Question for Ed 002, I know your akways busy, but when you have time, reading between the lines of a comment you made the other day about Raphina and enquiring about one of his agents other players. Would that player we enquired about be Edmond Tapsoba?

Supasub

{Ed002's Note - No, not Tapsoba.}

1.) 01 Jun 2021 06:41:10
Didnt know Deco had become and agent.

2.) 01 Jun 2021 22:00:17
How about a game of Hangman Ed so we can guess which other player we enquired about? Or is it unimportant?

{Ed002's Note - It is unimportant.}

31 Jan 2021 14:01:02
Just like to say that we seem to lack any composure, patience and shape when we move forward when attacking during a match when needing to take the lead. Counter attacking is fine when you are winning games but teams like Liverpool and Man City gradually move up the pitch when they are searching for the 1st goal, they then move forward a lot quicker/ long ball when they counter. We just seem unable to pin teams back and just try and get the ball forward as quick as possibly generally resulting in lack of options and giving the ball away cheaply. That is down to the coaching and game management.

Supasub

1.) 31 Jan 2021 15:07:41
Agree, we lack proper structure going forward.
There seems to be a lack of direction how the moves needs to be constructed.

2.) 31 Jan 2021 23:28:59
I think team is progressing well. Really like the way we are playing. Unfortunately Rashford and Martial are so inconsistent. Once we get right wing sorted and get Rashford playing from the left then we will start winning things.

3.) 01 Feb 2021 07:19:30
Jgb19031976 really? I guess a lot of people just have this idea that sorting out the right wing is going to help this team go and win things. Well it would certainly help balance the squad but we need more than just the right players.

Unless the manager is capable of utilizing and bringing the best out of the players available to him and brings in a more progressive approach to his tactics and the style of play the team is going to go through phases of both good and bad performances and ultimately not win anything.

4.) 01 Feb 2021 19:26:22
The problem is that Rashford was looking more and more like a top class LW around Oct/ Nov/ Dec, then we moved him to RW to accommodate Pogba.

Every man, woman and child knows that our best side is EITHER Fred/ McTom alongside Pogba in the middle, with Rashford left, Greenwood right and Bruno playing off of Cavani, yet for some reason we now play Rashford on the right, where he looks like a poor man’s Nani.

5.) 03 Feb 2021 00:51:23
This aged well.

6.) 03 Feb 2021 10:01:10
Burnley,

We just don’t attack enough and never score haha.

7.) 03 Feb 2021 18:10:10
Well what can I say, I rest my case, albeit aided by an early sending off we actually pinned a team back and sometimes went back to go forward, and look what happens. We will see if they can continue and impose more in future games when needing to take the lead.

Happy New year to all eds and posters old and new. Any chance of a inkling of a surprise transfer to us this January Ed002? Something to warm the cockles of my heart this grey Dorset day as I'm covering my wife's charming cafe having avoided any alcohol for the last few months including last night. I am plying myself with high grade caffeine this morning accompanied with a smorgasbord of green teas and a bacon sandwich.

Supasub

{Ed002's Note - Joao Mario will maybe emerge as a favoutite for midfield.}

1.) 01 Jan 2018 12:55:11
Are we targeting only one midfielder or two ed? . By us going after Mario means the end for milinkovic Savic and Soler or are these two transfers unrelated? .

{Ed002's Note - Why do you have to try and complicate everything?}

2.) 01 Jan 2018 13:52:46
Cheers Ed002 and a Happy New Year to you!

3.) 01 Jan 2018 13:51:06
Brilliant, thank you Ed002, cheered me up after enduring a shopping trip to the sales with the missus (part of the bargain reached to baggsie the big TV for Everton match later)

Does anyone have any info or opinions about Mario, apart from his penchant for Italian food? )

4.) 01 Jan 2018 14:02:09
I'll take Joao Mario. Think he a decent player who will fit well into the team. Will it be a loan with a view to buy or a transfer?

5.) 01 Jan 2018 16:01:45
No worries Ed. Happy new yr to everyone.

6.) 02 Jan 2018 11:41:58
Paper talk for me on Mario definitely can see Jose trying for Savic tho.

12 May 2017 20:40:36
Rumours that Renato Sanches is unsettled / Maybe available for transfer. Sorry ed not listened to sharkopod yet but wondered if a move was possible this summer or any inkling that this might be the case and that Bayern would let him leave for similar money in return?

Supasub

{Ed002's Note - He has been a disaster and if they could mug some club in to buying him they would - they are trying to get a replacement in. The player has not coped with the cultural change at all - Manchester United got lucky last year.}

1.) 13 May 2017 07:12:27
He's a 19 year old boy. Hopefully he will grow up to become the player he looks like he can be.

