Does anyone else think that Moyes' fate lies fairly and squarely in the hands of Fergie? Without a proven winning track record, no European experience and not having given even the slightest indication that he is taking us in the right direction, it is arrantly clear that the only reason Moyes was brought in (and is still here) is based purely on Fergie's recommendation.

Whether he does so openly or behind closed doors, the time has come for Fergie to either admit he made a mistake or persuade the Board to keep faith with Moyes. Ironic that arguably the most important decision he will make comes after his retirement.

resol

1.) Why don't the board just overule fergie end of

2.) Resol you are totally correct.
As an Evertonian I was unhappy with the way in which Moyes was 'approached' by SAF (but I've discussed this previously on this site so will move on).
Fergie wanted Moyes and persuaded your board to back him. However things have now turned extremely sour this season. SAF is extremely quiet at present. Is he waiting for the Glazers to act first or will he come out with an admission that he made a mistake sanctioning the Board to sack Moyes at the end of the season?
One thing's for certain. I doubt Moyes will given time over the summer to potentially waste your war chest when it could be offered to someone else as bait in attracting a replacement.

So far Moyes has spent 70m on Fellaini and Mata. It's still far too early to judge them, but what I do have a patent difficulty with is where exactly, and in what roles, he intends to use them.

Even if he is given time to get all the players he needs, it doesn't answer this question. Let's say that he brings in two central midfielders (which we clearly need) plus a winger or two and another strike - where and how do Fellaini and Mata fit in?

The only possible reason I can think of is that they were bought as ultimate replacements for Carrick and Rooney respectively. If so, then are both imminently about to retire and/or leave? If not, then it begs the question as to why he is giving preference to signing replacements for these two rather than addressing our more pressing needs in midfield and defence.

resol

1.) They have not been bought as replacements, Fellaini possibly has long term but Mata and Rooney will play in the same team.

2.) Fresh!

The way I see it there are only 3 possible ways to accommodate both Rooney and Mata.

1) Play Rooney up top with Mata in the hole behind him

2) Break from the presently rigid formation of 2 wingers and play Rooney, Mata and Januzaj/Kagawa behind RVP

3) Play Mata out wide where he less effective

1) and 2) would make sense, but if 3) then he may just go the same way as Kagawa. Just saying that I think buying Fellaini and Mata should noy have been first priority.

Following on from a previous thread that unfortunately ended up in a personal mud-slinging match (understandable as frustration levels grow) let me add the following:

I watched the entire game against Fulham a second time, as torturous as it was. There must have been close to a dozen times that Rafael, Evra and Young had the opportunity to play a square ball to the likes of Rooney and Mata (who were in acres of space) rather than a hit-and-hope cross.

This begs the question as to whether they were under absolute strict orders to cross no matter what, or whether they themselves were culpable of simply not showing any inventiveness.

If the latter, then did Moyes pick up on this? Did he at least try rectify it by pointing it out to the players?

Am interested in what you guys think.

resol

1.) I agree, players are being told to play this way and its not working and they are unhappy with it as the body language of so many shows. The players that we have are good players, some great players so would have the intelligence to try something different after 60 crosses failed. So it can only be from on instruction can't it.
I am totally torn with Moyes at the moment. Many people pre warned me when he was appointed that he would turn us into a mediocre team with playing style and tactics. My response was "he wont, he can't we are to big for him to drag down" but I being made to eat humble pie at the moment a like so many UTD fans struggling to defend what is happening. When I say Moyes, I also include Steve Round and Phil Neville to, neither are as tactically good as Rene or Carlos Quiroz were and its showing big time.
Everyone says "when we get players in etc etc" but the players we have got now are a darn sight better than what they are being made to look now.

2.) I agree we needed to mix it up a bit and try something different than passing out wide and sticking it hopefully in the box. Just mix it up to keep them guessing. I know it was difficult because of the way fulham set up but we should have had more about us.
Its not just down to moyes though, its the individual quality. I've not watched it again but remember a few times mata pulling off and being in acres of space but not getting the ball. No matter what tactics the manager is pushing, if a player is in space but not passed to then that is down to the player with the ball, nobody else.

3.) 11 Feb 2014 12:07:15
I agree we needed to try something different. Mix it up a bit and keep them guessing. I know it was difficult the way fulham set up but we should have had more about us. And let's not forget they scored 2 goals. Whilst we are struggling to open the worst teams up, any team is creating chances against us simply by running through the middle.
Its not just moyes to blame for the fulham performance though, whilst his tactics obviously are pass it wide then stick it hopefully in the box, if a player pulls back and is in space on the edge of the box like mata often was then its up to the player with the ball to pick him out. that's not tactics just lack of individual quality

4.) Resol, I apologise for that, mate. I said at the time, I thought your post was a fair analysis.

