So 4 games in and here's my opinion, defensively not much change from last year Smalling has been excellent, Darmian and Shaw progressing, Blind looking comfortable on the ball and surprised how well he has adapted but there is still a doubt that remains about a midfielder playing at the back. I think we have a good number two goalkeeper in Romero but DDG situation still hangs over our heads and needs resolving either way. Our midfield looks strong with good competition for places, but I think Herrera needs to play more because he gives us much more going forwards than anyone bar Fellaini( in a toatally different way). Going forwards we are ok, but not spectacular I think Depay will be a good signing, 4 games in and still learning (quickly I hope). Mr Rooney needs a goal or someone to come in and threaten his place, Chica can be useful but needs to start games to find some form. We still need a player who can knit our good possession and nice football into an end product ( a knew Cantona if u like, although I have no idea who this is, we may already have in our ranks) just hope we can find him quickly. Sorry if this has been done to death just wanted to add my opinion, I'm still wary of LVG I like the way he handles the media but I'm not sure if he really can deliver the football and success we crave and desire, but I'm willing to let him prove me wrong and I'll always support our team whoever is chosen to play or manage, in the worst times and the best times. I love reading people's views on our current team, tactics, and signings on this website it really does brighten my day even when beast and jmb post!!!! (No offence meant) thanks to the eds who do a great job, long may it continue

earlier today sky sports posted stats of BS number of games last year, if I remember rightly it was between 25-30, now I'm not sure if he was injured or not selected for the games he missed button play that little amount of games after a World Cup win should only work in our favour, unless he's had a major injury? Can anyone please enlighten us? Ta

I read an article earlier that detailed that due to injury from the World Cup BS didn't play until November and then he was in and out of the team.

Possesion football wins you nothing!!! Not

If you speak in regards to Barcelona last night then you jibe is inaccurate. They play possession football with several twists including quick counter attacking and making use of the greatest player to ever have played very effectively. Possesion football with average players wins you nothing is more like it.

2.) 07 Jun 2015 01:25:35
Messi, Suarez and Neymar plus possession = win.

3.) 07 Jun 2015 06:30:36
Jmb, i think you'll find that any football with ordinary players wins you nothing.

4.) 07 Jun 2015 07:30:51
Is that right imightbesomeone? Tell that Jose who won the the CL with average Porto and Inter teams. You build your tactics on the strengths of what you've got.

{Ed025's Note - fair point that JMB..

5.) 07 Jun 2015 07:35:58
Playing quick forward passes and attacking in numbers wins you games. Movement, look at all 3 of their goals!

1. Left Back running into space left by their left winger, Midfield runner passing it to other midfield runner in the box. Young would have been stood out wide so no space, Rooney and Fellaini wouldn't have been anywhere near the box or lingering on the back post for a cross which would have arrived 30 seconds later.

2. Striker following up a shot, we are lucky 2 have 2 men forward let alone 2 running for a rebound

3. Counter attack at pace, this happened all game with 5 on 3's. We never outnumbered the defensive players or broke from midfield aside from once against Arsenal, QPR and Yeovil.

How many times this season did we have a defence scrambling, comparing our game with Barcelonas is just wrong, only comparison is the number of players on the field?

Beast you know that old saying with the nail on the head, well you just smashed that nail in so far it's coming out the other end mate. Good post.

{Ed025's Note - very good...if a little whiney.. :)

Jmb
Fair point.
I forgot to add 'mostly'.
But i must add, we are in the end talking about lvg here. He's the 'problem'. Him and his possession football. So, just for comparison, we should look at what he wants us to be playing like and not what we actually are playing like. I know it sounds counterproductive but its the plan that matters firstly, then the execution.
So look at his previous teams, its never all possession and all slow. It involved counter attack as well as a lot of direct football. The issue is with all our injuries and players struggling to adapt, we haven't been able to do what he wants bar a few games in which we looked very pleasing to the eyes. I'm not saying he's been faultless, far from it. But to say that he 'ideally' wants us to be playing the way we have is wrong. We will play fast, we will counter attack and we will also keep possession. Atleast that's the plan. Now the execution, that depends on a lot of things. If not, there's always klopp.

