Apparently the big announcement is di Maria. I can't say I'm thrilled at that but there you go.

MrE

1.) Don't mind Di Maria. but 30mill tops.

2.) Some diddy reporter is adamant Vidal is signing and has said it all along, I'll take Di Maria Vidal Rojo and Blind but I am greedy

3.) Why does it matter how much we pay for him? As long as it doesn't impact on other players it shouldn't matter.

4.) I'll say it again the big announcement is rooney as captain!

5.) I agree syd I don't get why fans get so caught about the money. di maria is world class and he is the type of signing most fans moan about us not making. Just pay the money and get a cm and def and we are sorted for now.

noa

6.) Did anybody watch the World Cup? Against Switzerland in the last 16 Di Maria gave the ball away 30+ times in the 90 minutes before extra time. Granted he scored the winner in extra time but against decent opposition there wouldn't have been extra time with somebody giving the ball away that often, especially a player like him who then doesn't bother trying to win it back.

Not sure why everyone is excited about Di Maria? Maybe for 10 million as a squad player but other than that why bother, why are Madrid so keen to get rid of him??

7.) 13 Aug 2014 07:56:01
Many posters complained last year that we lacked pace and attacking penetration.

I believe that di Maria is exactly the kind of player we need to add power and pace to our attacking options and alongside Mata and Rooney will prove to be a pretty formidable attacking and counter attacking side

Blind and Rojo would be great additions to a squad which assuming we get Vidal and or Strootman too, will give us every chance of a Champions League spot back and even challenge for the title

8.) 13 Aug 2014 08:11:26
Its not so much the money although I do think he's over priced. I'm not a fan and don't see how he's so highly rated. Personal opinion.

9.) Di Maria's record last season for goals and assists were up there with the best in Europe, much more than Nani, Young and Valencia combined so I think he'll be a great addition regardless of the money

10.) Big announcement was Ronney captain! Di Maria is undoubtably a quality player but where would he fit in the new system and at whos expense?

11.) Janujaz gets giggsy number 11 is the big news coming out today

12.) I would be over the moon with the signing, he's world class!
Can play right or center mid as well.

13.) Agree with the post above, moan when were not after marquee signings. Moan when we are. c'mon people_ Di Maria is the nuts, all of you were calling for young to be sold. Personally, I think he's making the wing back position his own.

14.) If LVG wants the player we need to trust he has an idea of what position/role the player will be used in.

15.) Come on guys this is United. I am a massive fan and have been for 30 years now but I gave finally realised that we can't compete in the transfer market.or should I say don't want to.

Chelsea, Man City, Barca, Madrid, Bayern and now even Arsenal to a degree identify a player and then buy them it's not rocked science. We link ourselves with every player on the planet, Woodward then talks his usual rubbish, sales go up then he vanishes from the planet having done his job of making the club money.

Who has seen him since that interview when he was going to rock the world with blockbuster transfers? Crawled back under his rock I am afraid.

Get real guys when did United last go out and buy a top class player? Will be no different this year.or next.

16.) Clarkdog, di Maria is only a squad player and worth £10m?

17.) I was at the game last night and the amount of water sprayed on the pitch before the game and at half time suggests LVG wants us to play fast inter changing football, now with Young he's poor and decision making I mean all he did was wait for a player to get on him then he would try to pass, the first time he played the ball early Rooney got the pen but 9/10 he's bad which is a shame because he can deliver a final ball. From what I saw we do need someone fast and able to commit the last defender and deliver is Di Maria the man who knws but from what I've seen we don't have that.

18.) Of course money matters, what a stupid post to suggest that it doesn't!
Would you be happy if was a PSG fan having paid £50m for Luiz?!?!
Paying £50/55m for really a better version of Nani is not good business what so ever. I have said before, he gives the ball away ALOT. Also, where would you play him, who would you drop, what formation would you play?
I think he's a good player, not one of the best, but also is NOT worth that money what so ever and comes with too many questions.

