Position poll

“Everyone thinks I’ll go out on loan, but I don’t have that mindset.
“I’m going to kill it in pre-season and within one or two games, I’ll already be playing with them. ”
Diego Leon
THIS is what we need.
Whether it is misplaced optimism or not I don't care. I find his desire to succeed refreshing and I'll back him all the way, every time he puts on the famous red shirt.
More signings with this mindset please :)
1.) 05 Jul 2025 09:54:39
It shows a great attitude, I hope he does well. Grit, determination, confidence and self-belief are vital for a young player to succeed. That said if he does find it a tricky step up then hopefully he is humble enough to take that step back and accept that a loan might be best for his development.
He's done really well so far in his career but there is a long way to go before he's a bonafide top level player. I think with Amorim as manager playing with wingbacks, meaning that the player has slightly less defensive responsibility. Along with the fact that we haven't got anyone who has nailed down that spot, with only Dorgu and Amass who are both young themselves as competition for a starting spot that Leon has an very good chance of playing regularly if he can step up (and it's a massive step up to the EPL from what he's experienced so far) .
Personally I think Dorgu will be the regular starter, with Amass and Leon fighting it out to be the back up next season. I expect they will get their chances to show who is most ready for it during pre-season. Only one should stay as back up, with the other heading out on loan to get the experience they need at this age. My worry would be if both stay then neither will get enough minutes to develop as they should.
I wouldn't be surprised if whoever ends up going out on loan actually leapfrogs the other one when they come back if they are a regular starter while on loan. At their ages it's all about game time. The more they get the more they develop. Whoever plays the most minutes next season will probably be the better player come the end of the season.
2.) 05 Jul 2025 12:56:37
Borderline arrogance, probably misplaced but love the attitude. Look forward to seeing him. Been a bit underwhelmed by Dorgu, let’s see if Amorim’s second signing can give the first a good run for his money.
3.) 05 Jul 2025 15:23:26
He’s Amorim’s 4th signing isn’t he?
02 Jun 2025 22:34:12
Reckon I'm going to get shot down here, but here goes.
Rasmus Hoijlund
I genuinely believe with a pre-season under RA, Cunha playing behind him, (and possibly Mbuemo too) that he will come good (even as a different option/ sub)
Loaning him or selling (at a loss) this summer seems like bad business to me.
I think the same with Zirkzee. I may be wrong of course with these two but I think by the end of a pre-season under RA and into the new season, a few players are going to surprise us.
I'm clearly in the minority with these two judging by posts.
So which player/ players (that could leave this window) do fellow fans think can, or will have a turnaround in form?
(Apologies for this being badly worded/ written)
1.) 02 Jun 2025 23:06:10
Zirkzee has to stay IMO. With Cunha and potentially Mbeumo, he feeds those free lunches all day long.
2.) 03 Jun 2025 00:30:23
I agree Desi, I do think there is a player in Hojlund and he is worth persevering with, certainly for another season. There is no question he receives no where near enough service from his teammates.
Last season he had the second best conversion rate of goals to chances in the premier league, second only to Haaland. I know he has been poor this season, but I do think he has been hung out to dry somewhat with no support.
I do hope he has the opportunity to continue, maybe as backup to someone like Mateta, whom he can learn from.
3.) 03 Jun 2025 00:57:29
Send him to sporting on loan for 2 years. He'd gain great experience buy victor from them and they can invest that money elsewhere.
4.) 03 Jun 2025 00:59:10
He will comeback from this season amd do well but it will be somewhere else.
5.) 03 Jun 2025 01:25:40
I have a lot of time for Rasmus, he had no service at all and I was furious with our so called creatives shooting from anywhere instead of feeding his runs. They also always choose a cut back cross instead of playing the first option challenging cross to the striker. Second half of the season I just think he lost his way. Fans started calling him out and the shirt weighed heavy.
Happy if he stays and we sign another striker, if we sign an automatic starter ahead of him that can only be good, because I do think he is pretty good with better service.
Some rumours surfacing that he could go to inter, no idea if true, but if true, could be best for all parties.
6.) 03 Jun 2025 04:39:40
I was backing Hoijlund early on in the year bemoaning the lack of service. But as the year went on and there was occasional service he was way off.
