12 months ago I was a very unhappy utd fan. We had a manager I didn't rate and got slapped in the face by every player we looked at. I can't help but feel that maybe with Hererra and Shaw already signed that the problem may not have been Woodward but the players we were interested in also didn't rate Moyes. Roll on to now and we have a new manager who will only have seen his stock rise with a respectable world cup placing and some either genius or lucky decisions which either way show he has balls big enough to fill old Trafford. Add to this the bumper new deal with adidas and it looking more likely on a daily basis that Vidal could be joining us which would for me and I'm sure many others would be the "marquee" signing we were all pining for last summer
Not to mention the other players we need to fill the gap in defence and attack I for one can not wait for the new season to begin. Even if we don't win the league next season I will still be happy as the intent and ambition in getting us back to the top again looks to be happening.

1.) 14 Jul 2014 15:53:07
You could well be right BeachBum - personally I hoped Moyes would work out (as I would with any incumbent in the Utd managers chair) and felt he maybe could have, however the history books will say not and that's all that matters. We do seem to be on a hugely promising upward curve this summer and that without doubt is, in part, due to LVG's arrival.

Remember though all things are relative - we really did only have one way to go after last summer + season and that was up. As long as we don't get carried away with the inevitable downs that will occur along the way I feel we could tear up a few trees this year (new signings permitting). Fingers crossed.

2.) I admire LVG just as much as the next guy but not so sure I'm comfortable with the thought of his balls invading Old Trafford.

3.) I've said it many times, depending who the manager is it will determine who plays for you.
You can go for a manager who has managed at the highest level and won many things, while also developing youth and players of all ages.
Or can can for a manager who's never won, no big team ever wanted him, no development skills, no winning mentality or tactics like the person we had

Now I know were all excited by links and possible deals for Vidal and Reus etc. i'm still hoping a deal could be done for Daley Blind. Now I know people will.say he's not the quickest and fair point but neither was sherringham or bergkamp and whist granted they were forwards and not left backs they both had fantastic football sense and were fantastic players. Also with evras imminent departure to juve he would give us experienced cover at lb for which he one ajax player of the year and also in midfield which last season he won dutch footballer of the year. He is obviously very adaptable and versatile with a good footballing brain on him.

1.) The problem with Blind is he won't want to come to United as a utility player. He wants to play in his favourite position in cm and, frankly, he isn't good enough to be a first choice cm for us.

04 Jul 2014 11:13:54
Okay more of an opinions post here folks! Out of the 3 forwards were continually linked with. Di Maria, Sanchez and Memphis who do you think is most likely? Also with juves interest in Evra. Could this put us back in for blind? He could play mf and cover shaw at lb possibly saving some money this summer as I don't see vidal coming. And lastly if chelsea came back in for rooney would anyone else be happy with lukaka in a px. Pie in the sky really but i'd go for it.

1.) I would sell Rooney in a heartbeat. From a footballing perspective he has not been the same player since he had his first contract renewal under SAF. We are paying the same wages as the likes of Zlatan, Cristiano and Messi and yet is nowhere near their level. However I can only think that commercially he is worth an awful lot to the club. So until we get a player with that "Star" quality I think Rooney will stay.

Out of the three, I think Sanchez will go to Arsenal and it looks as though we are in for Di Maria if reports are to be believed. I would welcome this and think it would work under Van Gaal because Di Maria works so hard for 90 mins. Yes he might be a bit inconsistent, but then LVG played Dirk Kuyt for Netherlands because he is a workhorse.
Id take both Blind and Depay as back up for Shaw/Di Maria and then Memphis for Nani or Valencia.

2.) 04 Jul 2014 12:28:18
Zatlan is very overrated imo. Certainly not up their with the best in the world and the only thing bigger than his ego is his nose. P.s I don't think Blind would do so well at left back in the PL, far too slow.

3.) Oh no, someone has mentioned the R word in a less than complimentary way, I can see a debate starting yet again.

4.) Ste. Zlatan's goals scoring record is as good as most - he is a top player, just a bit of an arse.

5.) 04 Jul 2014 13:21:26

Memphis & Depay are the same player.

His name is Memphis Depay

6.) Harry, That one I know.

I just used both names.

I was being clever! But obviously to clever! :)

7.) Depay needs to show a lot more before being compared to Sanchez, Di Maria, or Cuadrado (my addition :). Sanchez, we've been hearing about Arsenal, Juventus, and Liverpool. Di Maria, PSG and Monaco.
Blind seems a decent player, and versatile, two nice assists v Spain, but I'm not sure he is quick enough.

