Wild game today, with 5 excellent goals, great to see Lukaku come through with the winner. The lads showed a lot of character today. Ole and the staff deserve huge credit for the giving the players confidence and second chances as well.

Think of Pereira. He cost us dearly a few weeks ago, and today Ole gives him a chance, and what a hit he comes up with. However his future goes, he will have that great memory of his first goal, and you could see it meant the world to him today.

McTominay as well has come in and put in a few solid performances. Nothing dynamic, but he has done his job and battled for 90 minutes.

And what a day for Romelu Lukaku. I admit to being frustrated with him quite often, but he has kept working, and has really come up big with two well taken goals today. And the last few all with the right foot. Thanks to Lukaku, we have pounced on our opportunity today, and go into PSG with confidence and and in a good position for the Arsenal match next Sunday.

Even if we don't go through on Wednesday it's all about the performance to go into the game against arsenal.

Just have a go and give it everything we have
3 points off 3rd place was a dream not so long ago.

Ole at the wheeeeeeeeeeellllll.

I really love the part about the manager not throwing the players under the bus.
Lukaku struggled, he kept saying he's a better play.
Andreas struggled, he kept saying he's doing very well in training.
Fred was said to be not good enough and he came and got an assist in the last few minutes.

Ole is getting so much out of the players and the squad bar Sanchez.

Thought the result today was well fought. Southampton only had three shots on target one straight at DDG from 30 yards and the other two worldies into the top corners. That happens sometimes as annoying as that is.

From our perspective Pogba had a bad game, summed up by his poor penalty at the end. Rashford was off the pace, however i would say that I don't think he is 100% fit. Sanchez continued to have another poor game. Sadly I don't see it working out for him with us. Andreas Pereira had a very poor first half, but improved when he was pushed further forward in the second half with a goal and an assist. However, I struggle to see him having a long term future. Young had a strinker, his throwing that lead to Southampton's first goal was terrible. Then he gave away the free kick for their equaliser. I was surprised he stayed on for the full 90 minutes, every time we made a sub I expected Young's number to be called. I thought he was a liability.

However, again we showed fantastic fighting spirit with a depleted squad, Andreas and Lukaku stepped up when we needed it. McTominay was solid if unspectacular as was Lindelof and Shaw. I worried it might be one of those games early on when we created chances but couldn't get the ball over the line.

Glad we got the points, 3rd isn't beyond us this season with a little luck. Which would be phenomenal. Onwards and upwards.

Pereira plays better when moved further forward. Shock, horror!

02 Mar 2019 18:54:18
The right hand side of our defence is a massive problem for us. Smalling is good in 1v1 physical battles but he is only a squad player in terms of ability and seems desperate to give away penalties for pulling shirts. As for Young, he isn't a full back so it's not all his fault but he is a liability defensively. His use of the ball is also poor. The amount of times in the last 4 or 5 games where he plays a pass too short, passes to the opposition or just knocks it aimlessly up the line/ out of play is astounding. Dalot is still young and in his few appearances for us has shown he is better going forward than he is defensively but he surely has to start ahead of Young going forward?

However, there is plenty to be positive about which is great. Lukaku has found some confidence, Shaw and Lindelof are in good form and players who are coming into the team are making a difference when we have a lot of injury problems. Dalot, Pereira and McTominay showed that today.

4 new players in the summer, RB, CB, CM and RW and I think we will be in a very good position to contend or perhaps even win the big competitions again.

Smalling is poor on corners marking and one v one duels where the player is running for the ball or worh it

Why does he constantly pull their shirt when var comes into effect next season if he is playing we will get punished more than not.

Didnt think pogba had that bad a game, sacrificed himself for the team by dropping back into the holding midfield role and improved our build up from the back.

This allowed pereira to move forward and effect the game much better.

Agree4 Disagree1

02 Mar 2019 19:50:19
Lbad, Pereira might be a decent squad player, he could be good played as a No.10 when Pogba doesn't play as Pereira isn't good enough defensively and Pogba is lax at best in his defensive duties. Against a better side today our midfield would have been torn apart. As it was against PSG.

