Garay looks a very established centre half. Eds any update on him are we still interested in him?. What a terrible week for the premier league in Europe. Fans eds thoughts have we fallen behind again?

Major mc

{Ed002's Note - There has been every opportunity to buy Garay already - there is also interest from Italy now.}

1.) The Garay thing bothers me.

First, SAF earmarks him as a potential signing, which Moyes decides against.

Then, Garay almost joins a Russian club, before it falls through and our interest apparently returns.

If we don't sign Garay, it would be Dithering Dave at his finest.Let's look at the facts:

- 27yrs old, perfect age to add some experience to our CB options while not being 'too old' to make it a pointless venture

- At £10-15m (I believe), the IDEAL price, value for money.

- Very highly rated at both club and international level.

For me, it's a no-brainer. Moyes should have already secured this guy, considering Vidic and Rio will be leaving. He ticks all the boxes.

2.) Moyes only wants players he can't get. If we are lucky he may finally sign some players he can get, maybe addressing the glaring deficiencies that this squad has.

3.) We blew the chance to sign him at the end of last season thanks to Moyes.

4.) I think Moyes has decided against Garay simply because he prefers Mangala. I think Garay may still sign once we miss out on Mangala in the summer.

5.) Syd

I could see us chasing Mangala publicly for most of the summer, realising we can't afford him, then turning to Garay but I have a funny feeling that ship will have sailed by that point.

6.) RS, we do have substantial sums to spend this summer compared to our average spend, but we will not be held to ransom. Chelsea and City both want Mangala but have both baulked at the asking price. I do not expect us to get him, I wouldn't be surprised to see PSG come in for him at some point. I hope we do not keep Garay waiting any longer as he has been waiting for us to seal the move for him. He wants the move, it's in our hands.

7.) Or maybe just maybe, it was Wenger saying he did not want him back. Here's to next season.

Hi eds do u think we are watching the end of rio

Major mc

{Ed004's Note - Yes and Vidic}

1.) Ed004 - Agreed, but add Cleverley, Young, Valencia, RvP, Wellbeck, Kagawa, Smalling, Evra, Carrick and Fellaini as well.

2.) And hopefully Cleverley he was substandard!

3.) Also a few others. Terrible performance, no pace and can't keep the ball.

We are a mile behind and let the surgery commence

4.) Rio was finished a while ago. Once he lost his pace to deal with mistakes he was done.

5.) So he wasn't the most consistent defender last year? short memory there

6.) Yes very short memories indeed melwing well said, rio had a good season last year, he isn't being used correctly in my opinion by moyes, moyes played him week in week out early on in the season and then kept him out for a long spell, this isn't the way to use him in my opinion, he needs to be rested at the right times, all though his legs may have gone his reading of the game is second to none as proved last year, his distribution of the ball is really poor this year though for some reason, he's taking far too much time on the ball ( maybe a lack of movement in front of him and midifielders such as cleverly hiding and not showing for it ), looks a man who has totally lost confindence at the minute like a lot of them!

7.) 27 Feb 2014 00:36:35
I don't know about the end of rio more like the end of half the team, surely it's got to be whatever system they are supposed to be playing you feel for moyes but that's where the buck ends I just think his days are numbered , they say the difference between 4th and 5 th place is 50 million next season. i'm not sure a new team put together will have any immediate impact we may be a mid table team for a while every club is improving.

8.) We don't have short memories we just see beyond the blinkers

Eds I see in the paper Stephen derfour is in England for talks with Fulham. Would he be worth a punt and secondly were we ever really interested. I know fergie wrote him a letter etc

Major mc

{Ed001's Note - it has been a long time since United were interested in him, he has never quite lived up to his reputation. One of those who shone as a youngster but the potential has yet to be realised. I very much doubt United would decide to jump in, Moyes likes to do a lot of background checks on his targets, he wouldn't have time to do them on Defour. Also, right now, he would be nothing more than a panic buy, which is also not Moyes's style.}

1.) Panic buy not moyes style don't know about that one what about big fellani

Hi eds or anyone just wondering what happened to our interest in Kurt zouma number 1 and secondly munian from Bilbao. Love to know as both would smashing signings.
{Ed002's Note - Zouma did not leave St Et this past summer as, like others, he was concerned about either being shipped out on loan or sat on the bench. There remains interest in him from a number of clubs including both Manchester sides, but he is not first choice for MU. I am not aware of any interest in Muniain from MUFC. They were offered the player back in January 2012.}

Major mc

1.) Ed if he isn't number one choice who is? {Ed002's Note - Garay.}

2.) It seems strange that we are still interested in Garay. I am surprised that we didn't sign him during the summer. This SHOULD be Rio's last year so I assume either he or Subotic will come in over the summer. If it's Subotic then Kagawa will be offered back I am sure.

Great post mick1 agreed with everything you said except buying fellaini. Touch of a donkey overrated and over priced. Played well for Everton but like moyes out of his depth at united. Fellaini is too slow on the ball for uniteds traditional high tempo game. IMO panic buy after all main targets turned us down. Please don't call fellaini a great player.

