To be fair, SAF didn't address the midfield problem either. Moyes at least identified that it needed sorting. He seems to have been let down by people further up the food chain.
Good for Everton. They held out for a good deal and got one and taught us a thing or two. Seems like the Imposters in Madrid were the only ones trying to do a good job.
How incompetent can you get? Try to buy a player this late in the window without any sense of what is involved. In the meantime try to sew up the other deal for Fellaini in the last hour of the window when there has been talk for weeks about buying him. It probably won't happen now anyway. (Plus loan out a decent young midfield player who would have provided an option on the bench).
Wasn't the story that they had left without paying the money?
What's the idea with Kagawa? He hasn't had a chance to prove himself, so am puzzled why they would let him go, unless it's as a swap with Pastore?
Why don't we get Rene back? It would look like desperation and it probably would be, but he has a great tactical mind and he knows how to coach very good players, let alone the ones who aren't so good. Essential in the European games. Letting all the previous staff go suggested insecurity rather than confidence.
According to one paper this morning, the Herrera deal didn't go through because Moyes wasn't willing to pay the asking price, thinking he was over-valued. He has a reputation for not wanting to pay over the odds, apparently. This seems bizarre, given that Woodward is the vice-chair and presumably more in charge of the money than Moyes, and that they desperately needed to make some kind of signing. So it was better to save £4m and do without a player? Also, Fellaini supposedly went without his loyalty bonus to force his move through, so Utd still didn't actually pay more than the release clause fee.