I feel we need a solid experienced RB but there are few out there and fewer available, in an ideal world I'd love us to sign Meunier. But that just isn't likely to happen.

Rj, I would have a RW far down the list of priorities, Dalot, Lingard, Rashford, Chong and Gomes can all play there well enough. And a few of them are young enough to step up and make that position their own.

Agree5 Disagree3

02 Mar 2019 20:16:08
When I say RW, I'm meaning another player who can play from the right but is similar to Rashford / Martial who can play right across the front. This would give us plenty of attacking options.

As for RB, I think we need someone in their peak years to give Dalot time to adapt and gradually take over from them. Vrsaljko perhaps? Not sure how viable an option he is but I'm sure he is on loan at Inter so maybe a deal can be done?

We won and yet you still find negatives to criticise a player. If you expect the team to play like peak barca, iniesta, Scholes and xavi then you are deluding yourself. We had injuries to key players and yet the other players are putting in good performances with win. You can't always win with fine margin all the time. Sometimes this are the kind of performances that gets teams over the line in winning championships. Kudos to the players. If you watch the game you would realise pogba was playing deeper and doing quite defensive work and also in build up play. If you going to judge him every game on his assist and goals then you should channel same energy to other midfielders in the Modric, kroos, Dr Bryune of this world. Pogba had a good game. Not perfect but he did the job for the team. Appreciate the team winning and stop finding negatives

Andh.

I think right back and centre back are the highest priority along with 1-2 midfielders. i'd like another winger but as shappy says its not essential compared to the others. i'd also look at another striker. Martial for the moment is better wide. We only have rashford and lukaku.

Pereira has had a few games and he’s been written off as a starter. Give the lad a little time, he’s stuck with the team when his chances were limited and proved himself with an assist and a brilliant goal, what’s to say he won’t continue to improve? I’m delighted for the lad, he embodies what’s good about our youth development and only helps other prospects to try hard and not give up.

Agree2 Disagree0

02 Mar 2019 22:56:51
Andy, it's not a case of looking for negatives. In fact I would say on balance I tend to be one of the more positive posters. At least I always try and find the positives.

I'm just trying to give a balanced view without the rose tinted glasses on. I enjoyed the game, and I appreciated the fight and offensive vigour of the side. But we did make mistakes at home against a side who are battling relegation. Which meant we could have lost points in a game we shouldn't. Injuries have to be taken into account but it just highlights the lack of squad depth.

Penfold, Pereira is nearly 23. He had a so-so couple of years on loan in La Liga and he hasn't hit the heights with us yet. He was near hopeless bin the first half albeit he tried hard. In the second half Ole moved his position and he playeduch better. But this was hardly against the top level opposition. I really want him to succeed as I do with all the academy lads. But there comes a point where you have to say he isn't going to make it as a regular. The only thing he excels at is dead ball delivery/ long shots. His passing isn't incisive enough, he lasks pace and physicality, and he doesn't produce enough in the final third.

If he wants to stay next season and fight for a place then I hope he makes it. But my gut says he will want regular football and my brain says he is unlikely to get that here. So at some point he is likely to leave.

Agree4 Disagree3

03 Mar 2019 08:52:56
Pereira is a talented lad, will be a good player in the right system. Not played much this season and people are allready on his back .
Average first half good second .

Look at lukaku, bit of a ruff run of form and people wanted rid .
Rash is the opposite, good run of form and he suddenly has to start every game . Just wait until his form starts to drop ( which it will) 1 or 2 average games people will want him gone .
Infact it was only a few week ago people were saying he wasnt good enough, didn't really have the potential .

Agree2 Disagree3

03 Mar 2019 09:55:02
Jred, I'm not doubting Pereira's talent, just his ability to turn it into consistent high quality performances.