8.) Would lover the scousers to buy Rooney he is just what they need.

9.) I agree with fresh.zlatan is very arrogant and outspoken and that can rub a lot of people up the wrong way but you can't deny when needed he usually delivers the goals in big games. Players who consistently do that are world class in my opinion (messi at this world cup a perfect example).

20 Jun 2014 11:17:51
Having been able to watch quite a lot of the world cup I have to say manager aside, the players I like the look of the most are also dutch. I think blind, Martins indi and depay all look like they would fit in well and definitely improve us in their respective positions. The one position I can't decide on who I like is where we are so desperate in cm. I can't for one second imagine that the likes of kroos and vidal would be coming especially with no cl. Manchester United the name doesn't have the same pull for players that it once did with most now preferring a spanish move or holding out for mega wages at one of the fantasy football clubs. Eds and posters alike who do you think likely and realistic targets will or should be? The only other cm player I've liked the look of is mateo kovacic but I doubt inter would want to sell or he would even want to come. I didn't rate song the other night either and for me he can stay at Barcelona. I'd love sanchez and busquets but their just never going to happen either.

1.) Herrera for mexico has been the pick of the bunch for me

2.) 20 Jun 2014 12:13:18
Busquets? Oh god no.

3.) The Dutch forwards and defence have been very impressive. Depay, Indi, de Vrij, Blind, Robben and RVP have all been excellent. Also have been very impressed with de Guzman who I have paid little attention to until now. The CM position is a very tricky one though, no one has been standout and achievable for us. I'm still hoping that we make a double swoop for Vidal and Sanchez (dream land). Perhaps a move for Schweinsteiger.

4.) I think that we should put a bid in for the Dutch squad and start playing in clogs.

5.) 20 Jun 2014 13:03:31
Think the fact you think de Guzman looks good says it all fresh. Danny, your sarcasm is going off the scale at the moment! Love it.

6.) The dutch shirts where really bright as well, not sure what washing powder there using but we should get it for next season

7.) Danny, I recon we should sack Ed Woodward and replace him with Greg DYKE.
See what I did there? lol.

I'll get me coat. Again.

8.) 20 Jun 2014 15:22:08
If your going be careful and tiptoe through the tulips.

9.) So am I not allowed to be impressed with a player? De Guzman has been very solid in the Holland midfield - not saying we should go for him at all so don't put words in my mouth.

10.) Danny I once went to, I'll call it an entertainment bar in Amsterdam, there was a couple of ladies 'performing' on stage, both wearing clogs, if The Man Utd players come out in clogs I fear the memories may cause arousal. It just wouldn't be right.

11.) You mean people aren't usually aroused watching football?

12.) 20 Jun 2014 18:13:45
Fresh, I never said that you said we should go for him, so only one person putting words in someone's mouth.

My point was that some players look great at the World Cup that clearly have just upped their game for the tournament and are not actually at that top level.

13.) Carlton

I may have misread your post but you find clogs arousing? Fair play mate each to his own

14.) Haha

It was more what the ladies in clogs were doing than the actual clogs, I'll see if there are any vids on YouTube with clogs to check it definitely was the ladies and I don't have a wooden footwear fetish.

10 Jun 2014 10:40:06
A couple of bits here. Firstly would anyone else be happy to see rooney sold on to make better use of that ridiculous salary. Let's face it he is no messi or Ronaldo iis he? Also if we could have a summer shopping list of Hummels/indi, Shaw/alba, strootman (yes jm aware he is injured but didn't we buy ruud when he was injured and that turned out pretty good in the end didn't it?) Then either classie/song and sanchez. I for one would consider that possibly the best summers business we have possibly ever had and would definitely expect a top 4 next season. Thoughts eds/peeps?

1.) Rooney gets a raw deal on here, imo. He has been a great servant to the club, averages over 10 goals a season when played in deeper/wider areas & over 25 when played as a striker. He has countless assists and has been a major part of our success in the past ten years. The main reason being that he "held the club to ransom" twice. Some people just can't let go of the past.

