Who's everyone's favourite player? Mines is rafael! Quality player turning in to a world star!

Caolán. {Ed007's Note - Phil Jones for me.}

Believable14 Unbelievable7

Paul Scholes, closely followed by Welbeck for some reason. Not sure why.

Hoppy

Agree0 Disagree0

I like smalling, rafael and anderson equally.

JK92

Agree1 Disagree0

Smalling/rafael/RVP for me.

In previous years it was King Eric, then Keane/Ole, then Ronny.

Strange thing for me personally is I played as a left wing/striker, I'm 29 & my favourite players growing up were Van Basten/Ronaldo/Hagi, and I watched videos of Best/Maradona/Puskas/Di Stefano/Socrates/Muller/Zico etc

Point is always watched attackers yet 2 of my favourites are defenders?!

Moog {Ed007's Note - Roy Keane is not only my favourite Utd player ever, he is my overall favourite player of all time.}

Always had a soft spot for Ando to be honest. Shame about the injuries, but i can't help thinking we've not allowed him to become the player he was destined to be!

Agree1 Disagree1

Rafael.

Percy

Agree0 Disagree0

He's not in best of form but his dedication and humility are refreshing: Antonio Valencia

Agree0 Disagree0

Welbeck & Cleverley England's new hope. Great understanding together.

TJ

Agree0 Disagree0

Rafa & kagawa
saj

Agree0 Disagree0

Carrick has been too consistent for me and 2007-08 season proves he is world class
UNITEDABHISHEK

Agree0 Disagree0

Not to sound like an a** kiss but i agree with ed007,jones for me,he's the future captain of united in my eye's,he's got that aura about him,Keane is also my favourite player of all time, his no-nonsence and channeled aggression was awe inspiring, there were no grey areas with that man, your never see a finer captain, joeyored

Agree0 Disagree1

Ando. He plays the game with a smile rather than a scowl or pout like most of them.
Evans because its always nice to see a local lad do well at the biggest club in the world, and
RVP. He makes the game look easy, and he's a truly world class player in an age when mediocrity and average is considered top class.

StevieK

Agree0 Disagree0

It used to be Valencia but now changed to Van Persie.

He is a class act.

Giants14

Agree0 Disagree0

Hernandez hands down, work rare, attitude, class movement and a hunger to score goals.

Agree1 Disagree0

Are you sure Percy?!?

Cooper

Agree0 Disagree0

David de gea

Agree1 Disagree0

All time Roy Keane. Currently Vidic, Carrick,Rafael.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

This season RVP and Rafael in no particular order, closely followed by Rooney. Smalling has made a great comeback after such a long time out

Although Rooney hasn't always been on fire he makes a big difference when he is out the team. And has good as he is I think he is wasted in midfield. Hope he stays up top with RVP

Agree0 Disagree0

Hernandez, when I see him smiling it reminds me how much he loves this club. But to be honest I love all of our players.

-JakeW

Agree0 Disagree0

Current faves Chico and Evans.

Past faves Robson, Whiteside, Scholes, Kancheskis, Cantona, Sparky, Andy Cole/Dwight York partnership.

Im fond of De Gea

Agree0 Disagree0

I can't just pick one, there are too many!
Rafael, Nani (when he's on form) and Vidic/Hernandez.

Christiano, Scholes and van der Sar out of the relatively recent old guard.

Covey

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney. Also have huge respect for smalling, jones, rafael, cleverley and welbeck. But out of the legends, it has to be Scholesy, has to be!

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Valencia because of his attitude and ability to come back stronger each time he gets injured and Anderson who bring a ronaldinho-esque attitude with a permanent smile on his face.

And in the past i used to like my fellow frenchman Cantona and of course Roy Keane.

Mick

Agree0 Disagree0

Smalls and Rafa are the ones I have the most admiration for as they have clearly shown the correct amount of dedication and application to make the steps they have and are now considered borderline world class in their positions.

Plus we have helped in that progress which shows if they are the correct type of person and are willing to do the work we can still pick gems up and polish them into diamonds.

Favourite in the current team hmmm difficult. I could go Nani or Evra haha no chance.

Smalls or Toni easily.

Younger ones I like W Keane and really hope Blackett pushes through.

Favourite in SAF times Big Pete, Keane and Blomqvist.

Jono

Agree1 Disagree0

Anderson doesn't smile...... its called gasping!

Jono

Agree0 Disagree1

David De Gea for me. Then Rooney, RVP and Vidic. But before it used to be CR7

Cleverley, Anderson and Rafa

PerthDave

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney!