2.) 13 May 2017 08:56:40
Is he one of those players who are unwilling to adapt to a new country or is he homesick and will only ever be successful on the Iberian peninsula?

{Ed002's Note - It is not that he is unwilling it is that it can be very difficult to adapt where everything is cuturally different, where the language is a problem, where the food is different, where the weather is poor etc..}

3.) 13 May 2017 13:54:34
Never thought that joining Bayern was the best move for him, not surprised at all it hasn't worked out. Hopefully he get's back on track soon though, think he has great potential.

4.) 13 May 2017 14:32:19
I'd be delighted to have him. So dynamic, would compliment Pogba very well I think.

5.) 13 May 2017 15:04:24
Have you watched him this season fresh. He had a very good euros, was decent in the Portuguese league. Beyond that, he leaves a lot to be desired.

I'd rather a more experienced player with pedigree than sanches.

6.) 13 May 2017 16:00:44
He has so much potential but he just wasn't ready for such a high profile move. Probably lacks a bit of maturity. I watched a game on telly that he came on in, he looked lost. You're right ed, United definitely dodged a bullet there.
Hopefully he can get some good advice and make his next move right for him and realise his potential.

7.) 13 May 2017 16:56:19
25 games for a 19 year old at Bayern in his first season in a new country seems ok to me hope he is surplus and we take him cause the boy is a top talent but got to feeling he is playing understudy for next season its the Bayern way to ease talent in and let them grow. personaly i would like Nianggolon for midfield and if James Rodriguez is available him to. And Beloti looks perfect for the prem hope he on the radar but I know Jose will improve us dramatically no matter who the targets are, we have bags of cash and some big profile players leaving can't wait for the summer transfer window.

8.) 13 May 2017 18:52:17
I think he worth a chance for a reasonable fee, I wouldn't go over 25 million though, feel like Mourinho would look after him.

9.) 14 May 2017 08:23:41
Good point Shane - maybe the Portuguese connection would make him feel happier (though can't do anything about the rain! )

You'd think BM would've done more to help him settle in though, such as placing him with a Portuguese family/ privibding extra lessons at college. Maybe that's not how it works and I'm being naive - can't be easy for a young lad to adapt to a whole new situation, where everything would seem foreign.

10.) 14 May 2017 08:52:16
If he has struggled with language, food and weather then he will struggle just as much here so it probably wouldn't make sense spending big money on him right now. He may become great, he may not.

06 Jan 2017 12:07:46
Everton reportedly make a move for Manolas. wouldn't we be interested too if he's available unless other business is nearly done anyway.

Supasub

{Ed025's Note - he wants a move to a big club who are going places supasub.. :)

1.) 06 Jan 2017 12:48:22
He is a Briiliant player, Everton will do very well to sign him

{Ed025's Note - its just speculation at the moment mate but i agree that he would be a good signing..

2.) 06 Jan 2017 12:58:51
Ok get it Ed. At least the biggest club in Merseyside is a step up.

{Ed025's Note - nothing wrong with dreaming mate.. :)

3.) 06 Jan 2017 13:53:43
So not signing for everton then ed. Though on a serious note will you be able to afford him?

{Ed025's Note - we have loads of dosh CSM, not only moshiri but now usmanov wants a piece of us and hes richer than abramovic!, the futures bright mate... the future is blue.. :)

4.) 06 Jan 2017 14:36:48
You still got that church in part of goodison Ed? It's been a while since I've thought about it, an old Everton fan about 30 years ago used to tell me they wouldn't move which has always hampered increasing the size of the stadium.

{Ed025's Note - St lukes is still there supasub and it has always been a thorn in the side of any expansion to the ground, but that wont matter now as we will be getting a state of the art stadium at bramley moor dock in the near future mate..

5.) 11 Jan 2017 13:05:47
I would have thought a church being so close to Goodison, was rather handy, Ed025 :)

{Ed025's Note - sadly my prayers have not been answered noucamp...liverpool are still in the premier league mate.. :)

I thought we were going for a fine tweak in midfield this season and not relying on Mcfred? 1 CDM even though we don't have an ideal player to play there apart from Matic who can't play more than a couple of games in a row. We were obviously all passed the wrong memo. Why is it that VDB plays well in the week, gets taken off early due to the red card and then ends up on the bench today? Where is the continuity by installing Mctominey instead who unless I'm mistaken has been out injured recently.

Supasub

1.) 19 Sep 2021 14:49:58
Every 5 yard backwards pass that Fred nearly messes up, I feel more and more for Donny.

