Good Morning Ed002,

I know January is still a few months away, but do you know if United will be active during the transfer window, especially losing a player to a long term injury? Or will LVG just try to cover the position with his adaptable squad?

If we are going to be actively looking for players, are you able to give us an idea of positions, and possible players?

Many Thanks

Atko1982

{Ed002's Note - They need to address the centre back situation, this was probably the real mistake of the summer. Starting out looking for one and possibly even two centre backs and getting nothing was probably disappointing for many. Hummels was the primary although unrealistic target. There was a simple obtainable solution with Garay and Kongolo that could have been completed very early on. Even as a last minute buy, the affordable Nkoulou was being touted around. The club will I am sure look to adding a centre back in January.}

1.) 29 Sep 2015 12:45:04
Thank you Ed, appreciate your time and info :)

2.) 29 Sep 2015 12:50:03
I'd be happy with Kongolo. My top target would be Stones though. I think it would be excellent for us and England to have Smalling and Stones at the same club.

3.) 29 Sep 2015 13:04:37
Winston Reid

4.) 29 Sep 2015 17:07:53
Great shout Wallace, mentioned him before. I would have loved van Dijk myself but fair play to him as I don't think he was willing to possibly just be a squad player.

Jose fonte has handed in a transfer request. Interesting.

Atko1982

1.) 05 Jan 2017 17:20:21
Let's hope he comes to us his experience could be vital.

2.) 05 Jan 2017 17:50:43
Liverpool bound l think. Surely his ship has sailed in joining us!?

3.) 05 Jan 2017 18:01:01
Ed 01 thinks he's a banker for you guys, maybe smalling on the move?

4.) 05 Jan 2017 18:25:24
It will be interesting to see if he comes in, has other premier league offers or is looking for a final payday in China. For me he does not seem the type to go looking for the china money so assume he wants a final crack at some silverware.
I would take him over Smalling who I think is on his way out by the summer if not now.

5.) 05 Jan 2017 19:11:08
Ed02 has as much as confirmed that he is United bound on the Saints page. Add Lindelof, I think we are set with the centre halfs.

6.) 05 Jan 2017 19:13:40
Is he any better than what we have? I'd rather take van djik.

7.) 05 Jan 2017 19:18:19
If you take Fonte and lidelof on top of Bailly, rojo, smalling, Jones and blind who can play there aswell I would imagine you would have to let 2 go. Smalling and rojo?

8.) 05 Jan 2017 19:30:45
Fonte is a proper defender, who'll help a lot with our relatively youthful back line. We're short of some real experience and craft in there. Lindelof obviously one with the future in mind. Think they'd be a great pair of signings if they come off. Unfortunately it might lead to us losing someone, and I have to say, I never really get a kick out of losing players who've tried their best for us.

9.) 05 Jan 2017 19:49:16
Everyone was waxing lyrical about Bailly and ready to offer him a statue outside Old Trafford less than 3 months ago. Now people are saying they want Fonte and Lindelof as our CB pairing. Are people really that obsessed with new signings that they don't care who is sacrificed?

{Ed025's Note - your a very wise man wazza...for a manc.. :)

10.) 05 Jan 2017 19:53:25
I'm sure Bailly is our long term no.1 at CB. He looks the absolute business.

I think Fonte is a short term solution and will be a good option. Jones and lindelof the other 2. I still believe rojo and smalling wi be sold.

11.) 05 Jan 2017 20:06:59
I've been called worse Ed.

{Ed025's Note - i dont doubt it for 1 minute wazza.. :)

12.) 05 Jan 2017 20:25:54
For me it is one new addition not 2. Happy If we bring in more but not essential. Fonte as a short term addition allowing Bailly to take his time and be ready next year. Plus he is now at African cup.
Couple of left field thoughts.
1- has mourinho ever looked at a back 3?
2- Mourinho appears to like a big solid right back. Bailly looked okay there when he played a few weeks back.