Agree0 Disagree0

Darren Fletcher,Paul Sacoles,Chris Smalling and David Da Gae.

kdevil10

Agree0 Disagree0

RVP for me.

Favourite of all time is Frank Stapleton, remember watching him as a kid and just wanted to be him.

Barry

Agree0 Disagree0

Very interesting reading there, and also quite surprised by the amount of Anderson's! Like him, and has been unlucky with injuries, but to name his your fav player at present is crazy!

Roooooooooooney for me, second Vidic

Grubbo

Agree0 Disagree1

Rvp present, robbo past

parkie mufc

Agree0 Disagree0

Carrick, without Carrick in the starting 11 we dont keep the ball. Feel safe when Carrick is there

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm torn between Rafael and Smalling.
Rafael has come on in leaps and bounds this year. His commitment to the cause is astounding and the growing up he has done since being sent off against munich (at that moment i will freely admit i said this kid is a liability and has more chance of getting sent off than putting in a great shift) is incredible.

As for smalling his attitude and work rate are second only to maybe hernandez, right now he would be picked on my team sheet and yet when he does come on when given the chance he plays for the team there's no ego with him. Good with the ball at his feet, positional awareness is outstanding for his age.

With these two players our defence is looking very strong for the coming years.

United We Stand...

Agree0 Disagree0

Ryan giggs all day long. True united legend!!

Robin van sexy has bin awesome.

Also Gary Neville, I played right back when I was younger so he was the man I looked to. Most underrated crosser of the ball in English football.

Joe.a

Agree0 Disagree0

For me its Hernandez he always gives his all.
RVP has been amazing since he joined he seems like a really intelligent guy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hernandez out of the current squad and Solskjaer out of our history, the supersubs.

APC

Agree0 Disagree0

Chicarito

19-20 MUFC

Agree0 Disagree0

Anderson for me, with Vidic and Hernandez a close 2nd / 3rd

Favourite of all time: Solskjaer

Ianskip

Agree0 Disagree0

Scholes by a country mile, also like Chicarito

Out of the newer crop coming through I like the look of Buttner and Powell

Agree0 Disagree0

Simple - georgie is the greatest ever !

Agree0 Disagree0

As a little kid there was Law, Best and Charlton. Though at Primary school I always pretended to be Bobby Charlton.
So I guess Charlton is my all time fav. He is Mr Manchester United.
Giggs, Scholes, Ronaldo in recent history. Of the present team Rooney, the teams heartbeat. 2nd the much maligned Nani. 3rd De Gea for his bravery and attitude. To come to a massive club like United,in a different country, with a different language and start with a few bad mistakes would have finished most people.Yet the 21 year old goalkeeper, just put his head down, believed in his ability and came back. He is an excellent goalkeeper and once he sorts out his hestation on crosses, will become one of the very, very best.
Mik

Agree0 Disagree0

One for our older readers.... RALPH MILNE lol

Halesini

Agree0 Disagree0

I actually think the original post was referring to our favourite player now but will give you my fave current and all-time hero.

1213 season - Van Persie. Pure class and outshining Rooney now in terms of impact though our favourite scouser's work-rate and dedication to the United cause is second to none.

All time - christ there are so many legends at the club. I cant comment on the likes of Georgie Best and Charlton as never saw them play live.

Robson, Hughes, Schmeichel, Keane, Beckham, Scholes, and Shagger Giggs will feature on many lists but for me Old Trafford's only ever had one King.

Cue La Marseilleise........

Agree0 Disagree0

Allways Scholes!

Ed, can you confirm that Nani was available in summer 2011 and this previous summer?

G.A.G.U.S {Ed007's Note - Yes GAGUS, he was.}

Believable12 Unbelievable3

That will hardly persuade Percy, im afraid.

Mick

G.A.G.U.S

Agree1 Disagree0

United officials met with Juventus officials at OT in June/July 2011, but a fee couldn't be agreed and Nani did not want to leave. In August 2012 Nani and his Mendes met with Zenit officials on numerous occasions after United accepted a 27m euro offer, but Nani's demands were unrealistic according to the Zenit president.

To be fair to Percy I think this could be the reason Nani hasn't been is usual excellent self for 18 months. How would you feel if the club you wanted to stay with didn't want you?

Sydney!

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't see the logic behind this!
Nani was really stepping out of Ronaldo's shadow and into his own in the 10/11 season.
He carried the team for 9 months while Rooney was injured/out of form and dropped off at the end of the season, probably being burned out.

But then again the same happened to Berbatov who was outstanding during Rooney's layoff.