{Ed004's Note - That and he has wasted most of his potential by failing to remain fit. He's continuously over weight at some stage during the year. Usually after he signs a new contract. Also many feel he restricts our style of play due to his lack of pace which you could argue against Mata however Mata is far far superior technically and his movement is 10x better for a player playing in the number 10.}

2.) You are deluded my friend

{Ed004's Note - If selling Rooney, Nani and Young enabled us to sign two wingers. I'd happily let them go. Imagine how much better are team would be with Mata or Kagawa in the number 10 and two world class wingers supporting them with Januzaj getting plenty of game time. Ideally Di Maria or Griezmann and Sanchez}

3.) I'm with ed004, if those 3 were sold and we could get 2 of Sanchez, DiMaria, Reus, Muller, Griezman, Pedro then I'd sell all 3 in a heart beat.

{Ed004's Note - I reckon by selling those 3 and it looks likely Hernandez will leave as well you would cover the majority of the costs of two new signings. Would mean the rest of our budget goes towards cb lb and 2 midfielders. I'd also sell Anderson and Fellaini}

4.) Definitely ed, give LVG a call :-).

I'd let Buttner go too if a LB definitely comes in as Evra will cover us for the year. I also wouldn't be bothered if Welbeck left tbh.

{Ed004's Note - I wouldn't be too upset seeing Lindengaard, Buttner, Fellaini/Cleverley, Anderson, Nani, Young, Zaha (maybe loan tho Ed002 I think said he might leave I think), Rooney and unfortunately Hernandez leave. As long as cb, lb, 2 cm's a winger. Promote Varela, Keane, Powell, Lingard/Lawrence and Wilson}

5.) 10 Jun 2014 13:34:14
Utd are always innovators in terms of the commercial side of the business. I think we should be the first football club to introduce a BOGOF offer, i.e. Buy Fellani and get Anderson free, or buy Nani and get Young free or buy Welbeck and get Cleverly free.

Come on Woody you know it makes sense.

6.) Wayne Rooney is a legend for what he has done at this club, his contribution on the pitch for the most part has been fantastic. Regardless of what has happened, he is still here and he is the one who rolled his sleeves up and dug deep last season. He isn't perfect, but who is? Why is it that Rooney is vilified but a bad word can't be said about Robin van Persie for instance, despite him only being here for two years, the second of which he clearly wasn't interested at times and pretty much pretended to be injured when the going got tough? Selective memory, it stinks of double standards. A lot of it is just down to bitterness about something that happened 4 years ago. He is a Manchester United player who has made more of a difference to our success and subsequent happiness than most, why not support him rather than let bitterness cloud judgement?

7.) He doesn't have the hunger anymore, he is in decline which is weird a player his age should be coming to his prime but I think he peaked to early let the money go to his head, now he is not a very good striker, or #10 and I don't think deeper role will be good either sell him

8.) Because, here we go again. He has played the club and fans for fools on 2 occasions just to get the contract he and his agent want. He plays his arse off before he gets it and then as soon as it is signed the old Rooney re - appears. He isn't professional enough to keep himself in the required shape which has affected his performance and means that he is now very much on the decline.

Because we have been so poor out wide and in CM over the past few seasons, he has looked more effective than he actually is and has been allowed to demand everything goes through him. If we address these areas then his figures will be nowhere near the same. His short passing, control, vision and skill are far below players we should have in our side. If we play a 4231 with, for example, DiMaria/Januzaj, Mata/Kagawa, Muller/Januzaj behind RVP then there is no place for Rooney. Why weaken an area of the side just to fit Rooney in? that said, I'd be happy, as I have said many times, for him to stay and rotate with RVP up top. That is his position but he isn't as good as RVP in it.

If RVP did play on injuries last season then that is an absolute disgrace and no one should say otherwise.

9.) Brendan, we have actually done this so many times that I really don't want to get into this anymore. We will agree to disagree and peacefully co-exist ;) . A couple of points though, strictly from a footballing standpoint. What is it that Kagawa has done over 2 seasons at United that he deserves a place over Wayne Rooney. Or is he one of those players for whom the excuses are bandied out left right centre. Anything but his fault is it? He has done nothing of note yet gets overhyped, more so than Wayne. Look at his games at the end of the season, he could not pass, his touch was all over the place, things that people say Kagawa excels in. If Kagawa was say competing with Januzaj, people would willingly call his bluff. Because he competes with Wayne Rooney, he should be an automatic starter without deserving it. There in lies the problem.

By the way, happy to see, you don't put Van Persie on a pedestal like others ignoring some glaringly obvious issues.

