Anything of substance in the renewed de jong rumors ed002?

Yipyapstam

{Ed002's Note - Frenkie de Jong (CM/DM) Barcelona will look for a new contract with reduced wages else he will be sold in the summer with interest remaining from Manchester United - although he will need to prove his fitness after injury - so might be one for later in the window. PSG have spoken with his agent and additionally his agent has raised his availability with Chelsea whist discussing another player and with Arsenal - but neither is interested and the wages are huge.}

Time travelled back 2 years!
That being said, if there was a way of bringing in both Ugarte (loan with obligation) and De Jong then likely be the best 2 midfielders we could get.
Having said all of that, do not see it happen. Slow day in the news.

2.) 30 Jul 2024 12:27:14
Read somewhere that he’s the highest paid player in La Liga, so unless he accepts a pay cut I can’t see anybody willing to stump up a transfer fee and his wages.

3.) 30 Jul 2024 13:47:52
At this point, De Jong may as well change his name to Wesley Sneijder.

4.) 30 Jul 2024 14:10:11
Dude is supposedly earning more than half a million a week. He’d be crazy to leave or sign a new deal. If he’s smart, he’ll see out his contract and then collect a fat signing on fee at his next club.

5.) 30 Jul 2024 16:18:52
Is there a need for De Jong now? I feel like Mainoo came in and unexpectedly settled quickly and actually does the role De Jong does. Then we have Mount who is having a good pre season so hopefully stays clear of injuries and kicks on this season. Not sure he’s what we need now in CM with our current options.

6.) 30 Jul 2024 16:41:42
I would have to agree with Ports. What we are missing is somebody to do the dirty work, win balls back and be a bit of muscle in the centre of the pitch.

7.) 30 Jul 2024 18:21:47
I think Mainoo has a higher ceiling than De Jong, although he’s a different type of CM. We are blessed to have that little wizard coming through at our club.

8.) 30 Jul 2024 18:41:09
Yeah, DeJong is a player I would have loved to see brought in even a year ago, but with Bruno, Mount and Mainoo, I feel like he'd be the kind of luxury signing we can't afford when we have so many other positions in far more urgent need of improvement.

We need a midfielder who can play as a real number 6 in a physical league. Ugarte being the example most heavily linked with us at the moment.

If we get that kind of midfielder in, I'd still be looking at another CB, RB, LB and RW before I even considered someone like De Jong.

The Only way we get Ugarte, MDL or JB, a new LB, a new RB and a new RW, and still have enough money for someone like Frankie Dr Jong, are in Football Manager or EA FC a few months from now.

Yes it's completely true, they are rumours.

Read we've had a bid accepted for a young winger pellestri, from South America. Any truth to this Ed?

Yipyapstam

{Ed002's Note - Try searching.}

If ed002 is around, do utd still hold an interest in alderweireld. And are rumours of a release clause true. Thanks in advance.

Yipyapstam

{Ed002's Note - As I have previously said, Toby Alderweireld (CB) would be no more than a short-term solution and even though Spurs want him to stay and sign a new deal as they expect they will already be losing one CB, I expect he will head elsewhere - I would strike him from the list. There is a termination clause that is only valid for a short period of time.}

1.) 03 Jul 2019 13:50:16
So another target off the list along with Manolas, Saliba and Koulibaly.

{Ed002's Note - There is nothing new - I said this some time ago.}

2.) 03 Jul 2019 13:52:17
Thanks ed. I remember you saying the above but things change quickly in football, and I think short term solutions might be better than some of the long term targets currently available.

3.) 03 Jul 2019 14:07:37
@Ed002,

Thanks for the information on Alderweireld. Are the reports of a £70mil offer for Maguire from United correct?

I know he is of interest as you have told us. Seems strange to go for him now after deeming him not a significant improvement and not value for money last year. A bit embarrassing that the board didn't back Jose for the same player but would now spend (perhaps more than what it would have cost last year) for Solskjaer.

{Ed002's Note - Yes there has been such a bid.}

4.) 03 Jul 2019 14:23:05
Nice to know that they are learning their lessons from previous poor recruitment, sigh.

5.) 03 Jul 2019 14:27:25
Thanks for the info Ed002. Hope you're having a much better than the rainy mess here for me in WI.

{Ed002's Note - It is a beautiful day here.}

6.) 03 Jul 2019 15:39:33
While I don't think Maguire is the answer, I don't think anybody can point the finger at our recruitment this summer given the clear change in direction with the signings of Daniel James and AWB, and supposed interest in Longstaff and Bruno.

I was hoping we'd sign Toby as a short-term solution and it's a shame that it won't be happening. There are still a few others to consider.

Dias would be my first choice although he's heading elsewhere.
Skriniar and KK are too expensive (I would put Maguire as too expensive too for his ability) .

From Ed002's list that leaves:
Milenkovic who I think is solid and 002 says is a very good option, which counts for something.
And Saliba who would be a risk due to age and experience.

Another concern is that of the 5 RW's mentioned, only Zaha seems realistic but wants Arsenal.

Eds what happens when we simply run out of targets? Is it a case of move forward with what we've got and see what develops over time?

{Ed001's Note - that depends on how pressing the need is, sometimes clubs will put together new lists.}

7.) 03 Jul 2019 19:12:28
Thanks Ed. I think the RW position has been pressing for years but the club obviously disagree!

{Ed001's Note - fair point.}

If you don't change with the times you get left behind, we've seen that to a certain extent with Jose. Madrid tried to match peps City like we did a couple of times against that 09-13 Barcelona squad and got played off the park. Meanwhile inter should have beaten them because they managed to hold them off by playing deep and onanas calmness on the ball helped that. Even players like haaland change things, teams had to change the way they set up because he was so powerful and direct. In 50 years time maybe the 442 will be back revolutionary and a cryogenically frozen big sam will awaken and dominate world football.

Those goalkeepers also could pick up back passes and mostly played with defenders who used their heads more than their feet. Football has evolved and players have too, Allison is probably the most important signing liverpool have made in a decade and revolutionised how they play as he can sweep, do 1 on 1 and is strong with his feet.

No worries, must have missed it. Can anyone remember any defensive targets who looked likely?

Bit harsh calling out his spelling. Why do you think he goes by Ken instead of his birth name Kenilston.

I agree with shappy, hope he kicks on but I just don't see what the fuss is about. Nothing stands out to me but must be something the big wigs are seeing (other than his big wig) that I'm missing.

Have to agree with GDS, I thought Gomes looked really good. Very sharp and clever on the ball, think he should get some minutes when we're trying to break down teams who have parked the bus.