I'd be pretty pissed if I was Nani and performed like that and be touted around Europe without having any desire to leave.

IF this really is the case, then we might have to blame the club/SAF for not winning the league last season, since Nani in the form of 10/11 would surely have sealed the deal for us.

Jonny8

Agree1 Disagree1

To be fair Jonny Valencia pulled us through last year more than Nani ever could have.

Agree0 Disagree2

I'm not saying I know people in the know but I've heard before that after a good performance Nani thinks he's " the man " - rests on his laurels etc - polar opposite of Ronaldo.

His decision making seems to have regressed as well. No doubting his talent & ability, but it's too few & far between. He might have won us games in the past, but tends to cost us more in the last year.

Moog

Agree0 Disagree0

I knew full well that he was available this summer, I just wasn't convinced that he was in 2011. I'll accept I was wrong, what a bizarre decision to make though.

"Oh, he's been sensational for the past 12 months and has easily been our best player this season. Tell you what we'll do! We'll sell him!"

Percy

Agree0 Disagree0

GAGUS mate, you sound like the teacher's pet. Tell him Ed, tell him :)

StevieK

Agree0 Disagree1

DJ

Agree0 Disagree1

Massively overrated. All he is about is pace and if he only wants to play in the centre he will be average at best. We dont even need to replace him with another player. Kagawa, Valencia, Young and Rooney can all play out wide. Have to use that money for Wanyama IMO.

Reports today are that Nani will off loaded in Jan and the funds will be used to go towards Jan bids for Rodriguez & Wayanama, Aresnal thought to be interested in Nani so that would keep things sweet after the RVP signing...

Believable35 Unbelievable9

That would be amazing. Struggling to see it being likely but we can hope. The biggest stumbling block isn't the fee, its just the fact that they are cup tied - SAF really dislikes this even though they can play in the FA Cup and EPL to bed into the side.

Fresh!

Agree0 Disagree0

I suspect these 2 players would be top of the list come next summer. As much as I would love sir Alex to add them to the squad during the january window they are cup tied and can't remember if at all the last time we bought a cup tied player in January. I think the only situation we possibly may go for them in January is if another club made a bid and forced our hand. We can but dream!

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Dec 2012 10:52:26
I do think a midfielder will come in January, especially considering that Andersons injury looks worse than first suspected,(shame that, but same old story again, just not in the right physical condition), I really hope it is not Wanyama, he has all the finesse and guile of a Shire horse. Cabaye would fit in our team perfectly as would Moutinho, Utd could land either one of these two players, the effect would be immediate and positive.

Irwin's boots

Agree1 Disagree0

I was of the understanding that wanyama would not be cup tied, i may be wrong.... we all know we need a ball winner in midfield and he pops up with a few goals too.
I would like to see Nani out, Bains and Wanyama in for January, and Lewendowski and Rodriguez in the summer.
Flyhalfmitch.

Agree1 Disagree0

How would he not be Cup tied? He plays for Celtic who are in the knock out phase of the Champions League.

You havent watched him much I take it Irwin?

IrishRed

Agree1 Disagree0

I thought i read somewhere that you can have one player that has played in the group stages and until he has played in the knockout stage he would be eligible. like i said, i may be wrong.
Flyhalfmitch.

Agree1 Disagree0

Flyhalfmitch i think you are right......

1 player can definately play as long as they havent already played in the knockout stages

Robbo

Agree0 Disagree0

I have just looked on cup tied rules, and we can sign a player who has played in the first 3 rounds of the champions league (group stages) and he would be eligible to play in the knockout stages (THIS BIT IS IMPORTANT) as long as his previous club have been eliminated from the knockout stage........ so in short Wanyama WOULD be cup tied as Celtic are still in the competition.
Flyhalfmitch.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd be surprised if Nani dod not leave in Jan - so interesting to see if he brings in cover for him. I'd prefer Strootman over Wanyama so cant see that happening in Jan.

Agree0 Disagree0

The is no way Arsenal would buy Nani his wages alone would stop that transfer...never heard anything so preposterous.... Nani wants 130k per week

Pardoe

Agree0 Disagree0

I would honestly cry tears of joy if we got Rodriguez...

Agree0 Disagree0

Fergie wont sell Nani in January if he is serious about the Champions League campaign

Agree0 Disagree0

It's worth considering Bilbao and PSV players for January as they're eligible for CL (out of Europa League):
Strootman
Willems
De Marcos
Muniain
Herrera
Llorente

Plus Baines & Fellaini of Everton.

