First time posting, I do think we have a excellent team as it is barring smalling and jones, I do have to admit they would really struggle getting into a top 6 side never mind into a Manchester United team but they do and that has worried me for years, I thought when Jose came they would be first to go but the comedy of them must keep them at the club.

My main point is we have been spending millions season after season since sir Alex retired it hasn't worked for one main reason manager after manger we have had not one of them has brought a good team spirit it doesn't matter how much you spend if all the players are doing is just picking a wage up not one manager has brought regular good form the football is awefull, Leicester won the league off good team morale and spirit it plays a massive part.
I have never been a Jose fan as Bobby Charlton said he brings a circus everywhere he goes that was one of the reasons he didn't come in the first place, we ran out of choices and he was the only choice, he is miserable he makes the fans miserable and most of all the players just look and seem so unhappy.

Just imagine klopp with are squad he would get them lads pumping there morale would be sky high week in week out attacking football.

Smalling did get in to a top 6 team in fact last season he was first choice cb for a team that finished second .
To be honest I thought he looked far better than bailly who people seem to rave about, even tho he looks very rash and lindelof, who really struggled .
Hard league the epl not many players better than smalling a lot of experts will say he was awful but 46 appearances tells u what Jose thinks .

So u say keep saying but the lad is clearly first choice even if can't wait to get shot . only a year on his contract so the club and player may need to make a decision but he is clearly first choice for Jose.
We will see what happens but I will be surprised if he leaves.

Smalling is an interesting one. When it comes to the fundamentals of defending he is clearly one of our best defenders. Clears well with his head, strong in the tackle, holds his ground well and quick to make covering runs.

He does have a few couple of flaws in his defending. He has a tendency to find himself in the wrong position too often, luckily for him his pace often gets him out of that dilemma. The other issue he has is he holds on to players far too much during set plays. He has got away with it more often than not, but had he been first choice for England at the world cup he would have certainly given away a penalty with VAR. When VAR comes to the EPL Smalling will have a serious problem. Both of these issues probably stem from his non-league upbringing, and could therefore be hard to eradicate from his game as it has become habitual now.

Beyond his defending the thing he gets stick for most is his lack of quality on the ball, especially when under pressure. He never tried the defence splitting pass and always chooses the easiest pass available, which is predictable. When pressured he often panics and give the ball away. Which against a high pressing team makes him a liability.

He was often chosen by Jose last season, especially towards the end of the campaign. Bailly and Jones were clear first choice at the beginning. Yet Jones succumbed to injury yet again (surprise surprise) and Bailly seemed to be out of favour by the end of the season. Even though in my opinion he was our best defender last season. Jose has also made Rojo first choice for a spell. So I think it's fair to say he has made 4 of our 5 current first team centre backs first choice for a spell. (Lindelof had a good run towards the end of the season, but how much of that was due to injury is yet to be determined) . That to me suggests Jose isn't happy with any of his combinations at present and that is further made clear by his insistence on signing yet another centre back this summer. Who comes in if any, and how they work with our current options will likely decide who is first choice this season.

I suspect if a good enough off came in for any of our centre backs it would be accepted. We have a large squad and need to sell before we can buy to keep in line with FFP.

Smalling is better than Jones but who’s going to pay for him. I’d flog Jones - never going to make it unfortunately and never got enough. Oh and Rojo can go too.