That may well be something that a few months of regular service will improve but I fear that to keep him will put us on the back foot from day one. We don’t want another year of that.
BUT
We absolutely have to stop walking the ball into the area and cross the bloody ball more often. Watch “All the Goals on MUTV and see the difference. More excitement, more chances and more goals!
7.) 03 Jun 2025 06:55:09
He’s rubbish. Get rid.
8.) 03 Jun 2025 06:57:03
He can’t hold the ball up, he can’t win a ball in the Air, he wrestles and losses every time and left sitting on his arse, he got no strikers intellect, his runs are delayed action, he can’t hit a barn door, he got the ego of a Ronaldo but the feet of a Donkey
Even the stats of the first season are a joke, look at who those goals come again and the context of those matches
He is 1 in 6-8 striker at very best, even in Italy he was same….
If and a big if, if offer comes in he got to go.
9.) 03 Jun 2025 07:30:04
Heard Hoiland staying and if Bruno leaves eze is our target.
10.) 03 Jun 2025 08:20:26
Rasmus won’t be staying, if offer comes in he gone
No point in him staying, he is a very very poor striker, no amount of stats can change the facts.
11.) 03 Jun 2025 10:56:23
I had faith, but it has evaporated over the last 6 months. He may turn out to be a great player, but might be more suited to another league.
12.) 03 Jun 2025 11:07:53
I think it's fair to say this season has been diabolical and many strikers would have struggled in this team. Really hoping that we can see some rewards from actual coaching, as it's going to be impossible to sell every single player that has poor/ zero form and/ or currently doesn't fit the system. Seeing what RA and his team can do with current misfits to turn their fortunes around is something that is just as/ more important than the signings we make.
13.) 03 Jun 2025 12:17:55
You could coach Rasmus till the cows come home, he is 22 and gone backwards, he shows no traits of ever being a decent striker let alone a top striker.
Needs to be gone for himself as much as us…. another 70 million wasted because I doubt he will make half of that now.
14.) 03 Jun 2025 14:27:15
I seem to remember he did alright when coached by RVN. After he left Rasmus went downhill. I may have those dates wrong but I have to question how our strike force are being coached.
15.) 03 Jun 2025 15:46:28
You need the right level of natural ability for any coach to enhance that, Rasmus is void of many attributes needed to be a decent striker.
16.) 03 Jun 2025 18:54:18
German, your view is so clouded and negative on Rasmus that I don't believe you could have a clear thought about it.
The striker in a team often represents the failings of the whole team, not just their own. Haaland looked bang average in a poor city team this season in many games. But he is considered by many one of the best around. Our best crossing this year came from hoylund himself, the only one who tried to play the ball between the defense and keeper. Totally agree that he had a few opportunities towards the end of the season where he could have done better. But early season he had zero service and was ignored by everyone. He will be a good player, he is still young and improving. Not his fault that utd made him our only striker.
17.) 03 Jun 2025 20:58:26
Dodgy. Helmets views on life are clouded with negativity.
18.) 03 Jun 2025 21:56:53
German I agree we'll be lucky to make half what we paid for him if we sell him. Also is 22 the age where we decide if a player can cut it or not?
I feel collectively as United fans we're too impatient and tougher on our youngsters than other clubs seem to be.
People mention Gyokeres. He was at Coventry and lit up the Portuguese league under RA and his staffs tutelage. Look at the Sporting side RA had at his disposal, they were coached into title winners.
Isn't this what we were all hoping for when we got RA? To get this squad into shape and unlock the potential of what we already have?
07 Aug 2016 06:56:10
Just to get away from anything Pogba or Rooney related, was just wondering who everyone feels was the most under-rated player for our great club. I'll get started by saying Ronny Johnsen, i remember him being a classy defender who kept it simple and never seemed to get the same praises as your war horse defenders of the Pearce, Keown ilk. To me, he would've been more appreciated if he was playing in this day and age.
1.) 07 Aug 2016 07:44:40
For me it's Paul Scholes. He's one of the best midfielders to ever kick a ball but you will rarely hear him mentioned with the Zidanes Iniesta and xavis of this world. I think it's because of his down to earth character
2.) 07 Aug 2016 07:58:52
Dennis Irvine.