The following are cup-tied:
Rodriguez and Alex Santos (Porto)
Hummels, Lewandowski et al (Dortmund)
Walcott (Arsenal)
Wanyama (Celtic)

Agree1 Disagree0

If you also look at those who have bowed out of CL group stages, there's some real talent worth pursuing to help us to claim CL glory on home soil:

Halilovic & Kovacic (Zagreb)
Belhanda & Mbiwa (Montpellier)
Fischer & Eriksen (Ajax)
Ola John & Gaitan (Benfica)

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the leagues priority this season

Hey ed002,with ince looking more likely to sign for Liverpool in January,have united got any chance of bringing Walcott/Zaha in?preferably Zaha even if he goes back on loan.you said a midfielder might come in do you think it could be strootman?or is that more likely to happen in the summer?thanks ed's great work on the site {Ed002's Note - Manchester United and Liverpool are the two clubs who have looked to Ince. I know nothing of interest from MU in Walcott. Zaha might be an option if Rodrigues is not viable and Palace are willing to sell - but there will be interest from Arsenal as well. See the answer to Syd about Strootman.}

Believable5 Unbelievable4

I really hope we don't sign Walcott or Zaha. How are we supposed to compete with the best in Europe with players like that? walcott is a mid table prem player and the hype surrounding Zaha is ridiculous, if he becomes world class I will eat my skiddy pants.

Snakey

Agree0 Disagree2

Before dreaming of so nd so.. We should ask ourself " is he any batter "
I guess ince and brady fall in same braket..
Rodio17

Agree1 Disagree0

Seems a bit weird that Liverpool would have to look at Ince. I'd expect Liverpool to know all about Ince seeing as he was there up until a short time ago. But then again Liverpool let him go for next to nothing so what do they know.

Ed, I think it was 002, you seem to think that Lewandowski is highly likely. A great signing, someone we'd be silly to pass up on. However what impact do you think this has on the futures of Welbeck or Hernandez? And also do you think we'll still go in for a winger to replace Nani, or would Nani's replacement be Lewandowski? Makes for quite an interesting debate I think as there would be such quality in our team going forward that one or two may have to be sacrificed.

Fresh! {Ed002's Note - I would doubt I used the words "highly likely" but Old Trafford is a possible destination. This will not be what determines the future of Welbeck and Hernandez. Their future will be determined by performances and their desire for a starting place or acceptance of a role as a squad player.}

Believable1 Unbelievable2

Lewandowski coming in would allow United to loan W.Keane & Henriquez to a Championship team 2013-14 then a Prem the season after. RVP will be 32 then I'd we'd be able to get 8m or more still for him.

TJ

Agree0 Disagree2

United are not a selling club and do not look for players with potential sell on values. I could quite easily see RVP staying until he's in his mid thirties if he keeps his fitness and is still banging in the goals. United just look for good talent when it becomes available. Lewandowski would fit that bill.

I would expect Macheda and Bebe to go regardless by the summer. Henriquez will go out on loan in Jan or summer, Bebe will be sold (if a buyer can be found), and then Nani will probably move on as well (and surprisingly probably get more than they bought him for).

If Ed002 is about, is there any news on players that United have an interest in? We are approaching that time of the year. I do not expect much to happen in January if anything, but have you heard any whispers? Thanks.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - There is nothing particularly to be said to this time Syd. However, a decision is going to likely be forced regarding a midfield player. Whilst I suspect that Manchester United and Arsenal both remain interested in Wanyama but reluctant to pay the sort of figure Celtic will be looking for in January, given that Begiristain has hinted that Manchester City are considering making a bid for the player as well, one or both might be tempted to try and tempt Celtic to sell and the player to drop his Champions League ambitions for the rest of the season. The other player to consider would be Strootman and the need to take a decision as interest is growing from elsewhere.}

Believable4 Unbelievable0

Thanks Ed, can I ask who have recently upped their interest in Strootman? Is AC Milan preparing a bid? Thanks.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - It is Milan.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Thanks Ed, I know you do not like talking about money, but what sort of fee would Strootman command? £10m-£12m? Thanks again.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - Is that the fee with VAT, agent fees, VAT on agent fees, relocation fees, exchange rate compensation, signing on fees - or something else?}

Agree0 Disagree0

To quote Bruce Wayne. Its all a bit technical. Right Ed002? ;)

REDFAITH

Agree0 Disagree0

Just transfer fee please Ed ;)

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - No idea Syd.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed002, just thought I'd ask as sometimes you know the exact amount a player will cost. Does this mean Eriksen could be a possibility if AC win the race to sign Strootman?

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - They are unrelated transfers Syd.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed, I guess it would rule AC out of the running for Eriksen? Unless AC are planning a big spend this summer to deal with Juventus' emergence.