2.) 19 Sep 2021 16:50:37
Did you seriously think vDB has shown anything to believe he could have done the job today that McT did? With Ronaldo only tracking back rarely, Pogba and Fernandes not good defensively and wanting to attack with Shaw… we surely need more defensively minded midfielders? I don’t understand this obsession with vDB not playing when we have more most matches this year. So what?

3.) 19 Sep 2021 17:22:45
I'm not a fan of McFred but this season they have played together twice.

McFred Vs Leeds, we win 5-1.

Matic and Fred Vs Southampton, we drew 1-1.

Fred and Pogba Vs Wolves, we won 1-0.

Pogba and Matic Vs Newcastle, we won 4-1.

Fred and DvdB in the first half against Young Boys and we were winning 1-0. Then in the second half combinations between Fred, Pogba and Matic played in the pivot and we conceded 2 goals to lose the game 2-1.

McFred back Vs West Ham and we win 2-1. Probably should have had at least one penalty and been clear.

In both the games that McFred started we went behind and then found the grit to turn the game around and win it.

While the win today wasn't inspiring, we were clearly the better side. Something that couldn't be said against Southampton, Wolves or Young Boys when starting with a different midfield combination.

We played well enough against Newcastle with a different midfield partnership but then that was Ronaldo's first game back at Old Trafford and the atmosphere almost demanded a win.

I want to see Donny in the line as much as anyone, but he needs to prove he is better than McFred. As yet he hasn't.

4.) 19 Sep 2021 17:30:25
Because we paid a tidy sum for him under Ole's tenure. If he's not to be used the he's taking up a space for a player. We didn't sign a defensive minded/ cdm this summer because we didn't have the space for the player. Like ed002 said, a midfield player would have to move to make space. Having Mctominey on for the whole game when he's only come back from an injury/ surgery isn't the brightest bit of management. If I was Donny and I'm fit enough to play they come January, if nothing changes then I'd foxtrot Oscar. Mctominey didn't look fit enough even in the 1st half. Fred runs around a lot. If you think that is good enough then you carry on.

5.) 19 Sep 2021 21:00:52
I think there are a lot of people in the setup at football clubs more qualified to understand who needs to play in which role. I don't for a minute believe that fans should decide who should play or cry about a player who doesn’t. We should cry about not winning tittles and we do that! Insisting VDB needs to play as a fan is just baseless.

Ref the thread further down
If people want Conte because the crosses to Ronaldo and Cavani will start flowing how does that system work when we would have Greenwood at no. 9?

A cross is a last resort as it's generally considered a 50/ 50 or even less chance of keeping possession. The best teams of the last 15/ 20 years hardly ever crossed the ball. "If the ball was meant to be played in the air then God would have put grass in the sky". Be careful what you wish for if you think a manager who is out of a job is the answer.

Just for the record Ole isn't the right man either and should have been thanked at the end of his 1st season and moved on or given another role within the club, you can see by the way we play that we are neither aggressive enough, don't have enough intensity and there is not much of an attacking system to move the other side around and open them up.

Klopp, Guardiola, Nagelsmenn, Pochetinno, Blanc, Bielsa maybe Ancelotti should have been approached at the time after Ferguson in that sort of order and secured. I even think Mourinho would have done better had he came in immediately after Ferguson as I admit I wanted him at the club then.

Supasub

{Ed014's Note - how did TAA and Robertson get so many assists?

1.) 19 Sep 2021 11:39:33
Have we erased Beckham from our history? Pretty sure he crossed the ball and we had success.

2.) 19 Sep 2021 11:45:49
Year Liverpool won the league they had the most crosses in the league. City have topped crosses into box 7 times in part 9 years.

3.) 19 Sep 2021 11:49:02
Clearly there's different types of crosses. For example i'm sure yesterday Burnley put in a million crosses against Arsenal but they were all from so far out and done more in hope that they are hardly going to be effective.

The types of crosses Man City and Liverpool put in with variety and with more precision and closer to the opposition box have a much higher chance of being successful. Combine that with the high volume of crossing opportunities they get because of their quality and patterns of play, its a very successful tactics.

4.) 19 Sep 2021 11:18:28
We're they in the air ed? Or just the fact they almost make an attacking 5 in the system Liverpool play and they play the ball in or generally smash it across low. I'm not a stats man at all let alone headers but you know what I'm saying ed. Or maybe we should have kept Lukaku and bought Victor Moses and Julian Dicks when we had the chance.

{Ed014's Note - a huge variety mate but it’s something you just don’t do, Shaw endeavours too but that’s about it.

5.) 19 Sep 2021 11:53:57
City put more crosses in than any team.