3.) 07 Aug 2016 07:59:05
*irwin.
4.) 07 Aug 2016 08:06:08
Not old enough to have witnessed football properly back in the day so for me it has to be ji sung park, did a lot of dirty work and had a massive engine, the lad would be running for the full 90 and played every game as if it was his last. A player who truly felt privelleged to wear the famous red.
5.) 07 Aug 2016 08:30:54
I agree with trumours fully. No complaints, no arrogance, team player and always giving 100%. If only some if not all were/ are like him.
6.) 07 Aug 2016 09:14:15
Michael Carrick.
7.) 07 Aug 2016 09:16:58
Agree with Denis Irwin. Everyone knew what a good player he was, but because he was a quiet, unassuming left back he probably never got the recognition he deserved until after he retired.
Best full back we've ever had in my opinion, and scored a hell of a lot of goals too, as well as setting up many too. But most importantly, he could defend, and very very well.
8.) 07 Aug 2016 09:25:00
Denis irwin for me too.
9.) 07 Aug 2016 09:27:26
Definitely agree with Dennis Irwin, Mr reliable a great servant to the club.
10.) 07 Aug 2016 09:31:17
Paul scholes!
Zidane said scholes was the best he'd ever played against and best in the wrkd.
11.) 07 Aug 2016 09:44:02
during an interview zidane was asked what it feels like to be the best midfielder in the world. he replied ' i don't know ask Paul scholes'.
12.) 07 Aug 2016 10:02:29
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for me. Wasn't the first choice starter yet never complained, never asked for a pay rise, always said he was just happy to be playing football for the biggest club in the world. Written off as a poacher by people but played anywhere he was asked, and of course gave us 1999 too. True legend and such a nice guy.
13.) 07 Aug 2016 10:26:49
The Gunnar for me too. Great striker, great guy, great team player.
14.) 07 Aug 2016 10:26:51
Irwin GNeville and ole.
All great pros and great ambassadors for their club and for football in general.
Never really in the headlines for the wrong reasons but often in the headlines for the right reasons.
Good shout on Ronny Johnson. Butt Duxbury Styles Carrick Buchan and of course Scholes are all worthy of mentions in this thread IMO.
15.) 07 Aug 2016 10:58:56
Edwin Van der Sar.
16.) 07 Aug 2016 10:59:01
no one going for s bruce.
17.) 07 Aug 2016 11:11:16
My first thought was of Scholes or Irwin, but then I thought about it and realised that we never fully appreciated them until they were gone but that their talent has been appreciated and they are recognised as true greats in hindsight.
For me this question should make you think. So for me players like Solskjear, Sheringham, Park, Butt, P. Neville ect should be the names that come up.
For me its Ole followed closely by Park. But that probably plays more to my age than anything else.
18.) 07 Aug 2016 11:22:50
Brucie is a good call but I think irwin was the best full back I've ever seen and his set pieces were fantastic as well God only knows what he would be worth in this market.
19.) 07 Aug 2016 11:29:31
Van der sar is a brilliant call! Won us the champs league.
20.) 07 Aug 2016 11:34:12
Denis irwin all day long. The best.
21.) 07 Aug 2016 11:52:22
Irwin for me.
Honorable mentions: Scholes, Solskjaer and Park.
22.) 07 Aug 2016 12:25:21
List is endless in all honesty it's like a thank you speech at a wedding someone will always be left out😀.
23.) 07 Aug 2016 11:48:01
Billy Meredith.
24.) 07 Aug 2016 13:44:26
You guya forgot Anderson hahahha. I think it has to be Carrick or Ji Sung Park.
25.) 07 Aug 2016 13:59:44
I'll show my age and say Nobby Stiles.
26.) 07 Aug 2016 14:42:17
As my profile says Irwin for me, but also a special mention for Darren Fletcher. Not a big name signing, but just got on with it. Was a big miss in the champions league final against barca.
I also wish we could find another ole or Park Ji Sung. True professionals. I also rate the much maligned Patrice evra. To make the effort to understand the club history to have pride in the badge and what it means just shows what a classy individual he is in this era of unthinking oiks.
