Have seen that Shaw has broken his ribs, but haven't seen any report of how long he is out for.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Would be a huge miss for the start of the season.

Accprodng to reports, he has played with broken ribs for a few games.

If you have ever broken, fractured, bruised your ribs, you won't be able to round a football pitch unless you are on some very strong pain relief.

Having cracked/ fractured my ribs before, I can tell you that it was very painful and hard to breathe at times.

2.) 21 Jul 2021 13:09:04
Mad Hatter, "played with broken ribs for a few games" - where did you hear that one?

Forget about playing games you can't even move around freely.

3.) 21 Jul 2021 13:28:16
The report states he broke his ribs in the Germany game at the Euro's. He then played against the Ukraine, Denmark and Italy in the final.

If true I'd imagine with a ridiculous amount of pain killers.

That said I also saw a video of him having a good time on holiday with Mount and Rice so I'm slightly skeptical about the report.

Bruised ribs seems more likely.

{Ed014's Note - he has plenty of padding to protect them so probably just bruised.

Did you see the two huge bowls of grub Shaw had in front of him?

4.) 21 Jul 2021 14:04:48
That makes sense Shappy.

5.) 21 Jul 2021 14:43:01
LPU,

It was a report I saw which made me laugh. I bust my ribs playing football. I think the media are trying to make him into some sort of hero etc.

6.) 21 Jul 2021 15:15:05
Mad Hatter, it's laughable indeed. Feel some of these media people can become great story writers for fiction.

7.) 21 Jul 2021 19:26:30
Broken ribs in the media? No, Barbecue spare ribs, it was an auto correct error.

8.) 21 Jul 2021 20:18:13
Ok didn't realise it was that much playing time. Obviously exagerated for the click bait. As others have said there's no way he could have played that much with a fracture. i have broken 2 ribs previously and it is the worst pain i have ever had, and I've broken my knee and neck.

Still i would expect he could be out for the start of the season.

9.) 21 Jul 2021 20:35:55
Anyone who thinks that a broken rib is the worst pain has obviously never got their "old chap" caught in their zipper 😬.

10.) 22 Jul 2021 06:25:36
Shappy, you have just exposed Phil Jones secret of staying injured 😊.

11.) 22 Jul 2021 06:55:26
Shappy

Wait until you experience gout, then decide.

12.) 22 Jul 2021 08:40:21
Red Man,

A few decades yet for Shappy to experience that.

I try and keep my dad well away from my zipper.

We are all hurting after that loss. The performance was lacking and the choices made by players and manager were not good enough, that should be clear to everyone.

I have always felt that Ole has continually built on his small successes, and has seen improvements from most of the players in and around the team.

With last night and a number of performances this season I feel now would be a good time to part ways. The squad is in a better position than when he joined, the balance is better, and I feel we can all see a couple of signings could elevate us to another level of consistency. I just don't trust Ole to be the man to do it.

He appears to be a good coach, the team always looks well drilled and generally well organised. It is the nuances between zones that we lack, the tactical nous to change things when we aren't performing well, and the ability to highlight weaknesses in our own team during a game.

Last nights substitutions, or lack of, showcase this really well for me. The 11 were not performing well and need a change of shape/ personal to help us. Yet the first decision was to take off Mason, probably our best attacking threat of the game, for a holding mid who is known for a lack of creativity. I feel it really should have been Pogba to make way, i felt he was constantly hiding from the responsibility that playing in the central position needs.

This change led to our whole demeaner on the pitch changing. Our threat from wide was nullified and we started to make sloppy decisions in our half which led to Villareal growing into the final stages of the game. Once it went to pens i felt we had lost the game.

This is my reasoning as to why Ole can't be trusted to take the team further, i may be wrong and if he stays i hope he proves me wrong. However there are a number of well respected, tactically exciting young managers who could be available this summer.

I don't feel an entire backroom clearout, ala Moyes, is neccessary. But a new manager could be so much more beneficial to us than an expensive signing.

Glory Glory.

Found an interesting stat on the BBC website: 31% of our home losses in the premier league era have occurred since SAF left.

Just shows how great he was as a manager. Forget the money we could spend or the lack of competitiveness compared to now. For a manager to lose less than 2 home games on average every season for 20 years is astounding.

What a manager he was, what he achieved at utd is applaudable to say the least, incredible really. He will always be known as a legend that's for sure.

2.) 28 Aug 2018 05:23:19
As we are finding out now he was irreplaceable. Who is fit to step into his shoes, probably only Guardiola or Allegri in the current climate and neither are available. So we must stick with Jose and hope he and the players can turn it around.

I shall start by saying I don't see it happening ever, but the rumours of alcantara are interesting. He is a great player and in my opinion there is only Mata in our squad who is as intelligent a player, although Mata needs to be 10m to 15m further forward to be effective.

It would also mean our options in cm would be Matic, Herrera, Fred, Pogba, Fellaini, Alcantara and McTomminay. With the different types of player in the mix it looks like a midfield 3 is the club's goal.

Now to my main point, are the rumours of a 'tempo cm like alcantara and kroos out there as a subtle sign of how we are to play If we get the right player? Could we see ourselves moving over to a cm similar to that which Juve used with Pirlo, Vidal, and Pogba?