Sydney! {Ed002's Note - Milan are able to have interest in more than one player.}

A lot of people seem to think Rodriguez is a left winger, from what I have seen this season he has played behind the striker, on the left and also on the right. He would be the perfect replacement for Nani because he can also give competition for Valencia while he plays on the left.

My ideal replacement for Nani.

-JakeW

Believable28 Unbelievable1

Rodriguez is naturally a left winger and played there his whole career and then obviously Porto sold Hulk in the summer so they have had utilise him differently. He is a phenomenal talent and is up there with Eden Hazard and Neymar as the next generation of big stars... He has been in incredible form this season too. If we bought him I would want him on the right, Kagawa on the left and Rooney behind RVP.

Agree0 Disagree0

Kagawa, rooney, rod behind rvp.....

they can play whereever they like...

they would be awesum

Agree1 Disagree0

Should we really want to play Kagawa, Rooney and another more central player behind RVP, we will need two strong DMs behind them.
and I mean great, no Carrick, no Cleverly, no Anderson etc.
Rafael and Evra will have to bomb forward to offer width, since none of the attacking mids will offer any, and this means we will need to strong def mids to cover the CBs or we will be leaking goals even worse then now!

I often read on here that Fergie's successor will depend on variables etc. but it wont.

If there's one thing I can guarantee, it's that Fergie's successor has been nailed on (from both sides of the dotted like) for at least a year or two.

It won't depend on whether Fergie leaves this yead, next year or then after, it's all set and ready.

My money is on Mourinho, it just has to be. He's the only man "BIG" enough so to speak.

MPez

Believable9 Unbelievable17

So you believe there's a manager out there (possibly Mourinho) who is willing to take over WHENEVER Fergie feels like giving up? Would he just stay at Real until he gets the nod or if he leaves in the summer just stay jobless and wait for the call?

G

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Dec 2012 00:35:16
With this constant Lewandowski speculation and reported interest. Does anybody think he could come in as a 4th striker. And Fergie has planned for Rooney to drop into midfield. Providing he'd do that?

Andy S

Believable9 Unbelievable13

Would rather get a proper midfielder, Rooney is best up front. Lewandowski will join, but someone if going to be leaving.. Welbeck? Hernandez? Or even Rooney.

-JakeW

Agree0 Disagree0

I thought this same thing, we need a midfielder but constantly being linked to strikers (in particular lewandowski) that maybe Rooney will move further back. After all has anyone noticed how important his tracking back and defending has been in the last couple of seasons?! He will stay with Paul Scholes day and night until he becomes the complete midfielder.

Ozwald

Agree1 Disagree0

Why the hell would that happen? Rooney is 10x the striker Lewi is in the same postition. Why is everybody obsessed with buying another striker?! We need a defensive midfielder, and a left-footed winger. That is it.

Agree1 Disagree0

Well i'm not the one linking us to the strikers. I'm just highlighting the fact we're being linked to strikers and coming up with a possible outcome if we do get Lewandowski. I didn't state whether I totally agree with it or not, personally i'd like to see a defensive midfielder and that left footed player. But running with what's being touted is the logical thing to do no?!

Andy S

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney is a better forward than Lew IMO

And there are far better CM'ers out there than Rooney IMO

So a backwards step for me, can't see why we need Lewandowski and in fact can't imagine him and RVP striking a good partnership?! I'd rather RVP up front on his own with Rooney or Kagawa just tucked in behind him

G

Agree0 Disagree0

Rooney will become cm, van Persie up with Lewandoski probably Kagawa slotting behind. IF Lewandoski even signs, cant say till confirmed.

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Dec 2012 23:38:59
Why is anyone against getting Walcott for dirt cheap?? He is not a replacement for Nani he does not play on the left he would be sufficient cover for Valencia and would supply good competition with him as we have only one right sided midfielder as we have seen recently with Rooney or Welbeck having to play there.... Nani will be replaced by a left sided player like Muniain, Rodriguez someone of that calibre... Imo it is either Walcott, Ince or Zaha and Walcott for me is far better than them (even though I do not rate him highly) Anyone who says having Walcott at the club r signing Walcott clearly does not see we need another winger and Valencia does to shift him back in gear.

Believable5 Unbelievable14

Nani doesn't play on the left. Okay, very occasionally but then Walcott could be brought in to replace him. W

Agree0 Disagree0

Because we won't go out and buy a Right winger AND Left winger, as well as the CB and LB we need. We will only buy one winger IMO, hopefully one that can cover both sides
