I know there has been a lot of criticism of Woodward and the Glazers about spending but keep in mind yesterday's signing of Rojo make it our most expensive transfer window ever. I know there has been other windows when money should have been spent and wasn't but there does seem to be a lot of knee jerk reaction. What does worry me is that we seem to be unable to attract the very top stars anymore, and I don't think it's necessarily just down to no champions league or not offering high wages, as it seems to be happening for a few years now. Kroos, Fabregas, Bale, Muller, Reus, etc. all turned down big money offers from United, yet Kroos and Fabregas deals seemed to be completed with ease with Real and Chelsea. Is it just solely down to Manchester not being as glamorous as Madrid and London to live in?

jomu83

1.) MU can attract the players if they coughed up the cash. MU are reluctant to pay what is needed and always penny pinch. I genuinely believe there is plenty of cash to spend this summer, but I think Ed Woodward may mess things up again trying to impress his employers, there is talk that he has ballsed up a couple targets already this summer. I keep saying that this summer is not the summer to penny pinch, if the club want to go back to doing that in the future then that's fine, but we need the right players signed this summer. Two CBs (one of which a warrior), two CM's (one of which a warrior), LB & pace upfront. So far 50% of the work is done. We need the other 50% concluded in just 12 days. Difference is the next 50% of players are far more expensive and harder to achieve.

2.) Reports today Sydney though that both Muller and Reus turned down massive offers from United, double your wages kind of offers!

3.) This isn't new news jomu83 mate. This was confirmed by the editor months ago. Mueller never wanted to leave BM, but was on a very low salary before our interest. He is enjoying a much larger salary due to our interest. Reus simply chose Barcelona ahead of us, but that deal failed to materialise. A month ago there was rumours that Reus was angry at Barcelona for his snub as he turned down a "dream move" to MU for them. I suspect he will move to BM next summer like they all do :)

4.) Syd,
i hope the groundwork is there for the deals of the mentioned names. Or else I don't think there is enough time to get 3 transfers done in 12 days.

5.) There is one thing attracting players, and there is another attracting players that love their clubs. Players like Reus and Muller love their clubs or have a particular club that they would love to join. You cannot blame a player for joining someone like Real Madrid - living in Spain, a star studded team, fantastic climate. Some people don't want to live in Manchester - that is part of the problem.

When a star wants to leave we haven't done too badly of late though - we got RVP and Mata who are world class players who could have gone elsewhere. It is always about money and if you are foreign you may not have allegiances to MU.

6.) 20 Aug 2014 11:52:18
Fresh ,

Whereabouts was the elsewhere that Mata could have gone to for 37M?

7.) 20 Aug 2014 11:54:01
Thing what things like this coming out does show is that Ed002 is generally spot on with the information he gives us and should not be hounded by people, just read what he / she says, it usually answers everything.

8.) Of course its money that talks man city have no problem in convincing top players to come to manchester

I may be wrong here but is anyone else seeing the fact that Fletcher was made vice-captain as an indication that we won't be signing Vidal. I would assume that being named vice means Fletcher will play when fit, presumably with Herrera, with Mata further up. I see us getting a central defender and Blind who can fill in in a few positions but I'm concerned that we won't get a top quality centre half, as it already seems like we have missed out on our two first choices (Hummels and Vermaelen). To be fair, if Arsenal looked for Smalling and Van Gaal didn't want to swap him, then we can't blame Woodward, nor can we in the case of Hummels really if Dortmund are refusing to sell. To be honest while like everyone else I'd like to see investment in the squad but I don't want to see us buying for the sake of buying. How far down the list of targets do the club go before they end up buying rubbish. Looks to me like Rojo is third choice at least. I'm not being a doom and gloom merchant here. In fact I have every faith in Van Gaal to bring back the glory days. Perhaps winning the league this year might be unrealistic but I don't have any doubt we'll be back in Champions League next year, and it will make it all the sweeter if it's at Liverpool's expense!

jomu83

1.) Van Gaal has a history of making his vice captains this type of player. hard workers, solid club men who everyone admires.
Don't read anything into it. fletcher will be an.important squad player next year nothing more or less

2.) Its just an indication Fletcher will play most cup games and rooney rvp wont

3.) He's a United man through and through. I heard his interview last night with and came across really well. Perfect Vice Captain and certainly made it clear he doesn't expect to be playing every week. He even said Rooney isn't guaranteed starts.

I liked how he came across and agree with LVG making him Vice Cap, even if he hardly plays he is good around the place and deserves the title.

I am hearing on here we have been linked with Benatia in the past few days. Correct me if I'm wrong but Benatia is Moroccan, does this mean that we'll lose him on international duty for the African Cup of Nations every 2 years? If that's the case, I think we should stay clear. I know Fergie wouldn't entertain the idea of signing a player who you lose for a month at a crunch time in the league. Perhaps someone could clarify the situation.

jomu83

1.) I'm not sure what you want clarified. As you say; he's Moroccan and will play in the ACON every two seasons. They're hosting the competition next year and so we'd definitely lose him for at least two weeks (they rarely get past the first round).

2.) Shouldn't be too much of a problem. Chelsea got by loosing Kalou, Drogba, Essien and Mikel every two seasons and still coped just fine

Interestingly Rob Dawson has claimed in a questions and answers session for the Manchester Evening News that Man Utd have no interest in Arturo Vidal and that United believe that all the supposed claims of interest are coming from Vidal and his agent. Will be gutted if this turns out to be true but the man does seem a bit more reputable than some of the other tabloid journalists. All of his answers seemed quite measured, sensible and credible. I know this is not what we wanted to hear.

jomu83

1.) He is wrong this time. Just few more days and we will see the truth

2.) All of the local journalists are being given no info this summer from the club. The club clearly want to avoid another disaster like last summer.