6.) 19 Sep 2021 11:57:55
Yes Hotchpotch I've erased Beckham from our history at the turn of the century, just forgot to let you know. Unfortunately Peter crouch and Niall Quinn have retired so we can't be getting them now.

7.) 19 Sep 2021 12:18:24
I'm on about crosses in the air Ken. City rarely cross in the air, hardly at all. Does anybody read Op's anymore?

8.) 19 Sep 2021 12:31:30
Also TAA and Robertson take a lot of corners and wide set pieces ed. I'm not on about set pieces which a lot of the time will be in the air, I'm on about systems and an attacking way of playing from open play.

9.) 19 Sep 2021 12:36:39
Don't we hold the record for number of crosses in a game, Moyes era cannot remember who we played though.

10.) 19 Sep 2021 12:50:45
Not sure that I agree that a cross is a last resort, or a 50/ 50 which is a bizarre statement. Of course it depends on the quality of the cross, and the timing and effectiveness of both the intended recipient and the defender. Certain sides have a much higher success rate because they excel on both fronts. Certain sides have great crossers and no-one on the end, or a brilliant centre-forward and no-one to get it to them. But the two statements are frankly odd.

11.) 19 Sep 2021 12:50:56
A cross is a pass. To be successful it needs the right movement/ runners and accuracy. In and of itself it's neither good nor bad. The best teams have a variety of attacking methods. If they don't it will be easier to defend against them.

12.) 19 Sep 2021 12:58:20
I think there are many different types of crosses and that traditional data collection doesn't account for that.

I think when people say whipping crosses in for Ronaldo or Cavani I think most people are referring to high balls crossed in for the centre forward to head in a goal. Rather than whipped in low crosses for our forwards to run on to.

City and Liverpool provide many of the latter and few of the former as seen by how many (or more accurately in this case how few) headed goals City and Liverpool have scored.

The reality is very few centre forwards are going to consistently beat a centre back in the air, therefore high crosses are seen as not being particularly effective.

Think about it, would you fancy your chances of beating Maguire, VvD, Varane, Dias or any EPL centre back in the air.

Under Moyes we were prolific with crosses, managing the most crosses recorded in a single game at one point. But all of them were high balls for Rooney or RvP to attack and we drew the game 0-0. It was totally ineffective. Maybe if we had the current Ronaldo or Cavani in there they might have won a few of them, maybe even getting enough on one of them to actually make the keeper work to make the save.

I'm pretty sure when City are crossing the ball they weren't expecting Ageuro or Sterling to jump above the opposition CB's and power in a header.

My biggest bugbearwith people who want Conte are that they are often the same people who call Ole's football negative, pragmatic and reductive. They use that as a stick to beat Ole but would gladly welcome another manager who plays a more negative, reductive and pragmatic style if it means we win something.

If winning trophies and chasing glory are the single most important thing to you as a supporter of our club then fine, but own it. Don't stand behind this idea that you don't like Ole because of the style of play when in fact its just winning titles you want.

13.) 19 Sep 2021 13:03:56
I mostly agree with Supasub, crosses shouldn't be our main tactic, but tbh, I get mad sometimes when we have a chance to cross, but choose to pass the ball back and run in circles, just to keep possession.
Id rather we try and cross the ball and try getting a goal. If we miss and lose the ball, its not the end of the world.

14.) 19 Sep 2021 13:13:55
Pretty sure Ronaldo would be happy with a cross from wide areas. we signed a right winger to create chances for our front line, hopefully part of his role should be getting the ball into the box from the wing instead of passing back
Absolute nonsense that you can’t play winning football with crosses, we don’t do it and have won nothing lately. maybe we could try and find out
Re Greenwood hopefully he is watching Ronaldo and learning how to be a complete centre forward which involves some heading ability, we have seen on many occasions recently that our plan A does not always work. Adding some crossing and heading ability is still part of the wonderful game of football and would add an additional much needed attacking dimension.

15.) 19 Sep 2021 13:41:02
Well reading some of the replies then why don't we just go for Sean Dyche instead of having a hard on for Conte? Maybe if he were called Seanio Dycheo? The press/ media and a select group of fans would think it were a great idea. Sam Allardyce is also out of a job at the moment like Conte? Always an option.

16.) 19 Sep 2021 14:59:36
I would be interested to see what Dyche would do with better players and a bigger budget than he has at Burnley. Would he change tactics?

17.) 19 Sep 2021 23:10:53
Got it right today didn’t we, lovely lovely lovely.

18 Sep 2021 16:33:04
What's with the media love in with Conte? Do people not remember how Chelsea used to play? Yes he's passionate on the touchline but all they did was get it wide and cross it in. He wasnt that much better at Juventus.

