Ok, I really have no idea if there is anything to this, but I'll share it anyway.

I have just heard from a friend that Utd are not really after Fabregas at all, but that this is a smokescreen. Apparently Barca have been looking at Bilbao's Ander Herrera as a backup, the Fabregas bid has been made to focus their attention there while Utd swoop for Herrera. However Herrera will not be the main midfield signing, but more of a squad improvement. He and Cleverly will be the main depth in midfield behind Carrick and a mystery signing.

Now this sounds like some wild conclusion jumping to me, but I haven't even seen Herrera play in over a year so I don't really know. Perhaps someone who knows more about Spanish football could shed some light?

I remember we were interested in him about 2 seasons ago? Along with supposedly half the rest of the Bibao team! Weren't we supposed to be heavily interested in Oscar de Marcos too?

I'm just thinking IF there is meant to be a prolific midfield signing, who could it be? Modric? Can't think who else would be a realistic target.

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree1

After I posted this I called my friend back to check this as it sounds a nit far-fetched.

He is adamant this is real, andhe expanded his earlier comments, saying that the idea of the Fabregas bid is to get Barca making public statements about Fabregas being important etc so that Herrera realizes he'll be warming the bench at Barca, and accepts our offer instead. Not sure that would work, but I have seen stranger things happen.

Thorne

Agree0 Disagree0

Why do people keep thinking clubs make bids too distract from there real targets and what selling team would never want to get one of there players into a bidding war between two of the biggest teams in the world

Agree0 Disagree0

At first I thought u meant Héctor Herrera who moved to Porto, who we were linked to a few month back.
KevDarko

Agree0 Disagree1

That makes some sense but on the other hand it will make the fans and the player himself think that UTD have had to accept second best.

Stew4d

Agree2 Disagree0

So what your saying is that Barca want him. Then you say that Barca want him as a back up to Cesc but they want us to buy him instead. That makes total logic lol

Melwing28

Agree0 Disagree1

I think this kind off really shows what's going on the background with teams like Manchester United these days because our budget seems to always be quite tight compared to other big clubs, and we now resort to using fake interest in Fabregas to buy a player who was targeted as a signing for Barcelona. So to be honest I don't know much of Herrera so I don't know maybe he's a young future star or like already in his 20's and playing well but needs I move to a bigger club to progress in his career, so that's why Manchester United want to baffle Barcelona into keeping focus on fabregas and then swoop in for Herrera in the back while Barca are busy with keeping Fabregas.

Thoughts?

Agree0 Disagree0

I did say it sounded a bit far-fetched!

I don't have "insider knowlege" that some claim to have or anything, but I heard something which I hadn't seen on here, so I thought I'd share it. As I said I haven't seen him play in over a year (last time I saw him it was Martinez I was watching for, as I still thought we might get him), but I thought someone more knowledgeable about Spanish football might know more.

-stew4d

Not necessarily, if we were bidding for him at the same time. Anyway, people think the management are going after impossible targets so they can say there is no value etc. This is a model of reason by comparison.

-melwing

No, I mean Barca and utd both want him as backup, but utd want Barca to publicly back Fabregas so Herrera feels he's better off coming here.

Thorne

Agree0 Disagree2

This is not aimed at the OP but the people that believe it.

There have been some crazy comments on here recently, the worse coming from those that believe United bid for players to 'trick' fans into buying season tickets. What planet are you on? We have a season ticket waiting list and could sell out OT twice over most games, whether we sign anyone or not.

And now we're making bids which are meant to trick one of the best clubs in the world so they don't go for another of our targets? Haha, how gullible do you have to be, to believe these things? Ask yourself, would you rather have Fabregas or Harrera? Yes, Moyes' answer will be exactly the same. What do you think will happen if Barca accept the first bid? Do you think we will turn around and say "sorry, we were just using this bid as a cover up, thanks but no thanks"? Of course there is genuine interest in Fabregas, we've put our money where our mouth is, bid for the creative midfielder EVERYONE agrees we need, but the nay-sayers still try to turn that into a negative. It's not a cover up, it's the first step of negotiations and the reason it's been announced is because the club has been floated and these things have to be made public. Note - the same reason we should know we did NOT bid for Thiago, did NOT bid for Strootman and have NOT yet bid for Garay.