3.) More and more reports that lvg wants strootman before vidal or kross .
Really hope this isn't true

4.) If Journos aren't told anything then they have to try and guess otherwise they will have empty papers. I won't read into anything any paper says at the minute.

5.) Actually, this might be a question for some of the eds if they have the time. What journalists, if any, do you feel have, for want of a better word "inside insight" into United's transfer dealings?

6.) Jred, I agree, we need to bring Vidal in. Strootman would be okay, but Vidal is the best out there.

7.) 01 Aug 2014 16:38:16
The Vidal deal just makes sense for both parties. He's the best all round midfielder we could possibly buy at the moment and he's obviously looking for a pay rise that Juventus just can't afford (and maybe a new challenge in the PL).

I simply can't believe there's nothing in it.

8.) I have ONE issue with Strootman. I seriously doubt we can get him, until at least next summer and that'll be far too late. We will not make top 4 without a serious addition in midfield.

There has been a lot of kneejerk reaction to the news that Bayern Munich are interested in Thiago Alcantara. A lot of people are talking like Thiago has as good as signed for Munich. I'm presuming this is because a website have reported this today. I didn't see the reports on Sky but from what I've heard from others they were effectively reporting that Thiago was boarding a plane to go and sign on the dotted line. This seems to have created mass hysteria on the forum here. While Thiago could well end up at Bayern if his clause is met and he so desires, I think it's important to remember that anything that appears on a sky website these days can be taken with a massive pinch of salt. Let's remember Sky have a betting wing of their operation and in my opinion as long as exists, we're unlikely to see objective, truthful reporting of sports news stories. Today's reports in my eyes are no more or less reliable than what we've been hearing about United having almost closed a deal for the player for the past two weeks.

One thing further I might add is if we look at signings for United through the years, we have a history of signing players who only want to play for United. Take RVP and Berbatov as recent examples. City both offered deals to these players but neither even spoke to the club as they wanted to sign for United only. So if Thiago wants to play for United and United actually want to sign him, it will happen. If Bayern Munich come in at the 11th hour and he has his head turned, well then he is not the right player for the club. Players who want to play for United and only United make more loyal servants in the long run and better team players. That's why we may not have the best 11 players in the Premiership, but we can still win the league. That kind of loyalty pays dividends in the long run. I hope in a few weeks time we'll be celebrating the signing of Thiago. The fact that we're not hearing his agent whoring the player to all the clubs around Europe is a good sign, cause I think the majority of players who tout themselves around Europe are mercenaries anyway. I think we do need to keep calm though because I think there is a long way to run in this story yet.

jomu83

1.) Why would any of these top players born all over the world want to choose united or any other team for that matter? They go there because if the history, the current side and chances of winning trophies, the money on offer, and the location.
We all love united and we all love Manchester but players coming from Brazil Argentina Spain Portugal and so on, don't necessarily share our views on the club. So the only way to get them over here is to have a high profile ex player like Beckham talk to them and of course the offer of a fantastic package.

If you looked at Cleverley when he was at Wigan, he made a big impact. People were comparing Anderson to Ronaldinho before he joined United. I think you've proven my point for me. Different levels of expectation at different clubs.

They have an English translated website and there's no mention of it. As much as we'd all like it to be true, the eds have confirmed the meeting between Gill and Mendes was about Di Maria. Hate to be the pessimist but I just can't see Ronnie returning, especially now that Fergie isn't going to be around next season. I owe you a dozen pints if I'm wrong, which I'll gladly buy!

You have to be careful about taking players from Scotland. The league is vastly inferior to the Premiership. A typical example was Anthony Stokes. Came to Sunderland after scoring goals for fun in Scotland. He was worse than useless when he went to the prem. And that's not even someone going to one of the top teams. Another example is Samaras, absolute dung in the prem league but scored goals up there. Not saying Waynama isn't decent but how do we know? Big gamble. I'd prefer to see proven quality.

I think the reason he has been signed is the same reason as Di Maria and Rojo. He is effective in a number of positions which means that during a game utd can switch easily from 3-5-2 to 4-3-3 to suit the situation. Foe example if blind is one of 3 centre backs in 3-5-2 when formation is changed he can push on to midfield, di Maria push on to top left. Players like this will make us a very effective team, we just need a while to get to grips with the formation.

Not saying he must share have same opinions on everything or that I'm right all the time, I just wish "supporters" might actually support the team longer than 3 games into a managerial reign.

I think you've hit the nail on the head to be honest. With all respect, each person on here is entitled to their opinions, but your posts annoy the Barry White out of me. So negative, impatient and disrespectful to the players who play for United. I actually sometimes wonder if you are an opposing fan just trolling us all!

Jomu83

{Ed007's Note - Screw the nut, just because someone has a different opinion to you doesn't make them a troll or any less a Utd supporter.}

So beast, you think we should have one formation that we stick to at all times. What happens in a game where a particular formation doesn't work. The success of holland at the World Cup was down to their ability to adapt their formation to suit the game. You exemplify everything that's wrong with the modern fan. Wants instant success and three games in starts shouting the odds if it's not working out! Thought our fans weren't that fickle. How wrong I was
