What are people's thoughts on an American style pro-bowl game between the North and the South?

For the record, I hate it. It's a meaningless piece of twaddle designed for one reason only, to make money from the hoopla. For some reason these Americans seem to think we will all enjoy our football so much more if we just turn our sports into US style vapid media frenzies under the rule of franchise systems with no relegation or promotion and where profits are locked in.

Before we know it we'll be interrupting the action for "TV time outs", those game stretching artificial advertising breaks. Is it any wonder that an American Football game takes 3 1/2 hours with just 12+/- minutes of actual action.

Not a fan but something like this will happen eventually, its just the way things are going.

Remember A few years back the proposed 39th EPL game?

From a curious observer standpoint I think it would be an interesting watch, like the way the frequent England v Scotland 'friendlies' used to be. From a managerial / club perspective, players need permission to tie their laces in their spare time and managers dread seeing players get injured on international duty, so I can't see them being thrilled at the prospect of seeing them break their legs in a pointless cashcow like this.

More fixtures are what is needed in English football.

Are u tired of playing all these games like? As a football fan who wouldn't want to watch the best players of the northen Premier league teams play the South! I'd much rather watch this than England play Albania in a meaningless friendly don't understand why people are so against it raise some money for grass roots football perhaps. ure all acting like uve played a full season and not sat on setee or pub or in the ground watching it!

The greed in football will be its own downfall.

Everyone is scrambling to play more games, the FA want more games in England, UEFA want more games, FIFA want more games, clubs want to play more pre-season friendlies in far flung corners of the world to increase revenue in new emerging markets.

The problem is though the more something is available the less interested people are in seeing it.

Fans will become overwhelmed with how much football there is to see and as such will watch less of it.

Not to mention to rising cost to clubs and associations to play so much football. Clubs will actually need 25 players of the same standard to rotate without drop off in performances to play as many games. With rising costs in transfer fees and wages will be expensive.

Imagine 25 players on 200-300k per week, each costing at least 50m.

That squad would cost at least 1.25bn to build and would cost an average of 6.25m a week in wages or 325m a year.

That's at current rates, in 10 years time it could well be double that.

If they can make it a good spectacle and affordable for families I'm okay with it.

But knowing these greedy f*ers, it will be a saturated expensive event.

Can't think of a worse idea to be honest I'm not sure there is not to be said on it.
What purpose does it serve for the players and fans?

Stupid idea. No more to say on subject.

Bigman, the majority of international football, particularly the friendlies, is of no interest to me. I far prefer club football. So if one has to rank Eng v Alb against an all star game, I'd agree. But having an all star game where the top players play half-heartedly while the media, the players, the TV pundits and the FA rake in more money from the fans is mere hoopla. If there is a charitable aspect to the venture it will be the fans who are indirectly funding it and no one else. It's not unlike stores that collect money for charity from you and then claim the credit.

Agreed shaw.

Most of the international friendlies are pointless.

Why not make a nice charity event, a one time big spectacle, nothing wrong with it.

I like how Ken had nothing more to say on the matter, until 90 mins later when he did ?

Football calendar is getting too crowded, football saturation, can honestly see the players' unions doing something about it at some point. Completely unsustainable to play none stop for full career.

Also leaves a bad taste americanising "soccer", and I enjoy some north american sports (live in canada now) but we don't need to do this to EPL. The all star games are a joke btw, because there is nothing riding on the games. Pointless.
