Just read that about 10 minutes ago (12.10) Athletic Bilbao have confirmed in a press conference that Manchester United did make a €30m bid for herrera and said that he will leave if the €36m release clause is met.

Doni

1.) If this is true, pay the extra 6 and sign the lad.

2.) If this is true then its an absolute no brainer. Its not as if we will have been 'had' either paying over the odds, as it is a release clause. Ideal midfielder for us. I know YouTube always highlights a players best bits, but from what I've seen, I think he would fit in perfectly. Either we cough this one up or just expect to firefight through this season.

3.) Athletic chiarman Josu Urrutia confirmed on Friday that he has rebuffed a bid from David Moyes' side, who have been looking for midfield reinforcements all summer.

"There's an offer from Manchester [United] for Ander Herrera, " he told reporters. "Our club is different, it bases it self on sentiment. Our goal is not to make money. We received the proposal last night and we said that we don't negotiate for our players.

"For a player to leave, he first has to show that he wants to leave the club then deposit the clause."

Ander's release clause stands at €36m (£30.75m), and they have told the Premier League champions that they must match that figure if they want to sign the 24-year-old.

The Basque club last summer insisted that Bayern Munich pay the full clause for Javi Martinez, who eventually moved to Bavaria for €40m.

4.) Agree with Zanysteve.

why haggle over the 6m euro and potentially miss out.

5.) The way we are doing our businesses is so frustrating.

6.) I've have also heard that the president didn't specify who the bid was for. But said that a bid was made for one of their players, that it was 'non-negotiable' and that the player would only leave if they asked to or if the buy out clause is met. I'm guessing many people said it was Man Utd's bid for Herrera amid reports of a bid.

7.) I think the real problem here is that woodward, or whoever is making these bids, obviously hasn't got a clue how the whole transfer side of things works because it's becoming a sad joke now. Either that or we have no intention of actually buying any of these players and it's all just a big con. "well we tried but. ". I can just about handle the former, but if it's the latter then it's very worrying indeed. All together now. GLAZERS OUT! :-)
ps Surely Beckham could afford to buy the club! A true fan as owner. I can but dream.

8.) Moyes on Ander Herrera bid: "I won't disclose any names. I'll just let the clubs deal with it and we'll try and do it in a professional manner."

9.) Peely,

You think Beckham has £800 million+?

I think you have misjudged what the club is worth and what a footballer earns somewhat if that was a serious comment.

10.) I must admit I don't know much about this player. If someone would explain to me and any others who may not know of him that would be cool. Also I agree with what was said about haggling over six million euros! As a club with Micky Mouse handling transfers were not in a position to be haggling when this summer we've been made to look like clowns! Also for all the glazer bashers your living in a state or mass dilution I you think we would have spent what we have done in the past few years had the club remained a plc! I'm also a Tampa bay buccaneers fan and former Tampa resident and whilst they are not the most likeable people in the world I can assure you they did not buy the club to make it a failure! They are very professional business people and our success since they took over should at least be acknowledged if nothing else! I'm now awaiting my verbal death

11.) He'd be very good for us IMO. deeper lying playmaker than a Kagawa but also much better defensively. Very comfortable on the ball too. Hence Barcelona's interest. I don't think he's worth the relase clause yet but I've no doubt he will be. O understand spanish VAT laws are ridiculous, something like 50% this is probably why we have activated the release clause.

12.) Sorry that was supposed say, why we HAVEN'T activated his release clause.

13.) Can't understand why VAT is like that because that's ridiculous, but even so, the amount offered was apparently 30 mil euros. With the release clause and VAT IT would only be around 9 mil euros more. I know that's still a fair sum of money, but with Herrera's age, potential and already proven talent for Bilbao, I think we should seriously invest in this guy.
I'm trying not to sound like a plastic supporter who just wants to see the biggest signings, but I really think this is a guy who could help bring years of success

14.) Why oh why are we trying to buy players on the cheap. Spurs are getting all they apply for, although be funny if bale does, nt leave, that will be some debt for Mr Levy . Come Moyes and Woodward put ya money were it matters, improving squad, Is Zaha still our player, next best thing since sliced bread they said.Frustrating as hell .

15.) Have to agree with rock the red on the spurs situation there haha. Levy will have debt and one seriously disgruntled player. Will serve him right thinking he can out-do everybody. Real could just pull the plug. That all said I think Bale will go before Monday night.

16.) €36 for a 24 year old that has never played senior international football, I know the lad is good but we should be buying 1st team internationals not players that don't even make the squad!

17.) Well Juan Matta hardly gets into the spanish side so it is not really relevant.

Spain is currently a conveyor belt for some of the finest midfielders around and Bibao has some great players, De Marcos is also a great talent. They struggled last year with injuries and issues with their coach, bielsa and the club hierarchy are an interesting bunch to say the least, so don't judge a book by it's cover.

He is a very good player but doubt we will land him as Bilbao is one of most difficult clubs to do a deal with. {Ed044's Note - Mata has played 9 international games for Spain during 2013 so far. You must be thinking about another player.}

18.) Ed044

I know he gets caps now but never on the pitch in major games. Shelvey has had a few caps for England too but that does not make him a genuine midfield choice.

Don't get me wrong Mata is a great player but can't crack into the team when the likes of Busquet is an automatic choice and when fit xavi, iniesta, fabregas, silva come next.

{Ed044's Note - What you said was "Juan Matta hardly gets into the spanish side". I pointed out that was wrong as he has in the past nine months played 9 times for his country at senior level. I don't understand how you now seem to think Jonjo Shelvey (who has not played at all for England this year) is anything like a reasonable analogy. Out of the players you list - Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and Silva - only one of those five (Iniesta) has made more appearances for Spain this year. You don't seem to have any sort of grasp of the situation at all.}

19.) Well you certanly made me eat my hat. Well said and what's that saying. Oh yea il think, bvefore I speak lol

Fellaini and Baines are on the bench tonight. Apparently the commentator said that they were both supposed to start. Didn't think much of it until I heard someone mention that they would be cup tied if they play tonight.

Doni

1.) I hardly think that being cup-tied in the Capital One Cup would prevent any deal going ahead. do you?

2.) I do not think it matters too much if they are cup-tied from the League Cup, but will be slightly interesting to see if they are brought on.

3.) I would assume Man United would be overly happy with it. What if we got to the final and can't even play 2 starters? Anyway I was just speculating why jr

4.) No, It wouldn't, Timbo, but if you knew the players were all but gone, the right thing to do would not needless render them ineligible for a competition, however trivial in the grand scheme of things it is.

Interesting that David Moyes didn't deny being in for Bale. Even if we were though I doubt he would move to United.

On another note, hats off to Rooney who played very well tonight and gave his all

According to Alistair Ferguson a fee has been agreed at 20 million rising to 24 million. Apparently he's reliable.

He headed/shouldered the ball before it went in.

I seen that too. Is this person reliable?

I think it is also encouraging that Bilbao have brought 19 players for tomorrows match against Real madrid so that they have a spare player in the case that Herrera drops out.

You must have been watching a different game because that wasn't 4-5-1.