10.) For Kagawa to flourish, he needs players around him on his wavelength. its no use having him playing with Young, Valencia, Welbeck, Cleverly etc. He wasn't player of the year in Germany for no reason and LVG is well aware of that. If he is used in a role behind the striker with players around him like Mata, Sanchez, Muller, DiMaria etc in front of CM players with a brain like Kroos or Schweinsteiger etc, he will have a lot more impact for us than we have seen and than Rooney would have in the same role with the same players.

11.) I would say if Rooney had the same supply line that you are referring to, he would have 40 assists next season. How odd that for Kags to floursh we need a better midfield, but that is not the case for Rooney though.

12.) He "was" the player of the year, he certainly is not good enough for the team to be built around him and everything to go through him. Mata in his short stint has proved, the difference in class. That should talk about how Kagawa has failed in his tenure here. He is not good enough.

13.) Kagawa is a good player don't get me wrong, but he is so good in the fans of some United fans who can only be basing that on his form elsewhere. He hasn't been particularly good for us, even when played in his best position, though he has had the odd good game.

14.) Rooney doesn't possess the skills needed to play in the kind of role Kagawa and Mata play. For Rooney to get his stats, he has needed pretty much everything going through him. How many times does he miscontrol the ball when we are on a break? how many times does he lose the ball? how many times are his final balls/shots just not good enough. We need players on the same wavelength, it's not just needing better players, Rooney and his touch and passing aren't on this wavelength and never will be. We all want quick, short passing which is what Kagawa/Mata do best. Neither are blessed with pace but with them the first few yards are in the head so they get away with it, Rooney just hasn't got it unfortunately. I used to be one of his biggest fans and even owned a t-shirt with his name on many years ago, but he has not got to where he should be and I believe he has brought it on himself.

15.) Lol
Nothing else just lol

16.) Without possesing the requisite skills as you say, his end product has been light years ahead of Kagawa. At the end of the day, fancy "keep ball, tidy neat side passing" won't win you games. Like I said, there is a case in point for Mata, but for Kagawa, I am sorry he is fast turning out to be the next Veron. The fact is I can remember having more good games than Kagawa, says a lot. He is overhyped and is living on past reputation. I am yet to see the quick short passing that you say Kagawa is good at. All I have seen is someone who is scared to take risks and play it sideways and is bundled of the ball more easily than even an Januzaj. Talk of people slating Cleverly, Kagawa had zero goals and probably 2 assists the entire season playing 30 games. Like I say Mata is much much better than Kagawa presently.

17.) Who would you suggest he should have been playing the quick passing game with? Valencia? Young? Cleverley? Rooney? Welbeck? Carrick? Fellaini? Truth is we don't have the players to play with the guy except now Mata who is still settling. Did you watch any games when Mata and Kagawa were on together towards the end of the season? Some of the football was a pleasure to watch. If we can add a few more players on their wavelength, we will see amazing things from both of them. Rooney will score plenty playing up top too when he is in in front of RVP, he just doesn't have what is needed to play further back, running a lot and demanding the ball permanently don't count for anything at the top level. He is a striker and that is where he needs to be.

18.) I don't know what games you were watching Brendan but two of Kag's best performances came linking up with Rooney. Leverkusen and Norwich. Please check how many games we won with Mata/Kagawa starting. So blaming anyone but Kagawa I see. He had been poor irrespective of the players around him. Mata has scored or assisted with the same poor bunch. Try some other Kagawa excuse, this ain't working. 2 years, look at Silva, Oscar and Mata. The difference is clear.

19.) Deeps we will never agree on this one fella. We will have to wait and see how LVG sees it but I think you may be disappointed my friend. He knows how good Kagawa is and has already commented on it. If he is intending to use his usual 433 type formation then there is only one place for a striker which we all know is RVP. He may try Rooney elsewhere but but if he isn't happy with his performances then he will have no problems in dropping him. He won't kiss his backside like Moyes did and others do.

I, personally, don't think he is an LVG type player and doesn't possess the skills to adapt to the new system that is likely to be introduced. I think he will be given his chance but I just don't see him taking it and being happy being moved around with RVP up top as the talisman. I can see him getting p*ss ed off and demanding a move elsewhere.

