Sorry, not a post about United, but thoughts on Newcastle being salty about behaviour of Isak, to then buy Wissa who did the exact same thing?

It’s standard footballing hypocrisy.

Neither player comes away from this looking good. But the difference is that Newcastle’s reputation has taken a hit too. I just don’t understand why they didn’t just negotiate with Liverpool from the start, and get their agreement to step away from Ekitike in exchange for selling Isak. Would have saved everyone a lot of trouble.

I know I might be stupid for asking, but I genuinely don't know why players need the remainder of their contract paying in order to move clubs? Has this always been the case? Seems mental to pay future wages when they'll be paid by another club.

I think we only did it with AWB as we activated his one year option and then sold him. It was to facilitate the move.
Not really the same situation with Sancho and Antony who just need to leave.

I think the issue is that no clubs are willing to pay them the same inflated wages that we do. If they leave, they earn £50k+ less every week, so they insist that we pay them the difference (or at least some of it) to make up for the fact that they’ll be taking a pay cut. We could of course say no, but they know that we need the money from the sale, and that a transfer fee minus the payoff is probably better for us than having no transfer fee and having to pay all of their wages for the remainder of their contract.

This is what happens when you give average players huge contracts.

They're being asked to move on, so they don't want to lose their future earnings. It's essentially a payoff to leave. Not unusual and players are well within their rights.

4.) 31 Aug 2025 16:24:55
Players rule the roost now. It is mental like you say that somebody wants paying to leave, especially as said players want to leave anyway. Problem is they have a massive contract (more than they deserve) and when the next team wants to reduce their wages they feel entitled to the shortfall. It's not like they are on a couple hundred a week, these are multi million pound contracts so they aren't going to feel the drop. Imagine telling your boss you want to leave Tesco to go work at asdas but asdas only want to pay you 11 quid an hour and Tesco were paying you 13 quid an hour so you want them to pay the shortfall. You would get told to f off!

I don't think it's uncommon, a contract is agreed to pay a player a set amount over a period of time. Legally they are entitled to the whole of the sum if the club decides to end the contract early.

Normally I think there are some agreements made between the player, and both the buying and selling club. But that's going to be context driven.

Danny,

We have them a contract though, they have always ruled the roost as it’s contract law. It’s also nothing like Tesco where you wouldn’t be on a fixed term contract.

If the player hands in an official transfer request they would forego the payment but as he hasn’t he can claim it from the club, it’s to protect contracts and it’s our fault for overpaying another bang average player.

Think the biggest problem is with psr now you can't afford to pay a player that 4 or 5 million payoff anymore.

Any thoughts on Wissa? Only one bid from Newcastle and he now be forcing Brentfords hand slightly. £35m to £40m may be enough.

Apparently he wants Champions league football.

2.) 31 Jul 2025 23:30:12
Having lost two of their best players to us and Arsenal I don't see Brentford can afford to lose their only tested striker. If they get relegated the fee received for Wissa will be no consolation.

3.) 31 Jul 2025 23:37:16
The silence is deafening DG!
Not quite what we are after for a number of reasons. I do like him, in his current team, but his antics to force a move are the biggest negative IMO.

He's a good player and one I'd certainly be happy to have at United. Proven EPL scorer and has an excellent link up with our new signing Mbeumo.

If we sign Sesko and Højlund leaves as part of the deal then I think we should still be looking at signing a more experienced EPL striker to rotate with Sesko. Who is the same age as Højlund and has many of the same weaknesses (lack of experience and consistency) .

Signing someone like Wissa or Mateta, both of whom have a good track record in the EPL and are 28 years old with a good amount of experience, along with both potentially being available for less than 40m, would make a lot of sense as someone to take the pressure off of Sesko.

5.) 01 Aug 2025 12:12:22
By the same token, Mbeumo interview in the week says he loves to play alongside Watkins….! Or we only using selective hearing when it suits the Red tints.

I love the signings of Cunha and Mbeumo, but starting to think we've not boxed clever.

Buy one of the above, and rotate Bruno and Mount in the other position. Zirkzee will also be an option. Then use the money to buy a holding midfielder and a 2nd goalkeeper to allow Lemmens time to settle in.

Would Hojlund then done a job for one year with a more settled team behind him?

I read rumours when it was done, that Sesko was the choice of the higher ups and RA wanted Watkins. Can not help but wonder now if this is true and RA is making a point.

New to this site, but would Martinez work in CM? Leaving Maguire, De Ligt, Heaven, Yoro, Shaw to fight it out at the back.
