In an attempt to alleviate the partisan atmosphere on here at the moment, what are everyone's thoughts on scrapping the Balon d'Or for 2020?

I think it's a strange one, given that all competitions will be completed (obviously except for the the internationals but that doesn't usually matter when they have a year off too) . If I was KDB, Mané, etc. I'd be pretty upset I didn't get a chance to win whilst in my peak.

Very odd decision jim.

They were clearly unhappy that neither messi nor Ronaldo or any madrid player could be given the award this year.

3.) 21 Jul 2020 05:33:23
Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones are really upset too apparently.

Ligue 1 was cancelled as well as Eredevisie and Belgian league along with other leagues. And before you guys say they are "weak" leagues or my favourite phrase "farmer's league"; there are some really good players and also Ballon D'or is given by French Association if some sorts.

Also CSM, Ronaldo has scored 30 league goals already and is going to win Serie A and still in the CL and Messi has broken the assist record in La liga and won topped the scoring charts too. So they would have found a way to squeeze at least one of them near the top.

Atty Jim, if Bayern go on to win the CL I think Lewandowski will be the most disappointed as he would be well in shot to at least make the top 3.

Hi all, been a long time since I even visited the site so I hope everyone is holding up ok.

This has been bouncing round my brain for a few weeks now. I think a lot of logistical and safety issues could be solved by cancelling NEXT season, rather than this one.

Takes the pressure of an early restart to line with proper health precautions; allows for a proper breaks before 2021 euros and 2022 World Cup at the weird time of the season it would be; means that fans could still fill stadia. just seems to be an easier option than all the fiddly stuff we are going to have to go through this time round.

Ok, so it wouldn’t be the best option for getting the most out of the players, but it must surely be the better option for the safety of the nation and avoiding a disjointed football calendar?

Would love to hear thoughts.

Clubs would fold Alty. Players and staff may be laid off. The revenue loss would be stratospheric. I doubt the league pyramid will ever return to normal if this happens.

So whilst I don't disagree with your intentions behind it. given the money involved with not playing vs playing I imagine there's no way on God's green earth you would see a start-stop scenario through choice.

3.) 26 May 2020 00:25:18
I disagree why finish this season and then have a season long break? How can any club sustain wages for instance?
No games means no TV money, no games means no new shirts for Adidas, Nike ect so there not going to pay as much.
This season not finishing alone for this season could see quite a few football league clubs fold like Bury did recently, who's going to invest in teams so they can train?

It's certainly thinking outside the box. However, there are so many vested interests that you'd probably collapse world football. The Euro's have already been moved, some leagues have cancelled this season, there is the issue of UCL and Europa league. The players contracts, the wages and bonuses, the TV coverage, the sports wear branding, the sponsorship deals etc etc. Then there is the fact that very few sides below the EPL would survive a year of costs with no income to pay them.

The simplest answer is nearly always the best. If the league can be finished this season, in a safe manner that does not put undue stress on public services then great. But there needs to be a cut off date, after which you need to draw a line under this season and prepare for next.

If the footballing authorities have to choose between losing a third of one season or the entirety of another it seems a very clear and obvious choice.

Ole in/ out, optimism, Glazers, Woodward, squad depth, rivals? Nope, this post is one for the child-like supporter in me.

If you could sign one player in the whole wide world for this current united team, who would it be? I can't decide between VVD or Mbappe. Dream world, I know, but it's just a bit of fun to lighten the mood on here.

(Honourable mention to Ronaldo too. He would vastly improve our team for a few more years, is a United legend and would be the 'experienced player' I think we need to guide these promising young kids)

Try to keep the abuse to a minimum please. :)

kante. he would totally transform, not only our midfield but the entire team.

2.) 21 Jan 2020 12:18:43
There’s only one player Mbappe.

3.) 21 Jan 2020 12:45:05
Bruno fernandes would make such a difference does everything you want from a midfielder I think fred can be our kante he is getting better and better and he's doing it on his own if you put fernandes and pogba in that midfield we could be a really good outfit.

4.) 21 Jan 2020 12:47:17
Kevin De Bruyne.

5.) 21 Jan 2020 14:56:17
Bernard silva or mahrez.

6.) 21 Jan 2020 22:59:04
Messi.

No to Bale.

If I had to sign 4 players it would probably be KDB, VVD, Messi and Mbappe.

Sorry, I’ve been outside enjoying the sunshine.

I’m surprised nobody has talked about the possibility of cancelling NEXT season instead. It would take the pressure off needing to finish this season quickly, allow players to rest before the euros, allow all competitions to conclude properly, and could even be a good opportunity to align with the unusual break in the 2022 season for the WC. Nulling a season where a ball hasn’t been kicked seems much easier than one where all is technically still to play for.

I couldn’t possibly say 100% but I could guess. Going from 2nd place to clearly nowhere near doesn’t look great. Going from bad to better, then better to even better does look good, and worth some credit.

As it happens, no, I don’t think 66 will be enough for 4th next season as I think more points will be nicked off the current top 2. There are only so many points available in the league, ergo if it’s close at the top, the points will be lower for the eventual winner with the chad in pack having higher points. What I will give you is that 4th would not be seen as progress next season, but given how far ahead city and Liverpool are, I want to see progress in terms of playing style and the like if 3rd is to be our ultimate position.

Shan, would you take 4th next year if we got more than 66 points? Or 5th if we somehow broke 100 points?

You’re right Shan, none of us who think that Ole as Jesus (sic) want to reach the level of the top teams in Europe. What a thing to suggest. Also, you’re obsessed by points aren’t you? League position means more than anything, just ask Liverpool fans about last season. Time to drop the agenda maybe and be a little more fluid in your stand point.

Do points matter more than league position now? Best let the United squad of 96/ 97 know that their league medal isn’t worth as much as the others (I had to google this stat - we won it with a mere 75 points so we are only 9 behind winning the league! )

Ignoring the point difference between a draw and a win, there are only so many points available in a season. If one team smashes records, there will be fewer points to go round to everyone else. So if it’s a close league then there will be lower points at the top.

Either way Shan, your insistence of spinning everything into a negative is starting to become insufferable. Everyone on here wants us to win the league, everyone wants us to win trophies. But 3rd place is better than 5th, which is better than 14th. It’s all about perspective. I don’t know if you’ve ever said, but do you actually want ole to succeed?

I disagree. We look totally knackered and a big rest looks required. If match sharpness is an issue, play a second string team and then bring on those who may need to stretch their legs. We can’t underestimate how quickly next season will be with us and then the slog begins again!
