I've seen a lot of posters on this site mentioning Gundongan as an ideal Summer signing. I'm just wondering how attainable he really is?

I've seen the latest Andy Green blog where he mentions that we can compete with the Barcalona's, the Bayerns, the PSG's et al, however, will Gundongan really move to Old Trafford instead of Madrid, Barcelona or another big European club.

I don't mean to be negative, and the player is exactly what is needed in our midfield but will he really come? {Ed002's Note - It looked like Gundogan would be sold this past summer and there was interest from Rubin Kazan and Manchester City. However, with Goetze going a season before expected, Dortmund were always going to look to keep the player and are looking to negotiate a new deal with him. It had been suggested that Manchester United might try and strike a deal for the player this summer that is not activated until next summer - that always seemed unlikely to me. Both Barcelona and Arsenal spoke with his agent but made no approach to Dortmund. Enquiries to his club have been made by Chelsea and Real Madrid.}

Hi Eds, with it being reported that Ever Banega is wanting to move in January I wondered whether he is a player that has been looked at by Manchester United and whether or not he would be the sort of player we need in the midfield.

I personally think he's add to the Midfield, and that he's a good player. {Ed002's Note - Southampton and Fiorentina placed bids for Banega over the summer but they were well below the asking price. Spurs also made enquiries. Napoli, Lazio, Roma and and Inter Milan have all been approached about the player in recent weeks.}

1.) Thanks Ed002

Is anyone else concerned that despite being outplayed by one of our biggest rivals, Moyes only decided to make one substitution? I'm not saying that the outcome would have been any different but at half time or in the second half it would have made sense to bring on Nani and Hernandez. Insted Moyes sole tactical decision was to introduce Cleverley.

The only pluses from the performance was 1 - surely now Young will be out of the door. When the team plays that badly it takes a special kind of player to stand out as being even worse. 2 - Rooney has his hunger for the game back. I know he's never going to be everyones favourite player after his past antics but yesterday he looked like the only player wanting to play for the shirt and cared about the result.

Adz

1.) What was worrying was he never brought on Cleverley at HT. I would have used Nani for Valencia at the end, but I think Moyes conceded the loss and was thinking about Liverpool and I expect to see Nani & Co play in that game.

2.) His lack of substitutions was the biggest worry of the day for me, yes. The result hurts, but these things happen, particularly in derbies. We had a bad day at the office and that's it. However, DM was too cautious. At 2-0 down, Fellaini and Young should have been replaced by Kagawa and Hernandez at HT. We had nothing to lose. Should have just gone for it in my opinion.

3.) I'll be honest mate. When I saw DM getting Cleverley ready to come on, at that point in the match, I started to have my first niggling doubts about the guy's capabilities.

And that's not meant as a swipe at young Tom. Just thought it was the wrong sub
At that particular time.
StevieK

4.) StevieK, but turned out to be the right sub at that time. Moyes should have made that change at HT. We needed an extra body in midfield. Nani should have replaced Valencia at some point.

5.) AJH

I actually posted at half time yesterday that he should bring cleverly and Kagawa on and gone to a 5 man midfield with rooney playing as a lone striker and subbed Welbeck and Young.

The fact that he waited for us to get truly humped before he shored up the midfield is worrying as it was plain old obvious we could not retain any possession and were getting over run and our defense was all over the place.

6.) Syd, it was a sub to steady the ship and protect what we had (or didn't have!).

There was no ambition in it whatsoever. At least when they humped us 6-1, we gave it a rattle, even with 10 men.

I'd rather go down fighting, with a bit if style and swagger, than meekly go to meet the inevitable.

StevieK

7.) StevieK, we played FAR better with that extra midfielder and it was all MU from then onwards. City was comfortable at 4.0, but they still tried to score more goals. That extra man meant Valencia could stay forward. I'd much rather it'd been Nani though, I agree.

8.) Sydney! StevieK. I agree with you both. We did play better with Cleverly on instead of young although I would imagine given his abject performance even Lindergaard would have seen us improve.

