I wrote a reply yesterday explaining my position on time wasting in the villa game but for whatever reason it didn't get posted so thought I would try again.

If my post about it yesterday came across as an excuse for the result against villa then it definitely wasn't meant to at all, if you score early enough then you stop any chance of time wasting from the opposition anyway. Newcastle time wasted from the 5th minute of the game (Darlow was asked to speed up a goal kick that early which is madness) yet because we scored before half time it kind of got forgotten about but it happens a lot against the teams coming to OT to snatch a point or frustrate us and get a win.

My point is that time wasting shouldn't even be allowed to be a tactic but whilst it is teams will continue to use it to frustrate. The ball was in play for 45 minutes against villa out of 90, that's crazy, especially as Mike Dean knew this was happening as he told the keeper to speed up about 5 times with no caution.

I agree with Ken and have for a long time, rugby have it right, take the time off the refs, have a clock that everyone can see is stopped and let players take as long as they want for a goal kick or for rolling around on the floor because it's not affecting the time of the game. It will eradicate time wasting immediately and make the game better to watch in my opinion.

It certainly wasn't an 'excuse' about the villa game, although it did stop our momentum we should have been good enough to score one of our many chances, imagine how many shots we would have missed if the ball had actually been in play for some of the game!

Anyway, onwards and upwards, hopefully Villarreal come to play tonight rather than waste time, CL refs obviously clamping down on it more as Varane got booked in the Young Boys game the second he started to time waste. That's the only way to stop it if we don't have a total re-think on the time keeping.

It drives me mad GDS, there’s lots of gamesmanship like stealing 10 yards at a throw in, appealing for throws and corners when you know you touched it last, players throwing themselves to the floor clutching their face, rolling around like they’ve been shot and then running around like a racehorse 5 minutes later.

But time wasting is insidious and referees let players get away from it. The ball ends up with the keeper who waits for an opponent to approach, at which point he falls onto the ball and lies there for 20 seconds. Taking forever at goal kicks, changing your mind who is going to take a throw on or free kick. Substitutions where the player walks off from the furthest point on the pitch. Players staying down just to waste time, substitutions in added time for no reason other than to run down the clock.

They tried a 6 second rule with GKs but it didn’t last long, I thought it was a great idea, not sure how we fix it but something needs to give.

GDS2 the average game of football the ball is only in play for 59 minutes in a 90 minute game so to be honest its not that much lower than the average game of football, it is coming across as an excuse but I do totally agree with time wasting is frustrating but it has been part of the game since the very beginning and at all levels, I have done it my self before I hung the boots up and became fat and old.

GDS2. You watch if we are actually winning 1-0 with 5 mins to go we will do exactly the same, it ain’t going to change even a stopping clock as in Rugby or basketball etc all it will do is mean you miss the last bus home…. won’t make it anymore exciting I’m afraid

The team if good enough should be able to get the goals so this is not even a concern, look at Liverpool attack from 1st min to95min even though it pains me to say that, they are miles in front of us.

I think 14 mins less is a lot dio- that’s a quarter of the time the ball was in play. Extrapolated that’s 22 mins.

Jackanus,

You’ve missed my point once again, this isn’t a dig at opposition teams or saying united don’t do it, of course we do it, I literally said in my post we did it against Young Boys, why wouldn’t we when everyone does it against us? If you stopped the clock when teams are wasting time it would literally be pointless wasting time so I wouldn’t ‘miss the last bus home’ as time wasting would stop all together. I’d get to see a proper game of football, just think it’s an easy fix to a massive issue but the issue is ignored or not noticed by many.

How anyone can say 15 minutes less time than the average in play time isn’t a lot is beyond me, surely you can see that means they wasted 15 minutes of time in the game, how can that be right? I get that it’s a large part of the game dio but it’s mad that people accept that as just being how it is because it’s always happened. They change all sorts of pointless rules every year yet this is never looked at.

Why wouldn't villa if others do it against them.
You can't try and justify united players doing it nobody should be doing it.

How often do you see a goalkeeper kick from their hands and be outside of their area when striking the ball. I swear the keeper was completely out of his area on at least 1 occasion and nothing is ever picked up. What is the ruling on that? Is it intentional handball? Does anyone know?

I not missed the point at all, maybe it gets overlooked and done for years because more important things in the game that’s wrong then someone taking longer to get ball in play

Some teams do it for tactical reasons some do if for a breather but I’m really not sure it would make much difference to the game if stopping clock system was used, in fact whilst watching united lately it would just prolong the agony for another 30-45 mins.

I also hate it when we do it, it smacks of desperation. Its become a thing and it would be good to have it addressed but I don't see it happening.

Same here Tony unfortunately, nothing will change, we have to find a way to score early and stop teams being able to do it, just a frustration of mine and many others.

Oh Ken, I know you agree with me yet you find it so hard to just say that, I wasn’t really justifying united doing it nor having a go at villa for it, I think the rules need to change so that it can’t happen, the refs should clamp down as soon as it starts as nothing will change with the ref and time keeping. Mike Dean told the keeper to hurry up at least 6 times on saturday, surely that means he is aware what he’s doing yet did nothing about it.

I don’t think you can really blame any team for doing it when the rules are there to make it worthwhile and all teams know the full amount wasted won’t be added on. Don’t get me started on it being exactly 4 minutes added when a ref has supposedly been stopping his watch.

I hate it when we do it, like I hate it when our players dive or Bruno pretends he’s broken his leg at least once a game, but while there is so much riding on games and players can get away with it it’s difficult to blame players, as frustrating as it is.

Supasub no keeper handles the ball outside the area. They release the ball before they are over the line often kicking it a yard or 2 outside the area. No offence there so not sure what your complaining about.

So if its difficult to blame players you can't certitude the villa players then surely?
It is the refs that need to take action don't moan at the villa players. It's so the same. I agree Bruno is pathetic the way he rolls around. Footballers cheat and will cheat at every given opportunity. United players cheat.
How often have you been in your seat at old Trafford and shouted at ddg to hurry up with his goal kick when we are 1 up? Or had a go at a united player for cheating / diving etc?

Ken. I think you just don't read posts. I'm on about a keeper kicking from their hands not throwing it forward a few yards. At the weekend the keeper for villa was completely out of his area with what appeared to be both feet kicking from his hands. I've tried to make it as clear as possible. I see it fairly often but the one at the weekend was very clear.