It's all very well to say Moyes needs to be given time, but the question is given time for what? Those who feel he shouldn't be judged until he has assembled his own team are in for a very long haul. Anyone who believes we will sign 4 or 5 quality players in the summer is living in Fool's Paradise. Leaving aside whether or not the potential targets being bandied about are available or want to come, there's the small matter of an outlay in the region of 150m. Adding this to the 70m already spent takes up way past the 200m mark. This simply won't happen. I doubt even City, Chelsea or PSG would spend this kind of money in the short space of 12 months. At best we can hope for 1, with an outside possibility of 2 key signings in the next window. It will take a good few years for Moyes to assemble his own team.

In the interim this means 'giving him time' to impose his own philosophy and brand of football. From day one he has gone into every game with the exact same formation, played the same style and employed the same tactics. Despite the fact that it isn't working and our football (as well as results) gets progressively worse, there's not even as much as a hint of any variation in his game plan. By sticking so rigidly to it he's regularly forced to play the likes of Kagawa, Jones, Januzaj and now Mata out of position. At what point will he try something different? Does he have any intention, or is he even capable of changing his approach?
So, how much time should he be given and where, realistically, do you see him taking the club?

resol

1.) I'm sure he can play the gea at centre forward, mata in goal, Rooney at left back, rvp and kagawa to forge an unbeatable centre back partnership, and up front, we can have his favourite two of cleverly and young, and the middle of the park can be marshalled by no other than welbeck.
Anything is possible with DM!

2.) 07 Feb 2014 16:04:48
Who knows how long we give it or how low we have to go before someone within the club questions the appointment of Moyes. I pray for a win on Sunday but if the unthinkable were to happen do we have to listen to the transition theory one more time? Its a good job Sunderland, Everton, Spurs, Chelsea, City and Stoke don't have new managers or they could use the same lame excuse for their defeats. oh sorry they all have new managers and beat us. must just apply to us sadly

3.) Resol we all want continued success at Manchester United but sometimes you have to go backwards first in order to go forwards.
Although things are different nowadays it took SAF 5 seasons as manager to win his first trophy and then start a period of unparallelled success. I am not saying the same will happen with Moyes or probably any other manager at Manchester United but we have to give him time.
Why do we have to give him time you say? Well the team has been in decline for years with relatively little investment compared to most of our rivals both at home and abroad. That we can't blame on Moyes. SAF could probably get an extra 10-15% out of any player over almost any manager (except Mourinho) because of his stature in the game and hence why we have managed to maintain success with a declining team. We once had a midfield of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes and Keane! In todays game if those players were in their prime that would be the envy of the footballing world. Today we only have a shadow of that in our team.
I understand your concern about how much money DM will be allowed to spend but the truth of the matter is that this summer is going to bring the Glazers real committment to the club into question. If they do not back the manager and go on a big spending spree then they run the risk of having a period of no success and possible non qualification for the CL. Something that will effect the club turnover, profit and value. The Glazers are serious money men and so they will realise that this can't be allowed and that we will need to spend big in order to protect our sponsors etc.
I don't want Manchester United to yoyo in andn out managers as per many of our rivals. There are questions over Moyes's tactics/formations etc, but he is a man that listens, takes advice but then makes his own decisions. He has the best advisor in SAF and so we have to give him a chance to realise what needs to be done. He turned Everton around from 17th in his first season to 4th the following season.
We need to have patience in order to do things correctly. That is the Manchester United way!

4.) Just saw snippets of DM's pre-match press interview. He looks weary and haggard, with an air of complete defeatism. No sign of his usual smirk or snigger. Only seemed interested in trying to answer critics with excuses about the departures of Vidic and Muelensteen. Didn't look up for the challenge of Sunday's game, let alone the next 5 years. I almost felt sorry for what appears to be a broken man.

5.) Hoggy, please believe me that the last thing I want is for us to embark on a managerial merry-go-round. I simply question whether we have made the right choice as I cannot find a single positive in what he has done to date.

Your analogy with Fergie is an interesting one. Yes, he did not achieve instant success but he did make immediate changes. He got rid of the 'drinking' culture, instilled a greater work ethic, revamped the training and medical facilities and enhanced the youth system. He also gained immediate respect from the players - something I fear Moyes has lost completely and will find it difficult to regain.

All I'm saying is that if we have made an error, then let's rectify it as soon as possible.