13.) 05 Jan 2017 20:34:24
A back 3 would surely hinder players like Pogba and Herrera, who are now looking the business in a system that suits them and the team as a whole. Plus, a back 3 would mean either dropping Carrick or Herrera, since Pogba isn't going to be dropped, and playing 3-4-3, like Chelsea, or playing one less genuine attacker and playing 3-5-2. I don't really see how changing to either of those systems would benefit United given that they're playing really well in the current one.

14.) 05 Jan 2017 22:04:03
Fonte will be experience and cover, Bailly and Lindelof will be the first choice pairing, Jones and Rojo to go I'd say, we do lack real experience at the back so I'd say Fonte is a decent addition.

15.) 06 Jan 2017 00:05:11
Wazza, I've no doubt that Bailly will be turn out to be a top defender. But if a guy with Fonte's experience and know-how is available, you have to be in for him. All of our central defenders are relatively youthful, so it does no harm to have someone like Fonte come in and help with their development, as well as give us crucial experience and strengthen the squad. Unfortunately it does look like one of, or maybe both, Smalling and Rojo will be leaving. That still leaves Jones, Bailly, Lindelof and Fonte to rotate for 2 places over the next year or so. That's pretty decent no matter what way you look at it.

16.) 06 Jan 2017 07:11:55
I agree Noucamp we have no leadership or experience at the back so Fonte can only be a clever and important buy. I think Ed002 said on the sharkopod that would Fonte be brought in it would be as back up anyway.

17.) 06 Jan 2017 08:32:13
That is correct DD. Ed002 did mention that Lindelof was almost complete and that Fonte may also come in, but as backup.
If both come in now, then I would expect one of Smalling, Rojo or Jones to go now and another in the summer.

{Ed001's Note - Bailly and Lindelof can both play as full backs, just to point that out. Oh and Pogba played in front of a back 3 in Italy, so not sure how a back 3 would be something that would affect him adversely.}

18.) 06 Jan 2017 11:13:22
If Fonte AND Lindelof come in this Jan, i am unsure on who will become the starting CB pairing?!

What i do know is that Bailly has to be one of the 2 that starts as he is and will become even more of a beast! He has impressed me the most from day 1!

Maybe pair Bailly with Fonte and Break Lindelof in to the Prem at a comfotable pace until next season?

This leaves Jones on the bench though and he has really upped his game and impressed me and i'm happy for him this season.

Either way, if we bring in 2 x CB then Smalling and Rojo should go!

19.) 06 Jan 2017 11:43:02
i like that post wazza

02 Feb 2016 08:38:57
After City's announcement yesterday, what are peoples thoughts on the impact it'll have on the rest of their season? Personally, I think it might have a negative effect, which just might give an advantage to the other teams in the title chase?!

Thoughts please?

Atko1982

1.) 02 Feb 2016 09:28:33
Or they could go the other way and send Pellegrini out with a bang, either way i couldn't care less how they finish there season.

2.) 02 Feb 2016 09:36:22
If I was a city player I would want to be playing my best for the rest of the season. I wouldn't want, in my opinion the best manager in the world since fergie retired, to be coming to my club and getting rid of me.

3.) 02 Feb 2016 10:10:34
It is a clear transition, where by the end of January they have made it clear who the next manager will be and it is a very high quality one. City have planned this a long time and prepared the ground, they even kept the existing manager on board to do the transition. My guess is the team will be excited and positive, looking forward to a manager who they will feel will take them on to win the top prizes and they will want to be part of that. It rather differs from SAF's transition doesn't it.

4.) 02 Feb 2016 11:01:28
The only person I can see throwing their toys out the pram is Yaya.

Everyone else will be playing like their arse is on fire trying to prove they should be in the new managers thinking come the start of next season.

This could be the boost that carries City to the title this season.

5.) 02 Feb 2016 12:31:27
Red Man, I think your spot on.

If we take off our red tinted glasses, it is obvious that from the new owners taking over at citeh, they had a clear plan for the future, 8 years down the line, they have a good squad, extended their ground, built great training facilities and appointed a top quality manager add to that the trophies they have won it has been a success story.

However, their commitment to success on the field has made them weak in the official noodle partners market.

