Watching Maguire again last night he's just shocking, has to go.

{Ed014's Note - don’t be mean!?

Maguire is not a bad defender but he’s just not suitable to the way we now want to play under EtH!

Maguire is perhaps more effective in a back 3 where he’s not left isolated. He’s better in a team that want to defend deep and counter attack where he has lots of bodies around him and he doesn’t have to read the game or get dragged out of position.

There is no point in asking Maguire to play a high line or leaving him exposed in 1v1 situations. He simply doesn’t have the pace or mobility and he doesn’t read the game well enough to make important tackles or interceptions so he doesn’t leave himself exposed and running back towards his own goal.

I think EtH recognises this and has preferred Lindelof whilst Varane has been out injured who is a touch quicker, more mobile and reads the game better although I don’t think there is that much better them. Neither are good enough if we are committed in implementing a high defensive line, pressing game.

To be honest neither are suited to the style EtH ultimately wants to implement and in an ideal world both would be sold and more suitable replacements found.

Like I said in another post I think EtH has shown he has the quality to build a side capable of playing exciting, modern football but there are definitely several players in the squad who are just not suitable for this style.

EtH can only be successful if the Club back him and he is allowed to sell the players that can’t play this style of football and replace them with those that can.

If the Club won’t take the financial hit on players like Maguire and AWB for example then EtH will struggle to fully implement his style and play the kind of football we all want to see.

{Ed077's Note - "Maguire is not a bad defender" Sorry but you lost me there already.

He seems to be 4th choice now behind Martinez, Varane and even Lindelof.

I think for that reason he will look to leave next summer. Which is probably best for all concerned.

If you have to play in a 5 man defence to cover your weaknesses and defend so deep you're holding hands with your own goalkeeper, you're not a good defender.

He should leave in January along with CR37.

So basically Shappy what you are trying to say in not so many words is that Maguire is a bad defender.

He plays like he's wearing Dr Martens and turns slower than milk.

Dlib maguire is a bad defender. He can't run his positioning is awful and compounded by the fact he can't run.

Ken - Of course maybe I should have worded my post a bit better. Just to clarify he’s a solid enough premier league defender. He could do a job for a team in the Premier League that deploy a back 3 and are happy to sit deep, get bodies back behind the ball then counter attack.

In my opinion he’s no where near good enough for a team that has aspirations of winning the major trophies especially if they want to play a high defensive line. He’s certainly not suited to the style of football EtH wants to play. Maybe I should just stop digging!

I think we’re all on the same page when it comes to Maguire. Have a good weekend pal.

Criminal that we paid £85 million for him and £190,000 a week

I’ve seen oil tankers turn quicker

We will have a massive problem trying to offload him.

DLIB, Maguire is an average defender at absolute best. There are too many things that a defender needs to do well in the modern game that Maguire does badly for him to considered even a decent defender.

First and foremost it is his absolute nonexistent reading of the game. He is football illiterate. He doesn't scan, he has no idea where other players are, where they may go or what is even happening in the moment. He is entirely reactive, never proactive.

That is why he is always out of position.

He has good physical strength, and is tall, but is slow and immobile.

That lack of pace and mobility is exasperated by his poor reading and positioning. As he is unable to mitigate his lack of mobility by being in the right place at the right time, and his poor pace means he lacks the ability to quickly recover from being in the wrong position.

He is good in the air in that on the occasions that he is in the right place at the right time to out jump/ muscle the opposition (although his poor positioning again means he is often caught under the ball) . However, I'd say that although he wins the header more often than not, I don't think he is particularly good at clearing the ball with his head. He often heads the ball either straight up or back into the danger zone. Rarely does he get it clear or find a teammate with a headed clearance.

I think you hit the nail on the head, at the EPL level (especially at the top end) he can fine as part of a back three system that plays counter attacking football meaning he is rarely isolated 1v1 and there are plenty of other players to cover for his poor positioning.

Of the top 6 teams the only one I think he could be alright in is Spurs under Conte with his 3412 system that plays on the counter.

Although he probably isn't the worst player in terms of ability that he have ever signed. In terms of viewing the transfer as a whole he probably has to go down as the worst signing we have ever made. His performances, his lack of suitability to play for a top side, his cost in terms of transfer fees and wages as well as the compounding factor of him being made captain just leaves me scratching my head and wracking my brains for a worse signing. Certainly none spring to mind.

He's utter dross. the end. The fact United paid £80m for him. makes me cry. and let a far better defender leave ? god Woodward did some damage to United.

Red,

He is atrocious, he is the human equivalent of a sloth. He lacks the intelligence to play as a CB, which further rubs salt into the wounds.

Furthermore stating that he needs to play in a back 3, only reinforces my point above.

The World Cup will be interesting this year, as he man handles every opponent he comes up against.

DLIB, read your first 2 paragraphs and then tell me how he’s not a bad defender.

You too Dlib.

Got Newcastle written all over him. Not many ‘lesser’ clubs with the dosh to offer and afford his wages.

12 Nov 2022 00:43:19
DLIB, did you subcontract out that post to Shappy? Could have sworn blind Shappy was writing that ?

McGuire's mentally shot now. Not surprising with his fall from grace.

Sure eth will find a solution. Not playing him has been working quite well. Selling and replacing him will be phase 2.

If it was twitter, DLIB your account would be suspended for impersonating Shappy.

Pretty sure most of you thought he was going to be our Van Dijk at one point. Terrible signing, terrible defender and stealing an absolute living. We were absolutely robbed, we paid 70 million too much.

{Ed014's Note - let’s be honest, everyone you sign or comes through your academy is pretty much hailed as the next big thing etc!

Of all the pages on here yours is the only one that constantly does that.

I was at the game the other night. Didn’t think Maguire did much wrong of note - any worse than any of the others in the back 4.
I find it all too easy to make Maguire a scapegoat and while we’re all entitled to an opinion some of the comments about the lad here are a disgrace.
He’s got a phone and obviously reads what people think and are saying, the pressure on himself must be huge every time he steps out on the pitch. - he’s our club captain let’s get behind him.

To add to your post Blackpool Red…

He was signed on a 6 year contract with an option of an extra year!

21.) 12 Nov 2022
12 Nov 2022 19:24:15
Maguire is our worst signing of all time. Arguments can be made for others but I think Maguire pips them all. He's nowhere near good enough. The fact he is going to the World Cup ahead of someone like Tomori is hilarious.

22.) 13 Nov 2022
13 Nov 2022 05:46:07
Sad thing is Maguire thinks he is doing great.
One of the signing which set us back 3 years.
Ole's master stroke ?.

23.) 13 Nov 2022
13 Nov 2022 11:35:14
If Maguire was half the player on the pitch that he is in his head he'd easily be world class.

His overly large head is to store his ego which leaves little to no space left for his brain.

That explains the stupid drivel he comes out with along with his total in ability to learn from his mistakes or learn to read a game of football.

24.) 13 Nov 2022
13 Nov 2022 13:30:06
What's to blame for all your stupid drivel shappy?

fair enough Ed077 - maybe I should consider my words more carefully. I meant he’s not that bad compared to me, it’s all about perspective. Having said that I think I could probably turn quicker and run faster! Have a good weekend pal.