19.) 13 Aug 2014 13:27:07
Again its personal preference. Personally I think vidal is a bigger priority.

And where does di Maria fit. he's not a wingback. he's not going in midfield ahead of Herrera or Mata or even vidal if he signs. We won't switch to a 433 till next year as this year the squad isn't right for it. i'd rather bring in vidal, cuadrado and either blind or rojo to sort our pressing issues then next summer go for Reus.

20.) RedAndy, what makes him any better than a squad player? He gave the ball away over 30 times in 90 minutes at the World Cup, Scholes gave it away 30 times in his career.

Yes loads of assists for Madrid last year, how do you judge that? In a league where only two teams compete barring the one off last year, also he is creating chances on a poor league for the likes of Ronaldo who converts most chances so helps Di Maria look better.

Me and you would have 10+ assists in la liga in the Madrid team. If he is so good why are they selling him?

21.) He is too one-footed and predictable, doesn't work hard enough, is worse through the middle than both Mata and Kagawa (and personally I'd rather give Januzaj game time to improve him), and is far too poor defensively to play as a wingback.

I don't care if it's 50 pounds or 50 million, I don't think he would be a good signing for us.

22.) 13 Aug 2014 14:09:02
Would rather have Marco Reus than Di Maria, he's a better player imo and he would be cheaper.

23.) 13 Aug 2014 19:59:47
Clarkdog7 you say he created chances in a poor league?

I'm near sure 3 teams out of 4 where in the champions league semis last year. how many English teams were there? Think that speaks volumes for itself. Premier league is the mos exciting due to the pace of the games and the smaller pitches. but when it comes to the standards of fitness and the football being played the spanish league is way superior I'm afraid ATM.

24.) No Robbo.

The quality in the top 4 or 5 teams is very good, but outside that the quality is actually pretty poor.

In other words, the players on his side are excellent, but most of the opposition are very poor. That makes for pretty easy assists.

25.) Clueless, those who don"t see Di maria for what he is. One one the best wingers in work football and I leave to the two clubs to sort out what is the right fee. A player who will get those lazy supporters who boo our own players of their a. and get them buzzing. 30 years supporter or not you have no no idea.

According to Portuguese paper a bola we've signed gaitan for cash plus bebe and a Dutch journalist is reporting buttner to dynamo Moscow.

MrE

1.) Buettner leaving would be a good indication that we will 100% be signing a LB this summer. Obviously Shaw is the prime target, so the moment Buettner agrees a move away, then we have probably secured Shaw.

2.) Buttner off to Russia or somesuch place according to his agent, who also said we are in for Shaw still and Evra new contract

3.) Would prefer Blind for about £12 million or maybe shaw too as Blind can play in a variety of positions and allow us to offload Evra and his wages

12 Jan 2014 14:13:41
And Moyes is at the Juventus game, supposedly watching Astori?

MrE

1.) I would like to think he is there for a final check before a big bid for Vidal. Not hopeful though.

2.) He's probably thinking if only we had Pogba. Hopefully it's Vidal he's after.

3.) I hope it's not vucinic.

4.) Tevez?

5.) Yeah well probably bid 50 million for Tevez when they want 60

6.) It's likely that he's there to see more than one player.

Did anyone see Pogba's comments the other day where he stated he left because of SAF and that doesn't mean that he'll never play for United again?

7.) I read he could be watching Pogba. imagine if we signed him think i'd c*m in my pants!

Not likely though

8.) I hope to god its Vidal and he's not just there for the game! Be brilliant if we can get him and coentrao in for chelsea game

9.) I believe it was to watch Marchisio. Moyes must be keen to go in person.

10.) Really hope we see some movement this week . In r out!

11.) I hope we offer a massive to go to turn down offer for vidal, we are desperate for that kind of player

12.) Whats that dustbin?

13.) Ment to say, I hope we offer a massive amount that's too good to turn down to get Vidal

14.) He's having the warm treatment like Rooney .