With the right player in cm I could see this happening. It would also be a set up to suit Jose's counter attacking style. We would 100% need to improve our defence, as also seen in media reports, but our attack would not need major surgery unless people leave, in my opinion.

Lots of negative posts as normal for this time of year, but once again I'm feeling positive about where we are going and the moves the club is making.

I like the idea of that kind of center mid coming in. If Thiago leaves Bayern, he will probably go back to Barcelona. A player that can run a game, pass and move with ease wold make a huge difference. And right now we don't have one.

There was a post, and sorry for not crediting it, about second 11 strengths and it got me thinking about how good ours actually is. A team of romero lindelof smalling rojo Shaw herrera Carrick mata fellaini young ibra is about as good as any side outside the top six could wish for. Yes players could be upgraded but as it's our second string i think we can be extremely happy. I don't for a second think that team would be consistently good enough to compete for the league but if a side such as Southampton had it then they would be tipped to compete for a European place. The fact yhat many of those players were in our first 11 just 18 months ago really makes me happy about the direction our side is heading.

1.) 07 Sep 2017 10:18:18
100% Agree dude.

We have a very strong squad and if we were to suffer any major injuries we have a strong back up in nearly every position. Add a LB and another Winger and we'd be tipped to win the league next season I'd imagine.

2.) 07 Sep 2017 12:00:15
Yes we have a good squad but we lack a winger and we lack a top top creative midfielder / game changer. Can't see us winning the title at home or abroad if we don't address those issues.

{Ed004's Note - I disagree slightly. If we upgrade our fullback positions it'll reduce the need for a winger. However, we are still short another goal scorer in the side}

3.) 07 Sep 2017 12:40:34
Ed, Griezmann and say Rose between now and next season and our first 11 is best in the league I recks.

{Ed004's Note - I don't rate Rose that highly and also think a right back would be needed. We might as well buy the best if we are only going for 2 signings though. So if we need to improve on Shaw I'd be looking at Sandro or Alaba. Also we don't know how Mensah will perform on loan. He was very good against France the other week}

4.) 07 Sep 2017 13:59:35
Hendon I agree another winger would be great for the squad bit creative mid, surely we have enough in mhki mata Pogba and andreas. Even fellaini is doing his bit at the moment and we could see ibra in that role from the bench and mctominay could be the future there. Fullbacks is a position we all know could be improved but if Shaw darmian tfm or mitchell step up again we are sorted. We have great options and prospects in pretty much every position at the moment which is why it's so exciting for us United fans right now.

5.) 07 Sep 2017 13:33:22
Rose was just an example Ed, but yer Alaba would be the dream. I like where we are with our squad though, only a few changes needed to really boost us and hopefully be successful these next few years.

{Ed004's Note - 2 maybe 3 signings and I would give us a chance against anyone in the world}

6.) 08 Sep 2017 00:04:42
Ed who would be your ideal and realistic 2-3 signings? Mine would be Griezmann, Alderweireld, and one of Alaba (not realistic) or Guerreiro.

{Ed004's Note - I don't think we need a cb unless Lindelof doesn't step up, Jones gets injured or Rojo doesn't return to his best although it's hard to turn down Alderweireld at under 30 million. Mine would be a right back (no idea who - I really wanted either Semedo or Aurier), a lb (if Shaw doesn't hit form) and I'd look at Sandro and Alaba and lastly Griezmann}

7.) 08 Sep 2017 02:06:45
Hasnt Alaba already rejected Man Utd once before? Or am i remebering wrong?

8.) 08 Sep 2017 09:39:55
I thin so stoupid hence the bracketed comment. He would be my ideal defensive option though can play lb, cb and cm and is one if the world's best in each position. Guerreiro of dortmond is my much more realistic option and can play lb lm and cm very well. I'm not entirely sold on our need for a rb at the moment, toni and darmian are solid consistent options and the likes of tfm could be perfect in that role after his loan. Alderweireld is possibly the most consistent cb in the world and I can't see why we wouldn't out our name in the hat if his contract issues aren't resolved.

Sydney!

Isn't it frustrating. I remember a few years ago we were talking about signing the Chilean contingent of Vidal, Sanchez, and Isla. I also believe the fees at the time were being quoted as around 30-35m for all 3. Now we would be lucky to get 2/3 of those for that price each with Isla being the odd one out but still a 10-15m player.

Anyway a window of Vidal/Gundogan and a more creative player would be great IMO.

I have been an advocate for Henderson as our no1, and I still think there are parts of ddg game that doesn't suit how we tend to now play. However, ddg has been great this season, multiple games he has kept us in a position to win the game. His form right now is brilliant and long may it continue.

I can see where you're coming from, he has a lot of a Carrick type in his play and his positional awareness on the pitch has always been a good aspect of his game, hence why he can play as 8, 10 and at rm.

However his physical presence has never developed since he first came to us. He is lean for a cm in the prem and very lean for a sole DM. He also doesn't seem to use his body very well without the ball. As an attacker he is good at getting his body between the ball and the challenge to win free kicks, but defensively I can't remember him being good at shielding the ball or out muscling another player with the ball in the air.

If he had been coached to fill the DM role back when he first joined then maybe he could play the role for us today, but I feel he was always seem as an am and coached accordingly.

As such I would rather the club look outside to fill the role rather than shoehorn in a current squad member.
