya Toure you'd ever find. Physically speaking, one of the strongest players in the world with great pace and good engine. He is also not too shabby on the ball, decent passer, a threat from corners and has a cracking shot on him. A midfield powerhouse.

a central midfield of Strootman and Wanyama would probably become the most fearsome double pivot in Europe. We would absolutely bully any team facing us.

A summer of Wanyama, Strootman, Rodriguez/ Lamela woukd be massive. If we are to lose Rooney, Goetze woukd be his ideal replacement. I would also love to get Lewandowski next season on free transfer. Van Persie would be pushing 30 and we woukd have given Hernandez and Welbeck more time to prove themselves.

I'm sure Bale said something along the lines of he wouldn't wanna play for us Liverpool or the bitters as he doesn't like the north west. It was a while ago though, maybe even last season. {Ed004's Note - Shappu surprised you didn't mention Ozil. Ferguson has looked at him before, he suits the fluid play you are talking about, left footed and Real are about to spend a lot this summer and need to raise funds by the looks of it.}

31 Mar 2013 12:21:43
Mick, I know what you mean by Sir Alex not normally taking second best if he can't get his first choice but Gaitan was one of his choices last season but Benfica wanted too much for him. This wouldn't be the case this time round. I also agree that Gaitan is in that group of players who just fall short of world class.
But I feel our need this year could mean we have to sign a player who wasn't first choice. It looks like Nani will be sold, Kagawa is much better more centrally which just leaves Young to play on the left. We are in desperate need for someone who plays on the left, and we'll continue to be lopsided and predictable in attack until this is sorted. That is why I feel we have to bring someone in this summer. I know Griezmann is highly rated in Spain, have you seen much of him? I don't think Barmby is anywhere near ready and to play him next season would do him more harm than good.

The only other option I could see us doing if we don't get a left footed winger is if we sign Lewandowski and play a front three of Welbeck Lewandowski and RVP with Lewandowski up top with Welbeck and RVP as inside forward either side of him. With either Rooney or Kagawa in the hole behind them with a midfield two of any two of Carrick, Cleverley, Wanyama or Strootman.

Young and Zaha could cover Welbeck and RVP with Hernandez cover for Lewandowski. This would leave no place for Valencia in this kind of set up though. He could be moved to full back as cover for Rafael as an option. This way we could cope without a left footed wide player. And it only requires us signing three players (Lewandowski, Wanyama and Strootman). {Ed004's Note - Who would you play out right Shappy if you got gaitan though? Valencia doesn't suit this style of play}

Agree8 Disagree0

Ed 004, can we realistically but Ozil? If I recall correctly he snubbed us before joining Madrid didn't he? If he is to move I suspect Bayern Munich would be his favourite destination imo and beeing worldclass and all, Bayern woukd definetly be interested.

Mick {Ed004's Note - We should still compete for him he is a fantastic player}

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Mar 2013 12:33:52
I would consider Ozil, but he is much more a central player rather than a inside forward of winger. For me he is a futher developed left footed version of Kagawa, who can do a role out wider but is best played behind the striker in a more central position. If we were looking to replace Rooney then Ozil would be top of my list. But where would we play him in a team with Kagawa and Rooney? The idea of Ozil Rooney and Kagawa playing behind RVP looks exciting on paper but we have no one who would look to go wide and around teams thus making us very one dimensional. I feel we need someone who has the ability to cut inside or go around the outside to give us that unpredictable nature which makes teams fear you. {Ed004's Note - The full backs. If you signed Baines then Rafael and Baines are capable of getting to the byline and a few times this season I've seen both Kagawa and Ozil get to the byline}

Agree6 Disagree0

31 Mar 2013 12:41:33
Ed, if we got Gaitan then we'd have Welbeck and Zaha who suit this style of play, Young and Kagawa as well as Rooney could play on the right as well as RVP if we had Lewandowski playing up top. We have plenty of players who can play on the right but a serious lack of players who can play on the left. The fact that the best left wing performance i've seen from one of our players this year has come from a 39yo Ryan Giggs just shows how desperate we are for a good lefty. {Ed004's Note - I don't think any of them suit the right wing except Zaha}

Agree6 Disagree0

31 Mar 2013 13:06:10
Its not a traditional right wing position though is it? Old stlye wingers are dying out with inside forwards the way the wind seems to be blowing atm. Welbeck is a very good inside forward, its his best position imo. Young can also do a good job there. And Zaha I think will suprise a few people next season. The fact remains we have more players who can do a good job on the right then we have who can on the left. This needs to addressed if we are to kick on next season.

Agree5 Disagree0

31 Mar 2013 13:20:51
Well Shappy Griezmann is quite a player. As much of an old fashion winger as you would find in La Liga. He can play centrally or on the right and he has a good crossing ability. He is also a very hard worker. If I had to compare him to someone I would say a less strong Valencia able to play through the middle.

Since he's french I tend to watch him a lot and I can safetly say he's nowhere near good enough for us. Same as Gaitan imo, but younger and not as good.

The only player I would buy from Sociedad is their defensive midfielder Illaramendi. He's a bit like Schneiderlin, 23 years old and a fantastic tackler.

If Rooney is to be sold, there is no better alternative. He has the ability to cut defensives wide open like a knife through butter. Although i'm not sure he wants to join us, which is a shame.

I also think a left footed player is not a must. With Carrick and hopefully Strootman protecting the defense, This will give our full backs more room to attack. Buttner is more than capable of guetting on the byline and producing a dangerous cross and so is Rafael. Also with GIggs still in the team, he could come in during the 2nd half if we are in need of a left footed player.

Mick

Ed004, did you see his England U21 goal? I was thinking this a couple of days ago, but could Zaha be an option from the left? His goal could suggest he is more than capable playing there. Good to know about Greizmann, I don't watch much la liga. I agree with a lot of what you say but still feel a left footed forward player would add a lot to our team. But I could see us playing with Welbeck and RvP in the slightly wider roles with Lewandowski up top with Kagawa or Rooney playing in the hole. I think that could work really well, especially if you get Welbeck and RvP to keep swtiching sides. We would just need a stronger midfield.