6.) 02 Feb 2016 13:59:22
EdtheRed

You are right, that could be an area they are weak in. In time our songs will perhaps be adapted to "20 partners Man Utd" and have a commercial break, rather than "20 times Man Utd", they will never match that.

07 Dec 2015 13:05:10
Has anybody seen much of Bernando Silva? Ever since Ed002 mentioned that we may be interested I've tried to watch a few Monaco games. From what I can see, he looks like a lovely player, great technique. He reminded of a David Silva type player. I think he is a player that would add something to our attacking game.

Just wondered what other people thought? Personally I would love to see him come to the Theatre, although I have a feeling we would have to pay over the odds, as the selling club is Monaco.

Atko1982

1.) 07 Dec 2015 13:33:15
Wonderful technique, clever little player with pace to burn. His limitation is his size, he is very easily pushed off the ball and would potentially struggle with the power of the players in the Premier league.

But in saying that, several "smaller" players have been able to become a success in England despite their size.

He could be a very good addition, but we would have to not expect too much too soon as he will take time to adapt to the more physical nature of our league. But in time he could become a player a little like Mata but with Pace.

2.) 07 Dec 2015 14:18:20
He does seem like a real good player. Has all the traits we need as well.

We will probably have to pay an arm and a leg to get him in January though.

3.) 07 Dec 2015 14:41:22
Probably doesn't mean much, but he has a £22mil buyout on football manager, sometimes they are accurate, sometimes not so much.

{Ed002's Note - There is no "buy out" clause.}

4.) 07 Dec 2015 14:49:41
I expect Monaco would prefer money to dismembered body parts. Lol.

5.) 07 Dec 2015 15:28:14
Beast was that a joke? Did you just enquire if he had a buyout clause because on football manager he does?

6.) 07 Dec 2015 16:01:09
LOL Shappy.

It is a colloquial expression where I am from that means paying over the odds.

7.) 07 Dec 2015 16:11:44
Angel - No mate, I didn't enquire, just pointed something out that may have been helpful to Atko.

In the game he has a buyout clause and quite often it can reflect real life when it comes to stuff like that, sometimes it doesn't though as Ed highlighted in this case.

8.) 07 Dec 2015 16:33:09
Oh okay, I thought you were just taking the mick. I didn't realise that would be the case as in the end they are just games. I know a lot of research goes into them but buyout clauses are something I wouldn't have thought game researchers would be privy to.

9.) 07 Dec 2015 16:40:24
Yeah I thought that as well mate. However thinking deeper about it, what is the point in having a buyout clause if it isn't known about? I know if I bothered to have a clause in my contract allowing me to leave I'd ensure that my agent would be making viable clubs/media aware of the case.

Who knows how it works, I presume every case is different.

01 Dec 2015 09:57:12
I presume everyone on here is an ex-player, manager, coach or just a football expert as it all sounds SO simple.

Just do this, buy them, play this formation. It's amazing why you aren't all in top football jobs.

All the negative posts repeating themselves. it gets SO boring.

Atko1982

{Ed025's Note - its just fans expressing an opinion Atko, thats what a banter site is all about mate..chill out..

1.) 01 Dec 2015 10:03:19
I actually doubt whether some of the posters are fans tho. you must get bored reading some of them? It's all doom and gloom, yet we are 3rd in the prem. Imagine if some of these people were Chelsea fans, they would be hanging from the rafters!

{Ed025's Note - the thing is Atko united fans have been spoilt over the past 20 years, watching great attacking attractive football and winning everything in sight mate so the standard for many has been set, sometimes posters go over the top i agree but its born out of passion, dont forget fans pay good hard earned money to watch games (even if it is just on telly) and have a right to be entertained mate..

2.) 01 Dec 2015 10:27:26
I agree we have been spoilt with the silverware, but I also remember some games under Fergie that were awful and boring. I think some have very selective memories. Fergie had 26 (? ) years to build his empire. LVG has had 2. Yes he's spent a lot of money, but which clubs haven't at the top? I don't want LVG at the club any longer than his current contract, and I hope we can find a young exciting manager that can bring exciting football and trophies, but for the time being I'm happy that we look like a solid team capable of winning games, no matter how boring it can be at times.