27.) 07 Aug 2016 16:49:10
O'Shea, so many gaps he plugged and such vital goals he scored.
28.) 07 Aug 2016 18:20:51
Showing my age a bit here but lived some of the players from the seventies especially Martin Buchan Steve Coppell and Sammy McIlroy.
31 Jul 2025 05:09:55
Sesko and Hoijlund are the same age with the latter having the benefit of acclimatising to a new country/ league for two years and the benefit of a pre-season under RA, the former reportedly having a very high ceiling but an inconsistent last couple of seasons albeit in an inconsistent team.
With Cunha and Mbuemo either side of the striker I have higher hopes for Hoijlund and higher hopes for a new ST (be it Sesko or anyone else) than I did when we had Garnacho and Rashford. I'd hope that we keep Rasmus as we need to ADD a striker, not necessarily replace one, however with PSR constraints and trying to get Sesko before Newcastle have the funds to sign him (presumably needing to sell Isak first) .
I just hope RA keeps and let's go of who he wants to and the club are trying to fulfil HIS vision of the squad. We need to back him, this may be me being more hopeful than logical, but I just feel he's the one who IS and WILL instill our clubs values back and do the much needed and delayed 'open-heart surgery' we ran away from under Ralf Rangnick.
If Sesko is who Amorim wants, then Sesko is who we should get. If Hoijlund is who Amorim doesn't want, then Hoijlund should be moved on to facilitate future signings.
I can see a lot of positive changes in the pre-season (yes pre-season I know) games in terms of attitude and tactics.
In Ruben I trust
In Ruben I trust.
26 Jul 2025 01:11:28
Swaps rarely happen. Let's just focus on getting Garnacho (and his brother) out of the door first so we can decide on our terms the best signing the manager wants.
21 Jul 2025 02:13:38
I hope he absolutely smashes it to the point where Barcelona will look like knobs if they don't sign him after the loan season. Win win for all but wishful thinking.
21 Jul 2025 02:12:27
I think he would've been a fantastic signing for us. But he's said he wants Arsenal and that is the line. We shouldn't even be entertaining the idea of signing him now. Let's carry on with the theme of the last three signings please, that being players that want US over other clubs, it must be a prerequisite for United signings.
08 Jul 2025 07:35:11
Absolutely the right decision. Would rather not have the distractions than the money it would bring.
22 Aug 2025 07:08:12
With Rashford at Barcelona and Garnacho with one foot out the door, there will be no team leaks this season.
06 Aug 2025 09:30:21
Exactly this. Competition for places makes us stronger. Also for the £30m valuation going around it would make no sense whatsoever when we would still need to replace him. Plenty of other players to offload before him so we can get a MID and/ or GK (hopefully both) in before the window closes.
01 Aug 2025 06:46:43
I mean hey, if it helps you sleep at night. he's shocking, so is Liam Delap. Looks like Liverpool will get Isak, awful signing too, worst of the bunch. I'll reserve my judgement of Sesko to see if he signs for us first.
31 Jul 2025 05:58:09
I feel many on here forget about coaching. What good coaching and a better environment can bring out of a player. I love a new signing as much as the next guy but the above mentioned can make present players who have had an average time so far seems like new signings. I'm not saying Hoijlund is going to get 20 a season, but feel he will benefit from RA and his team of coaches. I also think there will be a few others that will hopefully feel like new signings due to RA. He has a good track record of developing and coaching young players. I'm genuinely looking forward and positive for next season under Ruben to see who else he can transform.
26 Jul 2025 01:48:34
I agree with Oakbark. We have to set ourselves realistic expectations for our rebuild. We're in a sticky situation with the players we need to move on, this dictates our ability in the market.
We should focus on a GK and midfielder first, teams run right through us. What's the point of making the same mistakes again with a striker (getting anybody in for the sake of it) . We have (hopefully) addressed the issues of creating and scoring with Cunha and Mbuemo. Maybe, just maybe Hoijlund may benefit from players either side of him that actually look up as opposed to the selfishness of Rashford and Garnacho.
CM and GK for me needs to be sorted first before a ST, against popular opinion I know but that's just my two rupees.