Supasub

1.) 18 Sep 2021 17:13:21
Supasub

Must be those titles he wins. Didn’t Chelsea also win the league under him or am I not remembering right?

Leader and motivator, I would have him in place at OT tomorrow given his immediate availability. We should have a proper review and interview process because otherwise they would look at Conte and appoint Mark Robins.

We have stopped doing much crossing under Ole, it’s pass back inside, yet in Ronaldo and Cavani we have two great headers of the ball. If Conte arrived tomorrow I would fancy us for the league and CL, hell even the Grand National. Instead we will carry on as is, whilst Conte will end up at an ambitious club, win the league or a cup.

2.) 18 Sep 2021 18:11:55
If only we got it wide and crossed.
With ronaldo and Cavani in the mix, I don't understand how that is not a good tactic.

3.) 18 Sep 2021 19:13:33
Conte is a serial winner. Full stop.

4.) 18 Sep 2021 19:34:58
Mourinho had won a few trophies and Van Gaal had won a few trophies too. Doesn't mean it works. Conte would be a backward step. Why anyone thinks that Conte would do any better than the 2 managers I've mentioned doesn't make sense. Based on being a winner? And he won the league with Chelsea? Is that it?

5.) 18 Sep 2021 20:39:52
Jose Mourinho was a serial winner. Full stop.

6.) 18 Sep 2021 20:52:24
Conte would perhaps win a title, which ofcourse, isn't guaranteed, but then we would go 3 steps back, when he destroys the chemistry and leaves after his 2nd season.

7.) 18 Sep 2021 20:55:31
I don't think it's time to call the final curtain on Ole just yet.

But when it does happen I hope to god we stay away from Conte, and Simeone for that matter.

Both good coaches no doubt, but both will suffer the same fate as Jose. Which shouldn't be surprising as they are Jose 2.0 and 3.0.

Negative tactics, lots of bluster and bravado, but can cause issues in the dressing room.

Conte can't keep a job more than 3 year much like Jose. While Simeone only gets away with it because Atletico Madrid can't do any better. He'd not last 18 months at either Real Madrid or Barcelona.

Jose, Conte and Simeone play the same style of play as Allerdyce, Moyes and Bruce. The difference is they get to do it with much better players and are more successful at it.

8.) 18 Sep 2021 20:58:33
Ole has won what exactly?
Norwegian title?
Our great club is in safe hands!

06 Sep 2021 20:55:57
Ed002, do you drive a black Infiniti like a QX70? It's a very rare car and I passed one (Saturday I think) in Weymouth. I'm surprised you don't drive a Lexus RX.

Supasub

{Ed002's Note - The colour is called Malbec Black but in reality it is a dark aubergine colour. I don’t recall ever being in Weymouth. Currently in hiding in Brighton.]

A little bit of nostalgia, anyone here remember midweek when we had Sportsnight (BBC? ) and Midweek sport special? (ITV? ) . Also during the season you had the annual Soccer 6 indoor tournament. Ruel Fox for Norwich was a beast indoors. Bang average outdoors. All late 80's, very early 90's.

Yes supa I loved the soccer 6's always good to see out of shape ex pros playing like us mere mortals.

Manchester city are interested in him as 1 of a number of players to eventually replace fernandinho, someone I know was at the Lyon game just over a week ago to watch him and someone else for Lyon. This person who knows Paul Mitchell doesn't expect Paul Mitchell to come to us as a Dof either, not gospel just someone's opinion.

I don't like Maguire or how much we paid for him ed, but all clubs have players they've overpaid for (which I or anyone else can point out) apart from maybe Leicester. Or is it trendy to slag off united and their "rubbish" players?

Supasub

{Ed014's Note - there’s nothing trendy about it, if you can name another club that’s been mugged off to the level you have over players since Fergie left then you’ll have an argument.

City were on another level and No one would complain if they were 3 or 4 up first half, Liverpool just playing long ball. Some of the refereeing was farcical. It's like anfield dictate the decisions and Liverpool players have viagra drips in their arms for absolutely every throw in. How Bernado Silva didn't get Motm is beyond me. Best player on the pitch.

Ken. I think you just don't read posts. I'm on about a keeper kicking from their hands not throwing it forward a few yards. At the weekend the keeper for villa was completely out of his area with what appeared to be both feet kicking from his hands. I've tried to make it as clear as possible. I see it fairly often but the one at the weekend was very clear.

How often do you see a goalkeeper kick from their hands and be outside of their area when striking the ball. I swear the keeper was completely out of his area on at least 1 occasion and nothing is ever picked up. What is the ruling on that? Is it intentional handball? Does anyone know?
