There is one thing that annoys me over this potential Darmian signing, and I say potential not because I don't think it will go through as I do but because it hasn't been confirmed yet.

There is this belief from many posters that he wasn't the clubs first choice, many even stating that its "obvious" that he wasn't.

What are you guys basing that on? We have had no confirmed bids for any RB at present, and apparently we have already had two bids for Darmian rejected. So from what I can see is we have made consistent bids for Darmain and none for any other RB, from that I can only conclude that Darmian was our main target.

Sure the press have linked us to Alves, Coleman and Clyne. But we haven't bid for any of them. The press would also have you believe we were on the verge of signing Firmino, and yet we never made a move for him.

What it comes down to is believing in certain speculation that suits your view point yet disregarding everything that doesn't match your view point as "just speculation". It's down right craziness, even deluded.

No one can say whether Darmian is first second or hundredth choice until the club comes out and states otherwise, and even then the club would never say any player they signed was anything other than first choice.

It's cruel to dismiss a talented hard working professional based on speculations that has not a shred of evidence to back any of it up.

I've watched Darmian on about 10 occasions, I've also spoken with a couple of people who have watched him for several years, one has even met him on a couple of occasions. And they both say good things about him.

He is strong, quick, good in the air, a good reader of the game with strong defensive instincts and an engine that allows him to run all day long. As long as he settles in England he will go on to be one of our best signings in recent times.

There are many on this site who give opinions based primarily on speculation. We don't have a clue what's going on behind the scenes, most of the time, yet that doesn't stop people from feeling aggrieved about a perceived lack of activity or even the order of transfers!

Tbf it works both ways, there are those who think Darmian is an excellent signing based on seeing 1 game v England (where they prob didn't even pay him much attention), some YouTube clips and just because he's been recently linked.

I guess it's all fun though 😜

Fully agree mate

I read that we've been in contact with torino for 4 months so maybe just maybe he's been our 1st choice all along

To be fair Jred I don't think he has a huge amount of competition. Who have we signed in the last three years who has blown you away?

In the last 5 years you have De Gea, Kagawa, RvP, Buttner, Zaha, Fellaini, Mata, Herrera, Shaw, Rojo, Blind, Di Maria, Falcao, Valdes and Depay so far.

De Gea was a top signing but took a few years to get to grips with it, van Persie had one good season. I have high hopes for Shaw, Herrera and Di Maria. But none of them have surpassed our expectations with the exception of De Gea. There is still time with most of them so it would be harsh to say they haven't lived up to expectations yet as several have only been here one season.

So yes I do believe Darmian has the potential to become one of our best signings of recent times. If he is first choice RB for the next 6 years he'll probably surpass what most of the players I've mentioned will do.

. but on a positive note, jred, Evra and Stam were not highly thought of when we signed them and both turned into blinders. To be honest, even buying recognised 'stars' doesn't mean they'll be successful with us, Veron, Falcao, and so far, ADM.
Lets just give the lad a chance and help him all we can.

stam was a top player when we bought him which is why we payed a world record fee for a defender.
evra had just had a great season with monaco getting to the CL final.

truth is people don't seem to off seen much of darmian , but want to try and judge him as not good enough or one of the best signings we have made in recent times.

honeybadger hit the nail on the head

OT7,

Stam was very well known when we signed him. Most top clubs wanted him if I recall
