Another one gone, Bailly signs for Besiktas on a permanent deal.

Good news but would have preferred him coming on before Maguire and Evans on Sundday.

Evans bashing season has started early I see. Bailly is awful. A defender who cannot actually defend or tackle.
I’m truly shocked Maguure stayed though on that topic. The guy must be super pig headed or just not very smart.

Bailly is a mad man I would rather Maguire.

Agreed would rather Maguire or Evans over Bailly. He really is that bad.

Maguire stayed for the money. No one else was going to pay him anywhere near £10m a year. He knows his career is on the downswing, why would he get off the gravy train?

Christ, People actually think it was a good move getting Jonny evans back. We got rid of him 8 or 9 years ago because he wasn’t good enough. Just got relegated, pushing the wrong end of his 30’s and we give him a contract. It’s absolutely pathetic. It just highlights the shambles this club has become. A complete circus. Maybe Liverpool will give carragher a contract too. It’s a complete joke, and it’s no coincidence we conceded two within ten mins of then two clowns at Cb.

Stand. It’s not great. But getting rid of him at the time was a mistake.
We’ve spent fortunes on centre backs since, who are not as good as Evans at his peak.
Rojo, Bailly and Maguire certainly fall into that bracket. Lindelof is about on par.
No good saying he wasn’t good enough, when what we replace him with was worse.
Yet another example of bad recruitment over the past 10 years, and it’s surely ironic that the player deemed “not good enough” 9 years ago is the one who outlasted most if not all of the above. Surely that’s a massive face palm for our transfer committee, but they obviously don’t see it that way.

I find myself regularly agreeing with Stand, we are in danger of becoming a laughing stock.
We know we have issues behind the scenes but signing Evans was bizarre even by our standards. This also links to the lack of players coming through the Academy, are we really saying we don't have a prospect better than Evans? Mind boggling.

Wazza, i agree, I thought he was ok when he left. But that’s not the point. The fact he’s been given a one year deal at his age now, it’s utterly ridiculous. It’s like dads army at the back with him and slab head. Recruitment at United over the last 10 years must go down as the worst of any big club of all time. Case in point sancho, he’s not good enough and never was. We go give him 375k a bloody week, unreal. No wonder we can never offload the crap at our club, no one else will want to give him half of that.

I agree with you stand. I’m not defending Evans, I’m saying he’s better than more than half of the centre backs we’ve bought since he left. That’s not his fault. It’s the blind vision of those in charge of transfers.

Eric79, it’s not Evans bashing. I think everyone of us agree that he’s a good honest pro and likely a nice fella too. It’s not personal to him but it’s ridiculous that we’re in this position. As AJH touched on, we’ve let Tuanzebe and Mengi go recently, and now find ourselves with Jonny Evans at centre half. Meanwhile, over the road, City are adding Gvardiol to their treble winning squad. Liverpool have revamp their midfield in one window after having an off season. Arsenal have added Rice to an already strong midfield and Tottenham have lost their talisman, all time leading goal scorer and are producing good football with a new manager from the off!
How can United fans honestly be happy with our squad and the dross we’re producing away from home.

It is madness that we ended a premier league game with them 2 at the back but it’s also madness that the reason was because our first choice 4 centre backs were all ill or injured at the same time. Most teams would be screwed if that happened, when it happened to Liverpool they played Nat Philips and Rhys Williams for a while and were shocking. So as much as it’s a joke they had to play, you’d like to hope that it isn’t something that will happen regularly.
{Ed001's Note - actually when Phillips and Williams were the pairing Liverpool went on an unbeaten run to get a top 4 place. It was when midfielders were used in defence before that and the useless loanee lump Kabak played that Liverpool struggled.}

It’s the clear the club is run appallingly, but that’s not the fault of Evans.
Millions squandered, and never in the right places. The whole club is a cesspit right now.

I thought Liverpool struggled when the moved Fabinho into the back 4 rather than using him at DM as the shield.

Ah ok, I remember them going for the title the year before and then struggling the year after when their defence was injured, only getting 4th at the end when a few players were back and Allison getting that winner.
Maze, give it a rest you tit.
{Ed001's Note - the defence was still out, it was just Klopp finally took the plunge and gave Phillips and Williams a run and put the midfield back together. Having everyone in their natural position made a huge difference.}

Hi Giggs. Liverpool fan here and what Ed001 said was correct. We had three first-choice CBs (Matip, Gomez, and Van Dijk) that season and all three were out injured for the duration of the season. We then played our midfielders (Fabinho, Hendo, and Gini) in CB for a while and that was when we struggled. When Hendo and Fabinho got injured, we went out and got Davies and Kabak in the Jan window. Davies and Kabak then got injured so we were forced to play Phillips and Williams in CB. That, coupled with the return from injury of both Hendo and Fabinho, led to us going on an unbeaten run and ultimately finishing third that season.
You were partially right though when you said that we got a few players back but it was our midfield players, not our CBs that returned from injury. And that winner from Allison helped a lot as well.

Take the money. Donate one week's wages to Earps to persuade her to stay. Sancho has no future at this club.