Nani was probably one of the most talented players we had during his time at the club. Yet for all that talent he so often drifted in and out of games. Often contributing very little in 4 out of every 5 games.

Pereira's best position is probably at No.10 as he hasn't got the pace to play out wide or the physical attributes or defensive awareness to play deeper. Yet we have Pogba, Mata and Lingard who are ahead of him in that role.

He has been pushed around in many different positions because he lacks something in every position to truly make it his own.

I hope he proves me wrong, in fact nothing would make me happier. I just don't see it.

There are three likely scenario's,
1, He leaves in the summer when his contact is up.
2, He signs an extension, hardly plays next season and leaves in the summer of 2020.
3, He signs an extension and makes a position his own and becomes a first team regular.

From everything I've seen of him I feel options 1 and 2 are most likely. However, I do hope option 3 is what we get.

Anyone think Dalot can do a bale and start off as a rb but become a rw? And no I’m not saying he’s going to be as good as bale but he has all the attributes to be a very good winger. Quick, skilful and can cross. He made an instant impact today. I would play him there until Jesse is back. Sanchez unfortunately is finished. Would much rather see pace and youthfulness on the wings.

Dalot has a lot of ability on the ball, some trickery, and good crossing. Simply put, he is confident with the ball at his feet. Time will tell if he can develop defensively as a fullback. At the moment he is already an excellent wingback. Not sure he has the pace to be a winger, but for now, he is doing a great job while the squad deals with injuries.

Ole and the players are exceeding mine and many others expectation.
I honestly believe with 4 very good signings we can compete with the best in the epl.

Some craking goals today.
Everybody knows our defence is shakey at times but we are scoring goals and three spirit and effort is there in abundance.
Ole has shown himself to be tactically astute too.

Bot all players will have good games all the time.

Pogba and Rashford had poor games, and then it's the job of others to step up and they really did.

Young is not a RB, stop complaining about it, he was never a good winger for us. He's just a squad player.

Smalling is the only CB who can remain fit, and he starts over Bailly simply because he can head the ball better. needs replacing.

Lindelof and Shaw had their usual good games.

Pereira given the freedom second half, scored a goal and got an assist. I was screaming when he didn't pass the ball to Shaw on the left, but he believed in himself and scored a wonderful goal. Amazing. It's hard to be a United player especially when you're new or young, would be nice if supporters gave him time and backed off him.

Lukaku, 2 class finishes. He was paid a lot of money for this and he scored 2. Flat track bully against the lower teams, but who cares?

Dalot and Fred played good part in the game, even though I wouldn't have brought them on, credit where it's due.

We have a really hard run in till the end of the season and I expect us to be touch and go for top 4.
Wolves, Arsenal, Chelsea and City still to be played.

I normally do not comment on money and such as I agree with Ed002, it confuses people me included.

Saying that, if reports are true that Brendon Rodgers is getting £200 to spend, surely United should be able to spend similar? As Ports said below, that is realistically what we will need to spend to address our needs, not to mention prices go up when it's United who are calling.

I just hope we spend wisely and on need. there are some solid players in the Prem who could come cheaper than those on TV ads (Nieves from Wolves strikes me as one) .

Believable0 Unbelievable0

02 Mar 2019 14:00:26
I don't see neves as a cheap option at all. Wolves owners have invested heavily into the club and are in no need to sell the player. The deal would be very costly for club.

Agree1 Disagree0

02 Mar 2019 14:38:01
Neves is reportably a £100m option if that is considered cheap these days. He's a top player. No doubt another club will get him for a lot less than that. But Man Utd always have there pants pulled down on purchases prices.

Stats are great, but the last few weeks have shown our squad needs investment, now the worrying thing might be the owners think we are okay squad wise with a few players from the youth set up and don't invest in the squad.
Youth progression is great but we must get rid of some players, all mentioned here already, and purchase about 3 first team players. Just hope our owners are not satisfied with top four each year because our recent issues on the pitch has not impacted on revenue taken in which is their primary goal.