This is a style Barcelona have had ingrained in them over many years, it was built up from Cryuff laying the foundations to LVG carrying on the work, followed by Rjikard and pep continuing the work.

It was not built over night, it took patience and persistence.

9.) 07 Jun 2015 12:36:57
Chris

They just have very good players that can play possession one touch football and also now a front 3 that can go from 2nd gear to 5th gear in a second and scary good.

They are a better team now that they were when we played them. Next year they will ben be better IMO. Might be watching a true dynasty here if already not there with 4 cl wins in 10 years. Pretty young team if you discount alves and some might argue quite few of their players have not even peaked yet.

10.) 07 Jun 2015 13:07:24
GCU Messi peaked a few years ago some folk would have you believe on here.

11.) 07 Jun 2015 15:40:05
Yes they look very good GCU.

I'm not so sure they will win it again next year tbh. It's a hard thing to do but if a team can it barca for sure at this moment in time.

JMB I can't remember anyone saying messi is over the hill (which I'm guessing your alluding too) some can argue he did peak a few years ago, just his peak is lasting a bloody long time lol.

12.) 07 Jun 2015 16:47:00
LOL He peaks every year.

13.) 07 Jun 2015 22:16:07
Jmb I didn't know Maradona played last nite.

I thought we played well today, don't really think we had a bad player. Mourinho bottled it in my view, when Chelsea came out second half so strong and only had a goal to show for it they sat off and let us back in the game. I'm pleased that happened because we fought back well and got a deserved point against the champions elect. Really pleased for Rvp hopefully he can build on this, Januzai was better when he changed wings, and Adm came more into the game then also. Not Adm best game for us but that's ok because other players stepped up Felliani and mata namely. The best thing is, in my opinion we put another youngster(James Wilson) into a huge game and acquitted himself really well against a very good back four. Plenty of positives to build on.

I'm looking forwards to tomorrow maybe another new face to add to our new squad in either Thorpe or McNair, just a thought but what would people rather see a young lad come in and prove himself (given time) or go and sign a proven international player? LVG Has said we are team in transition so the addition of youth players stepping up gives him a good problem in my opinion as competition for places can only be a good thing, although with injuries we have at the minute he is being forced to play youngsters. Isn't this the way we want our club to progress? We have the talent and "world class players" going forwards, why not build the foundations of our next team on our academy with a stream of talented young players making the grade. I think this would be wonderful and follow the "philosophy" of Manchester United. It would be amazing to think we could provide a team where the backbone was United to the core, with a few Stella signings to give us the sprinkle of stardust we desire. If the injuries we have force our hand in this way it could be a blessing in disguise!!

Busby

1.) Some good points. I don't think we have any youth players ready for first team football in the positions we need though. But given the plan has to be to secure a swift return to the CL and we've trimmed our squad somewhat (and may not have finished in that department), then there should be plenty of squad player slots up for grabs next season if all goes to plan.

Would you give 20 million for any of hart, Cahill, walker, rose, alli, dier, Wiltshire, vardy, or any of the other dross performers tonight? Or maybe it's all rooneys fault that England are out. Football is a team game last time I looked x.

Maybe, just maybe our manager has learnt from the start and mistakes we had last year, (inconsistent form/ endless injuries/ changes in formation and everything else he encountered in his first year in the EPL) . He has realised that if we are compact and well, a bit dull we can maybe go for it if come March we are in a position to challenge for honours. As the old saying goes it's a marathon not a sprint!

I think that be he first time I've actually agreed with beast! great result, from 1-11 (so to speak) everyone excellent. An up expected bonus, great 3 points against a very good team. So glad Rooney scored he played very wel, Martial is amazing. De Gea is key to our success.

Good to see another youngster given a chance, Jesse has been unlucky with injuries but it he must be highly regarded as he could have left during the summer either on loan or sold. LVG must see some potential for the future good luck to him.