Wazza

Agree1 Disagree0

We really couldn't sell Old Trafford out for most games. We struggle to sell out for every game now as the Police figures showed last season.

Agree0 Disagree1

FYI:

I asked about Barca being interested in Herrera over on the Barca page. According to the ed who answered, Herrera was being looked at but interest was put on hold as Fabregas seems to have thought Herrera was being lined up to replace him. This may have been what triggered Utd's bid.

When I asked if Herrera was likely to be the main target if Fabregas does leave, the same ed said it looks likely.

Thorne

Agree0 Disagree0

Man utd are intrested in him. End of story no smoke screen.

Reports arsenal, city and Chelsea are also in for fabergas

Believable46 Unbelievable16

Doesn't matter who is in for him- he isn't going anywhere.

Move on.

He will only leave Barcalona if they want to sell him. I f baraca do want to sell then there is only one place Fabregas will be going and that's United. He won't go back to Arsenal has they can't compete for the premiership, he won't go to Chelsea out of respect for the arsenal fans and he won't go to city because he sees United has the bigger club plus van the man is at united and they are good friends and the prospect of linking back up with his friend would be to good an opportunity to turn down

M. U. F. C Salford

Agree3 Disagree9

Chelsea have enough midfielders

Agree5 Disagree0

I'm optimistic as it is unusual for Untied to make an offer without being fairly sure the move will take place.
Could just be Cesc not wanting to alienate the fans if it doesn't come off, or the fact he will get a juicy loyalty bonus if he is sold 'against his will'.
Same reason could be behind the fact Rooney has not submitted a transfer request.
AJK

Agree1 Disagree1

Villanova quoted as saying he has spoken to Fabregas who says he wants to stay, another one bites the dust! What was looking like an exciting transfer window is now looking more like a damp squib!

Born a Red Devil

Agree2 Disagree2

One a website source claims Arsenal have no interest in matching the bid and one says Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea all want him as well. They constantly contradict themselves.

Agree0 Disagree1

Absolute rubbish the question is who needs cesc the most? Chelsea, arsenal, man city have already got talented midfielders

Agree0 Disagree1

Maybe they want to sell him but they won't publicise it as his fee will go down!

Agree0 Disagree0

A £25m bid was a joke anyway.

Given the clauses it's rumoured Arsenal negotiated with Barcelona, it would require closer to double that to tempt them.

This all seems more like posturing from United, to make their big money sponsors think they're after 'star' players, than an actual serious attempt to by him.

Agree1 Disagree1

I honestly feel that the bid for Fabregas is just appease the fans and major sponsers and give them the impression that we're competing with the big spenders. sorry this Red here just doesn't believe it. Obviously Barca weren't going to let him go at £26m, it's just childish battering. We'll end up with Baines and no one else. I do believe though that we have a couple of crackers in our youth set-up, Adnan and Cole. Cole for one reminds me of Scholes more than anyone else,

J-Stand

Agree0 Disagree1

Disagree j-stand.

The glazers are good businessmen, they know you have to spend money too make money, and making money is what the are interested in.

Doesn't mean we'll get the best signings, or the ones we need, as I don't think they really understand football, but they will definitely spend the money when needed.

Thorne

Agree1 Disagree0

But Thorne. If we get signings but not the ones we need, what's the point?

According to tv - City, Chelski and Arsenal have all expressed an interest in Fabregas.

redseven

Believable26 Unbelievable9

Lets get real here. Arsenal have first refusal on him if Barca sell him. There is also a clause that means Arsenal will take a percentage of any fee, So Barca will want a lot more for him than what United have supposed to have offered. Wake up and smell the coffee guys Woodward has a list of bids that will keep the punters happy and on the edge of their seats. All with the price that will get them all a vast difference than what United will pay. None will come to any fruition but once again the statement will be well we tried to sign him and tried to sign the other. there's no value in the market.
Anyone know Paul Scholes telephone number

Agree2 Disagree0

Do you honestly think that given United's fanbase, even if they were to say there will be no more signings this window, that they wouldn;t sell enough season tickets?
Take your tin foil hat off mate.
IF we were to bid for someone with no intention of signing them, the reason would much more likely be to disguise our actual targets, not swindle the fans. They absolutely don't need to do what you're suggesting.

