I am disgusting what I have read on socials after the game, racial abuse just because 3 lads missed penalties. 3 young lads abused by bigots who will never have the talent or the courage to even be in a position that Rash, Sancho and Saka are to play for their country and take a penalty in a final, hope each one is found and dealt with severely but I fear racism is running uncontrollably in the game once again.

Disgusting isn’t it and seems to be very predictable now after every game. As a Irish man I’ll admit I wanted Italy to win last night but I was gutted for the lads who missed the pens. My first thought afterwards was ‘they will get it on social media’ the situations getting worse and something needs to be done as who knows how some of these vile comments will affect young teenagers/ men’s mental state. As united fans it’s our job to rally round our players as I’m sure arsenal fans will saka, but as a football community as a whole I think it’s time we collectively put pressure on social media firms. The clubs have had blackouts etc maybe they need to do more, hit those companies financially and maybe they will do something ethically.

Unfortunately these tournaments can bring out the best and the worst in people.

On one hand the whole country was brought together, riding a wave of emotion and hope. Something that has been missing for at least 18 months or so in our society.

On the other some people are unable to appreciate football for what it truly is. A joyful distraction from the rat race of everyday life. Take that context away and people start to put too much importance on the outcome of a sporting event.

If you can't watch a game of football and be okay enough to be a decent human being even if your team loses then you don't have the capacity to watch or enjoy sport.

If you feel so angry at a loss that you feel the need to abuse people, verbal or physically (let's not pretend that there wasn't a spike in domestic violence last night) . Then you don't have the mental capacity to watch sports.

Unfortunately social media is a very small microcosm of society and only one person needs to say something racist for it to be the biggest thing. I was out last night and didn’t hear one racist comment, I’d imagine most people didn’t even notice it was only black players that missed penalties. Unfortunately faceless scumbags on social media is what is actually seen. I’ve just seen someone say ‘what do you expect from the English, that’s just what they are like’, totally missing the point that that’s just as racist.

The racist comments against those three young lads are disgusting.

Also disappointing are many of the comments I have read overall about those three in general even when not overtly racist.

I think you mean prejudice rather than racism GDS. But definitions aside there has long been an undercurrent of racism in football, there still is, just cause you don't see it doesn't mean its not there, and its not just English football.

The weird thing is we sit here and complain about racism and abuse directed at players, but we will quite happily sit in the stands week in week out verbally abusing opposing football teams and players through our songs and chants and think that is acceptable.

I’ve raised this before Grim. Some of the chants are appalling yet thousands happily sing them. It’s not funny or clever, some of them are unacceptable.

It's easy to forget, in our day to lives interacting with decent people who we frequently either choose to be in our lives or are there by default but obliged to follow certain minimum standards of decency and civility, that a huge number of people on this planet are complete and utter xxxxs that the world would be considerably better off without.

I find it incredibly frustrating.

For the majority of my life I've always felt that it was the duty of those with compassion and intelligence to try to help those without, but the last 5 years which has seen amongst other things trump and brexit and along with it an increase in the confidence of a bunch of inbred ignorant selfish xxxxs has made me start leaning towards the idea that on the whole we get exactly what we deserve, that the majority aren't worth saving or fighting for, and I'm better off focusing on myself and those around me that matter and to hell with everyone else.

Football typically just reinforces this view point, with things like rashford trying to feed kids the rare anomaly and the xxxxs saying he should focus on football jolt back to reality.