My main concern is that Moyes didn't seem to want to bring on players who might influence the game in a positive way. Kompany was immense but I think playing Welbeck suited his game. Hernandez with his movement and in box play would have caused far more problems. I'd have liked to see Young, Welbeck and Valencia replaced at HT with Kagawa, Nani and Hernandez and have a proper go at the City defence.

9.) He was trying to get cleverly on before the goals went in, he was warming up and then the 4th went in as he was about to come on.

He should have pulled Young & Smalling at half time, pushed Valencia to right bank and he did the right thing bringing on Clevs. He calmed us down with the ball and we actually started to create. Fellaini pushing further forward was the main reason we looked better, he gave them physicality to think about and we could work in the space and pick up the pieces.

The players we have were signed for a reason, unfortunately half of them have not lived up to their potential and should have been shown the door, but Moyes gave them a second chance, fair enough. It will be wholesale changes next summer and the general deficiencies being shown has been coming for ages, teams don't fear us anymore.

We've been turning up to war with a cannon and all our enemies are buying nuclear warheads!

The team has been poor for years, but we have just managed to scrape wins where we will now draw or lose the same game this season.

Just wondering if any of the Eds or regular posters here know of any interest in Blaise Matuidi of PSG? Only has a year left on his contract and from what I saw of him in Ligue 1 and the Champions League last season would certainly improve the midfield.

I think for the £40-45 million Everton are wanting for Baines and Fellani we could more than likely sign Matuidi, Kondogbia and Contraeo - that would be a good summer window in my eyes

Adz

Adz

1.) Matuidi is miles better than Fellaini and Kongogbia but can't see PSG selling him at all.

Shahram

2.) Kondogbia looks a great player. Another player, Pedro Obiang also looks a talented player. Plays a similar role to Kondogbia. I think Shappy posted about him on here. Your thoughts Shappy?

Just seen the news that Liverpool are selling Jonjo Shelvely to Swansea.

Is this the same Jonjo that the scousers were coming onto this page saying was going to be world class, miles better than Cleverly, the next Gerrard etc?

He's so good he can't even make it in a mid table club like Liverpool! LMAO

Adz

1.) Nice to see a young English player making a step up in their career :)

2.) Yes Adz but he maybe good; that's why he has gone to a better club.

3.) To b fair he's signing for a bigger club

Big Mac

4.) Funny part is he won't even make it at Swansea

5.) To be fair, it's a step up for him.

6.) I've a deluded mate who said he could be as good as Zidane!

7.) Big Mac, to be fair I think Swansea will not finish too far away from Liverpool next season. If they can get Bony and retain Michu and Williams they will do very well. Shelvey will do better as he will not be under so much pressure and Pozuelo is a very good player.

Sydney!

8.) He has gone to Swansea to increase his chances of European football.

9.) Maybe Shelvey thought of joining a club who has more chance to win something!

Fixtures are out.

Chelsea, Liverpool and City in the opening 5 matches.

Baptism of fire for Moyes or what!

If we can get a motivated Sneijder keen to prove he can still cut it at one of Europes elite clubs then great, he'd be a shrewd signing and I think he'd be good as part of a midfield 3.

Don't know a great deal about Everton Ribero but you had me at replace Young!

I wouldn't be overly suprised.

Sneijder could still be a very effective player for us particularly in an area we are weak. Moyes will have his own views on players and although we didn't sign Sneijder under Sir Alex, Moyes may have interest.

Seems too expensive including both Valencia and Nani though

Hi Sydney! I get that Moyes wants to be his own man and make his own decisions but it seems like he is refusing any of the clubs previously planned out targets out of stubborness. Regardless of whether they would have been good for the club or not. Thiago, Strootman and Garay would certainly have added to the first team but haven't been signed when we had realistically good chances to sign them.

I hope that he has some good signings lined up but am not filled with confidence at the moment.

On a seperate note I've noticed Lewandowski commenting about how nothing is signed with Bayern and that he'd like to play in the Premier League. Is he still nailed on for joining Bayern?