Agree3 Disagree1

Have you really had your head in the sand for the last few seasons. The only reason we got RVP was we had lost the league to city. Corporate sales and season tickets were struggling. Hence the zero waiting list for tickets. Just look back at all the players we were intrested in that never came. I do not mean the 17 million players like Young and Jones Also De gea ( we had no choice with him ) we needed a keeper. Surely you must remember there's no value in the market crap. We got the prospects of course but Hazard Mata Sniejder Nasri all the other established stars did not come to us. Why we did not offer enough for them we did not offer the most money for wages. We got RVP yes and what a great buy he has proved. Other clubs were worried about his injuries he had only had 1 season before us injury free. We took a gamble it paid off. As far as United in for the mega stars reallisticly I am afraid those days are long gone. The Berbatov deal has frightened the glazers off letting us have our own money for big transfers. Be content with prospects as long as they are the right price. European cup winning days are long gone. Our level now is getting through the group stages. Look at what Munich have done this Summer and that's after winning the EPL its frightening the team they are assembling

Agree1 Disagree0

Get used to being let down boy, s. No one wants to sign for Moyes. He and Woodward have no pulling power what's so ever. Championship here we come. We have had our glory years, here, s to the next 26 year wait for a trophy. And why does, nt Rooney come out say something about his future. Instead of just talking about his thatch of dead mans hair.
Rant over. Still. Love the club. Not just the pillock s who are in charge now.

Rock the red

Agree0 Disagree2

Too paranoid by far mate.

The Glazers May not be great football people, but they are serious business guys. They know that doing what you are talking about would lose them "customers" and hit their profits badly. They will put in the money too keep us around at the top, as it will cost them far more not too.

Also, what team have you been following? Utd have *never* been about signing established stars. Yes we sign one every few years, when we really had to, but mainly we have always been about signing young talent and developing them into stars. At least in the last 20 years or so.

You may not trust the glazers to know football (me neither) but trust them to know business, and to not let their cash cow starve.

Thorne

Agree1 Disagree0

Thorne has a good point you know, at the end of the day they are business men and they know they'd be too stupid to let the biggest sports brand in the world slide downhill. Yes a legendary man has stepped down but he's still around, he'll still have an influence on transfers maybe from next summer onwards. Surely if anything it'll mean the Glazers input more money to keep us at the top and ensure this massive change for us goes smoothly so they can continue to make money and quickly make their debt disappear.

Strootman has joined Roma so we didn't even bid for him surely that was Moyes idea. considering everyman and his dog were certain we'd buy him, makes for a most unusual window

Believable21 Unbelievable3

Oh god no. looks like the Evertonians will be coming - Ok Baines makes sense - but i'm not convinced by 'big bird' one little bit

Agree4 Disagree0

Our big signing will turn out to be fellaini, I can't wait : (

Agree2 Disagree1

That's because most people reckon they know something about football, or apparently someone linked with the clubs, when really 80% of people here aren't.
The signs were there, first the Rooney situation had to be sorted, also no reason it would take so many weeks to sort.

Melwing28

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't know where you've got your info from but Strootman hasn't joined anyone!

Agree0 Disagree0

How are you so sure we were in for Strootman?, because the papers told you?if we were to sign every player we were teniously linked with we'd have a squad of 100+. less of the moyes bashing. you are clearly paying too much attention to sly spurts or reading too much of the sun. less fantasy football and more support.

Agree3 Disagree0

There are some on here who claim Strootman would be a great buy, whist claiming Fellaini would be a poor buy. Get real for Christ sake. One, Strootman has had one solid link and that's with Roma for 11 million Euros. (His worth in my opinion) He is slow, has no goal threat and is by no means a midfield destroyer. The other - Fellaini has been an all round success for Everton, so knows the EPL well. He can play in several position ranging from defensive mid to striker. Has a goal threat if played just behind the striker, or from set pieces. Or he can be a powerful midfield enforcer. If he's done as well as he has at Everton, who have a small squad with only a few really top players, just think what he could be like at United. I'd like to see him playing alongside Carrick, with another purchase, this time an attacking midfielder/winger bought in to play with Kagawa and Rooney as an attacking 3 behind RVP.
Mik

Agree2 Disagree0

Does my head in every1 slagging fellaini off. If u was any good at managing u would b where moyes is. Some of u r up your own arses united win trophies nearly every year and buy players hu sometimes turn out to be great or sometimes rubbish but they still win things. why don't u support moyes and united or go bk to a team wts spending 100 mill plus u plastic fans davemufc

Agree1 Disagree0

I don't get you Mik. You keep banging on about Strootman being slow, then saying we should get Fellaini.

