Apparently the kids from Alder Hay hospital went to see Daniel Sturridge for Christmas this year.

Happy Christmas everyone.

This joke has probably been posted already, but it's a good one, so there you are.

I was thinkning today about our lack of 1st team signings and wonderd if it compares to when S. A. F threw all the kids into the team, with the Fledglings, did we sign anyone big that season?.
Is Moyes (and S. A. F in choosing Moyes) thinking we can do it again with Zaha, Powell, Lingard, Januzaj, Keane etc?.

Im still in the camp that thinks Moyes can't attract big players to the club, but it's food for thought.

How many players choose to go to a club based on the manager?

Can we offer champions league football? Yes

Can we offer competitive wages? Yes just look at what Chunk is on.

Are we competitive in our domestic league? Well 5 titles out of the last 7 would suggest so, and runners up twice.

Can we offer the chance to play with world class players? Yes. van Persie, Carrick, Vidic are all regarded as world class players.

So do we really think that players are turning us down because of the manager? Piffle.

2.) We didn't make any major signings but we did have one Eric Cantona return from a 9 month suspension. If dithering Dave can come up with someone of equivalent ability then I'll be a very happy man!

A photo of Moyes taking training session recently has been posted on . It shows (unbelievably) a fit and trim looking Anderson!. Rooney looks in good condition too.

Is Anderson worth one more chance IF he's in good condition? It would mean that he can work on match fitness and sharpness in pre-season rather than running off all those pies.

BloodRedSummer

1.) Wooton and Petrucci are in there too.

would be good to see Petrucci get a good pre season and see what he is like in the 1st team setup.

Petrucci, Powell, Januzaj could all be big players for us given the playing time.

2.) Just checked it out and you're right Anderson is looking a lot fitter!

I feel a consistently fit and injury free Anderson could be like a new signing and a very good one at that!

To me he is still a class player with his clever passes and driving runs that unlock defences. Hopefully under Moyes we can get the best out of him.

3.) A thread that pleases! I think Anderson is massively underrated. I'm really interested to see how Moyes (underrated too) gets on in with what he actually has at united, compared to what he had at Everton. I don't think we need huge changes to have a title contending team. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the big signings like most of our fans. I have my personal preferences in the unlikely Vidal or Veratti with Reus or Ozil. The youth of Shaw perhap. ? But.

4.) Oops (posted before completed above)

I would take pride in winning a championship with what we have also. I feel our team knows each other as a unit. They have not been massively changed over the recent years, unlike Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and even Arsenal. That is something that gives us a strong core. I'd happily keep Rooney, Anderson, Evra, and even Nani. And still think they'll work wonders under a new regime. With guys like Kagawa, Jones and Powell etc progressing. Glimpses of Januzaj and co. Very interesting this 'colour coded chart' Moyes had in his old office which he won't elaborate on, apparently his biography writer said this was for each player. And was hushed when he quizzed Moyes on it. A personal view on each of player.

5.) Sydney, I have to slightly disagree with you about only having one defensive midfielder in our squad. Carrick, Jones and Anderson offer defensive screening to the back four.

Personally, I don't really like the idea of a Fellaini type of player at United albeit the deficiencies when we play against the likes of YaYa Toure where we can be outmuscled. Thiago is the type of creative player we can all appreciate and crave as fans and I think having a three with Carrick and a much fitter looking Anderson (who should be given his last chance by Moyes) with Kagawa and Rooney supporting RVP would be a fantastic attacking force. Anderson on his day can put the best of midfielders in his pocket and if we have lost out on Strootman then I'd be happy to see Anderson used as an enforcer type player

Should we acquire Baines then the full backs can offer width rather than Valencia and Young.

Ianskip

6.) I agree with the fullbacks adding width and us packing the midfield. I also agree that Anderson, Thiago and especially Carrick can intercept play, but only Jones is the midfield steel we can actually call a defensive midfielder. We could easily play a midfield three of say Thiago, Carrick & Cleverley/Anderson/Jones, but when you are playing with a two man midfield it will be difficult with just Thiago and Carrick. If Rooney is staying the last thing we want is for him to keep dropping deep to help out a two man midfield. We need a midfield that keeps Rooney in attack. The reason SAF asked Rooney to drop deep was because Carrick and Scholes/Cleverley/Anderson wasn't able to deal with being outnumbered. It's not about quality, it's about quantity. You need numbers in midfield and Rooney dropping back does us no favours.

