Next deal to go through will be Vermaelen, expected to be completed by the end of the week.

JESSOP1982

1.) Hope not. I would like Hummels or Subotic.

2.) Hummels is unlikely, I wouldn't be surprised to see us go for him next year to replace someone like Evans if they don't perform. Vermaelen though is a born leader, very tidy on the ball and is an LVG type player. Rocket of a left foot as well.

3.) Vermaelan will arrive but carvalho will be next.

4.) I think going for Vermalen means we are hoping to promote one of Smalling or Jones to the first team. I don't believe the directors would be showing the type of ambition they are at present, only to begin signing players that fail to improve the squad. If we sign vermalen, I think he will be an addition to the squad rather than the first team.

If this report is true, I would expect us to sign one top class centre back this window, rather than 2, as many probably thought we might have to. I would also expect that centre back to partner either Smalling or Jones. We have already seen Smalling, stating he wants to prove himself as a regular choice this season for club and country. Perhaps he has held talks behind the scenes and been informed he will get that chance.

Vermalen as back up means u have a decent squad player, aswell as someone with experience to step in, if either jones or smalling fail to step up.

5.) I'd love to have Carvalho!

6.) If you look at the back line as it would currently be, we have Rafael, Jones, Smalling, Shaw. If we picked those 4 they are all under 25 and not that great experience. Vermaelen will play alongside either Smalling or Jones I think, probably Smalling in all likelihood.

7.) Just my opinion but I don't see vermaelen joining unless he is guaranteed first team football, that's the only reason he's leaving arsenal after all!
I'd also be inclined to play him with either Evans or jones and not smalling.
For me. smallings gone backwards.

8.) Vermaelen is better than what we've got left but not much better. i'd like another fast ball playing centre back like Rio 1st and let Phil Jones try and fill Vidic' boots and be the warrior at the back. I know he's still got a lot to prove but I think he's got the passion to donit

9.) Agree with Smudger_s smallings game has definitely gone backwards, he just looks so short of confidence, would rather jones be 1st choice!

anyone else think that going in for Ashley Cole would be a good shout?

Free, EPL proven and IMO still world class

JESSOP1982

{Ed002's Note - Hardly "free".}

1.) Still world class indeed but we need to be looking to the future in my opinion.

2.) No, it's time to build the next era which means looking to young future world class players.

3.) 26 Jun 2014 16:01:26
Herrera reported to have passed medical and agreed personal terms

4.) 26 Jun 2014 16:18:47
Maybe not a bad short term shout, rather than paying 34m for a 19yr old who has had 1 half decent season. Think shaw is a good player, but the figure being quoted for a left back is more than a goal scorer in Diego Costa. Ridiculous

5.) You mean wages ed?

{Ed002's Note - And a multi-million £ signing on fee.}

6.) At the end of the day, we'll need to buy one lb and if we end up buying Shaw, it'll only get more costly. it's now or never.

07 Jun 2013 13:41:41
brilliant signing, just what we need, a young south american rb, oh wait.

im only joking b4 anyone jumps at me

Ronaldo is coming back btw

JESSOP1982

1.) Love your optimism, but how are you so sure that Ronaldo is coming back?

2.) Tbh it's nothing more than a gut feeling, a case of weighing the for and against.

a) he plays for the second best side in a 2 sided league.
b) he comes home

not that simple obviously but we know the reason he left which was a very honest and reasonable one and I just think he may feel he has taken his career at that club as far as he can.

3.) He will sign for who ever pays him the most its his nature

4.) He loves utd, besides he wouldn't hold us to ransom, we can't afford wages in which he desires? fair enough? doesn't mean the loves not there!

28 May 2013 11:36:01
a lot of talk on here about Thiago to utd, question is, as I haven't seen very much of him, is he utd quality? get the feeling that barca don't want him more than we actually do want him.

JESSOP1982

1.) He would be a snip at £18 million if the rumours are true.

2.) He would be a great player in a three man midfield but a liability in a two man midfield. He is highly rated by the fans at Barcelona but he has the tendancy to try and attack and make things happen too much so Vilanova prefers players who will pass pass pass and pass again rather than be abit more forward thinking.

But if Barca wanna sell a very talented young player for a reasonable price then we should at least entertain the idea.

3.) Massive improvement on "Andesron" as he has been called for a large chunk of his games this season.

Nat

4.) Sssh! Monaco might scupper the deal.
Dylan

5.) It's even cheaper than that apparently, apparently it's €18mil so around £15.4 mil

6.) Yes he's quality. Only had to watch him during the United vs Barca game in last season's pre season! Scored a cracker against De Gea too.

