To tell the truth I haven't seen an awful lot of stekelenburg but I personally would have put Neuer, Adler and de gea ahead of him in terms of my preferred options. Like I said not seen a lot of him but could the main reasons why he is favourite to be signed be because he is tall, has experience but most importantly would cost far less than the other options because of ajax's financial difficulties?

Has anyone got any updates on Hargreaves?

Mickey. . . . . . . . . Mickey you obviously don't read this site regularly or you would remember I told everybody Gill has let it be known to senior sports journalists that Hargreaves is finished and won't play for United again. I still think with his knackered legs he would be better than Gibson. RAINFISHTROMBONE

Great news today about Ravel he got a 12 month referral and a £1300 fine which was mostly down to all the hard work that Fergie did behind the scenes. It was a very clever defence they came up with. Lets just hope he sorts his head out, stops thinking he is Tony Montana and concentrates in his football. Don't be surprised if Fergie sends him on loan to get him away from bad influences. I now wait for the day he pulls the shirt on for the first team and our faith was justified. RAINFISHTROMBONE

Oh, btw, Sydney, ED, whoever, what do you think of the Argentine keeper? the one who plays for AZ Alkmaar? He won't be expensive and he's probably not too bad? could be worth considering?

The Moon.
{Editor's note - Have not seen him play}- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Sergio Romero? Please not him. He is a very average goalkeeper. I wold take Tomasz Kuszczack over him any day. I still think it will be David de Gea. Again, do not rule out a move for Julio Cesar.

"28 Jan 2011 16:23:26

For h*** sake why are'nt we moving for Torres? In fairness, tell Welbeck to go wherever he wants and bring in Torres! We are a huge club and we should have a player of his quality, if Chelsea get him we may aswel hand over the title for the next 3 years!

Unnamed sir"

A few reasons:

1. Liverpool would sooner send Torres on a tour of Afghanistan than sell him - to their biggest enemies in particular.

2. If Fergie was to somehow manage to convince them to let him have Torres, he would cost in the region of £65-75m - not because he is worth that, but because of the rivalry between the two teams.

3. Torres would never agree to it. He's a rare breed, as loyal as a dog is to his master. He'd join out of respect for LFC, as with Atleti and Real.

4. Rooney and Berbatov would have to be sold. Torres plays up front, preferrably without a partner directly beside him, when he's on-form he's (admittedly) better than Berbatov, who is better at link-up play. The current tactics would have to be overhauled, which wouldn't be of benefit of the team as a whole. This is why Citeh haven't signed him yet. They have 5-6 strikers, 3 of which will fully expect to be starting every week - which cannot happen if Torres were to join.

If Balague has said something then it's probably true. Unlike
the pundits here, he's nearly dead on in everything he says. Like all this talk of Dani Alves off to City. He says its complete BS and he was right. {ed's note - he also said Torres was leaving in the summer, along with Gerrard and that Arteta was signing for Osasuna.}

No transfers in january (maybe Oxlade-Chamberlain but that's a big big question mark).

There were some rumours about Sanchez but we won't make an offer until next season and only if we can't get Gareth Bale.

No mate. There are two possible logical explanations. One is a token bid to show "we are still in the market" and the second is signs of hope and desperation when the wheels are falling apart. Imo it is both. They bid for him when lfc finished second and it got knocked back, they did it again in the summer, it got knocked back and now the most outrageous and idiotic of all is the current january bid when any sane person knows that torres will not move nor will LFC sell in january.

All clubs would like torres in their team, whether their bids and attempts are "token" bids or not is determined by their likeliness to sign the player. It would have been a completely different ball game, if it had been Inter, Milan, Barcelona bidding for him.

REDFAITH

*I see your point, I think it depends on what we each class as a token bid. I think you are correct in that Abramovich wants to prove something. .but I also believe that he would have every intention of paying the record transfer fee to get the player. For me personally, I wouldn't class that as a token bid. A token bid would be offering just short of what Liverpool want, knowing they won't accept. Which could very well be the case but as it stand I think he would pay the fee.

To REDFAITH

Perhaps we will wait for Torres to tell his agent that he only wants to go to Chelsea and then we will make a nice big "token" bid to show we really are competing with Chelsea.

How can you think Chelsea would make a "token" bid and yet you firmly deny that we would?

Meanwhile SAF is sat hoping 36yr old Scholes signs a 1 year extension to shore up our creaking midfield.

If the likelihood of torres going to chelsea is 10 times that of reina coming to united then the both figures are equal to zero!