15.) The **** that is Pogba's agent was at the Swansea game last night

16.) Conte apparently said after the game that United want to buy Marchisio, but that he's not leaving the club until the summer

17.) Funny isn't it? Ask the fans and we would be looking at Vidal or pogba (who I don't see an OT reunion for) but it appears our fearless leader has his predecessors ability of not being able to spot top class central midfielders and will end up paying over the odds for the lesser talent of marchesio. I'm getting a feeling of dejavu here. Oh yeah we did the same this summer with fellaini. Please be vidal. Also while I'm here it appears the glazers new years resolution was to spend money. I know shocking right? They have just appointed a very highly rated coach at their NFL team who was attracting a lot of attention from other teams and would not have come cheap. Very un-glazer I know and whilst I'm not suggesting you burn your anti glazer scarfs yet it appears they could have had a revelation. Fingers crossed!

18.) 13 Jan 2014 03:34:07
You have to wonder would moyes have been better staying at everton, the guy is on a hiding to nothing, fergerson had an aging team which needed half the players replacing. Without Rooney we would be in a worse situation. I just think the older players know their time is up. Also when is zaha going to get a game

19.) Any idea ed002 who he is watching?

{Ed002's Note - The club maintain an interest in Vidal.}

12 Jan 2014 13:49:02
Reports P Nev is @ the Rayo Vallecano vs Getafe game, who could he be watching?

MrE

1.) Looking like 19-year-old attacking midfielder Saul Niguez

2.) Lisandro López, Pablo Sarabia, Saúl Ñíguez or Lass Bangoura - would be my guess!

3.) It is supposedly Saul Niguez.

4.) Also had scouts at Benfica v Porto

08 Nov 2013 12:51:19
Couple of questions for the eds. I've heard that Madrid negotiated a first option on Gundogan when they sold Sahin back Dortmund and are preparing a 30 million euro offer for summer. Is there much truth in that? Secondly is there any clubs interested in Young, Nani or Anderson? Thanks {Ed002's Note - There is interest in the player from RM (as you have been told repeatedly) but how would you negotiate a "first option" on a player without that player's contract being modified and a significant price paid to the player to compromise his future?}

MrE

1.) 08 Nov 2013 13:55:07
I didn't think it likely that's why I asked. Cheers.

I agree with most of that fresh. Unfortunately regards to Rafael he's just becoming so unreliable that sadly his time is coming to an end. We can't wait for him to come good and keep using Valencia as a filler.

Pereira could come back and bite us as I think he would do well in a league like serie a. Then we'll have everyone whos never watched the reserves come on and tell us what a mistake we've made

MrE

1.) 27 Feb 2015 17:13:37
Young players come and go I suppose, Pereira is not as special as Pogba but he is a good player. Will probably end up on a similar career path to someone like De Bruyne. As regards to Rafael, I know he has his fitness issues, but perhaps as second choice right back he would be able to stay sufficiently fit. He would be a better right back back up than Valencia is. Clyne as the starter and Rafael as a fill-in / cup games would be excellent.

2.) 27 Feb 2015 23:23:16
Not sure how managed to put this on a separate page.

Do you think he would accept being the back up when he's been, nominally, the first choice for the last few seasons?

I like the guy, but sometimes things don't work out how you wish and the lack of a consistent right back is holding us back. Not as much as other areas maybe, but it doesn't help.

3.) 28 Feb 2015 02:06:18
I think De Bruyne is a very special talent Fresh. I don't think Parreria will reach his level. People only ever remember an inconsistent De Bruyne who played sparingly at Chelsea during Mourinhos bedding in year and was played to accommodate Oscar and Hazard.

He is an incredible player and would be right up there with Hazard if Chelsea hung onto him in my opinion. I would take the lad in a heartbeat.

20 Feb 2015 16:33:25
Pretty good column from Gary Neville today, partly written as a fan albeit one who's played for the club he supports at the highest level.

This isn't a sack the manager post but I am concerned.

Di Maria looks a shadow of the player we saw last season. Falcao and van persie look nothing like they were 24 months ago and one needs dropping and bothe moving on come summer.