Strootman is fairly quick for a cm, although not exceptional, while Fellaini is takes half the pitch to get up to speed, and is no quicker than Strootman even then.

I'm not saying we should have gone for Strootman, I think he would have been a marginal improvement on Anderson at best, and we need better than that. However, at least give a factually accurate argument.

Thorne

Agree0 Disagree0

Couldn't agree more. I'd rather have Fellani over strootman any day of the week.

He's not given credit on this site too often. Sideshow bob with fabregas/modric would give us a very very strong mid IMO.

Agree1 Disagree0

I'm sorry but both ando and cleverly are not united material. clevs maybe on his best day but not ando. and I dunno why everyone seems to hate on fellaini so much. he's almost impossible to win the ball from and scores a fair share of goals plus proven in the prem.

Agree1 Disagree0

Spot on opinion Mik Strootman and Fellaini are both very good players but Fellaini is older more experienced and a better player in my book, been saying for ages its him we should and will be signing and been criticised loads by self claimed experts who really know very little its going to be funny when in a years time these self styled experts are saying what a great player the big fella is for us and how glad that we signed him and what a great manager Moyes ls lol Katef

Agree0 Disagree1

Everyone is getting very impatient and frustrated. Just wait and see, we will make a good signing, it has been the pipeline for a while to replace scholes, there is just no more putting it off. Moyes has identified that area so let wait and see. Not my ideal choice but If it is fellani he will give us height and strength, something we need and with better players around him we will do well.

Dan h

Agree0 Disagree1

Well I never rated strootman so could not care less where he goes.

As for Fellaini all I know is that he has always given us a horrid time and made our midfielders look like championship level opposition.

Some one mentioned cleverly and anderson being poor and I agree before we start slagging off players like fellaini take a look at welbeck, cleverly and anderson and you would need to really choose your words carefully and what does united quality mean as it seems the bar is set differently for some players. If some of the lot who play for us currently were at another pl team no one here would want them.

Shahram

Agree0 Disagree0

Fellini spends more time elbowing players than he does on the ball, very slow, has no real tactile brains, no technical skill ability, he is pure muck, full stop, il never forgive Moyes if he brings that long streak of misery into our club!he wouldn't get his game for chelsea, city, barca, madrid or bayern, he is no way near world class and that's what we need in midfield at the moment!

Agree0 Disagree0

"I'm sorry but both ando and cleverly are not united material. clevs maybe on his best day but not ando. "

anderson is miles better then cleverly he's overrated because he's english but anderson when he's fit awesome some of his passes well better then cleverly

Agree3 Disagree0

Some of you Strootman bashers are being OTT to be honest, would he have broken into the dutch national team aged 21 (considering the dutch aren't short of good midfielders) while also picking up the captains armband too?

He's good on the ball, definitely can be a goal threat in the right areas and likes to attack directly, IMO definitely would improve our midfield. He's better than Cleverley and Anderson! Only 23 too, a bit younger than Kagawa so has plenty of time to improve.

Fellaini is also a good player, a lot of people see him and think 'big guy must just muscle his way to the back of the net' but he's actually a clever player with his passing and moving too. Personally I don't think he'd be a great help to us against the biggest teams in europe but also he'd be an improvement on Cleverley and Anderson.

Ozwald

Agree0 Disagree0

Few regular posters going on about us signing Strootman being ideal for our midfield, just because he isn't a flair player means we slate him when he is perfect, we have no idea blah blah, seems the Utd scouts and/or Moyes didn't believe in him.
I have said all summer I don't see us signing and certainly hope we don't sign him. Player who is good enough but isn't needed also is Garay, and I have said this isn't happening even though one of the Eds and again various frequent posters on here have said deal nearly done, in talks and how ideal he is for giving us a higher line, yeah ok footy experts talking utter nonsense tryin gto sound clever let's see if we sign him too!
