Re: New Captain

I don't think that there is really a case for Wayne Rooney being made club captain.

I think there are a few reasons for this.

Firstly, from the captains LVG has used so far have all been mid fielders or defenders.

Secondly, this fits with the generally held opinion that in order for a captain to function well, they should lead from the back or in the middle - it is hard to shout and motivate people if you are up-front or on the wing.

Next, although LVG gave the arm-band to RVP at the WC (breaking the above assumption I made), I don't think he would play favourites and give it to him. although there is a chance. Someone mentioned here previously that they don't think RVP would be given the arm-band as he hasn't been at the club for long enough. I don't think that matters.

Finally, To get the best out of Rooney again, I think he needs less responsibility, less lime-light. Obviously, club-wise, he has brought some of that upon himself in recent seasons, but I think it would be better if Rooney wasn't subjected to leadership and instead be given the challenge of stepping up again to the challenge now he has been given the more favoured role as part of a strike partnership with RVP. (Target 20 goals minimum).

So, that leads to the question, who will take the arm band?

My feeling is Fletcher. I'm surprised Evans hasn't been given it yet during the tour (He'd be my next guess and probably the dark-horse), RVP would be another option but not an easy choice (which makes me think it will be him as LVG loves to make the hard choices and wouldn't shy away from the criticism of playing favourites with someone he already trusts to run his system and methodology.

P.S. I reckon we will get Vidal and if not Hummels then two defenders - one versatile (Blind) and one sturdy (Vermaelen).

No Cavani, No Di Maria, No Cuadrado.

Surprised there have been no shouts for Jan Vertonghen.

1.) Vertonghen would probably be a good signing, he could play the left centre back in he 3-5-2, and cover centre back and left back in the 4-3-3, much like Vermaelen. However I think he has said he is staying.

2.) I've been wondering about Vertoghen too. Left sides centre back who can play at left back in a 4. Wouldn't fancy trying to deal with Levy (and get charged well over the odds for him) though so would probably look elsewhere.