I don't think Young is on £100K a week, I think it is closer to £60/70K.

I think Moyes is ready to give Januzaj a chance. He's saying the right things about the lad and we've seen him take part in 2 of the 5 matches played this season if you include the community shield.

I suppose the rest is now up to Januzaj to grab the opportunity and make it so that Moyes cannot leave him out of the side!

Marcellus, As you so frequently haunt the Manchester United pages (strange I know given you're a Chelsea fan?) you will no doubt have seen that over the past 12-18 months Rooney has been the subject of much debate. Many people on here do not think he will ever be the player he was, others feel that with better fitness and his current form he can reach those levels once agains. Rooney is a top player. World class - debatable, depends on your definition I suppose.

Torres however, has been on a downward spiral ever since his move to Chelsea. Injuries haven't helped him but to compare him and Rooney is ridiculous. Rooney still manages to positvely effect games creating and scoring goals something Torres has failed to do with any level of consistency.

As for our current position, fortunately titles aren't given out for your position come Christmas. Points wise we are closer to the top of the league than we were a few weeks ago. With what appears to be greater consistency, other teams currently above us playing each other and throwing in the odd shock result i.e. the Everton result this weekend then moving into the top 4 is quite doable over the next few matches.

The season is long, and the league is much closer than we've seen in many a year with at present 5 teams looking capable of mounting a challenge. It will be interesting come May. Until then Marcellus, you keep thinking we are worse than we are and theat Chelsea are better than they are. We'll see in May who is correct

I think the academy is in good shape, and the emergance of Januzaj this season will certainly give encouragement to the younger players that they can make it.

Given the step up from youth and reserve football I think most of the youngsters will go on loan to championship clubs or lower premiership clubs to gain experience in the same way Powell and Lindgaard are out on loan at the moment. I think when they return to Old Trafford we will have a clearer indication of Moyes plans for the youth. There are a number of youngsters who could potentially make it into the first team especially given the number of players likely to leave in the next 2-3 transfer windows.

I think the draw was good to us, although to be honest I'd have backed us against the majority of the teams we could have ended up drawing.

Agree to an extent - I'd have us as favourites of the English sides to go into the next round, with Chelsea and City 50/50. Arsenal for me are out.

In the next round however, there will be no easy draw and the onus will very much be on Moyes' tactics and the players to deliver if we are to get any further.

I agree although I don't think that it's just that the CB's aren't comfortable on the ball.

Both Vidic and Rio are lacking in pace, and whether or not is is a tactical decison by the managment or by the players themselves they are reluctant to puch forward for fear of leaving too much space for pacey attackers to exploit.

This is further compounded in that neither Carrick nor Fellani are the most mobile of players. They too seem fearful of leaving too much space especially when they have to compensate for Evra's forward play. The result is when the team breaks down the oppositions attack the CB's and CM's are so deep that we have almost 10 outfield players to try and beat in order to create goal scoring chances.

Most of the really good attacking teams press much higher up the pitch meaning they can attack the opposition goal much quicker when the ball is won. Bayern did this amazingly well last year in destroying Barcelona.

That for me is the key reason behind the lack of quality attacking play in our team not just this year but in the previous 1/2 seasons also.

I agree with needing the midfielders to have shots from range though. Even if it's just to win corners, or hope that the save falls kindly for one of our players. I remember Rooney, Ronaldo and Tevez peppering the goal with shots from everywhere - that's before Nani, Scholes and the others.

Danny - Good Post!

I too don't beleive that Moyes is the man for the job. Not because of trophys won, European experience but simply down to brand of football. The Manchester United way is to attack, to play with flair and creativity - something we lack. I get that we don't necessarily have world class players in all the right positions but those that we do have don't get played in the correct positions or to their strengths.

IMO we will see but I would have liked to see a younger more progressive manager at the helm of our club. If we are to lose matches I'd rather lose scoring and playing well than keeping it tight and dull.