Ozwald

7.) Top drawer, no question, would be an excellent signing.

8.) Slight difference between Iniesta and Xavi and Cleverley and Anderson! So yes, he is united quality!

Mikey D

9.) Barcelona did not want to really get rid of him. They have some great midfielders, Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, Fabregas and they don't really play with much rotation. This means that Thiago will not get enough playing time. Thiago wants to be in the Spain squad for the 2014 World Cup and the only way he will have a chance is if he starts regularly, so he wants to leave Barcelona and go to a team where he will play on a weekly basis. He is a very talented player and many Barca fans want him to replace Xavi.

Farley

10.) When your midfield consists of Anderson, Cleverley and Carrick - Then yes, yes you do want him.

11.) Already a very good player and potentially a fantastic one, I agree with the lst reply at £18m a very good price
Invisible STuey

12.) Good news all round then, sounds like a quality player, am I right in thinking that Yaya Toure was surplus to requirements when he moved?
same kind of player or different beast all together?

13.) I really like him, I think he could be a scholes type player
Jred

14.) Jessop completely different player, reminds me a bit on Deco when he was on top form at Porto.

15.) Caolan_2 if that be the case then we should defo focus on him and bring in strootman as well

Strootman---Carrick

Zaha---------Thiago-------Kagawa

-------------Van Persie------------

16.) Whats with this wanting to play Kagawa on the left wing? I see it time and time again on these pages and I never understand the desire to put square pegs in round holes.

Kagawa needs a decent run in the team playing as a No 10. Otherwise what's the point of buying him? If we needed a left winger then we should have bought a left winger.

We have Rooney as a no 10 as well, plus RVP who can play there, so unless Thiago can operate in a two man midfield I don't see the point in buying him.

Andrew B

17.) Thiago -- Carrick -- Strootman
-----------Kagawa--------------
------- RVP --- Rooney --------

With Kagawa following the ball and supporting the full backs out wide.

Ste.

18.) Agree with Andrew B this fascination folk have with Kagawa as a left winger makes no sense. I would play him as second striker in 4411, in the hole in a 4312 or central element of 4231. His talents are wasted out on the wings. We need to play thru Kagawa.

QUICK QUESTION FOR EDS:

IF LEWANDOWSKI WAS TO MOVE TO BAYERN WOULD WE POSSIBLY SEE A MOVE FOR MARIO GOMES BY ANY CLUB AS HE MAY THEN BE SURPLUS? {Ed001's Note - I expect Gomez to leave anyway, he is one of a number of players that have been made available.}

JESSOP1982

1.) WOULD ANY OF THAT INTEREST BE FROM UTD?
ALSO WOULD ONE OF THE OTHERS BE ROBBEN AND A POSSIBLE REUNION WITH MOURINHO AND CHELSEA? {Ed001's Note - not that I am aware of, and yes Robben is one of the others, though I would be very surprised if he went back to Chelsea.}

2.) I don't think he would anything to us anyway

anyone think it might be worth taking a chance on Micah Richards? (as backup of course)

JESSOP1982

1.) I wouldn't want him anywhere near our club always injured and seems more intrest in joking around than his career it's a shame as he had a lot of potential

2.) The last part of your comment Michael is why I thought he migh be worth a punt, could van gaal be the one to get something out of him?

30 Jun 2014 15:58:41
any ideas on the futures of both Powell and Zaha?
Do we think they'll be given a crack any time soon?

JESSOP1982

1.) Both should be on the preseason tour for LvG to take a look at.

2.) Perhaps we should give actual crack - you'd get some tricky wing play from Zaha then.

3.) AJH, it will be difficult to get hold of now Rio has left :)

4.) Will be interesting to see if Zaha gets a chance. SAF saw something, Moyes didn't - what will LVG think.

5.) 30 Jun 2014 18:46:30
IMO zaha is potentially a player that could well flourish under LVG. will he listen? can he be coached? Apparently depay has similar issues and LVG manages him well, I think he has a 50/50 chance and as with most of the players it will be up to him.

6.) 30 Jun 2014 17:46:54
Rooney has more than enuff crack,

Oh I see wot u mean now ;-)

7.) I really don't rate Zaha, looked completely out of his depth in a poor Cardiff side in which he wasn't even first choice. Has pace and some skill but his decision making, work rate, passing, movement and final ball are all well below the standard required. I know he's a young lad, but the murmurings from the United camp last season were that he thinks he's made it already so he couldn't be arsed to apply himself in training.