20.) You are right we won't agree on this one for sure. It was not a debate on Rooney either, I will eagerly wait to see what happens. IMO, RVP is on the wrong side of age for me to build a team around him, coupled with frequent injuries. I think people misunderstand LVG to an extent. If Rooney could play for a manager like SAF and do the job, I don't see a problem here. Add to that his 5 year contract plus the salary he draws plus the ambassador for the club thingie, I think you will be disappointed my friend. You may just have to put up with his face til he retires ;) . You have coped up well from last year LOL.

03 Jun 2014 13:04:46
I just wanted to follow on from shappys fantastic post yesterday which was a great job mate. I agree that kroos won't join utd and neither will fabregas. Kroos is at possibly the strongest club in world football at the moment and without champions league football whether he would fit into lvg's plans or not. To get him would mean rooney type wages. Fabregas who is a Barcelona born arsenal fan I think would be near impossible to sign without cl football. And for me is chelsea bound. Hummels is another I don't see coming and whilst for me he is one of if not the best around I think he will stay at dortmund. With the other world class act we were interested in vidal will either stay at juve or join real madrid.

Players I think and hope to see at ot next season are shaw, classie and indi. Whilst more are needed i'm hoping the likes of cuadrado, witsel, depay, eriksen, Carvalho and de sciglio are in the mix with rooney, Cleverley, kagawa (he's way over rated plus powell deserves his chance) buttner and wellcrap sold on.

1.) We need to bring in a top notch CB. We already have three good CB's, we need an accomplished experienced CB so we should be going all out for Hummels. Shaw would be great for LB. If Konoplyanka can be brought in then great. Sanchez would be another good option. I would hope to see someone like Schweinsteiger bought for midfield. We have all these Dutch options, but we need proven quality this summer and if no UCL makes it difficult, then we need to pay the players more to sign. It's important that we do not bring in a load of average Joes to find out that we actually have players better than them already at the club. That would be disappointing and pointless.

2.) We have to target Hummels. PSG have signed David Luiz, Bayern have got Garay and Barcelona want Marquinhos so I think we are fairly high up on the list if he is to leave Dortmund this year.

I agree with redseven. I think also we were only looking at him as we new vidal wasn't available until the summer. I think come summer unless fellaini turns into pirlo vidal will be the primary target.

Is there any substance to the Kroos rumours? I don't see Bayern selling tbh. would be delighted if true though.

Agreed! If we could get him now him and mata we would be vastly improved. Really made up about mata. Been Chelsea's best player two seasons running. My new favorite utd player! Just need a full back and centre back as well in the next 8 days. Not counting me chickens!

If this is true I'd be delighted. For me Moyes was never the answer utd needed a manager who had managed very top flight previously Inc champions league. Moriniho, Klopp, even Blanc would have been better for me. And as for Ferguson come back as interim? No thank you! Did you read or read about his book? Arrogant, nasty ****! Slagging off players that without whom you may not have had the success you dud do. Thanks for the trophies fergie but the sight of your arrogant pink face makes my blood boil! Rant over!

I think that there is probably interest in both but as others have said why would juve let both go especially mid season. Like I said the other day I would be stunned to see pogba come back to utd. I know psg have shown interest in him and that juve don't seem to be saying that he's not available. I just think we will be out bidded and someone else will offer more money. With regards to vidal I think he's the more likely of the two. I would however be delighted with either.

Its literally the second coming of Christ! I would have him back in a heart beat he's my favorite player of all tine. We may never see another in our generation and for me the Pele of our time.

Come on though is nobody even a little excited? Jose did say 4 signings and maybe a surprise.

*hiding in shame* ill re phrase that to best Celt manager I the league before anyone notices. Either way moyes sucks worse than my accent recognition skills and needs his p45 before we struggle with a Europa league spot. We need klopp or someone who would be able to at least attract players and also have tactical knowledge that exceeds the primary school teachers level of moyes.

Totally agree with you bilko. Fergje should have absolutely zip involvement. For me it has to be klopp! And. Praying DM gets the boot sooner rather than later. Sick of the give him time bull he shouldn't have got the job anyway. Best Scottish manager in the league manages Liverpool.

Huggy I completely agree mate. If we don't make top 4 we can forget about the likes of Reus, gundoggan, vidal, mangala etc coming in and also the possibility van persie. And Rooney may well want to leave on top of the fact replacements for evra, Ferdinand, etc etc this summer is going to see a lot of us utd fans needing therapy.

Agree with all those syd mate. Think my absolutely face players are.

My very face player to watch ever though was ronaldinho. Whn he was at his peak he was unplayable.