Rooney with all the will in the world is not and never will be a midfielder. He needs to be up front with pace on the flanks and vision behind him.

Last year we were all moaning about how bad our left hand side was and we went out and spent 150 million making signings to fix it and now this season our right hand side has gone down the pan.

As I said this isn't a sack the manager, particularly as there's no replacement. But come end of may, if top four and the fa cup has not been achieved it needs looking at. If there's a definite plan it needs work on.

It comes to something when even Mike Bassett sorry Big Sam its a long pass call me Allerdici is making cracks.

MrE

1.) 09 Feb 2015 14:08:01
Di Maria struggled in his first season at Madrid.

RVP needs to be sold IMO.

It is still too early to say about Falcao. His general game play improves week by week but he isn't putting chances away like we know he can. He missed a sitter yesterday.

I've just got off the phone from talking to my wife's nan's second cousin's nephew who heard it from his postman who got told it by the barmaid in the dog and duck who was told by her hairdresser who had it on good authority from her landlady who was informed by big john the taxi man who had a passenger who was told by someone at the club that we may be signing sneijder tomorrow

MrE

01 Feb 2015 11:42:58
One thing I've noticed so far on our transfer activity is everything is focused on getting fringe players out. So far we've sold Michael Keane, had deals collapse for vermijl and fletcher and then there's Anderson. Fletcher and Anderson are particularly telling as their on good wages but don't feature. Seems like someone's trying to clear the decks.

MrE

1.) Yeah MrE, I heard him say the other day he is "not looking to bring players in only to sell players".

2.) 01 Feb 2015 13:08:48
Beast I wonder if that's something from above. We did get an ffp warning regards the wage bill and fletcher and Anderson are on over 100k a week easy with minimal or zero contribution this season. Sounds to me like Woodward is trying to free up some room on the wage bill for summer.

3.) 01 Feb 2015 16:59:36
Anderson and Fletcher are NOT on over £100k a week.

4.) 01 Feb 2015 22:35:39
Ozzy I meant their combined wages not each. Combined wage is nearer 120k

12 months ago juve wouldn't have sold for all the tea in china, that was their stance. Despite the mega bucks on offer and the fact his sale would have let them bring in two top players. Now suddenly their prepared to sell. I think his knee issues haven't cleared up and they think they can mug us like Bayern did with Hargreaves. Personally i'd steer clear. Just my opinion.

A lot of normal people watch the epl because its well marketed and now foreign fans have more of an idea on who teams are because of this compared to 20-30 years ago. Sky changed everything.

But some teams are more well known because of their history in the game. United are world famous because of Busby, the babes, Munich, '68, Law, Best, Charlton, Fergie, Beckham, The 90's domination of the premier league, the treble, Ronaldo.

Liverpool are world famous because of shankly, paisley, Keegan, dalgliesh, Barnes, rush, their total domestic domination over two decades, the 4 European cups in less than a decade and sadly Hillsborough.

Teams become more famous, and more likely to be followed by foreign fans because of either great success or great tragedy. Both ourselves and Liverpool have had both success and tragedy. City have never had either continued sustained success or triumph in Europe or tragedy so they are less well known. Although sky and recent success is changing this.

Most foreign players only watch English games if they have a friend playing for one of the teams. Am ex club mate or national team buddy. They don't watch it for the technical aspects.

Personally I'm with Danny I don't think he's committed enough and I fc we could get the money back i'd take it.

Van gaal likes a 6 who can dictate the tempo. Currently that's Carrick. I'm not sure that's pogbas game. For me there's 5 contenders.

Strootman (not my choice and injuries may scupper it)

Gundogan (again injuries not useful, also maybe not available)

Koke (but I expect a lot of competition)

Veratti (but probably unavailable and if he does move I expect him to go to Turin as part of the pogba deal)

Clasie (not the flashest name but worth a look)

Someone also mentioned ward-prowse who is worth monitoring.

One of the worst players I've ever seen pull on an England shirt. Wouldn't have him if he offered to play for free.