Sydney!

7.) . It's not about quality, it's about quantity. You need numbers in midfield and Rooney dropping back does us no favours.

Sydney!
There has never been a statement on this site I have disagreed with more.
It's all about quality, do you think munichs system would work with out quality players or Barcelona's.
The best teams are fluid they " flood" the midfield at tge right time but they play with technical gifted footballers who can play a variety of roles nit just dcm.
4-2-3-1 is popular because it's fluid it's constantly changing to 4-5--1, 4-3-3.

"It's not about quality it's quantity"
The worse statement I've ever read on this site
Jred

8.) You can try and twist my words as much as you like Jred, but what I said was pretty straight forward, even for you. We were overrun due to being outnumbered in midfield. If we are outnumbered again next season we will again be overrun. We are not being overrun due to quality, it's because of quantity. We simply need an extra body in midfield.

Sydney!

9.) See above. clicked reply to wrong thread

10.) So we stick with a three man midfield then! Only go to a two man midfield where we're not going to be outnumbered. The principles of wing play have been ingrained over the years and I'm all for keeping tradition at OT. I used to go when Daly and Coppell were employed, but this tactical style seems less fashionable and in European games especially the need to keep retention is paramount.

I'm hoping the new manager tweaks things to offer a more structured, interchangeable style of play especially with the inconsistent displays of Young, Valencia and Nani who admittedly can still offer a solution for those plan B moments if needed.

The argument of whether Rooney can play with RVP and Kagawa is the one nagging doubt in my mind and therefore the question of cashing in on someone at the most valuable price needs addressing.

A Mata, Hazard style of player may be more appropriate

It's funny that Rooney handed a transfer request in a couple of seasons ago because we weren't investing big money in new talent and as soon as we spend big on RVP he wants out.

11.) Syd
There are plenty of times we played with 5 in the middle and struggled, clevs struggled last year as did Anderson scholes and giggs so did our wingers.
It is all about quality.
Jred

12.) I have to agree with Jred on this.
Just putting numbers won't help. Didn't we or any other top teams score against lesser teams even if they defend with 11 players in their own half.
You need specific skills to close down opponents, intercept, know how on when to apply pressure, positions, etc.

13.) Syd how many games last year did our midfield get over run.
I think it performed poorly in a few and lacked quality and technical ability in a few, but overrun?
Jred

14.) Ian, I would prefer to see a much busier midfield next season with inverted wingers as opposed to out and out wingers. It will keep things tighter in midfield and that way we may be able to get away with using Carrick & Thiago in a midfield two. If we were to play with Young and Valencia hogging the corner flags we will leave several gaps and Carrick & Thiago will get overrun. I think Kagawa and Zaha/Cleverley/Anderson/new either side of Rooney (if he is here) with Carrick & Thiago could work, but it will not work with traditional wingers. That's my opinion anyway.

Sydney!

World cup is over 2-3 weeks normally right? maybe 2-3 before that to get the squad together and working.
So 6 weeks tops, depending on how far teams get, will be needed for the squad to be away from thier clubs.

I'd think that there would be a shift in start and finish dates for that season and then a gradual shift back for the next 2 or 3 seaons to soak up the fixtures that would normaly be played in that period.
Either that or all these rich oil tycoons who bribed Fifa can pay for every team to have air conditioned training facilities and stadiums, trouble is then everyone would get ill!.

Imo the bloody thing shouldn't be played there anyway, next thing we will have to play in Antarctica 'cos it's an emerging market and they can bribe the reps with the new oil money they have.

Think i'd have to choose from these (in no particular order):

Oliver Bierhoff
Alessandro Del Pierro
Claude Makelele
Pavel Nedved
Zidane
Lothar Matthaus
and maybe even Gheorghe Hagi

Im begining to think that Arsenal will be entitlerd to 50% of any profit that Barca make on Fabregas rather than 50% of the overall transfer fee, that makes more sense.

But as you said, it's IF they decide to sell.

If he joined us, the pessimistic side of me thnks that we'd get 2-3 years then he'd be wanting to go back to Barca anyway when Iniesta and Xavi retire.