8.) Danny, let's wait and see how LvG gets on with him in preseason. It seems everything Moyes touched turned to sh!t. Zaha is a cocky lad, players like that need to be loved and last season he wasn't. Then moving to Cardiff must have been a major blow to him when Young is getting picked ahead of him. If he isn't strong enough mentally then LvG will figure that one out in a heartbeat. Depay is also a pain in the arse, but LvG seems to get the best out of him. IMO he should be given a chance before he's sold.

9.) I think this season we will start off with a strong u21 squad and lvg will work on them to get them playing how he wants. Those who perform will be given a good chance around the first team, but if they don't buckle down then they will shipped on.

I think Powell could make it. Zaha just seems another example of his own hype. England debut far too young to stop him playing for the Ivory Coast and then a big move have gone to his head.

10.) The thing is he was given lots of love by Ole at Cardiff and he still let him down time and time again until he was dropped. In my opinion, Zaha was bought on the cheap because Fergie lost out on Hazard and Lucas. Zaha looked decent in the championship because he wasn't required to do any defensive work and got to play against weaker defenders. When he had to step up in the EPL and raise his game, he just wasn't good enough, and he got completely found out at Cardiff.

11.) I agree with danny, zaha doesn't look ready for united. Lots of rumours about attitude problems as well

12.) Id send him on loan again to another prem side and if he does'nt prove himself there then he don't deserve another chance at United

13.) Hey just think arjen robben 1st season he did not set the world alight at Chelsea nor did bale or Ronaldo let give the kid a chance before writing off zaha I used robben as a cocky player in reference too a quote earlier I think if SAF was there last season we would seen the better side to him

14.) In my opinion it may be crunch time for zaha now as if lvg gets him performing to his potential he will be a great player but if he doesn't buckle down then he will be out of the door. For me there are comparisons to a young Ronaldo as in he has the tricks and pace to ghost past opponents but doesn't try things at the right time. As stated his delivery at times is poor too (just like a young Ronaldo or present day nani) and this needs work on. Essentially it all boils down to if he has the drive to better himself like Ronnie did or if he wishes to just toss it off and potentially never have the career he could have. That said he hasn't had long at the club and hope he shows enough in training to get a opportunity to show if he has got what it takes.

15.) 01 Jul 2014 08:13:11
Clearly has skill and talent, maybe needs a stern manager to put him in his place, was Moyes the man to do that? Not really haha.

It'd be nice if he got his head down under LVG seeing as we've already spent £10m on him.

various sites reporting that Shaw has just completed his medical.

JESSOP1982

27 Jun 2014 09:54:25
with Herrera signing and almost done deal for Shaw where would everyone like to go next?

personally I still think we need a tank in the middle and a cb.
if we ended the window with Herrera, Shaw, Vidal and Hummels I would be ecstatic!

JESSOP1982

1.) Vidal bid and then CB which might be hummels next and finally a left winger if we can move one or 2 wingers on.

2.) 27 Jun 2014 11:48:04
Vidal vermaelen sanchez

3.) 27 Jun 2014 12:01:50
Them four would be Ideal, but I still think we will need a new winger. Any of Greizmann/ Robben/ Sanchez/ Reus or something along them lines and we are right back in it. Fingers crossed, but nonetheless, great start

3 different twitter accounts reporting United interest in Xavi today.
Whilst I know any tom dick or harry can open a twitter account and say whatever they want it does raise a question.

Is he needed? Is he past it? Would he be the same player without Iniesta beside him?

Banter please eds

JESSOP1982

{Ed004's Note - It is not going to happen. He is past it and isn't needed especially if Herrera is signed}

1.) Xavi for one season wouldn't be completely out of the question IMO. No one plays a number six role much better. It could be a stop-gap until Strootman is fit.

2.) Xavi as a 6, Herrera as an 8 and Mata as a 10 isn't too shabby.

3.) 25 Jun 2014 15:58:18
Whos's the defensive midfielder in that trio?

4.) Xavi's legs are gone, plus he's signed a pre contract to join a middle east team. Also where is the defensive cover coming from?

5.) Hes 34, he's passed his best for sure but if he come to man utd even just for a season or 2 he would be a revelation, he can still take the pi ss on a football field and make people chase shadows just for the fun of it, alongside herrera and a player like carvallho i'm jizzing almost thinking about it.

6.) Stretfordender,

No doubt on the ball Xavi is still as classy as they come but without someone sitting to protect the back four we would be over run. We have a lot of 10's and I can't see us playing a system without one as you have suggested. I should imagine the No. 6 type will be great on the ball but be able to offer something in defence too (Maybe a Kroos type player). The lad Jordy Clasie although not as good as Kroos from an attacking point has the passing range and accuracy for the role whilst offering a lot more defensively.