REDFAITH {ed's note - did Ngiak know that Torres actually held talks with Chelsea in the summer at the same time as Benayoun? He rejected a move then, why does Ngiak think he would want to move now new owners are in place and he is enjoying his football?}"""
dear sirs,
well, stranger things have happened. your theories are as good as ngiak's. they are all just that, theories.
as ngiak has said, its just a feeling. and ngiak is not sure at all if torres is "enjoying his football" now. he was over the moon when liverpool was challanging man united for the title 2 years ago. but the last season and a half? he is barely pretending to go through the motions. injuries or otherwise.
well, only 3 days left. it may be too late for things to happen.
but time will tell. .

Not having a go at Ngiak, but he believes in his instinct and his "funny feelings" ed!

"dear mr redfaith,
ngiak thinks the move is on. torres has been desperate to leave for a year already. and unlike us, chelsea can afford it.
there is a ten times more likelihood that torres goes to chelsea than reina comes to man united (for whatever reason these guys sprout over here - conspiracy theory or otherwise)
ngiak has this funny guy feeling that it will happen. .
gan"

Torres has been desperate to move? I read quotes from him and his agent for the last year which suggest completely different things! If he was so desperate he would have put in transfer request in the summer when Chelski bid for him then, he didn't. That was their best chance and he still didn't go. He wants to stay till the end of the season and move on then.

ED - Any news about oxlade, sanchez, any bloody keepers off the list?

Also i had seen somewhere that Everton going into Admin?? can you confirm if that's just plain BS.

what happened to the likely bid for Holtby? has he failed to impress?

sorry for the spanish inquisition just getting bored with the no transfer action

MONK {ed's note - it has been really quite at Old Trafford, doesn't seem like anything is stirring after all the talk. Might be a case of keeping your powder dry for the summer, after all you are clear at the top of the league.}

Oh really? How else can you explain the bid for torres then? He is bang on not moving in january, especially now that dalglish is the manager, and LFC are never ever going to sell him in january that too to a premier league club no matter what. So it basically is a token bid saying "we are still big in the market" when in fact they have been cost cutting and flogging off players to stay in line with the FFP.

REDFAITH

*Incorrect REDFAITH. Roman wants 1 last big moment in the limelight before all the financial rules come in. If Chelsea have indeed made a bid for Torres then i doubt it is a token bid. I have no doubt Chelsea would like to sign him, whether they will is a different matter.

To REDFAITH - think you need to switch your tv and radio on mate- breaking news on sky etc- Torres urging LFC to listen/consider Chelsea bid and quote"he would consider a move to chelsea"-Andy. {ed's note - yes it is originating from Guillem Balague, who got it from Rafael Benitez, who is saying it because he wants people to believe Liverpool is falling apart without him. Torres has not even been in contact with the club and has been enjoying a couple of days off. This is Sky stirring up a betting market.}

"Why not bid for torres and reina . ans we can't afford them . we can't even afford sanchez"

Correction:- Ans, its LFC which is the bloodiest rival of MUFC and both clubs do not do business, not on BIG names anyway. LFC will let them go for lesser bidders rather than to united! We have 0% chance of getting either of them two. As for sanchez, he has gone nowhere, staying with his club after a "we are in the market" failed attempt by chelsea. He could be very likely moving to united.

Yes Ballague said and it is true! Bravo!

In fact chelsea are making a "token" bid just to appease their fans! Torres is not going to leave LFC, not in january anyway, and to united, even if we made a crazy bid, NO WAY!

Thoughts ed?

REDFAITH

{Editor's Note: Chelsea are not known for their making token bids to appease the fans.}

No we are! {ed's note - Chelsea bid for Torres every transfer window, there is nothing token about it, if Hodgson had still been in charge they would probably have got him this time. But Hodgson has gone.}

Just heard from a friend at Southampton who said Utd have made a bid for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain with a view to discussions happening after tomorrows game. Apparently he will stay at Southampton for the rest of the season, and if they get promoted to the Championship will stay another year after that.

*I thought the whole idea of us needing a midfielder was to get someone to create things further up the pitch and get his fair share of goals? Now Modric is a talent no doubt but he is much closer to Scholes of 2011 than the one of 96-2003. Dont get me wrong if United need that type of player then Modric is the best there is but I feel we need someone with more of a goal threat.

TK-Red

- - - - - - - -

And where is this offensive midfielder supposed to play in a 4-4-2?

It is not about goals in central midfield. We are lacking creativity and the ability to keep possession which is exactly what Modric would add to the team. He is also very underrated in his defensive duties.