6.) What a daft post nomidfield. RVP is left footed so surely he should play left back and Rooney at centre half ;)

7.) Nomidfield, sarcasm is such an unattractive quality. Truly the lowest form of wit. BELIEVE! :)

8.) Hoggy

Re your comment about yoyo managers

The aim and the glory is all about winning and playing good football not about having stability of one manager. Chelsea have done very well regularly changing their manager. Stability for stability sake is not good, if it's a top manager and it is earned then fine

I don't think David Moyes anticipated the downward spiral we are experiencing. While he may not have has immediate title aspirations, I believe he expected us to be there or there about by simply following the Fergie blueprint (style, formation, tactics and personnel) as closely as possible. This would have facilitated a smooth transition and given him time to gradually bring in 2 or 3 quality players and replace aging stars over the next 2 - 3 seasons. This clearly has not been the case and we rapidly heading towards a crisis.

I accept that it is not feasible to urgently make 5, 6 or 7 top signings, but what is of major concern is his complete reluctance (or inability) to adapt and make changes. Surely a different formation or tactics is worth a try. Why not give Kagawa an extended run or promote Zaha and/or other youth team players. To simply carry on as if nothing is wrong can never be right. This was epitomized yesterday by coming out in the 2nd half with absolutely no Plan B in the form of changes to formation, tactics or personnel.

I'm all for giving him time and being patient, but the slightest hint of what his future plans and vision are would be most welcomed.

resol

1.) Have you not been paying attention resol? Moyes is going to target 'the very best' and there is a queue of top players waiting to sign for Manchester United. Moyes will talk this up throughout every transfer window that he is in charge before spending silly money on a mediocre player at the end of the transfer window.

No matter how badly we do in the league Moyes will always insist that we can still win it. We could be twenty points off the top with six games to go and he'll still refuse to rule it out. He'll ignore advice from people who know the club and the players and instead opt to fire all of the backroom staff and bring his own clueless people in. He'll continue to insist on overexerting the players in training leading to more and more injuries. That's OK though - because then he'll be able to use the 'We'd have won if we'd had 'X' and 'Y' on the pitch' excuse - which totally excuses our mediocre performances. If by some miracle our top players are not all injured he will blame the referees as if there is some sort of conspiracy.

He'll refuse to play some of our top young players for mysterious reasons and will play others out of position until they demand to leave the club. If we're in danger of winning something (The Carling Cup, let's say) he'll field a ridiculously week team to make sure that we don't progress. It's OK though - because Swansea and Sunderland are two of the biggest clubs in world football so losing to them is fine.

That's what I've picked up so far after seven months. I'm sure things will be a little clearer in another twelve!

2.) LOL. "redseven" that is a fantastic assessment!

Please ring woodward and quote the same to him, that may help him and he's clearly not busy at the mo so may even take it on board!

3.) Champions - I'm afraid a call to Mr. Woodward wouldn't do much good. He seems more concerned with the name on the front of our shirts than the names on the back. Perhaps when the sponsors start pulling out he will start to pay attention to what's going on on the pitch rather than in his bank account.

There's no disputing that DDG is a superb shot-stopper. His problem always has been, and continues to be, an inability to command his area. He's woeful at dealing with crosses and hardly ever comes off his line to deal with loose balls in the area. Seems that the goalkeeping coaches are trying to work on this which probably led to him trying to deal with the cross that resulted in the goal on Saturday.

Last season (presumably on instruction from Moyes) his distribution consisted of hoofing the ball up-field as far and quickly as possible. This season he's at least trying to find a team mate and build from the back. This will improve, but I have my doubts on his commanding his area.

Perhaps, rather than the back 4 (or 5) not inspiring confidence in him, its the other way round - by not dealing with crosses or loose balls often leads to defenders panicking in the area.

What a wonderful post!

In 1966. I live in South Africa and in those days I played under 16 football for a team known as Highlands Park FC. Our kit was almost an identical replica of United's, ergo I became a supporter.

We did not get TV in South Africa until the late 70's so relied on radio, newspapers and magazines for any scrap of info I could get.

We also did not get British Football on TV until the mid 90's but through a work connection in London I used to get Betamax cassettes of 'Match of the Day' sent to South Africa. A bunch of us, fully dressed in MU kit used to sit around watching MOTD - albeit about 10 days after broadcast in the UK.

Nowadays we get every game broadcast live in South Africa.

Over the years I have managed to make 15 pilgrimages to Old Trafford. Am delaying the next one until we have a squad worth coming over to watch.

To me the best illustration of our style and tactics was the one time Rooney and Kagawa did have a neat interchange of passes resulting in Kagawa playing in Evra for clear shot at goal. Instead, he drove for the byline and tried to play in a low cross.

What a waste of an incredible footballing brain that is being allowed to rot on the bench. And to think that it's available to us without even having to dip into transfer funds!