Major mc

1.) Ngiak wonders how many games in the last 3 years the team played a "high tempo game"?
gan

2.) Major,

Then please don't call Fellaini a panic buy. He was a target all summer and we eventually got him, that's not a panic buy.

3.) 27 Feb 2014 09:10:45
Fellaini was bought with minutes to spare and we overpaid to get him. that's a panic buy.If we had landed Fabregas/Herrera there is no chance Fellaini would have been signed
How daft do we look now refusing to meet Herreras buyout and ending up with half the player in Fellaini and ironically paying more than his buyout clause when it expired. great post btw mick!

4.) Major, paying for Fellaini 27 million was a panic buy. We paid more than his worth, but he was a target all along.

And no, we have not been performing well for the last Fergy seasons, but we were playing much, much better football at the time. We wanted Klopp to get a more continental style going, and yet Moyes has taken us a couple of steps back

5.) Fellaini too slow for our 'traditional high tempo game '
How do you explain Carrick then?

6.) Fellaini was certainly a target, but maybe 3rd or 4th choice, we were exploring better options first. He was certainly on the list of targets though.

7.) Fellaini was always a target. It only went to deadline day because Woodward tried to be smart and get him on the cheap.

Hi eds I posted the other day that I didn't think 100 million was enough to overhaul this squad. You partially agreed and said that it would take 18 months however which is fair. My question is who do u see as manager in 18 months time?

Major mc

{Ed004's Note - Things can change a lot over the space of 18 months. I can't see it still being Moyes on current form}

Fair enough gds2 and ajh I'm not gloating far from it. I despise the position my club is in at the moment. I thought moyes was appointed on a wave of emotions. I felt he didn't have the tactical know how nor the international draw for foreign players to come to the club. I feel sorry for him yes but sentiment should go out the window when the best club in the world is being made a laughing stock. I unfortunately predicted though last summer and got lashed for it by fellow posters. I've a question for eds and ajh how long did the club know that fergie would call it a day before he did, and could they of gotten a proven manager in the time span better than moyes

Major mc

1.) Major,

No worries, it would appear a lot of people were right, me and AJH were just willing to give a new manager a chance. Problem is, we still have to give him a chance because the board aren't going to sack him by the look of it.

2.) GDS, there is no shame is supporting your club's manager. All of us want to see it work out, but we would be lying if we didn't admit that deep down in our hearts that Moyes is not the right man for the job. I think players need to respect a manager, they need to believe in him. MU players must be thinking that he hasn't won a bean in his career, not even a League Cup. He has a poor record against the top sides in England and has little European experience. I just think the players have no confidence in the manager. In all honesty it would be easier to sack Moyes and bring in a manager with some real mettle and proven success, but the club will not want to look foolish by doing that. SAF will be telling the board to stick with Moyes. Question is, is Moyes the right man to give substantial funds to? I think we will be okay as Moyes seems to want the best players, but I am not convinced he is the man to lead the team long term. I think if SAF was to return for a season, we would be an almost immediate turn around. Simply because confidence will return to the players.

3.) I have been one of the people saying moyes should be given time. I would have loved a star appointment that gets us excited like when a major player signs but wasnt worried when we went for moyes. The reason I wasnt worried is because I thought moyes would be a steady hand to steer the ship and slowly slowly implement changes he felt necessary. That never happened and just about everythin except the squad ( that needed a freshen up ) has tried to be changed at once. Coaches, tactics, identity etc. I would love for things to turn around and for it all to turn out rosey as i'm sure we all would. But I got to say its getting harder to think of how without coming to the conclusion of a managerial change. If that was the case then it should only happen when the perfect person is available. don't want us to be like evryone else always choppin and changing.

Hi folks yep we all agree that something drastic will have to be done with team i.e team and squad overhaul. My question to fans and eds is if u were the board of united would u throw 200 million quid at moyes to spend?

Major mc

1.) Don't you mean another 200 million, I think between Mata, Rooney and Felliani fees and wages he's spend the best part of it already.

2.) Major,
given the signings of Fellaini, and Mata, new deals for Nani and Rooney, I imagine he wouldn't be far off that already. I thought on Saturday that Utd played quite well and that maybe Moyes had finally got a performance to build on.
I think Roy Keane's assessment was spot on last night and even given the bad blood between him and Fergie, he was visibly very angry and cares deeply about the club.
I think some of the players have given up. Van Persie in his own way completely lit the fuse under Moyes with his assault on tactics, players taking his spaces etc.
I might support Liverpool but that doesn't stop me feeling for fans of a great club being decimated by a poor manager. He is breaking records that took Utd years to create.
I don't think he deserves time. He has done nothing to suggest he will change. There is no sign that he has any idea/plan going forward.
Here's the thing; WHEN DID UTD START WORRYING ABOUT HOW OTHER TEAMS PLAYED? I'm sure the answer from any Utd fan will coincide with the day Moyes walked into the job!

3.) Personally, i'm happy with the 2 players Moyes has brought in so far. Rooney, I hope, isn't on the £300k reported but, at least he is on a longer contract if he loses interest again, so we may get a decent price for him. Replacing him now would have cost a £40m+ transfer fee plus big wages and we would have struggled to get over £25m for him this summer, so financially, it makes some sense to renew his contract for now.
