Sydney! {Ed001's Note - I just think that Fergie would push for the right player, I think he sees that player as Modric. That is just something I have been told from the Spurs end, that they are a little nervous of him joining United. Hence the arrival of VDV last summer. I don't have any info from United's end of things to know how correct the person's reading of the situation is, but it does make sense. It just seems correct to me. And buying him would not necessarily mean a huge spend, not when you have the likes of Welbeck, Macheda, Gibson etc who can all fetch decent money.}

@I am not one to take much notice of Sunday papers but one paper said last week that United will look to sign De Gea, Modric, Rodwell & Young. They believe he (SAF) has been promised £50m plus sales. Is spending £50m so surprising when we spent that amount in 2007? Who knows, I guess we will have to wait and see. But I won't hold my breath.

Sydney! {Ed001's Note - when a club is the size of United there shouldn't even be a question about its ability to spend. I don't know whether they are right about the amounts he has to spend but the first 3 are all very likely signings. The question is whether there would have to be money raised to buy them all or if they could be brought in anyway?}

Does anyone know what will happen with Sneijder, Young and Berbatov? I'm hearing Berbatov will sign a new contract, but wants a longer contract than what's being offered. I'd sell him personally, but what SAF does will be right. Sneijder would be great, but I think a bit hopeful.

I mentioned a few months ago that we would be signing De Gea and Rodwell and was called an idiot, so whoever that was. . . .chin up!

I've also heard we will sign 4 players. De Gea and Rodwell for sure, then an attacking midfielder and left winger. Scholesy will retire this season if we win the league, and owen, Hargreaves and Tomas K will leave. Gibson will stay (don't rate him, but SAF likes him).

why chin up, have we signed de gea and Roswell, NO oh I didn't think so, chin up doyley! !?!

Sydney! {Ed001's Note - I think that if Fergie wanted him the club would give him the money to buy him. The question would be how highly does Fergie want him? Would he be prepared to pay what it would take? Let's face it, it wouldn't be difficult to sell the need for a big name signing and the resultant shirt sales jump etc.}

@So Ed, have you heard something we have not? It's just a couple of weeks ago you said you think United will net spend a maximum of £15m, have you heard anything good that has made you think again?

Sydney! {Ed001's Note - I just think that Fergie would push for the right player, I think he sees that player as Modric. Sydney! {Ed001's Note - he let Fergie do that because Liverpool weren't interested, can you really see him letting United get the jump over Liverpool? He may be friends with Fergie but he is also friends with Dalglish etc. I think Fergie would have to make all the running myself, but he is certainly very capable of doing so and I do think he would sway Young to choose you. If Spurs don't make the Champions League I can see Modric in your midfield next season. But I have heard nothing of any move for Adam since January, in fact the January move seems to have been a case of just having money burning a hole in Levy's pocket and no one to spend it on. I am not sure there is any serious interest there. As for Young, he is Redknapp's type of player, lightweight, fast and tricky, oh and full of fancy little flicks and tricks. I would suggest it was more about allowing him to move Bale back to left back than any idea of replacing him.}

@But would United be willing to spend £40m on a 26 year old Modric? That is what he would probably go for isn't it Ed? I have to admit he would be United's missing link.

What do you think Spurs would accept? Berbatov plus £20m?

Sydney! {Ed001's Note - I think that if Fergie wanted him the club would give him the money to buy him. The question would be how highly does Fergie want him? "Sydney! {Ed001's Note - it is certainly possible, but I wouldn't put any store by Houllier's influence in it. If Ged was going to influence a player he would point them in Liverpool's direction, he is still a fan at heart. Plus there is a very good chance he won't be there to have any sway! I do think he would choose United if he was certain to play, but he won't want to be on the bench most weeks. It is a difficult choice for a player that has no particular affiliation to either club.}"

@I didn't mean Houllier will use his influence, I meant Houllier would allow SAF to bump into Young in the Villa tunnel. The same way as he let SAF bump into Benzema in the Lyon tunnel. You are right, it would give Young a tough choice.

Question for you Ed, why are Spurs looking to sign Young & Adam? Wouldn't you say they are direct replacements for Bale & Modric? Can you see either leaving in the summer?

"Sydney! {Ed001's Note - I believe he would prefer a return south out of preference, yes even over a move to United. If Spurs move for him I expect him to go there. But at the moment Liverpool are in pole position, mostly because they are the only real suitors. It will certainly be interesting if United move for him, he would have a real choice on his hands because he might not fancy his chances of regular football at United, while knowing he would be almost certain to start for Liverpool.}"

@From what I gather Spurs and Liverpool are two teams that are certainly interested in him, Liverpool are the club that have made the most noises so I agree they are favourites right now, simply because they are the only club that have been persistent. If United want him then SAF will talk to him personally. He is good friends with Houlier and I have no doubt that SAF will speak to him personally and ask him to join (If SAF want him). This would usually seal the deal.

I am not sure if United are interested in him, although I wouldn't be surprised, he can play both wings and through the centre, he can take free-kicks and we will be replacing Obertan and Giggs will be leaving next season. He would make a great squad player and would play in nearly every game, albeit as a substitute for most. I still think SAF asking him to join would seal the deal, and if United are interested in him, SAF will do this.

Ed, would the famous SAF handshake seal the deal?

"My uncles big mates with a Villa scout and I have it on strong authority that Young is going to Liverpool."

@During January, Liverpool were hot on his tail but I understand time ran out due to bringing in Carroll unexpectedly. United have not made any official move for the player therefore Liverpool are at the moment favourites to sign him. BUT, if United enter the race, it's understood that he would pick United over any club. United have CL football to offer him, Liverpool cannot offer him any European football.

So as long as United make a move for Young, they will probably get him, but if they don't make a move for him he is likely to end up at Liverpool. As he will only have one year left on his contract, he will become around 40% cheaper. So where the papers are quoting £25m, he would actually cost around £15m, possibly cheaper.

What does the editor think about Young's future?

dear sir
as quoted in the same article, why would we pay 25 million for a guy who has just over a year left on his contract?
ngiak always thought the value drops in the last year of the contract?

Premier League leaders Manchester United are on the verge of agreeing a deal to sign Aston Villa winger Ashley Young for £25 million, according to reports in the Sun.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has long been an admirer of the England international, and views the 25 year old as the perfect player to take over from veteran Ryan Giggs on the wing at Old Trafford when the Welshman eventually decides to hang up his boots.

Young, who only has 14 months to left on his current deal at Villa Park, has refused to enter into negotiations with the Midlands club about improving his current £60,000-a-week deal, and is set to be offered at least a £100,000-a-week package to move to the Red Devils this summer.

"Him moving to Manchester United was the talk of the dressing-room, an England insider is quoted as saying in the paper.

"You can see why United want him."