{Ed025's Note - not the right answer Atko...this is an entertainment industry mate, after grafting your arse off all week do you really want to see your hard earned cash spent on the watching of tedious predictable football?..

3.) 01 Dec 2015 10:27:44
Ed025 your wisdom is always welcome on these pages mate. Couldn't have put it better myself.

4.) 01 Dec 2015 10:47:06
There's no right or wrong answer ed, just a matter of opinions.

If it ends with 3 points for the club I love, then yes, I'm happy to have spent my hard earned cash.

{Ed025's Note - as you say Atko its all about opinions mate....i just dont want to go to a concert where mozart is being played by a skiffle group.. :)

5.) 01 Dec 2015 10:47:36
I agree with you Ed025 but I don't think that United or any Premier League club would choose to be entertaining over profitable, everything revolves around money and this is the worst thing for me.

{Ed025's Note - its very sad if thats the case TOT, but for me its up to clubs like utd to set the standard..its what they have done in the past mate..

6.) 01 Dec 2015 10:57:45
Well said Mr Ed, you should have a seperate agree/disagree button i wouldve hit agree on all 3 there spot on.

7.) 01 Dec 2015 11:00:45
Just had to google what a skiffle group is!

{Ed001's Note - Ed025 toured with Lonnie Donegan back in the day, apologies if that is spelt wrong, it was well before my time, so he knows his skiffle groups. He was previously Mozart's tour manager, so if anyone would know if the two would go together, it is him....}

8.) 01 Dec 2015 11:47:33
Skiffle? Isn't that where ED007 grew up?

{Ed025's Note - no danny..thats waffle.. :)

9.) 01 Dec 2015 11:58:37
I'm not even good at FM but I'm a fan of nearly 20 years and yes I've been spoilt with our success. Against Liecester we had 70% possession and only 2 shots on target they had 3, THIS boring safety first football is alien to me and the Man. U. I love. Going way way back before I was born to the Busby babes right through to the class of 92 and onward we are renowned foe youthful, energetic, attacking football alas no more.

{Ed025's Note - my point exactly grund..

10.) 01 Dec 2015 12:22:56
Atko as well as sorting out our favourite team we also man the phones at Samaritans you should give us a call 😆😆ask for Maze 0 800 (philosophy not working )

{Ed025's Note - i might be phoning that myself Bfro.. :)

11.) 01 Dec 2015 12:32:07
Bfro your little obsession with me is very cute.

{Ed025's Note - nothing wrong with a little bromance guys.. :)

12.) 01 Dec 2015 15:31:43
I consider myself an expert ;)

{Ed025's Note - we all do mate..

26 Nov 2015 11:57:47
Am I right in thinking that if we win our next league game we will be top of the prem? and if we win our next champs league game we will finish top of the group?

For United to win away at Leicester and away at Wolfsburg isn't impossible. yes we played poorly yesterday, and yes our style hasn't exactly been pleasing on the eye, but why are people over reacting? Look at our league positions. things aren't that bad, and everything is in our hands.

When we have to start relying on other results, that's when we need to worry.

So for now, I think we just need to forget about the game yesterday and focus on the weekend.

I for one think that we will win at Leicester, and in Germany.

Atko1982

1.) 26 Nov 2015 12:13:40
Didn't watch the match as was at work but listened to on radio. if it sounds bad on the radio then it must be dire. Weve been on the downward spire since the last year of ferries. Our transfer policy is a calamity. A kings ransom spent on absolute dross. Years ago I would of had the night off to watch utd when supposed to be working, not now they bore me to death. The club is more interested in sponsorship deals than the football. The academy is light years behind everywhere else, stuck in the past I know from first hand experience. Fans want to be entertained.

2.) 26 Nov 2015 12:28:00
Atko - the problem for me is that I am sick of having to forget about the previous game. Almost twice a week we have to forget the previous game, let's face it it's hard to remember them!