The prize money won't dry up if we keep getting into the top four. However, sponsors will only pay top money on sponsorship of teams that are winning titles and cups. So at some point the team will need to win these if the Glazers want to maximise income from sponsorship.

Agree3 Disagree0

02 Mar 2019 10:22:07
I agree we need new signings but they need to be quality additions as opposed to quantity that we gone for previously.

Having players come up from the youth will only help this as it will free up resources to bring in the best players.

Just think back over the years of some of the poor signings still in our squad and the youth players that could have been used instead.

1.) Sanchez, would greenwood or chong perform any worse than him in a squad role?

2.) Fred - it is nye on impossible angel gomes would have been worse than he has been.

3.) Rojo and jones - axel tuanzebe could have easily filled in as 4th choice centre half.

4.) Valencia and Darmian - Fosu Mensah surely would have been a more capable back up than those two this season.

Thats 6 players who are taking up unnecessary space on our wage bill that ed002 pointed out is causing us issues.

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed004's Note - I agree. I would rather 3 top class players and promote youth players who are ready Tuanzebe, McTominay and Greenwood. Rather than signing 6 decent players. Although, Fred still has a chance. Everyone wrote Lindelof very quickly, myself included, and hes been phenomenal since Juventus game}

02 Mar 2019 11:47:12
I don't care if the player is on a free or costs 50m i don't care if he is 23 or 28 as long as he he the right player.
We have some good youth prospects and also a couple of players like mctom tuanzebe who can fill a squad place straight away and make a better contribution than fellaini or rojo for example.
4 is the right no for me. 2xcm a right sided attacker and a cb.

Good morning guys,

I just wanted to touch on our midfield options and a perceived lack of strength in depth which I'm not sure is as bad as we all believe.

It's gone largely unnoticed but Mctominay's contribution over the last couple of games has been very encouraging. For some reason he's not that highly regarded by many of our fans but I think he's a decent squad player. He perhaps lacks quality on the ball at times but that's not really his role. Having said that against Palace he made several great forward passes in-between the lines for Pogba and Lukaku. As a defensive midfielder he's positionally astute and well disciplined. He's physical, relatively mobile, decent in the air and good at recycling the ball. It remains to be seen if he possesses enough quality on the ball to make an impact against sides where we enjoy significantly more possession but with Pogba in the side his creativity isn't as important and it's great credit to him that we haven't really missed Matic. Darren Fletcher and Nicky Butt both became valued and important members of the squad and I think Mctominay can fulfil a similar role.

I've read a lot of posters criticise Fred recently but I believe he can replicate the energy and mobility of Herrera. I know he lacks bite and physicality at the moment but he's not the first player to struggle with the pace and physicality of the EPL. There were signs in the second half against Palace that he could become a useful player. He has a tendency to dwell on the ball and he can be easily shrugged aside but with a touch more sharpness, awareness, confidence, tenacity and determination I think he could become an effective player. I'd like him to get a run of games whilst Herrera is out.

Pogba for me is our only midfielder that is irreplaceable especially under Solskjear. His power, creativity and his ability to drive us forward from midfield has been fundamental to our resurgence in recent weeks. I know we had a debate last week around his future but if the Club were to give Solskjear the job then they must also keep Pogba beyond this summer. He's vital to how Solskjear wants to play and I just don't see us being anywhere near as effective without him. If he were to be sold I think we'd have to look at bringing in a No 10 and revert to a 4-2-3-1 type formation. At the moment Pogba is scoring goals and providing assists and has mucked in defensively as well. He's certainly better defensively than an Isco or a Ozil for example whilst producing more going forward as well. I don't think we understand just how good Pogba is. I'd hate him to leave and think we'd really struggle to replace him.

As for the summer I agree with DSG we've got some exciting youngsters coming through. I personally don't think we need that much. I think a really outstanding right winger, centre back and possibly a RB would make us real contenders assuming we keep Pogba. We possibly need some cover at LB and maybe another midfielder. Quality over quantity every time.