The League position is the 'Emperor's New Clothes' mate. This CL group was pretty straightforward, we are now odds on to be playing on a Thursday.

3.) 26 Nov 2015 12:39:43
we need to go away and win against wolfsburg which will be hard as they only need draw.

4.) 26 Nov 2015 12:41:34
The big point there Atko is IF IF we don't win on saturday we could be 5th IF we don't win in germany we could be out the CL and in the europa which will hamper us even more.

5.) 26 Nov 2015 12:45:56
I'm officially a pessimist (new to me) cause I cannot see any posatives at the moment. We are a completenore fest and I am starting to think teams are just giving us chances because they are so bored and desperate to get the game flowing lol

I believe also no matter who we buy, it'll still be the same boring brand of football. So for me the quicker the management is changed, the sooner we can see a brand of football worth watching. Dare I say LVG OUT, OUT, OUT!

6.) 26 Nov 2015 13:51:47
O my my. Mr positive is here.

7.) 26 Nov 2015 13:56:14
Beast has it right, the OP view would be fine if it hadn't been like this for 12 months. As I said last night, I'm not surprised any more, I'm kind of reconciled to the fact it will be hard to watch. "hasn't been especially pleasing on the eye", classic.

8.) 26 Nov 2015 14:17:30
Last night we celebrated the life and career of George Best. If Best was in the current United team he'd probably be dropped for taking too many risks and loosing possession too often.

I'll repeat my question from last night. Has a single attacking player in our squad improved under van Gaal's tenure? Scholes was bang on the money last night, "He has sorted the defence out. Attacking wise they don't look a threat, they don't look good enough, they don't look like they're going to go and score goals. " Whenever I see this United team play, I never feel confident that they're capable of scoring.

9.) 26 Nov 2015 14:23:08
I think that we will draw with Leicester and draw with Wolfsburg which means we will have to rely on CSKA getting something.

10.) 26 Nov 2015 14:32:57
I think we will win at Leicester but sent packing in CL. Last nights result hurts even more if Arsenal end up coming through their last game, which I have a lot more confidence in them getting a result than we do and us being the only english team out of it. Even worst playing on Thursday in europa league which will pretty much shatter this old team who relies on the likes of Schweinsteiger, Carrick to make the whole thing tick.

There is something seriously wrong when you can't win a game against a second tired European opponent at OT with was at stake.

I can see People saying Lingard should have/could have scored from that header and the shot he missed but to me the last 20 minutes when we needed a goal the most was the worst 20 minutes of the game and it was so disjointed i wanted to break something. I really can't make sense of the substitutions at all and have no idea what we are trying to do.

Finally, watching this team play the way we do really takes me to the limit of mental health lol. I know Fergie is gone but its almost 3 years now and we can't be using the same excuse forever.

11.) 26 Nov 2015 15:23:23
I an normally pretty calm when watching United, but last night I was all over the place; and my bloody pressure must have been through the roof.
The worst thing is though, after 20 minutes, I said to the wife we won't score tonight. I have that feeling a lot lately; and I don't like it one bit.

He played and scored in a world cup final last year. He's going to be a very good player to have in our squad. Works very hard, is a threat in the box, and has a wealth of experience for the young lads in the squad to learn from. I'd be very happy with the signing.

When LVG was in charge all the players were playing the easy ball and it got us nowhere and the play was very boring and predictable. now we have players willing to play that killer ball and they are getting hammered for not achieving it 100% of the time! Nobody in the game will make 100% of passes. I'm just happy we have a player that attempts them, and often achieves them to create goals/ chances.

Hi Maze,

Is that net spend?
and how does it compare to other teams for the same period? Would be interesting to know.

Maze, your posts would be received better without the comparisons.

If you stated 'I hope United target new players with pace' and leave it at that, more people would agree. when you start comparing to other squads, making out that theirs is vastly superior, that's when you get peoples backs up.

For the record, I agree, I do think pace is a good weapon to have, and if a player is quick, as well as technically sound, they would be a welcome addition to our squad.

Atko1982
